I do work for Virgin, I'm just specualting like the rest of you, We've been told nothing at all.

Only the channel known as "ESPN" has the rights to show some sports events, which is why ESPN will continue to exist for a time under the ownership of BT until these rights expire.

Whilst the channel known as "ESPN" is in existence, the channel has to be carried on VM under the current arrangements for contractual reasons. Of course, contracts can be renegotiated to take a holistic approach...

When companies sell assets, especially assets that they know a competitor is keen to get their hands on, they do tend to bundle in weaker performing parts of the business.

Examples are that pub management companies will offload poor performing pubs too as a condition of selling a highly desirable outlet to another company.

When NTL wanted SKY 2 on their platform, they had to agree to take Sky Travel and Sky Travel+1.

If the allegations about Sky Atlantic are correct, expect to see other gems such as Pick TV+1 :D

"What happens to recordings I've made from the ESPN channels?"

Anything you’ve recorded from the ESPN HD/America/Classic channels will be there to enjoy until 1 November 2013. After that, they’ll disappear.

Why would recordings disappear for ESPN HD? That to me suggests ESPN HD might not be available on Virgin Media going forward.

Whilst ESPN has to stay for the reasons above, there are no requirements that the channel has to be broadcast in the HD format.

Struggling to find the words 'exclusive to Sky' anywhere on anything related to Sky Atlantic

I can confirm that Sky staff have now been given strict instructions to cease and desist from claiming exclusivity for Sky Atlantic on the Sky platform.

If anybody comes across Sky staff not following this direction from their management, can you please let me know via PM :)

As I said the other day, that memo going round telling On Air Presentation to stop using it. They were also told to stop using the word exclusive on a lot of stuff, including HD & 3D so it might not be anything apart from them wanting to use a different word.

Instead of exclusive, maybe it is "Not on Virgin", to match everything else :D

"some rumours turn out to be true..."

seriously, what is the point of stuff like this? sounds like a bullsh*tter to me whoever this "source" is.

you get exactly the same on football forums. windup merchants hedging their bets. 'Just been told we're signing a really good player if not by this weekend then definitely by next weekend, been told deal done, but i can't say who it is!!!!1' then eventually a player is signed a few weeks later and they say 'that's the player i meant!' and everyone congratulates them on their inside knowledge.

When Sky Atlantic goes to an ad break its displays the following

Sky Atlantic logo with the words 'Only on Sky' below , it then repeats this just before the programme resumes from the ad break , I've seen it literally minutes ago. Maybe they're waiting until it goes live on another platform before dropping it.

Neither, you have to have EE+, so its not basic but its not a paid-for channel.

With sky announcing the release soon of their standalone roku box does this negates the need to negotiate with companies and sell direct to consumers? In essence boycotting the middle person which is virgin in this example.

Re: Coming Soon to Virgin TV (2013) Vol. 3.

Devices such as the Roku Box negate the need for a middleman to an extent, but linear TV channels via a set top box are still the preferred method of watching TV for most people, so there is still a desire to get channels onto the EPG of the various platform providers.

So, to sum up: there are 4 channels testing - the question is what will they be? BT Sport? Sky Atlantic? Some channels that have been coming soon? (MTV Classic, Comedy Central Extra+1, Universal HD, E! HD)

The only problem with those last 4, except for MTV Classic, there is nothing new, its just a simulcast of what we already have, therefore I wouldnt put them up there with the excitement that SA and BT would bring...

The name "Sky" refers to both a broadcaster and a platform, so the term "Only on Sky" is at least open to interpretation, I'd say.

I am pretty much in the same category. I want to believe the rumours and respect all who post here with their information but after the "ITVgate" I am take a skeptical approach now to "leaks" and "insider" andpretty much a doubting Thomas now until we see concrete evidence and accept these post on face value basis (albeit they did arrive)

From what is in the public domain so far as fact is that both BT and Sky are staging a huge campaign targeting virgin subscribers using the bait that BT is (currently) not available; this is true and does lie well with the post from bomber.

We had confirmation virgin will not reduce XL price; they did say they will "monitor" to ensure good value. It could imply new channels in the near future

We also have confirmation from David @ smallworld that he believes it will be an exclusive like sky Atlantic; I respect David posting as a man who tells it like it is and does not withhold information to his users and as per my previous post confirmed before that sky 1 hd, sky Atlantic and skysports 3&4 hd remain exclusives.

So in conclusion I guess I have to wait till 1st for virgin to play their card ( if intending to play at all)

One thing that's not been mentioned about Sky Atlantic is as well as all the current programming we'll be able to see, we will also get all the stuff from On Demand!

Sky Atlantic arriving on VM for me will finally see some sort of balance re-addressed in quality VM have to offer on their platform.

Supporting Richard Coulter's earlier post, Nialli is reporting on his blog that multiple sources have revealed that Sky staff have been told not to promote Sky Atlantic as being exclusive to the Sky platform.

I think that VM are just quietly doing the deals and getting its viewers the best price for the channels available.

Sky Atlantic has been a thorn in our sides, but we will get it soon and then we can catch up with all the material we have missed over the last couple of years.

Rather a delay like that than extortionate rates being charged for the channel.

