Do you use it? I would have thought that Tivo with more channels and three tuners would be more than adequate. Now a Freesat recorder would be different...

Does come in handy and is useful as a back up.

Plus also sd pictures are superb on some channels till tivos are fixed.

Yes - for BBC red button (Wimbledon etc) and those occasions when Tivo has taken it into its head to record a 'suggestion' at the same time as the other 2 tuners are recording.

Virgin Media test out new Channel.

As of 02.30 an new SD Channel has appeared on my V+ box on Virgin Channel 890. The new channel is called ''Test 43'' and also is broadcasting On Demand Previews plus EPG info is showing the same info as Virgin Channel 100.

Virgin test channels out some times to see if it will work fine ahead of launching an new channel.

I have not seen any launch dates for any new channels - I will post here when/if I get more info.

Perhaps they don't need to test it, but want to let people know that something is on it's way, knowing that customers are getting impatient for new additions, yet can't (or don't want) to say what it is going to be.

I asked a VM manager that I know, what it is it going to be. He said "you'll have to wait and see". I took this to mean that it was not simply a network stability test and that something was going to launch, but I could be wrong!

What genre is 890 in?

Does anybody know of any 3D related content coming to VM, either rumoured or confirmed? I believe Discovery 3D will be a full time channel but apart from that.. Nothing.
Bought a 3D TV about 3 months ago and I can count on 1 hand the amount of times I've watched things in 3D. Would be nice to get something to watch..

Don't forget that on satellite Sky aren't responsible for uplinking the channel, they just have to allocate an EPG slot and the channel provider does the rest (in essence; I'm sure it's a little more involved than that), whereas there's a lot more for a company like VM or the other cablecos to do in order to add a channel, hence the negotiations as there are more costs involved for a cableco so they have to get a good price.

Are you saying that if VM were to say they would never add any more new channels you would be willing to accept that?,surely the more people air their displeasure on forums such as this the more VM must listen to them and hopefully act on the results.

I don't claim to know the process well but the hard part is getting the channel on the air, once they are on a satellite there is very little for Virgin to do other then agree a price. Their uplink will come from the same place as sky.

All their channels either come from a Satellite feed or DTT.

Yep that's correct , proven recently when Sky had an issue with a transponder effecting ESPN America, the channel was down also on cable.

And who puts them on VM's network? Just because a channel has been uplinked to a satellite doesn't mean it's available on cable. VM's feeds may well come from a satellite feed but VM have to receive that feed, demultiplex it and then add it to one of their own multiplexes. That's quite a lot more than just agreeing a price.

Sky Movies Classics HD and 4 UKTV HD channels is coming to Virgin Media in October Confirmed.
Quote:

I'm pleased that you've noted the significant effort and investment we've made in HD channels recently. We are going to be launching a number of HD channels in October. This includes four channels from UKTV which we will be announcing shortly. We will also be launching Sky Movies Classic HD in October. That will mean that we will have 36 HD channels of which over 19 are included for free as part of our TV packs,

We are in discussion with the owners of the other channels you list as well as a number of additional providers so we hope to be able to bring more HD channels in the future.

Well spotted. "other purposes" seems to suggest red button or interactive to me. You'd think that if it was "another channel" (as opposed to Sky Movies Classics HD), he would have said that.

"We are going to be launching a number of HD channels in October. This includes four channels from UKTV which we will be announcing shortly. We will also be launching Sky Movies Classic HD in October. That will mean that we will have 36 HD channels of which over 19 are included for free as part of our TV packs".

How many premium and non premium channels are there atm? I've counted 19 non premium and 1 premium (ESPN) available on XL, 2 premium sports and 11 premium movies. Add on the 5 known to be coming in October and that leaves 38. Have I got that right, it doesn't seem to add up!

Re: Coming Soon to Virgin TV (2011) Vol. III.

4 UKTV HD channels are coming in october Alibi HD will come in 2012.
ESPN HD is counted in the currently 19 HD channels at no extra cost
Then add 2 premium Sports channels and then premium movies which will be 11 and then 4 uktv HD channels total is 36 HD channels.
It will mean 23 HD channels at no extra cost.

@virginmedia Can it be 2 channels that are testing in 1 stream. Is it Sky Atlantic SD and Sky Atlantic HD that are testing

All their channels either come from a Satellite feed or DTT.

The BBC HD channels are direct via fibre from the BBC.

Is it possible i could be 2 channels that are testing in 1 stream a SD channel and a HD channel or is it a sky sports red button stream ?
I think Sky Movies Classics HD will launch on channel 441
Sky Sports News HD and Sky News HD can not be far away then

Whilst it is good news to finally see some new hd channels,Clearly we have got these due to vm selling there stake in uktv.So the discussions still continue on the channels we all want,Clearly not cheap enough yet!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Well like you all we hear at the moment is speculation but speculation does not deliver you more channels but pestering them and keeping on to them might if enough people do it.

Sky News HD and Sky Sports News HD has been exclusive to sky for over a year

But you are trying to put 2+ 2 together and make 5 if you think that is proof.

The other channels on the list were

Sky Sports HD3, HD4, Sky Sports News HD, ITV 2 HD, ITV 3 HD, ITV 4 HD, History HD, Sky News HD and the Disney/Nick HD channels for the kids.

its been a while since ive been on and my first post in ages. I think when it comes to VM we can never rule anything out and we just need to wait and see what they deliver. We can speculate as much as we want but no point in getting our hopes up for them to be dashed. the test stream may be nothing exciting and just some VM work but it could be everything we want. We just need to wait and see

Untill Virgin Media release an Offical press release I would remain cautious, we've been here before where channels have been going to launch and they never did.

Me too, apparently VM are in talks with everyone and despite the absence of press releases, we're getting or should be getting everything.

Amazing they've got the time to do that given the constant bombardment of emails and tweets their getting regarding channel launches.

I have feeling Alibi HD will launch in Q1 2012 because that is when Castle returns on Alibi

this high profile deal brings series four of Castle to the UK for the first time. The series will form an integral part of Alibi’s Q1 schedule in 2012 and will follow on from the success of the previous three series.
