With the aid of Classic Start I have my windows 8.1 looking and working just like win 7 only newer... I won't be going to win 10 ever though, if there's a win 11 I'll take a look, but Win 10 is a joke.

Microsoft have stated that Windows 10 is the last and that they will be doing updates to 10 instead of full blown releases. I think this is the way Apple are now doing OSX. I read somewhere the other day that company’s IT depts. are not moving to Windows 10 because of the extreme amount of snooping that Microsoft do via 10. There even putting ruddy adverts in the file manager screen now so what is next for there adverts maybe a advert on login that you cannot skip :)

Many companies are still on XP.

I'll bet that most companies would only leave windows 7 at the latest kicking and screaming when MS cease meaningful support for it.

Businesses probably need something like the old NT4 style where business & home use were completely separate products.

I remember being on a BETA for NT4

Re: [Update] Windows 10 Discussion

I loved NT4, I used it until XP came along, as the 16 bit versions of Windows at the time were so poor and would fall over if you gave them a hard stare. By the time SP6 came out, there wasn't anything that 16 bit windows could do, that it couldn't do as well (multimedia stuff mainly)

My main desk system is, along with office 2000 pro with the later docx, xlsx etc translators. Partly as I need legacy support for older 16 bit applications that can never be updated. A lot of NC* machines (Lathes, routers) are still on old DOS based systems with their data on 3 1/2" floppy drives.

A lot of applications are still 32 bit underneath and with a bit of fettling will run quite happily under XP. It's usually the installer that is the issue.

I was able to bash W7 pro into submission on the laptop with classic shell and some strategic registry hacks. W10 is a whole new can of worms.

This might happen sooner that you'd think..

https://support.microsoft.com/en-gb/...cle-fact-sheet

Windows 7 SP1 has already gone past the end of mainstream support. Extended support finishes in 2020. IIRC, After that, Microsoft will support it, but will charge a *lot* of money per machine to update it.

They do sort of have that in Windows 10. For consumers, there is Windows 10 home. For "power users" and small to medium businesses, there is Windows 10 Pro. For large businesses and other enterprises, there is Windows 10 Enterprise (which is only available if you are on one of Microsoft's Volume Licensing schemes).

Can we leave your bottom out of this please?:D

You can't "roll back" to w7 although you can reinstall a fresh copy and then install a back-up copy if you have one.

The "roll back" option is only available for 30 days and doesn't always work successfully.

For the those of you who are eager to get the Creators Update right away, you will be able to initiate the update manually, starting on April 5th, via Update Assistant. This option is intended for advanced users on devices running a licensed version of Windows 10.

Re: [Update] Windows 10 Discussion

I managed to download the Creators Update early and have clean installed it. The system is more or less built up to requirements and works OK. Quite a few possibly unwanted games and Apps are installed by default. I uninstalled most of them. The ones that wouldn't uninstall were taken off the tiled Start Menu.

I went carefully through the options and turned off anything that might have been related to advertising and haven't had any ads showing up.

The Control Panel looks as if it has been omitted at first glance but it is still there (type 'control panel' with the Start Menu open). It can be pinned to the Start Menu and from there, to the Taskbar. It might be possible to put it back where it used to be but I haven't found how yet.

The options to resize text only (menu, icon etc.) have been removed. It would have been better to have left them in. I don't like zooming all screen elements to more than 100%. The sizes of icon text, menu text and others can still be resized but it has to be done via .reg files (available from the Windows 10 Forums). Seems pointless to have left the controls out of the Personalise options.

A few days into using the update now. A few customisations of the tiled Start Menu upset it for a while. Tile positioning wasn't remembered but that looks to have settled down now.

All in all, the OS is running well and there hasn't been any of the advertising I've been reading about. Then again, trying Microsoft operating systems for oneself always could be a different experience to what is read about them.

I made sure the adverts were turned off in the setting before i updated. I do not give microsoft the chance to turn things on these days. There invasive monitoring made aure that loaded software to stop it months ago.

this is the software i use to stop them.

My work PC has been updated to the latest revision (16.x) IIRC.

I has removed the ability to adjust the font sizes in open windows.

The only way to make them bigger is use magnification, but this messes up the icon sizes. (Advanced Display options has been removed)

Even the IT guy can't see how to adjust this.