I can confirm that Sky staff have now been given strict instructions to cease and desist from claiming exclusivity for Sky Atlantic on the Sky platform.

If anybody comes across Sky staff not following this direction from their management, can you please let me know via PM :)

I'd be interested to see the proof to back up all the assertions you make in this post.

Cheers

Could that be the real issue re: existing contract between espn and virgin media irrespective of new owners.

I would guess Probably not because BT mention in their marketing strategy that after 31st July virgin will no longer have access to espn so would disagree with that assumption that vm "has" to carry it

@richardcoulter: may I ask why you personally should be informed of whether sky workers are not following supposed direction from management. Surely that would be up to sky to deal with much as virgin media workers following direction from their management regarding advice they give in retentions

VM have a contract to pay ESPN for their channel until the end of the contract, whilst ESPN have a contract to supply ESPN in return for payment.

The takeover by Liberty doesn't change this legally binding agreement, as long as ESPN still exists as an entity. BT can't close down ESPN because of the requirements of various unexpired sports rights. The ESPN brand WILL eventually disappear.

Of course, both companies are free to supercede the contracts if both parties agree.

With immediate effect, Sky employees have been told not to refer to (or insinuate) that Sky Atlantic is a channel that is exclusive to British Sky Broadcasting Group PLC.

Appropriate action would need to be taken by Sky management regarding any issues of insubordination by anybody working for or on behalf of Sky Television. I am afraid I am unable to expand any further due to commercial & confidentiality issues.

I must preface this by saying I believe BomberAF is correct and that we will see Atlantic and BT Sports coming very soon and in the way he told us it would come too:). However, lets not forget that Sky dropping the "exclusive" could simply mean it will be made available on NOW TV, not VM. It could also be launching on BT as part of the sports deal. These are very unlikely scenarios though and I think in the next couple of weeks many people who have been upset with VM, will be over the moon:)

I hear tomato sauce goes well in a boxer short and hat sandwich;)

Yes his knowledge of TV services is great. His information on Virgin services is weak ( ie Tivo)
Ergo, some one( or even more than one) is winding him up & have a big laugh at him & his disciples.
I would even question if the so called insider is real at all.

I am sorry but if the plebs* were told anything it would also be on Virgins web site & in a press release.

No I get it - Announcement to all staff .Hey guys & girls we are about to sign a new deal with X,Y or Z it will happen in the next 1 to 3 months perhaps. Please do not tell any one.
I can just see any business doing that !! & its the way MB says it happens.

Or perhaps someone is hacking into the CEO pc and looking. Passing on what he/she sees to him.

If that is how you feel, it may be in your interests to participate in other thread/s that meet your needs and/or interest yourself as an alternative to this one :-)

Re: Current channel negotiations. I do concur with your view that any person employed by any party partaking in these alleged negotiations would be foolish to risk disciplinary action (up to and including dismissal) for the sake of disobeying a management instruction not to pass on very commercially sensitive information that may leave either company open to the threat of legal action for damages and/or breach of contract.

This level of security is unprecedented and is highly unusual, so it is quite feasible that Media Boy would be able to obtain a "heads up" regarding channel launches.

I have a number of private messages supporting my view. I read many things believing in them blindly is another matter. I did post that I choose to ignore MB as in general I find his posts are at best, guesses & at worst fantasies.
Also I have no wish to push thru long lists that simply repeat themselves.

I come here mainly when I am bored and in the UK. I read -but do not post when I log on to a remote server.

PS some friends have just been visiting as ( they both are on Sky) & want someone to offer "Whole room Harmony boxes" with advanced TV plus.

I tend to agree except, the Tivo looks better ! but really that`s a reason to to change!

I can't find anywhere that ESPN has to stay in xl because of a pre existing contract between ESPN and Virgin. In fact I was of the understanding that this agreement ended when ESPN's Premier League rights expired. In addition Bt have advertised, and Virgin have had a statement on their website, to the effect that ESPN won't be available on Virgin. So, in light of that, are you able to back up what you say? As far as I can tell, it isn't publicly available information.

neilo 28-07-2013 09:48

Re: Coming Soon to Virgin TV (2013) Vol. 3.

Lots of stuff on here about why ESPN is staying as ESPN. I read it that when they sold everything to BT, part of the deal was that they wanted to keep a channel called ESPN in the UK so that they could keep people familiar with their brand. And that's it. BT picked up their content and agreed to run one channel in their name.

Itshim 28-07-2013 10:01

Re: Coming Soon to Virgin TV (2013) Vol. 3.

Is not ESPN an American brand ( Disney/Hurst) and will continue as such. Just pulling out of a small market ( UK) selling its brand to BT- Virgin comes to mind:D

All the above of course is based on rumour and conjecture. The four streams testing could be anything, the lack of BT Sport could be VM hanging out to get the best deal and as for Sky Atlantic, well who knows.

Having said that, I can't see the Premiership football/rugby or their sponsors accepting a drop in potential viewers of a few million. The pressure will be on BT to do a deal with VM especially with the lack of uptake by BT.

Not sure the premiership football/rugby is bothered.

They auctioned the rights...there wasn't a "must increase viewers clause". Or they would have let BBc or ITV have the rights for less money
