Totally agree, Mr Love Monkey.

I don't think much of Koontz' recent books, but some of his earlier ones were great IMO.

As well as Whispers, Servants of Twilight, & the excellent Lightning, I'd recommend...
  • Watchers
  • Strangers
  • Midnight
  • Phantoms
  • Twilight Eyes

and a few of his other early ones from the late 80s / early to mid 90s

To be honest I'd probably find it easier to list the ones that I didn't like :) , since he has written so many books - he went through a stage when he just churned them out and 90% of the time, if not more, you got a good read

I'm reading 'One Door away from Heaven' by him at the moment - I'm only a 100 pages into it and so far it seems ok - I'm hoping it's a return to form from him, but I won't hold my breath.

False memory is the one that involves haiku isn't it?

I would really recommend reading his older books, I really enjoyed them.

Edit: lightning was another really good one, if you could get past the improbable story line.

one door away from heaven is a wee bit weird but i enjoyed it...
and from the corner of his eye.... i enjoyed that one too
will read some of his older ones..... i think he's a good write, he describes things brilliantly

TCoTC is a very nice concept, and a good antidote to a lot of "heroic fantasy" and sub-Tolkienesque rubbish, but the whole series could have done with a *damn* good editor.

It is, regrettably, somewhat overblown, to the extent that the second trilogy of books has one entire volume (The One Tree) which, frankly, could have been removed completely without affecting the story.

Having said that, if you can get past that lot, it is a good series.

I agree - It took me a lot of persistance to get into the first book, but once I did, I was hooked...

Some of my recent ones

Behindlings by Nicola Barker. Good book, very hard to get into, but worth it

Round Ireland with a fridge by Tony Hawks Very Funny book

Stargazy Pie by Laura Lockington. Its alright i suppose. Its a little bit girly, and to be honest a bit stupid at times, but it made me laugh at some points
:)

Just finished the Lord Of the rings trilogy, and its pretty good (no surprises there), but i much prefered the hobbit ending in th ebook as opposed to the hobbit ending of the film.

Why the heck did they do that?

Anyhoo, just started The Curious Incident Of the Dog at Night time, and first inidcations (im about an 1/8th of the way in) are that its really good, and very funny too.

Recommended.

Another book that could have done with a good editor was "imajica".......took me ages to trawl through that....still good though.

Im reading Wilbur Smith "River God" now......a bit of easy pulp reading for a few days :)

Hmm, according to Russ and Jerrek, the last book I read was supposed to be great, (Left Behind: A Novel of Earths last days), a complete waste of money, one of the only books boring enough to put me to sleep, unfortunately I bought it along with the second book in the series which looks to be twice as long. I feel a donation to Oxfam coming on.

:Yikes: I'm not surprised you didn't like them. They're Christian pulp fiction. I've read most of the series, but I've only stuck with it because I'm interested in the subject of the end of the world (and, more specifically, the Christian 'take' on it). Quality English literature it aint. The characterisation is wooden and the plotline (by which I mean the story of the characters involved, not the overall Biblical narrative) swings erratically from the predictable to the outrageously improbable.

I read that Peter Jackson & Christopher Lee had some sort of disagreement, because Peter Jackson cut all the Saruman scenes from RotK [presumably simply because they would have made the film too long for the cinema...even without the Saruman scenes it was well over 3 hours].

They are apparently going to be reinstated for the Extended Edition DVD :)

Latest book I'm reading (well, re-reading) - The Eagle Has Landed, by Jack Higgins

Thats good news BUT i doubt the ending will change though as the ending at the shire is completely different. I suppose it *could* come before the ending of the current film, but i doubt it.

The instruction manual for my new Canon A80 Powershot.:) Very sad I know, but I have always been a sucker for manuals, and strangely encylclopaedia type books.

Presumably including how to say it - I've just spat all over my screen :)

I'm still reading though a crate of pulp Sci-Fi - too many to mention, but very enjoyable - oh, I used to love my 'How it Works' ;)

So, name a few names then. Sounds like they could date back to the days when I read SF more regularly.

Harry Harrison - Lifeboat

Frank O'Rourke - Instant Gold

Clifford Simak - The Night of The Puudly

I've read the Blish and, I think, the Harrison (may I put in a plug for The Technicolored Time Machine , one of the funniest SF books ever and may I also say that everyone has to earn a living but The Stainless Steel Rat should have been drowned after about book number 3 and Bill the Galactic Hero cast adrift in outer space after the first).

Instant Gold rings a bell, but that's all, and I'm not sure if I've read that particular Simak; a one well-known book author, City, I'd say.

Indeed,
Ramrod there are quite a few books in the Rainbow 6 series by Tom Clancy, and there all pretty damn good, but if you like that sort of thing get your hands on one of Toms other books, Red Storm Rising, its the best one of Clancy's books i have read and well worth a read.

I can't remember if I've read 'The Technicolored Time Machine' - I'll look out for it, thanks Theo. :tu:

- I heartily agree about TSSR & Bill :(

'Instant Gold' was sold as SciFi, because it supposes the concept of a can, to which you add water - and get 'instant' gold - making a profit, thereby. The last is the key, as it sends the worlds money markets into turmoil, when people find out the product actually works. It is really a critique of free enterprise capitalism, but very funny :)

- and although I have said I dislike 'series', I thought Larry Nivens 'Ringworld' & Frederik Pohl's 'Heechee' series, were very good.

Eh? Rainbow Six is not a series, although there are several other books that feature John Clark and Ding Chavez.

Are you sure you're not mixing them up with "Op Centre" or "Net Force"? (Both of which series, frankly, I recommend people steer clear of because Tom Clancy's name on the cover is just a franchised brand!)

I like Clancy - the insight into American military & intelligence rings true, I recently enjoyed 'The Bear & The Dragon' & 'The Cardinal of The Kremlin'.:)

Ah, Clancy books :)

I've got all of the "Jack Ryan" books (Hunt for Red October, Cardinal of the Kremin, Executive Orders, etc etc) plus Rainbow Six (which, although it doesn't really feature Ryan, is still set in the same "world").

Very good, IMO

Yeah, it is Net Force i was thinking off, which is also partly written by Clancy i belive (or at least edited by), i found those to be pretty good as well, in fact i really liked the rainbow 6 stories, even thow the name sounds a but ghey for an SAS squad these days. :D

The Rainbow 6 hehehe...
