wmv is dissapointing but I guess xvid isnt favourable in the pay for market because its popular for pirated formats yes is far superior. Also I am not sure if drm works in xvid.

I praise aol for not going the torrent route tho providing the files by proper means from a fast server. I think any paid for content shouldnt rely on p2p protocols.

I doubt they have finished the 3mb people yet. It could be the summer before we see any upgrade from 2mb.

I wouldn't be suprised if they had a 10mbit option with a lower cap level, maybe 30-40gb a month and run it alongside the unlimited 2mbit.

Re: *ALL* ntl 10Mb Discussion (Part 3)

yes I'm sure. it'll be 10meg with a smaller 'allowance'.

Chrysalis 17-02-2006 13:33

Re: *ALL* ntl 10Mb Discussion (Part 3)

no chance until current allowance will be enforced else they would be nothing stopping people pay 17.99 and use a 100 gig on 10 meg. Also bear in mind their is saturation problems on ntl's network at the moment and you still ask for them to sell more bandwidth on top of currently oversold bandwidth, if ntl were to rollout 10 meg tommorow to the other 2 tiers how do you think the network would cope? bear in mind most of their customer base are on the lower tiers so its a much bigger rollout.

well they'd better pull their fingers out at NTL and get moving on shifting the 2mb users to 10mb asap as otherwise NTL are going to look pants compared to ADSL (in headline speed terms):-

www.theregister.co.uk/2006/02/22/plusnet_isp/

and yes I know a lot of ADSL lines cant do 8mb but in marketing terms it will be beating NTL in a month or 2!

I wouldn't agree. All that Ntl need to say is they can offer speeds up to 2MB faster than the maximum ADSL can provide (and a lot more than the average ADSL) speeds.

For headline grabbing a 2 digit number is better than 1 every time.

Umm ntl offer 10mbit how do they look pants?

I wouldnt count plusnet as a credible comparison, I may have my issues with ntl but take a read at adslguide and you will see plusnet have become a mockery. They making the profits by forcing all sorts of shaping that puts anything other then http down to 512kbit and 256kbit speeds, so essentially their 8meg service is a 8meg browsing service and a 512kbit ftp/nntp service and 256kbit p2p service. Oh and they have no 8meg service they were marketing it for a good few months before people realised noone actually had it and they were all on 2meg so paying almost £40 for a heavily shaped 2meg connection. The grass isnt always greener on the other side.

If ntl were to rollout 10meg to the middle tier it would be dumb considering their is no bandwidth for it ubr's are creeking and peering is bursting at the brim they need to sort these problems out before they starting giving out more bandwidth.

pants because you can only get it for £35 a month. these ADSL suppliers will be offering it for a lot less. plusnet - £21.99 a month.

have you read it yet or still just big eyed over the price tag?

they have low prices yes but what you get is very small for your money, and is certianly a much worse service then ntl, they were for many months selling a upto 8meg service with a higher price tag that was always a 2meg product because they had never got round to using llu as they planned.

ntl 10meg 34.99 is although sometimes heavily congested in "some" areas is unshaped on all protocols. Has a unofficial 75 gig cap. Plusnet go mental if you use more then 10 gig a month and if you top 30 or so gig a month you find yourself on a managed traffic plan where speeds are severely throttled on all protocols.

Re: *ALL* ntl 10Mb Discussion (Part 3)

Most ADSL suppliers will be shaping, have terms and conditions and caps attached.

Zen have long been a bastion of uncapped products, even they are admitting that 8Mbit uncapped isn't viable at a half-decent price. http://www.zen.co.uk/about.aspx?page=106

Also you think that the speeds on ntl 10Mbit are variable I can assure you that you'll see a lot of instability on BT's offerings due to contention as well.

£25 a month for 8meg and a decent usage allowance beats NTL's 2meg for £25 doesn't it?

Depends on how you see it, the consensus here seems to be a lower burst speed which is unmetered is preffered over a higher speed that has a cap especially if the higher speed is unreliable. Zen I will hold with high credibility as they seem to set their prices at a level where they can sustain their service.

Home 250 £17.99 288kbps 288kbps Unlimited
Zen 8000 Active £24.99 8192kbps 448kbps 20GB downloads
Zen 8000 Pro £34.99 8192kbps 448kbps 50GB downloads

for 17.99 on ntl you get 1meg unmetered but with lower upload speed. For 24.99 you get 2meg unmetered and of course ntl outdoes them on the 34.99. What you not picking up on here is 2 key points.

1 - ntl do not have proper monitoring in place and enforcement and so if they rolled out a 24.99 10meg service with lower cap there would be problems with people abusing it and using more then the 34.99 cap level.

2 - their is problems now with just the top tier on 10meg where ntl do not have the capacity to provide the service on a national level, do you read the forums? ntl are playing catchup with their network right now and need to get the bandwidth in place to enable them to further rollout. Zen on the other hand have always kept their capacity ahead of demand so dont have contention problems this enables them to rollout higher speeds on a better timescale.

Re: *ALL* ntl 10Mb Discussion (Part 3)

and you need a BT phone line for ADSL.

