For the love of.......

OSX is probably a little faster for graphics editing I think, but that is mainly due to hardware. Linux is a LOT more customizable than Windows, if you care for that. Windows, for example, can't readily forward ports. With Linux, you can just use xinetd.

I've never noticed any slow-down with Photoshop 8. Linux, customisable? No doubt about that, but who on earth wants to configure an operating system from the command line? Not sure what you mean about forwarding ports, I do that with my router, which admittedly probably has a linux kernal but few people use a windows machine as a router, unless they use ISA .. and that's a piece of p*ss to configure.

Re: Realplayer 10 released

I thought this thread was about RealPlayer 10 so excuse me for butting in and asking a question about it.

I have been having a problem for a while with Windows Media Player not being able to stream radio. I have tried everything under the sun that I can think of, uninstalling it and trying every version available but no luck. It always gets to the point where it is "connecting to media" and then just sits there.

Seeing that RealPlayer 10 is supposed to be able to play Windows Media files I installed this and it works perfectly for radio streams in Realplayer format but does the same as WMP for Windows Media streams, just sits there with "connecting to media" until it times out. I have uninstalled Zone alarm but this does not help.

The computer is running Windows98SE as is my daughters system, both running behind the same router, the difference being my daughters system does stream Windows Media radio OK. Anyone got any suggestions that do not involve wiping the drive and starting afresh.

There you go. Then, if the EU prohibits Microsoft from shipping Media Player with Windows, they are prohibiting Microsft from improving their product. So my original statement stands. You're advocating competition, yet you're preventing a company from improving its product. Yet you're not doing it to other companies, such as Apple with QuickTime.

Quote:

The reason I keep using phrases like 'short-sighted' and 'narrow-minded' is because whether it's a 'better' product in the here and now is only one concern. In the long term, allowing Microsoft to dominate to the extent that there is no competition leaves one single organisation providing all services without any effective challenge from anywhere. Doesn't sound that different than communism to me.
So, unless the government helps out, Apple and Linux will disappear off the market? Are they so bad that they need special rules and regulations to make it?

I for one don't think so.

Quote:

I don't claim ownership of them except in the way I am entitled, as a voter in a democratic society, to have a say in how things are done here. You have the same privilege - if you dislike the anti-trust laws that blight Microsoft in the States in a not dissimilar way to our European Competition Commission, it's your right to go and vote for someone pledged to repeal them. Is there any mainstream opposition to the current antu-trust laws in the USA?
So, if the majority votes that everyone worth more than $100,000 should give all their wealth to the government for redistribution then it is justified because it is what the majority decides?

You cannot vote someone's rights away. Your excuse to the blatant infringement on Microsoft's rights is basically "because the majority says so."

That is not an acceptable reason. That is a weak excuse for an anti-competitive action taken by people that have no rights, but still deam they should have, over another individual or company.

Quote:

Apple has got away with things that would have put Microsoft in the dock a dozen times over. On the one hand it's deeply hypocritical, but having said that, Apple doesn't have the same power to destroy an industry simply by deciding to do things in a certain way.
Microsoft doesn't have the power to destroy anything. Everyone can just pick Linux or Apple, or write their own operating system. Nothing is preventing it!

You're hypocritical in the fact that you want to restrict Microsoft from improving its products, but Apple should have free reign. That is just not cool.

Quote:

Linux is an operating system kernel, normally suurounded by GNU tools, even though the GNU project has long been developing a kernel of its own. Then you can choose from a range of GUIs to sit on top of it all. So anyone who uses Linux has already enjoyed far more free choice than they would be permitted by Microsoft.
I still want to buy RedHat with NTFS. My choice of file systems is restricted and infringed on because I'm FORCED by a company to use a file system I don't want.

Let us get real. That is stupid. YET, that is exactly what you're doing to Microsoft.

Quote:

However this is a bogus comparison because 1/ Linux is essentially free, and it is open source, and therefore incapable of monopolizing the market even if it were the dominant operating system; and 2/ like Apple, it isn't in a monopoly position.
There is no monopoly position in the operating system market.
Second, if Microsoft manages to maintain 90% of the market by charging $250 for an operating system when people can get a free one (Linux), their product must be substantially better. Remember how people moaned and complained about IE being free and Netscape not? Well, if Netscape was so much better, people would have kept paying for it. But they didn't, because Microsoft gave it away for free, and it was better. That forced Netscape to do the same. Free enterprise 101.

That said, it is not a bogus comparison. I want to buy Redhat Linux with NTFS, and they are forcing me to use ext3. They should be barred from such anti-competitive practices!

Exactly... People are not interested in that crap. The same thing that makes Linux great for nerds and geeks is what makes it crap for the consumer, who just so happens to be 99% of the market.

