The launch of Drama +1 on VM must be imminent, as it has now been added to the list of channels included in Mixit / Big.

https://www.virginmedia.com/shop/tv/channels

Good Food, HD and +1 have all been removed ahead of the closure of the channels. No sign of an HD or +1 variant for Food Network though.

Drama +1 on VM will come in useful as some of their series are always on at the same time as many other good series.

Indeed.
I find all Skys SD channels, including Sky News, almost unwatchable due to their fuzzy downgraded PQ. The conspiracy theorist in me thinks Sky deliberately downgrade their SD quality hoping customers pay extra to upgrade to channel packages that include their HD variant.

Can't say I find Sky's SD channel quality to be bad. But we have a Full HD 32 inch screen which we are perfectly happy with, maybe it's the bigger screens it becomes an issue.

You may well be right. I've tried changing my V6 settings from 1080p down to the other resolutions including 576i, but noticed no real difference. However, when I switched my 43" TV screen size from 16:9 ratio to 4:3, I did notice PQ improved slightly on all the SD channels.

Since you mention settings, the 32 inch Full HD screen I previously mentioned is set to 1080p. Our previous TV was set the same, and was also 32 inch, but it had a non-standard resolution that wasn't quite Full HD, but was higher than 720p and would happily downscale a Full HD signal to this in-between resolution. So I noticed a little difference when we got a new TV a couple years ago, but mostly for the better, as would be expected.

Sounds like my TV is the same as your old one. It is a 9 year old Samsung plasma 768p HD ready, that manages to upscale and downscale usually fine. I do probably need to upgrade to a modern swish full HD/UHD led, but cant justify the cost yet until this one dies and its still going strong! Damn! LOL!

Quite. :D

Our Bravia was 10+ years old before it finally failed. There wasn't going to be regular UHD content, so there was no need for replacing with UHD screen, especially when UHD doesn't come in screens that small (not that I call it small), and a bigger than 32 inch screen wouldn't suit the living room. So we decided to save money on a replacement and just get an HD screen. It made sense to get a Full HD one rather than another in-between one, so we did upgrade. The funniest bit was the progress in LCD technology meant the new 32 inch screen was much smaller than the old one, simply because the screen frame was much smaller...and the unit much thinner too. So the added benefit was the living room felt bigger! :)

The replacement was a third of the £ of the original, and that's not inflation adjusted.

So you could probably have got a 40" tv which would have been little difference in size to your old 32" set

If 36 inch was still a standard size TV then maybe. But I prefer the room seeming bigger. The amount of time considered regarding buying a 40 inch screen was very little, and mostly about how to avoid buying anything bigger than 32 inches.

No, but most of the stuff on there is available in HD or can be upscaled. There isn't an HD variant available at the moment, but the point is, there should be. Hopefully the provision of HD versions of all former UKTV channels was part of the recent carriage arrangements agreed with Virgin Media.

However, I've seen no links to support this yet.

Ironically it would make more sense to have Drama in HD than Gold as most of the stuff on Gold is that old even upscaling is bad or it is studio stuff (about an hour a day) that doesn’t really matter.

Agreed. Some of the programmes on Drama are ok, actually, but I avoid them because of the picture quality.

The C068 stuff has been like that for a while, I can't seen anything that I've not seen for a while.

The Sans Nom on C071 I think is just where True Crime was. But it's late and I could be getting mixed up. :)

InternalF is not broadcasting in MPEG4 it broadcasting UHD also been broadcasting since July 2018.

No real idea when Preject2 is broadcasting for but it did move CO68 the few months back with Reallives +1.

We do not know what in hell Virgin are doing with CO68 we mean it broadcasting the following:

-THREE UHD Channels.
-THREE Red Button Channels
-18 Radio Channels.
-"Channel off air" Channel
-Unknown channel
-RealLives +1

When BBC One and BBC Two SD Channels was axe last December 4th on Channels 101 and 102. Virgin did confirm you has 12 months to view any recordings.

Virgin Media did axe Lifetime SD Channel on May 14th 2019 so you may have until May 14th 2020 to watch any current recordings before Virgin removed the channel from "Total Channels".

Virgin Media signs new deal with UKTV?

Virgin Media UK has moved Alibi HD from Virgin Channel 226 to Virgin Channel 212 (TruTV old EPG Slot). Plus Drama +1 has launch on Virgin UK Channel 226

Re: Coming Soon to Virgin TV (2019)

I didn't notice the logic at first but this Alibi HD move, to just below W HD (211/212), mirrors the SD versions of them on 125/126 and the +1s on on 190/191.

Good news, just need Drama HD now.
However, why cant VM just do a like for like swap on the epg with All the SD channels and their HD equivalents, so to bump them all up higher in the epg? Obviously only for customers with an HD package (XL/Full House/Maxit and higher). This is something Sky managed to do years ago and without upsetting the SD only customers.

Probably some limitation in the way the Tivo software works, or a legacy problem in the cable network. If they finally decide to launch the Horizon software Liberty Global use in their European operations in UK maybe this will be coded in a way that allows it.

Or maybe you could just select the HD only stuff from the EPG in the menu instead of 'all channels'.

WHY DO I THINK DISCOVERY IS SET TO AXE TRAVEL CHANNEL?

-Discovery has axe Travel Channel to make way for DMAX to launch on Freeview.
-Discovery has now axe Travel Channel +1 to make way for the soon to launch Quest (Ireland) to launch on Sky. Why not use an old Good Food slot?

The Good Food satellite transponder space seems to have remained with UKTV, as Really and Home are due to move frequency soon.

