Seems odd they added over 60 days before launch - when its a free (to sports customers) channel anyway.

They want people to register for two years free broadband in that time in order to counter people leaving when the Champions League coverage switches to BT.

IF, they have agreed to have these channels, how long does it take to press a button.

How do you know that it is not Sky that are stipulating the launch date? You are making some assumptions here, Arthur.

Please forgive me if this has been asked before, but does anyone know the channel numbers for the additioonal BBC Red Button channels starting on Monday 23 June?

There is a total of 5 SD channels on air - including the existing one at presentbut VM only carries the first one at the moment.

991 is RB1 but can anyone confirm any numbers for the extra ones? Thanks.

With Red Button 1 being on Channel 991 I think the rest will be on Virgin Channels 992, 993, 994, 995, 996 with HD Channel on 990 or 997.

Not now during the World Cup which ends 13 July. And probably not during the Commonwealth Games either (which are from 23 July-3 August). But expect some launches between and after these two events! With the Sky Sports HD channels except 5 estimated by me as launching on Thursday 17 July.

But Vince, is there any point in overcrowding the EPG with channels you would never watch? They still have to be paid for and you and I are coughing up. I certainly want choice, but I want choice based on quality, not banal programming.

I may have got a little too excited when I turned the TV over to Sky News and saw "Sky News HD" in the corner. Not too sure that the picture quality is actually in HD though and it's just the logo.

*At time of writing this, the top corner has gone back to Sky News. :(

Things can happen during change freeze if necessary, such as the BBC red button channels that launched this morning. But possibly not 'lacklustre' channels ;)

Old boy I agree but I literally have nothing else to look forward to. I'm not even being sarcastic or making a joke... I loved last year then we had dates and that for new channels and I'd wake up Tuesday morning or Friday morning to surprises and see the forum electric.

Will Sky broadcast an 'Sky1 +1' sign on Sky1 every Saturday when WWE is on.

But Sky1 +1 do not even broadcast on Virgin Media.

This is an interesting one. All press releases thus far say it will launch on Freeview, Freesat and Youview.

There hasn't been any mention of launching on the VM or Sky platforms, but a FTA channel on the Sky EPG would vastly increase viewers. I'm going to try and find out if VM will be carrying this in their version of Freeview (TV M).

All I can confirm is they will launch sometime from July 13th to August 1st.

Does this coincide with a major EPG reshuffle across all Sections or just the Sport MB?

With HD channels a good selling point as they are "free" with VM I would have thought they would have pushed them further up...or is it down...the EPG a lot sooner.

Some people on here really need to calm the [Mod Edit - asterisked out word removed]down.

We know the channels are coming... asking every 5 [Mod Edit - asterisked out word removed] minutes when, won't make them appear any quicker.

Sometimes I wonder what else people on here do except watch TV?!?!?!?!?

Ofcom controls threaten BT's power to buy Premier League football rights
Regulator considers tighter controls over wholesale prices BT charges competitors for piggy-backing broadband network

Juliette Garside
The Guardian, Thursday 19 June 2014 18.45 BST

BT Sport's master control room. Sports rights, including Premier League matches, have become key in BT's drive to win broadband customers.
BT's ability to spend heavily at the forthcoming Premier League auction is under threat after Ofcom proposed restrictions on its wholesale broadband profits.

Sports rights have become key in BT's drive to win broadband customers against competition from TalkTalk and BSkyB, with the company offering free subscriptions to sports channels when selling superfast internet connections.

But the watchdog has raised the prospect of tighter controls over the wholesale prices BT charges competitors for piggy-backing on its broadband network.

"This is a watershed," said telecoms expert James Barford at Enders Analysis. "It discourages BT from spending a lot more money in any future auction, including the Premier League. From Sky's perspective this is excellent news. Talktalk is very pleased because it gives some comfort that BT will stay honest."

The watchdog says that from next year it will police the margin between the wholesale price of BT fibre optic lines and the retail prices it charges customers.

The so-called margin control mechanism is designed to stop BT undercutting rivals.

TalkTalk and BSkyB have not built their own copper and fibre lines and rely on BT's network to sell a broadband service.

