Re: Virgin Media to Double Broadband Speed
Actually I'm not sure if the proper full 100mbps service was ever made available in my area. Soon as 5mbps upload was deployed 50/5 was replaced with 100/5.

"Great news! Your new broadband speed is up and running. It's possible your current modem might be struggling to keep up though. Some of our older modems can't give you the full speed that we've upgraded you to. If that's the case for you, we'll send you a new combined modem and router - the Virgin Media Super Hub. If you've already had a letter from us, click below to get your new Super Hub." Is this the message you get when your area has been upgraded? I got a Super Hub put in 2 weeks ago but my upload speeds on 120mb are still at 5mb. I thought you where supposed to go to 120mb down / 12mb up when your area was upgraded, or does that happen when the full roll-out across the UK has finished? I asked about this in another thread the other day but now I'm confused. Just back in after a tough night at work, and 2 cans of Monster, so my mind is a bit frazzled at the moment :) |
Re: Virgin Media to Double Broadband Speed
Downstream is upgraded first, upstream comes later on.

Re: Virgin Media to Double Broadband Speed
Re. Virgin Media to Double Broadband Speed. Ours was doubled ahead of schedule (at our request) when we had Tivo installed. For a while it was fine, and then it all went wrong. I am assured that the internet woes that we are suffering will be resolved soon.

Re: Virgin Media to Double Broadband Speed
Had my Superhub delivered a couple of days ago, how long did people wait from receiving their hub til their speeds increased?
|
Re: Virgin Media to Double Broadband Speed
as soon as you call in to activate it, the new speed will be sent to the modem, SH
|
Re: Virgin Media to Double Broadband Speed
Never mind, just checked a post i made on the virgin forum a couple of weeks back about my connection problem, only just remembered i posted on there, and turns out they sent me a superhub as a replacement, which was nice of them, also turned out it was Adaware 10 which was giving me internet troubles lol
|
Re: Virgin Media to Double Broadband Speed
I've just been told (no names) that everyones upload speeds will be increased or doubled accordingly by the end of July (next month)
|
Re: Virgin Media to Double Broadband Speed
Not a chance. Ours wasn't even due until at least October so to have everyone's done by two months before that date? Not impossible but highly unlikely.

Re: Virgin Media to Double Broadband Speed
Hey the up to July 2012 schedule includes the 120mb rollout. No reason the upload upgrades on the existing tariffs couldn't be done before 120mb becomes available - in fact the opposite was a prerequisite for the last round of upgrades (upstream improvements *had* to be in place before 100 could be enabled)

Re: Virgin Media to Double Broadband Speed
Double speed kicked in in this area back in April but 100Mb is still on 5Mb upload.. Those expecting upstream increase the same time as downstream are going to be disappointed..
|
Re: Virgin Media to Double Broadband Speed
Are any areas on the doubled U/S yet? Since getting a SH I see my area has 5 D/S now but still only the one up - as the channel never ever changes I think there is only one regardless of no bonding.

I suspect down to cost, your village probably has the room for the extra channels to simply be turned on whilst my city probably would need some expensive work doing to add extra cards etc. |
Re: Virgin Media to Double Broadband Speed
A big city will have many optical nodes each with their own channel set.

|
Re: Virgin Media to Double Broadband Speed
Well neither of us can prove anything.
All I know is I look at graphs from people in villages and such always better. My area has many houses converted to flats/bedsits I expect like many inner city areas, and innier cities I expect also part of earlier cable rollouts when the initial rollouts went for more houses per cabinet. Of course also that most student areas will reside in city areas, I also have figures for my service group and figures for kirby muxloe (a lower populated village type area) and they speak for themselves, not only does that area have about 30% of the customer numbers it also has more channel capacity. This is all of what I base my opinion off. |
Re: Virgin Media to Double Broadband Speed
I am in Swindon, shows as July for upgrade, just called CS to find out when and was told that all speed doubling work has been put on hold until after the olympics. I asked if that was all areas or just Swindon and the agent confirmed all areas. Is this really true?

They were both an Arris Touchstone. I can't remember the model. One may have been a CM900. I have sent both to recycling. Either way, they came pre-configured. Edit .................................................. .................................................. .................................................. ............................................... I just checked old Trial Forum messages. Ashford used an Arris-WBM760 and CM900S. Apparently they had wanted a combined modem router for the trial, but went for stand-alone modems when they changed supplier. No idea who the old supplier was. |
Re: Virgin Media to Double Broadband Speed
So it wasn't 370x24 on a single cable connection it was two different connections presumably using different channel groups and the bonding at TCP/IP level?

