Re: Freeware Alternative Software List

Hi

This is a very useful thread.
I've looked through it and haven't seen a specific recommendation for an audio and video file converter.

So I'm suggesting WinFF.

It's based on a program called ffmpeg, a fast converter used with Linux which converts (almost) anything to anything.

WinFF is ffmpeg with a GUI. There's versions for Windows (95-Vista) and also Linux.
The program has several 'pre-sets' for commonly used jobs. You can tweak them or create new ones if you like.

It's a free download from Bigg Matt's website. Here:-http://biggmatt.com/

Re: Freeware Alternative Software List

This is a good summary site :
http://www.techsupportalert.com/best..._utilities.htm

Check out Comodo for security software especially a highly rated firewall. Note that I've only just put v3 on one XP box and it seems to slow network that I did not see in v2.

I like The GIMP for image editing and Irfanview for viewing. Both can handle RAW images from my camera.

Open Office for not paying more money to Uncle Bill to edit docs and so on. I do find somethings here a pain though.

Generally though I like to go the whole hog and use Linux then even the OS is free. Hardware support is much better as is user experience than used to be the case. I like OpenSUSE but also have used Kubuntu (I prefer KDE to Gnome) and Gentoo. I've dropped the latter for the moment.

Or, if you use Mac OSX and want a version with a user interface that is better integrated into OSX (the standard OpenOffice uses X11 which works, but isn't well integrated), use neo office (http://www.neooffice.org ).

Is this one of those boxes where you connect it to the cable connection and the box unscrambles all the channels for free?

Simple: You rent another box from Virgin.

Using a box you have bought on Virgin's network is against Terms and Conditions. As such, we will *not* allow discussion of how to obtain services this way.

If you want a cataloguing app for Linux that'll handle books, DVDs, CDs & more then have a look at Tellico.

Currently using it to catalogue my music collection. Point it at a music folder & it will automatically import id3 tag data (recursively), point it at a CD & it will download details from a CDDB source. It can also import or link to cover images, print reports etc...

A brilliant program, plus the author is approachable for help or suggestions for features :)

Crap Cleaner or Ccleaner is an excellent free registry cleaning tool, that also clears out crap and temporary files etc...

www.ccleaner.com/

Also, Pirisoft Defraggler, although in Beta stages this defragmenting tool is excellent, it has the option to defragment files individually (i.e. the fragmented files only) or the whole drive, (which speeds everything up).
Also removes fraggles... I think... (if they even exist...)

Comodo not on the list, but ZoneAlarm is! April Fools was last month.
ZoneAlarm is bloatware, avoid it.
Also, Sygate used to be the dogs, until Norton bought it and abandoned it (instead of replacing their garbage offering with it). I don't know how well it would perform today, given some of the things i've seen malware do.

Apart from that, here are a few more good anti-spyware progs

Bit miffed seeing as I took up the $100 offer earlier in the year.:(

I thought I saw a tS icon on your desktop pic in an earlier post. I'm just glad that I signed up for proTeam when I did, as my subscription would have been up for renewal round about now. If they hadn't made 7.6 free I would still have probably got it anyway as part of the proTeam deal, & I've got most of the courses already, & would have been entitled to grab the rest before the subscription ran out, so in 1 sense I haven't got anything extra as a result of them giving 7.6 away free. On the other hand, proTeam seems to have been [for now at least] rendered pointless & non-existant, so I don't have to fork out £226 [approximately - it's usually $449 to renew, which is about £226 at current exchange rate].

Cue Splitter
Quote:

CUE Splitter is a freeware tool that split a single big audio track, mostly an album or a compilation, into the relative individual audio tracks, using informations contained in the associated "CUE". Sometimes you can find a big compressed audio file (for example MP3, APE, FLAC, OGG, WAV, WMA, etc...) equipped with a small "CUE" text file that contain informations about tracks title, artist and length. Usually these couple of files are generated by programs like EAC (Exact Audio Copy), CDRWin, BPM Studio, GoldWave or similar. With CUE Splitter you can split audio track files without burning to CDR or decode/re-encode any audio data! Moreover audio files are automatically named using a user-defined "file mask" string, it's tags are filled with information extracted from "CUE" file and, optionally, an M3U playlist file can be generated (option enabled by default).

Enterprise level software that you can download and use for free.
Suitable for developing powerful browser based data applications on Windows or Linux.
The nuBuilder Enterprise software has recently been released under the GPL3 licence.

Re: Freeware Alternative Software List

It's not on the list so does anyone know a partition program which gives you a list of OS' and you select how big you want the partition to be and then it downloads the OS you pick which is usually a Linux OS. And when you want to remove it you just remove it like you'd remove any program? I used it a few years ago but I've forgot it's name.

Yeah I checked that out but I am not too sure about relying on a site so I probably should have asked for an offline solution.

Thank you for the suggestion though Kymmy :)