Windows 10 Question:

Can you still install Windows 10 from scratch (ISO download) and get it to activate...or do you need to upgrade a Win 7 installation? I know the freebie upgrade period has long since expired but I sure I read somewhere where was a way to install W10 and activate it.

Any ideas?

Yes if you have a key, look on a well known auction site where keys can be purchased for about £4.00.

The only existing key which will work is a Windows 10 key. If you are referring to a windows 7 or 8 key then you lost the free upgrade and need a W10 key.

No - I mean using an existing W10 key or two computers...

Re: [Update] Windows 10 Discussion

Depends what type of key you have. If it is just for 1 PC then that's all you can use it for. If it is for multiple ones then yes you can do it.

If for 1 only then that will be the original one it was installed on.

Hello Hom3r - I downloaded and used a .reg file as described in 'Option 2' in the Windows 10 Forums page linked to below. My icon text size is now 11, which is about right for me. I read a program called 'Winaero Tweaker' also has settings within it to adjust the text (only) size.

So I updated to the recent version and couldn't find the screen

It's these petty little changes that really gets my back up. They need to fix the bigger issues instead of little things like this. Biggest issue for me is still the forced downloads and install's of updates. They make big mistakes with there updates which they then take days and weeks to fix. I prefer to download updates ONLY after i have seen evidence that they have not messed up. That way i am not trying to fix problems they have created because they don't test there updates properly.

Please please please someone fix Elite so it runs on Linux. I hate having to duel boot between Linux and Windows poo at the moment.

Indeed, at some point soon I'd expect there won't be any further security updates for the builds prior to Creators update - I believe at the time that the next W10 update is released.

Overall I've not had any issues with Creators Update - the only one I did have on my Dell laptop was actually down to a Intel display driver issue, and that's now been fixed as Intel and Dell have released a new driver.

I'd go further, I'd say at some point M$ will trigger the update by force and the only way to avoid it would be to disconnect from the internet.

What he did can easily cause problems, unless it had been stuck for several hours in which case i would panic and do something similar.

I've not installed it yet as it was advised not to by MS last week.

So i tried all day yesterday to install Windows 10 on an old laptop(just to give me another working Windows PC if the main goes pear shaped as it is easier than using a tablet) that had previously had windows 10 running just fine.

First problem was it couldn't get passed the Windows logo and spinning dots, i fixed that eventually by turning off the wireless in the bios, which now gives me the new problem, i can't get passed the spinning dots and the wait a moment message, i even left it over night!

I have now given up and currently trying to install Windows 8.1 and see if i can upgrade to 10 from there!

---------- Post added at 10:26 ---------- Previous post was at 09:51 ----------

Windows 8.1 installed just fine, even activated using my old key, which i used to upgrade to Windows 10 on my main PC so i hope it doesn't mess up that activation!

Latest, the creators, whatever the mediatool downloads and installs.

Busy installing drivers now that i found for my lappy incase they didnt get updated by windows, but it is a very slow process as the HDD is slow.

I just find it strange i had no issues with the ethernet working in windows 8.1 and the fact i briefly had wireless working but it is now dead....... same goes for ethernet.

And when it comes to computers i HATE waiting for the bloody thing to install stuff to see if it gets working as i usually have a list of other things to try too.

Been installing some intel chipset drivers for the last 30mins........

Thanks for the offer but i always run the latest and this is just a backup computer so worst comes to the worst i will dump 8.1 back on it.

Anyway...... the intel driver install just exited with an error....... lol

Seems to be finally working with wifi with every boot now, i had to disable the Ethernet to make this happen as i couldn't get that working but as it is now stable and working and the fact it is only a backup laptop i am happy the way it is and i need to stop messing with it or i will still be doing it at 5am when i have to leave for work! :)

Just done a clean install on my laptop, been going very sluggish last few weeks. So backed up everything, emails etc (although forgot to backup my email contacts so a massive duh on my part) formatted the C Drive and hey presto it runs fast. Although am slightly miffed that they ended support for Windows Essentials in January without much fanfare, meaning I can't download it again. Now going to have to try Outlook.

I keep all my data on a separate drive for that reason, Windows and applications only on drive C

Anyone know how I can import my Live Mail .fol emails into Outlook? I'm quite desperate to sort this out, as I have every single email from work so need to be able to gain access to them again.

Need more info on the problem as i am googling .fol and getting know where, it keeps giving me eml files.

Also if i log into mail.live it redirects to outlook.com, so shouldn't all your emails be there?