Tests conducted on speedtest.net were of no use. Servers did not have the capacity to measure over 200Mb consistently. You have to remember that this was a 'proof of concept' trial, establishing that speeds of 200Mb and then approaching 400Mb, in my case, was possible on domestic connections using ordinary user kit. Needless to say those of us with Gb switches and cards, decent processors and routers with high throughput had the best results. |

Re: Virgin Media to Double Broadband Speed
Yeah, the problem is sometimes they're bang on and sometimes they're way off, making it entirely unreliable and not comparable between servers (e.g. one server will show a ping 40ms higher than the real value, another might show one 5ms lower than the real value)

It does seem a huge change for most people - advised we would have double speeds by July, and then put it back anything between 6-12 months. |

Re: Virgin Media to Double Broadband Speed
When I read that the doubling in my area had been put back "from July onwards" to "December to March 2013", I put "Plan B" into operation.
On Saturday, I changed from my previous package BB 30Mb 1TB TiVo XL TV XL Phone with anytime calls and 08 to Premiere Collection BB 60 Mb 1TB TiVo & V HD XL TV L phone with weekend calls (as we hardly ever use the landline, only for incoming calls) with a reduction of just over £11 per month (no additional discounts, paying the normal £58.90 per month). https://www.cableforum.co.uk/images/...2012/07/22.png Result..... |
Re: Virgin Media to Double Broadband Speed
I checked mine last night on the web page. I'm on 50Mb and my speed upgrade has now been put back 1 year :-0
So...I looked on the main page and according to the post code checker I can get 100Mb NOW....so how does that work then? |
Re: Virgin Media to Double Broadband Speed
because you are talking about two separate things. They added extra hardware last year as part of the 100mbit rollout to make 100mbit speeds possible and achievable by area so you could actually sign up for 100mbit.
Free speed doubling is something completely different and they are having to add extra channels and bond them so the capacity is on the network for when they bang however many thousands of customers from 50mbit to 100mbit. It is like me making a motorway substantially longer so you can drive 200mph, but now I need to add an extra 3 lanes so there is enough room for all the people who want to drive at 200mph. |
Re: Virgin Media to Double Broadband Speed
I'm one year away too, not overly fussed, it's more the upload speed I wanted so makes no odds to me
|
Re: Virgin Media to Double Broadband Speed
I think spanky's point is that he's paying for 50meg, 100meg is "available" for the same price in his area. I guess he could just phone up and see if it really is available.

Re: Virgin Media to Double Broadband Speed

Start with TCPOptimizer: - http://www.speedguide.net/downloads.php/ Install the latest version. If you are using Windows 7 run it in administrator mode. Go for optimal settings. Set speed at 100Mb+. The programme will ask you to reboot. Thenry was probably also alluding to making sure your system is running smoothly without clutter, corruptions and malware. You can sort some of this out with Windows tools but could do with acquiring purpose built tools. eg. Diskeeper, Tuneup Utilities, Microsoft Security Essentials and Malwarebytes. Folk here will argue about what utility suites to go for. Some are free. Some will cost about £20.00. Of course you may find that your processor isn't up to it, even after you have tuned your system. Speed tests use up a lot of processor time. If that is the case, don't worry unless you really want too upgrade your processor. You are getting 60Mb anyway. Don't rely on tests alone. |

Infinity is here & has been for around a year. Virgin & catch up strike again ! |
Re: Virgin Media to Double Broadband Speed
Just called up customer services - they just doubled me from 30mbit to 60mbit with a 3 minute phone call.
I've been contract free for past 6 months so they probably wanted to sweeten the off contract deal. |
Re: Virgin Media to Double Broadband Speed
Well done chamelion, I must try that, as we haven't signed anything either;)
roughbeast, many thanks for your post, much appreciated. I run Vista on this lap-top and Windows 7 on our desk top, which we use for all our D/Loading as it gives us the full D/Load speed. |
Re: Virgin Media to Double Broadband Speed
Went online to check my predicted date and all I got was a square box with a red cross in the corner!
Phoned 150 to ask when my July upgrade was happening to be told it was slightly delayed; hang on says the guy, let me check your area, comes back with an offer to upgrade my b/b to 30M for an extra 50p per month as long as I contract for 12 months. So, self install Superhub arrives Monday, shipping charge waived - bargain! 😃 |