Also, not sure why people are moaning about having WMP installed with Windows, I and probably millions of others would much rather have it installed than have to download something to watch video files, play music etc, what if they have no internet connection? Thank you towny, this is basically what I have been trying to put across. My right to, as Jerrek puts it, 'tell' MS or any other company how I believe they should behave comes from my being an individual in a world of individuals that interact through their beliefs and opinions. Anybody elses opinions are equally as valid and is through consensus (such as the democratic process) that the actual way forward is found. It may as well be asked what right does an atom have to influence the paths of the atoms around it.

Plus there is the choice of ntfs in the kernel :)

It is supposedly anti-competitive because it forces competition to improve their products.

Do you think that Real would have a ****ty base as it is if their software wasn't the utter crap it is? Microsoft is pushing hard for them to improve it, and they don't like it.

Well I must be one of the majority again. I find Mediaplayer and Quicktime to be two of the best product's on the market and I'm glad too mediaplayer is included. If is wasn't website's would be using allot more different player's than they do now. I for one dont wont to have to download a different player everytime I wont to check out a clip or something.

The other player I use allot mainly for movies is PowerDvd

Windows is an operating system not a media player. To improve an operating system would be tweaking code and interface changing.

I wondered how long till communism would come into this

Free enterprise is only in the interests of the public when there is competition, for competition there needs to be a chance of victory, after victory there is no competition. The system breaks down.

But then you have the anti-trust laws and regulation, so this removes any hope of victory, complacency and price fixing begin and the system breaks down again.

Gosh, back on topic :)

I can't remember which version of WMP it was, it was the one that came with win98, but that was the best version because it had just a very simple interface and didn't do annoying things like create a My Music folder in your home directory everytime it loaded.
Quicktime was good, but the registration reminder and upgrade notice became very wearing. Realplayer was always just awful.

Winamp v2.x was of course, damn near as perfect :) I use xmms now, which is a clone for X.

The best media player that I have used has to be Xine, plays just about every file format included qt, rm and wmv.

You must have misread somewhere, nowhere have I intended to imply that there are no alternatives, merely that MS use their dominant position to push their media player on people. And to play windows media files, I still have to have a copy of WMP for the codecs, and for some funny reason these days a lot of videos seem to be distributed in wmv format.

I think the reason it was first included was because of help files etc. I remember windows 95 had allot of .avi files. I just can't believe Microsoft done that either. Fancy trying to help people out. Damn those pesky buggers lol

What happens if you uninstall Media Player via add/remove windows components, install the codecs (available in lots of download locations) and use Winamp to view your WMV or WMA files?

No, the point is not that you can do it if you want, the point is that the vast majority of computer users don't know how to, and don't care - they just want what's the simplest option. The simplest option is just to stick with WMP because it's there, and the only reason it's there is because its manufacturer has an unfair advantage in that regard.

All that said, there is something to be said for M$'s own suggestion to the EU, which was rather than forcing them to remove WMP, they should have been forced to add Quicktime and Real Player.

In all honesty, that would probably be the best option. On the first run it could then ask which player you wish to use as default.

Want to talk Alger Hiss?

The Democrats of the 50s were different. Although they had the touch of the left, they meant to do good. I can see myself vote for Lieberman, who I feel that while he has the touch of the left, he is a capitalist. Today's Democrats have moved so far left that they're alienating their voter base. The likes of Dean, Chomsky, and Jesse Jackson are running the party and it has become a nest for the ultra-left communists.

There is no difference between communism and socialism except that one proposes to enslave society by force, and the other by vote.

If you want to call me an extremist, then call Reagan, Lincoln, Washington, Jefferson, Madison, and the rest of the Founding Fathers also extremists. I'm sorry, but I'm just not about to sing Marx's praises no matter how much good his intent was.

No no not Realplayer not a operating system over an operating system. What MS has done is really out of order anyway. I think everyone knows this. They spend time and money developing operating systems. Put things on there people will need to get them started. I mean just who the heck do they think they are putting this kinda stuff on there own system :Yikes:

It is ridiculous. You want to use laws to further your vendetta against Microsoft, not to bring "choices" to the consumer. The consumer already have choices, and Microsoft is just making it incredibly easy for consumers. Something they have always done (and Linux has not), and now the Microsoft-wannabe's are all upset because they can't possibly create as good a product as Microsoft. :td:

Mac programs made by Microsoft aren't as good as ones made by apple.

Maybe it's to do with the fact the company makes the operating system, or maybe microsoft just aren't that good. Maybe apple are keeping secrets from them.

They wouldn't necessarily have to be installed per se, the installer would just have to be on the system and then installed at the users request.

I have no objection to that, WMP for mac is terrible. But's its small and non-instrusive. Once people compare that to quicktime they'll probably never use it unless they have to - I don't

No, I plan on operating on my beliefs and principles as much as I can in the world the way that it is. If others like what they see and choose to follow similar beliefs then all well and good, if they don't nevermind. These principles are only unrealistic in todays world, they are not impossible to achieve over (a long) time. That is no reason for me abandoning them.