Chrysalis 23-02-2006 16:01

Re: *ALL* ntl 10Mb Discussion (Part 3)

that as well yeah, for someone like me who has a landline anyway it doesnt bother me tho but will bother other's who hate landlines.

I am looking at the adsl market and it is splitting into 2 distinct league's. The conference is the bt wholesale providers who are struggling with traffic cost's, like plusnet and zen, zen are much more viable tho and honest. The premiership been LLU providers such as ukonline and bulldog who are able to offer much higher cap levels or even unmetered at higher speeds. LLU compared to ntl is very attractive and in that manner ntl looks poor value for money but compared to bt wholesale ntl is turning out the winner in terms of what you get for your £.

Don't expect anything for sometime yet. It's only the middle of February. The plans for 10meg rollout to the lower tiers have always been "by the end of 2006". That's another 10+ months away yet.

it's end of feb in a few days dude! not mid.

and I cant believe they'd be daft enough to keep us waiting until late in the year as most ADSL companies will soon be advertising their services as (upto) 8meg. the headline rates is all that the consumer falls for in the mass market so NTL will need to step up a gear asap and have all their tiers competing with the '8meg' opposition or look like the poor relations.

Why? NTL can advertise this:

Broadband from ntl, from £17.99 / month with speeds up to 10Mbit.

That's a little misleading but every bit as accurate as the advertising that ADSL suppliers will be doing. If they only offer an 8Mbit tier they're insane, they'll need cheaper lower cap tiers at the very least.

People complain about what the point is in 10Mbit tiers without high caps, people complain about pricing, people complain about speeds.

Can't please them all, however if it's down to advertising there are several ways to shaft the consumer ;)

Also can I point out that Plusnet haven't actually revealed WHAT they are doing for the 8Mbit deals yet, and are confirming this next week.

Chrysalis 24-02-2006 20:00

Re: *ALL* ntl 10Mb Discussion (Part 3)

I found this for plusnet

http://www.plus.net/support/broadban...5d92f4c3a0575a

Broadband Plus Up to 8Mb for 34.99
Broadband PAYG Up to 8Mb for 14.99
Broadband Premier Up to 8Mb for 39.99

PAYG I believe has 1 gig inclusive, plus is very heavily shaped so it is pretty much only useable for http, and premier is more then ntl's 10meg and slower and still shaped.

http://usergroup.plus.net/report_pncapacity.php

Nice report showing plusnet's 100:1 contention.

Ignition 24-02-2006 21:00

Re: *ALL* ntl 10Mb Discussion (Part 3)

Nice, they can only handle 68% of their customers being online at one time, and 100:1 contention and the fact it semi-works goes to show how deep the shaping is.

JonathanLH 24-02-2006 22:28

Re: *ALL* ntl 10Mb Discussion (Part 3)

After seeing some friends use plus.net (not an ntl area) I can quite honestly say plus.net is very bad, they had the premier service and it was terrible except for about 1am-7am!
It was replaced with Zen :)

Re: *ALL* ntl 10Mb Discussion (Part 3)

I had used this thread for much information gathering, before my complaint to NTL at the consistent 5-6mb speeds I was getting on my Terayon J210 Cable Modem (Cambridgeshire area).

Thought I owed putting something back...so I phoned NTL expecting and prepared for a bit of a scrap, and I did get a bit of a runaround.

Ended up handed back to Customer Services after the technical people agreed "The Terayon 210 cannot handle 10mb, and at most it delivers about 6.5mb sustained throughput: you need a modem upgrade - but I cannot arrange that for you". Customer Services defaulted to the "modem upgrades cost £50 argument", so I insisted I spoke to a Manager. It took some time, but I was persistent, and when faced with the manager the conversation went along the following lines:

Me: "Your technical people say my modem cannot handle 10mb"
NTL: "I'm sorry sir, its against our policy to upgrade modems unless a £50 fee is charged"
Me: "So I can't have a 10mb connection?"
NTL: "Not unless you pay £50 sir, or we can downgrade your line back to 2mb"
Me: "So if a new customer orders a 10mb service, you provide a modem that cannot actually deliver that kind of speed?"
NTL: "Er....no sir, a new customer would get a 10mb capable modem"
Me: "So what you are telling me is that I should cancel my service, and re-order to get the right modem for free"
NTL: <silence>
Me: "If thats the case, I wish to cancel my service please."
NTL: "Will you bear with me for a moment sir."
Me: "Sure"
NTL: "Sir, I'll be pleased to offer you a free upgrade as a measure of goodwill, when would be convenient for an engineer to visit?"
....

So anyone in a similar position, follow the above.

Is this the same if you bought your modem? I'm still using my CMX modem and get 8.5mbit. I'm not too fussed at the mo but will eventually ask for a new modem. I'm still entitled to a rental modem so will I have to pay this £50 fee. If I do, i'd love to get the NTL CEO and rips his balls off and serve them as dessert in the NTL canteen.

I would not expect to pay £50 in this case, since you are paying for an ntl rented modem then they should provide you one, FOC (I'm assuming you are paying the full price, and not getting the £5 discount still).