The moving of Really and Home from UKTV's satellite transponder could be the final part of the jigsaw to allow UKTV to have HD versions of all its channels.

The services that are moving, or have closed, on satellite means there was at least 6 SD and 1 HD channels-worth of space freed.

Drama+1 launching brought this down to 5 SD and 1 HD and meant all UKTVs remaining channels had a +1.

5 SD channels is enough space for an HD channel so 5 SD and 1HD could (maybe, assuming there aren't some complications) become 2 HD channels instead. This could mean that Drama HD and Yesterday HD could launch and UKTV would have completed the HD set.

Just a theory, and likely an oversimplification on my part. But a possibility.

---------- Post added at 13:03 ---------- Previous post was at 12:57 ----------

If you are wondering where the channels come from.

The channels about to move off UKTVs satellite transponder are: Home, Home+1, Really and Really (Irish adverts version).

So 4 SD.

Add to that the closure of Good Food SD, Good Food +1, and Good Food HD. Which is 2 SD and 1 HD.

And you get 6 SD and 1 HD. Minus Drama+1 launch and you get 5 SD and 1 HD.

I had no idea there was a version of Really for the Irish ad market.

Ratings-wise since its removal from Freeview and Freesat, the Travel Channel is dead in the water.

The latest audience share stats:

Travel Channel 0.02%
Travel Channel +1 0%

Travel Channel in the US has become a mainly paranormal TV channel, called Trvl.

Travel Channel in the US has become a mainly paranormal TV channel, called Trvl.

Travel Channel was often around the 0.32% mark before they made DMAX FTA and swapped it with Travel Channel on Freeview and Freesat. Immediately Travel Channel went down to those low levels it is now, so you can put that plunge down simply to that reduction in its distribution.

DMAX was a 0.03% channel before it went FTA and it has been hovering about the 0.30% mark until the 0.41% for the last available month, in August.

So what Discovery did basically pretty much swapped the ratings. But it has a wider remit so should appeal to a wider demographic, so the rating potential is higher in then long run, which was likely why they did it.

Given the Travel Channel ratings plunge was self inflicted they could maybe get it back by reinstating it to Freeview, using one of the 2 vacated Sony spaces that haven't been filled yet. Those spaces weren't available when they made the swap.

I hope they don't copy the US version.

An idea Really may become Eurosport News and also launch on Freeview using Really slot if Discovery axe Really.

Given Discovery Shed has been put at the end of the Sky entertainment section and wasn't moved up in the recent Discovery EPG shuffle up that happened after Good Food was demoted to alongside it, and it's ratings are the same as Travel Channel (a 0.02% in August) why would they give it a +1 version? Travel Channel was shuffled up the Sky EPG when Good Food was demoted, Shed wasn't. That suggests Shed is more likely to be axed than Travel Channel.

Given Really has much better ratings than most of their channels, a 0.70% in August, I think it's more likely to get a +1.

Eurosport News was axed in January 2018, I can't see them bringing it back.

Well Sky is calling Travel Channel +1 as "Channel Closure" so until we see any tests on Sky for the relaunch we will readd it to our list of channels we may get on Virgin Media list.

I've tried Waeather Gripe and found it infuriatingly pointless.

I think VM should concentrate on video apps such as Disney + and Apple + and any new sports apps that are launched. The games selection is pretty lame if you ask me. I'm not sure whether the V6 software is up to the good ones.

If Sky do launch an Sky Crime HD Channel and if Virgin have the rights to broadcasting it tests will appear on Virgin Media by Friday.

*At time of posting we have no idea on what that unknown channel on Sky is but it was testing with Sky Sports News last Thursday.

Why would they add +1 channels in SD when they have deleted the main SD channel channels? I think VM is aiming at just providing HD versions of all channels that provide them in the future.

I'm not sure why you would want +1 channels anyway - haven't all VM subscribers got recorders these days?

I think they mean will the +1s be moved up in the EPG to be on the number next to the HD channel.

E.g. TLC SD is 167, TLC HD is 168 and TLC +1 is currently 169. They are probably wondering if TLC +1 will move up 1 number.

Besides, having a recorder doesn't help if you've already missed the start of a programme.

One of the tuners has to be on that channel. If you want to watch a show on a channel that isn't on one of the tuners you've missed it until it's on Catch-up, or a scheduled repeat, unless it has a +1.

I believe one of the updates, a while back, disabled the non-Live tuners on original VM Tivos to speed up their performance, so now only V6 boxes have the the ability for all their tuners.

I often make sure the other 5 tuners are for channels I may want to rewind if I have nothing scheduled to record.

That's interesting MB. Thanks.

What I don't understand is why they are switching the SD versions first for Sky 1 and Sky Witness, but all the others the HD channel is first, except for Sky Arts...which I can understand because there isn't an adjacent number so they opted for the one with the widest availability.

Perhaps there are more changes to come when Sky Comedy launches - unless that's what 139 and 140 will be used for.

Comcast own E! but both What's on TV and Total TV Guide do not list E! and Sky Two.

Thanks for that. I’m actually surprised VM are not closing SD channels and promoting the HD version, like with Discovery. Try TV & Satellite Week as they list both channels, MB.

It has to be agreed with the channel provider, and given they only recently did a new deal with Sky if it was agreed to it would be happening.

Given there are so few exclusive channels to the Maxit/XL packs, it could be argued they needed something to remain that would appeal to those who aren't interested in the BT Sport channels, it's mostly HD versions that remain.

I was going to buy Radio Times but I pick up Total TV Guide.

Ah i see thanks for explaining :)

Edit.

Judging by the listings for SKY Crime next week i don't think Sony and Discovery crime channels have anything to worry about.