Ok i have managed to download the Windows Live Essentials 2012 offline installer from a mirror website and installed it, it looks good, it is 106MB the site i got it from wasnt English so it is upto you if you want to risk it but it does install and look fine.

Just uploading it to my Onedrive and i will message you the link, when you have it installed, backup everything you need then migrate.

Had to upgrade to Creators due to some anomalous weird things happening.
Turns out it was a USB 3 docking station that was plugged into the hub on my monitor that was causing the issues.
Anyway, no issues with Creators apart from low memory warnings when I Alt/Tab out of a game back to the desktop. (have 16gb & never been an issue before)

Have just removed creators update. Has been running fine for a couple weeks but to-day chrome wouldn't work. After faffing around with some suggestions I found and it still wouldn't work despite being the latest update I reverted back to the previous version of Windows 10 and everything is working OK.

I currently have a very odd situation is that I cannot get iTunes to work on my laptop. I've tried everything I can think of and followed all workarounds I can find online (uninstalling / reinstalling, deleting files in user data folder, deleting registry entries etc)

If I try to run it, I can see it in the Task Manager but it just sits there with zero CPU usage and just will no show as an open program.

Hi Ben

Have tried these fixes:
https://www.groovypost.com/howto/tip...es-windows-10/

Go to C:\Program Files\iTunes, right-click "iTunes.exe", go to Compatibility tab, check the box next to "Run this program as an administrator" and click Apply. No need to uninstall/reinstall.

cheers

Just installed the latest Windows 10 update 2017-06 Cumulative Update for Windows 10 Version 1703 for x64-based Systems (KB4022716).

After every time i open Google Chrome it crashes Chrome and closes it, tried uninstalling and reinstalling Chrome and exactly the same thing happens.

If i remove that Windows update Chrome works as normal, has anyone else experienced this?

I'm sure this has probably got nothing to do with Windows 10 and it's shortcomings but interesting to note that some of Kaspersky's employees in the US have been spoken to by the FBI to clarify how they operate at base. There are many who view their operation with a great deal of suspicion.

My latest update is KB4022725 on a HP PC and the same thing happens excep tafter chrome goes unresponsive I can close it down and when it starts up it works OK (most times). On my Acer laptop (running the same update ) it works properly all the time.

Not sure if I should post this here or make a new thread. I have Win 10 installed over the original Win 7 Pro.

Not had many problems and have used a Samsung external drive for backups. now being told that drive is full so tried to install a 1TB drive in place of the Samsung. I was able to manually do a full backup and system image to the new drive but am now getting messages that Windows can't find drive etc.

If I try to manually force a backup it will not do it and formatting and re using the Samsung drive is now doing the same.

Can anyone recommend backup software using an external hard drive that works better than the Windows 7/10 mash up?

Jim.

Oh dear. I manually installed KB4022716 last week. Not had any problems so far so I guess I have been lucky.

Found a link that lists the problem areas. http://windowsreport.com/kb4022716-issues/

What do you guys think. Am I OK keeping the update or is it lulling me into a false sense of security before whacking me when I least expect it, should I consider uninstalling it now whilst I can?

The reason the update gave me issues was because of Comodo Firewall, i had to use system restore to get the PC usable again.

You could always uninstall the update or just hang in there if you think you don't see any issues, just make a new system restore point before you do it incase it doesn't create its own.

Every time I start W10 it now says it wants to do a restart but clicking on the message they are old ones. My annoyance with W10 on my main PC is rising (my laptop works perfectly) that I semi seriously considered Apple (shock horror).

The main PC is an HP with AMD processor, the Laptop is by Acer and Intel processor. Perhaps I should change the HP one?

This can happen when you update or just remove \add programmes what I do is a complete shut down avoid the restart . sometimes that fails as well as seems to think
its a windows update not a software change.

Give it a go, it is far faster. You may like it or hate it but for me i like the interface compared to Firefox and it has all the addons i use.

What amazes me is there are still people out there using IE!!!

IE works with my screen reader, chrome does not! And chromes built in screen reader is a tad basic.

Firefox is still my browser of choice, sadly there are still sites out there that are optimized to use I.E. and don't work properly using Firefox or Chrome. HSBC is one, my local council is another and several shopping sites my wife uses cause lots of grief if she forgets and starts using Firefox instead of I.E.

IE is the least "Safe" browser out there!

On another note there is a new version of Win10 coming out for "Real Pro users".