I use both the real and quicktime alternative - i've not tried installing the 'proper' ones in a while - although my laptop came with real one installed in it.

I don't know if I really need to install realplayer 10 - as winamp and windows media player pretty much cover what I want. The real and qt alternative play my ram and mov files.

Real on the other hand, is so full of crap, I just can't bear to install it. Unless Real 10 is drastically different from the previous garbage, I won't install it.

Why is it that you advocate restriction of fundamental liberties and freedoms when you walk through the door into a factory or business? Who are you to tell another company how to run itself? Who are you to force companies to go into certain directions, or to prevent companies from expanding into certain fields?

I'm sure you would object if all your personal actions were to be reviewed and planned by a higher authority. Your life just wouldn't work out. The same can be said for corporations and businesses. The economies of the above-mentioned countries are prime example of what planned economies end up with.

The United States' GDP per capita is $37,000. The quasi-free economies of western Europe can't even reach $30,000 except for a few single exceptions. The former planned economies of eastern Europe is even worse. China's GDP per capita is below $4,000.

So no, planned economies do not work, and Europe is drifting steadily over to the left that advocate exactly that. Restricting a company's freedom to innovate is a bad idea. Luckily, the United States is still around so even if you restrict innovation, research, development, and entrepeneurship, you can still marginally reap the benefits of American ingeniuty and innovation.

See here: http://www.time.com/time/europe/maga...574849,00.html

Europe gain it's dominance by controlling markets and limiting imports. The USA did the same. One you have a position of dominance (by limiting imports) you then cry for free markets, becasue you have dominance and you know if others protect their markets they may be able to catch up with that dominance.

Just look at Japan and the 'asian tigers' and compare them with brazil. Japan and the asian tigers built their economies from third world to first world by controlling markets. South america followed the doctrine of free markets (imposed by US and Europe) and they are f*cked.

If you believe in free markets then presumably you have written to your president to object to the tarrifs imposed on foreign steel imports?

If you read Adam Smiths writtings on the free market (the father of free market ideas), then he is totaly clear that free markets require free movement of labour. So are you going to open the border with Mexico and allow a free market in labour as well? I think not. Free markets is a 'do as we say not as we do' rant from those at the top of the heap, designed specifically to keep them at the top of the heap. It is the primary mechaism by which powers like the USA maintain their power. It has nothing to do with 'freedom'. It's about dominace.

Hang on. In one breath you denounce Europe as 'drifting towards socialism and planned economies', then in the next breath you want us to contrast Communist East Germany with West Germany? Last time I looked at my atlas, West Germany was a European country. I have been suggesting all along that your point of view is fundamentally flawed because it only takes account of extremes (Capitalism Vs Communism). This demonstrates my point neatly. Western Europe is as red as a London bus by your reckoning, yet its economy is demonstrably more successful than was achieved by that most loyal of the former Communist European states, East Germany.

Who I am is a free citizen of a democratic country, with a right to help determine the function, priorities and freedoms of the society in which I live.

Consider these two contrasting statements:

There is no such thing as society - Margaret Thatcher

No man is an island, entire of itself. Every man is a piece of the continent, a part of the main. If a clod be washed away by the sea, Europe is the less, as well as if promontory were, as well as if a manor of thy friend's or of thine own were. Any man's death diminishes me, because I am involved in mankind; and therefore never send to know for whom the bell tolls; it tolls for thee - John Donne

The evidence of my eyes is that the latter is true and the former is not. Therefore everybody in my society has a responsibility to every other. If people, whether personally or corporately, refuse to acknowledge this responsibility, I reserve my democratic right to use Law to make them change their ways.

As Erol has pointed out, 'liberty and freedom' is all to often the cry of protectionism. What did you make of GW Bush's protectionist action on steel tariffs? Hardly the actions of a true capitalist.

Either the figures back up your point, or they don't. You can't pass off 'a few single exceptions' just because they don't fit your argument. GDP per capita figures from the world bank for 2002 put Luxembourg, Switzerland, Norway and Lichenstein ahead of the US. I will grant you Lichenstein as an exception as it is minute. The others may well be very small by US standards, but we might well ask why the US, with its vast natural resources, and having escaped WWII with its infrastructure virtally intact, is not doing rather better?

Your sign-off proves what I have suspected - that you are allowing hand-on-heart patriotism to cloud your rational judgement. You analysis of political systems is deeply inadequate, your analysis of GDP and its significance is flawed and you have completely failed to account for wider factors that have helped to determine the economic status of Western Europe and North America in the last 50 years.

And what has all this got to do with Realplayer?

Can anyone who's tried realplayer 10 say whether it's less overbloated than previous versions. I'm willing to bet it's not.

While I have realone installed, I never use it. A handy little winamp plugin (just search google for tara winamp realaudio) lets you play all realaudio and video in winamp. You need realplayer/realone installed for it's codecs, but winamp plays the files cleanly without stealing system resources and making your system unstable.

I DO NOT recommend that you download it as it can crash.