TalkTalk currently plays £8 a month for a BT fibre to the street cabinet service, but thinks the price should be closer to £5. TalkTalk's cheapest fibre package is £13.50 a month, while BT's is £16.

To calculate the margin charged by BT, Ofcom will take into account what the company has spent on rights, broadcasting and production for its BT Sport channels, such as the £900m deal to snatch Champions League rights from ITV and BSkyB.

This means the cost of the sports rights cannot be hidden within the margin between wholesale and retail prices.

TalkTalk and BSkyB argued the offer of free Premier League football and other contests should be taken into account because they make BT's broadband offering more appealing.

The move is likely to dampen BT's appetite to use sport as a loss leader and may force the acceleration of any decision to start charging for the sports channels.

The next Premier League auction will cover the rights to matches from the 2016/2017 season and analysts predict that competition between BT and BSkyB could drive up the price of a three-year deal from the combined £3bn that both companies paid out for the current deal.

The price of BT's copper broadband is already regulated, but Ofcom has so far resisted controlling fibre pricing to encourage BT to build out its superfast network. The first stage, covering cities and larger towns, is now complete.

Look to me like all the wee broadcasters want to pay less to use BT's copper broadband.

BT may start to offer BT Sports as part of their 'Family' pack.

I think nothing will happen to Virgin viewers until August 2016.

The words 'Pot' and 'Black' comes info this:

It OK for Sky to hold channels back from other networks.

But not OK for BT to do so they must pay £?m per year for the cost of running it for the other broadcasters to use it and keep calling it an other name.

Awww look Sky don't like someone playing them at their own game. Poor old Sky my heart bleeds for them.

Also cry baby Sky are putting their prices up in September so expect Virgin to announce price rises soon.

Is there a date yet for the launch of Sky Sports New HD on VM? Last I heard it was 2015.

Also, is anyone else having problems with the picture breaking up for Sky Sports News recently, it's unwatchable at the moment.

Still to see one.

Base on other new Sky Basic channel launches in the past Media Boy HQ think Sky Sports News HD and Sky News HD may not launch until October 2014.

Couldn't agree more. It's about time the authorities got on to Sky's backs as well - where is the consistency?

Yes, and Sky have exclusive access to first run HBO shows and we rely on Sky to enable us to see these shows.

Someone wants to do a bit of joined up thinking.

Thanks for the info, Blue.

You mean the network funded by public money many years ago , are you suggesting only BT should have access ?

In 1982. the Government formally announced its intention to privatise British Telecom with the sale 51% until selling 100% in 1993.

BT Broadband was not launch until 2000/2001.

I'm replying to your original post what started it or have you forgot , I'm fully aware of the history but the point still stands and why its network is open to competitors , VM being one who's used it.

I think it's perfectly valid, MB, provided it relates to how this may affect what's coming soon to Virgin Media TV.

What happens in terms of Ofcom's pronouncements could well affect us in a number of ways.

Just in time for the Russian Open in golf. I know not everyone's sport, but I like watching it but might need to cut down package. Just realised my discount ends in July.

Re: Coming Soon to Virgin TV (2014) Vol. 2

By 20th July means by race day for the German Grand Prix weekend. It's also a Sunday, and unless I'm mistaken that pretty fairly rules it out as a launch day, although I'm sure there have been Sunday launches. A Thursday launch is more likely, and would allow for the entire race weekend, not just the race day, to be broadcast live. I think now 17th is probable, it's after the World Cup and before the 20th, on a day of the week which is more likely to see channel launches. I think Virgin's press release also included a picture from f1.

Yes this is an area that i think Virgin is really starting to lack in and unlike channels that are locked to Sky this is something they could do something about.

If i were in charge i would be looking at striking deals with US content providers to get some of the shows that do not have a UK home on demand.

Yes, I completely agree, Bananaman. Considering Virgin Media are making such a big play about 'being in control', I am surprised that they are not investing a lot in on demand.

Netflix is good, but we want much more. I want VM to put Sky to shame. As things stand, Sky are catching up fast.
