On your first point - no, you're not.......
Other posters' views may differ, but as someone else said in another thread/context, my view is 'meh!'. ;) |

Re: Coming Soon to Virgin TV (2013) Vol. 1.
Are there no channels on VM that Sky customers want in the same way as the popular atlantic?
Is it not possible for a new channel to be created that shows most of the atlantic shows but 6 months behind? I don't know the in and outs of how the media deals happen, so it may sound like a silly question, although just uneducated. |
Re: Coming Soon to Virgin TV (2013) Vol. 1.
"popular atlantic"?
According to BARB, Sky Atlantic is less watched that C5+1, 5USA, Alibi, BBC4, Challenge TV, Fox, Quest, Really (and others) and on a par with 4Music. |
Re: Coming Soon to Virgin TV (2013) Vol. 1.
This thread alone shows it is popular and desirable.
---------- Post added at 13:59 ---------- Previous post was at 13:54 ---------- Would it not have lower viewing rates simply because only sky customers have Atlantic so less have access to it compared to the other less exclusive channels? ;) |
Re: Coming Soon to Virgin TV (2013) Vol. 1.
So it's popular, but not watched by many people?
Oooookaaaay then....:D Sky has 10.3 million TV customers, and series like The Following has 300-400k viewers, Alan Partridge had around 200k viewers - 2 to 3% of the potential audience must be a new definition of 'popular' I hadn't come across before...;) |

What you suggest is a good idea, but I am pretty sure that the deal between Sky and HBO prevents that happening. Many TV shows have first run and second run rights, where a pay TV channel shows it first and a Freeview TV channel shows it a year or so later. Castle is an example; Alibi show it first and channel 5 show it later. I can't think of any Sky show, that is first shown on a Sky pay TV channel and then shown on a non Sky freeview channel later. So it looks as if Sky buys both first and second run rights to all the shows they buy. Plus, HBO seem to like to restrict how their content is shown, so that isn't likely to help. So, although your idea is a good one, I just can't see it happening. Sky have allowed some of their Atlantic content to be shown on other channels, namely the first seasons of Game of Thrones and Smash. But there is no guarantee that future seasons will be shown anywhere except Atlantic. |

I understand your point, but as I said, Sky TV has over 10 million customers, and only around 2-3% appear to be viewing these 'popular' programmes.

But when has 'popular' been the only criteria to determine the quality of a show? I suspect that many highly acclaimed TV shows wouldn't do too well in the popularity stakes. |
Re: Coming Soon to Virgin TV (2013) Vol. 1.
I would agree with you, but a poster in this thread/page did state that
