And finally...

Extreme Sports*on channel 525 will be unavailable from*31st*December 2015 at 6am. This is a decision taken by the channel provider to remove the channel and cease broadcasting in the UK. Any recordings will be available for playback for 3 months.

Some of extreme sports content will be moving to BIKE, BIKE is a free to air sports channel on SKY and sattelite, don't know if it's on vm but with vms track record it most likely isn't.

Is Bike owned by the same owners as Extreme Sports?

If it isn't on VM, you can watch it on Roku channel 085.

It is owned by Bike Media Ltd. The channel is already running in some European countries such as Germany and Italy. Extreme was owned by Chellomedia (Zone) but appears to now be owned by AMC with the branding rights with Extreme Limited.

I wonder if the closure of this could lead to the launch of JimJam AMC seem to be expanding the channel across Europe and Asia quite quickly

If they can't be bothered to use the bandwidth on broadcasting it in HD (I'm sure the programmes would have been filmed in HD), there is no point in having such channel.

I only watch/record in HD now, I'm sure I'm not alone in this. When will VM make HD the new SD? ;)

With the newer boxes from VM being able to output scaled down SD from HD channels it must only be a matter of time before all output is in HD?

I would have thought so too mate. It makes sense, as I can't imagine many/if any programmes are still filmed in a SD format.

Bear in mind there are still LOTS of SD-only boxes out there, and most channels don't have an HD version.

If VM ever offer HD only channels and we still have to record to the box (rather than the cloud), then I hope they give us a hard drive with five times the existing capacity!

Wuaki being a prime example of this, you buy a movie but it only has a 3 year licence so after 3 years you have to buy it again.

It would mean the cessation of expensive dual illumination. It looks like the PSB channels will be going HD only from around 2020.

This means massive savings for satellite and DTT, not sure how this would affect VM though as they own their own capacity.

SD only requires about a quarter of the bandwidth of HD, so the transmission cost savings would be minimal. Meanwhile HD-only On Demand services would require far more bandwidth.

Amazon are covering their backsides:

Quote:

d. Availability of Purchased Digital Content. Purchased Digital Content will generally continue to be available to you for download or streaming from the Digital Service, as applicable, but may become unavailable due to potential content provider licensing restrictions and for other reasons, and Amazon will not be liable to you if Purchased Digital Content becomes unavailable for further download or streaming. You may download and store your own copy of Purchased Digital Content on a Compatible Device authorised for such download so that you can view that Purchased Digital Content if it becomes unavailable for further download or streaming from the Digital Service.

In a discussion I had recently with an Amazon rep, compatible devices are limited to tablets and smart phones. She claimed you could download it to the Fire TV, but I don't think that is correct.

Given that a Standard Definition US 22 episode season is around 36 Gig (at least it is when I rip my personal DVDs) that becomes unpractical in my view.

Of course, due to the paranoid content providers, you can't download it to a computer hard drive.

When does the VM platform freeze begin, as this may mean it cannot be added if the freeze has already started?

The change freeze began on Thursday, but this wouldn't prevent channel line-up changes (as you saw on January 1st this year)

The Mail On Sunday reported that Liberty arch rival Comcast have held talks with ITV over a possible takeover. Liberty Global own 10% of ITV, so that would make interesting boardroom discussions should a bid occur.

http://www.dailymail.co.uk/money/mar...Universal.html

Buy ITV shares now while you still can! A bunfight will likely happen in the new year between some of the big US media companies and BT vying to gain control of ITV. Perhaps even Liberty may join the fray too.

Liberty's stake is more an opportunistic purchase, I can't see the business case for them spending a few £bn on a largely FTA broadcaster. In fact, they will be quite pleased if they can turn a profit on their stake.

....yep, plus it gives them a say in what happens to ITV, so they get inside info on all the financial details of a bid and what the offeror intends to do with ITV in the future.

I fully expect BT to buy ITV in the end. I would be very surprised if ITV were allowed to be gobbled up by a US major.

I doubt the current government would be too concerned if a US company acquired ITV. The FT is sceptical and suggests that ITV's profits may have peaked. ITV is small fry to Comcast so it could acquire ITV painlessly - if there was a desire to do so.
I think ITV will remain independent for at least the next five years until the results of cable-cutting and Netflix are known and ITV's value can be properly judged.
I still think that there is a chance that Liberty Global will split in two and sell its European assets to Vodafone.

BT TV customers to be the first to enjoy 4k Netflix. Surely VM should have been interested in this? If BT can provide 4k down the phone lines, wouldn't the VM fibre optic broadband have been better?

ozsat 22-12-2015 21:27

Re: Coming Soon to Virgin TV (2015) Vol. 2

BT can't supply 4K to many of their customers - even those on inifinity.

4K Netflix is no good without a 4k tv - and with (almost any) 4k tv you get Netflix 4k anyway.

Amazon Prime have a much better and bigger 4K offering.

They get access to nearly all of it now anyway and Sky's deal for ITV Encore reputedly ends in June 2016. Issue is whether ITV will grow or if its audiences will be chipped away by streaming etc. If so, companies like Liberty Global will be better buying more cable companies as this is a growth area rather than ITV.

Don't see the point in this when Music On Demand has been on for many years.

Just tried to play a Vevo video on my phone. A message came up that I must download Adobe Flash. My understanding is that you cannot run this on modern phones. If I am correct Vevo is going to be very limited.

Following my comment in post 1871 that Vevo will not play on my phone as it does not support Adobe Flash, I have an HTC One M7. I have tried again with the same negative result. I am running Android 5.0.2

Running Android 5.0 on my Samsung Galaxy S3 mini - and the Vevo app plays fine.

Premier Sports (both SD and HD) have an extended FTV period, starting 06:00 on Wednesday going into the New Year on Sky. Does anybody know if this is being replicated on VM?

Extreme Sports will close at 06:00 on New Years Eve.
