Re: Coming Soon to Virgin TV (2010)

Like it or not, football is the dominant sport in the UK. ESPN shows a lot of it because it's popular and available. They're adding Guinness Premiership rugby starting with the 2010/11 season, but aside from that there's no rugby available to them. The only cricket that was available to them was the IPL, but they quite rightly passed on that. All major tennis and golf tournaments are spoken for as well.

Yes, some smaller motor sport events are available, but ESPN are after the big motor sport events, which are currently spoken for. You may enjoy some of the smaller motor sport events, but a subscription based channel like ESPN will never find those events to be a viable option, which is why Eurosport, which even as a FTA channel pulls in fairly low ratings, snaps up these events.

Everything happens for a good reason, even if it isn't obvious. Lots of network changes are happening at the moment (see this thread!) and sometimes STB reboots are needed at the same time. The reboots are done in the dead of night to impact the fewest people.

I know the interruptions are a pain but you'll benefit from improved services in the long run.

Roll on the College American Football season in September. Lets hope we have ESPNA HD by then.;)

I would love to see ESPNA HD this would be the icing on the cake for me. Sky One HD , Animal Planet HD and Five HD when it launches. Does anyone know why Disney seem slow out the blocks with an HD Channel , I know they have Disney Cinemagic HD but i would have thought shows like Hannah Montana and all the other kids favourites were being shot in HD now.

Five HD - Update

I thought I would email the Head of Press @ Five to ask if Five HD was a Sky exclusive or if it would become available on other platforms. (excl Freeview)

Reply - It’s our hope to make Five HD available on as many platforms as possible.

Hopefully Five HD will be on VM

Some broadcaster are open and honest and alot of the time this sort of information is free on there websites, press releases and in some cases there Qtr reports - alot have future plans etc.

Like I know from reading both ESPN & Discovery results/plans both are spending alot of money HD content (HD channel and on demand)

ESPN are looking into ESPN America HD and also ESPN2 (Not HD yet for 2 but it seems they might use ESPN HD for both ESPN and ESPN2)

Discovery are looking into releasing Animal Planet HD - its already in the US so its down to Discovery Euorpe to release also Discovery have huge amount of on demand HD content but again its currently US only.
The likes of

TLC HD
Science HD
Planet Green HD
Animal Planet HD
HD Theater - (This is shown in 1080i and 5.1 digital surround)

US HD content is huge - yes they have more channels (most show rubbish) but there HD content on the good channels is second to non.

Us in the UK are way behind the HD curve even SKY.

Five had first offer on the 4th Freeview HD channel - Ofcom have now given this option back to the BBC (visit ofcom website it has all reason why etc)- which now means we could see BBC News HD or BB2 HD but it seems BBC News HD is more likely.

There is a 5th HD channel up for grabs but I think that’s expected around 2013

The whole thing seems to be one big merry go round - All free to air channels have to apply to Ofcom for HD channel or any extra channel and allow the others to agree or disagree - Its called fair trading.

Thats the basics and I'm sure there is more behind it but don’t want to start another debate on how rubbish Ofcom really is for us consumers

This is on Ofcom's website about BBC/ITV showing world cup - they have to request to show the world cup - but its also open to the rest of the free to view channels.

So even if BBC/ITV say they have it, its not yet approved.

Ofcom has received requests from ITV and the BBC for consent to broadcast live coverage of the World Cup Football Championship 2010.

This is a Group A Listed Event which means that the rights to broadcast live coverage must have been offered to both categories of broadcasters specified in the Broadcasting Act 1996: those providing services which are free to air with national or near national coverage (currently BBC One, BBC Two, ITV1, Channel 4 and Five) and those providing all other television services. The rules which apply are set out in the Code on Sports and Other Listed and Designated Events.

ITV and the BBC will be sharing coverage of the World Cup. All of the matches will be shown on BBC One, BBC Two or ITV1 except for eight in the earlier stages of the tournament which clash with other matches and which will therefore be shown on BBC Three, the interactive streams of BBC One, or ITV2, 3 or 4.

Don't forget though that one of the things in favour of HD in the US is widescreen, which we already have on our SD broadcasts.

Q: HOW DO I KNOW IF MY AREA HAS JOIN NGTV?
A: Ex-ntl will find BBC Radio 4 LW on Virgin Channel 911 and Ex-Telewest will find BBC Radio Wales on Channel 931.

The full list of channels coming to your area after you have join NGTV is listed in post one.

there is no need to check the channels to check of you have been moved to NGTV you should be able to tell just by looking at the program information. there is loads more information like actors/presenters list, date program was made and also a more detailed discription of the program itself.

It seems either something big is going on or VM have done most of there business before 1st April.

I'm trying to squeeze as much info out of various people and all has gone VERY quite.

Nothing new/shiny and in HD to report.

Media Boy - Do you have anything?

Just seen this :

Also at the Ideal Home Show, Virgin Media intends to run further public demonstrations of a range of 3D TV content using Sony BRAVIA 3D-ready HX903 television sets.

The operator will also give customers a taste of its next-generation set top boxes built under a collaboration deal with America DVR giant TiVo, with the products due to launch later in the year.

I have not been told anything about Headends for weeks now - you best go to that NGTV page for all the latest news.

Acton is a hubsite fed from the Lewisham headend.

Just so everyone is aware:

http://www.virginmedia.com/myvirginm...d-channels.php

Quote:

When will I get the new channels?

We’ll be launching Discovery HD, Eurosport HD, E4 HD and SyFy HD on 1st April. Not everyone will get access to these new channels straight away as we are carrying out some technical upgrades to our platform and there’ll be a few areas where we’ll be staggering the rollout. But don’t worry – we’ll be rolling them out as quickly as we can, and we should be all done by the beginning of June.

On Friday 2nd April we’ll also be launching ITV1 HD, which will be available in all ITV areas (this does not include Scotland and Northern Ireland). ITV1 HD will not be available in Scotland or Northern Ireland because it’s an ITV1 service, not an STV or UTV service. ITV is awaiting confirmation of STV and UTV’s plans with regards to the provision of HD services in the STV and UTV regions

if so its another way VM screw people over by not allowing all customers access to all the channels they are entitled to. its a little annoying that VM do this as this staggard launch crap would not happen with Sky or BT.

Question for Media Boy mainly unless anyone else can also answer it. I have noticed you put a list on here about what changes to look out for when your area has switched to NGTV. Ive seen what to look out for if you are in a extelewest or exntl area. But what about if you are in the excable&wireless headend area of Bromley what should we look out for regarding the NGTV switch over.

You'll be classed as exNTL (before VM)

Yes, looks that way gadge... but everyone will get ITV1 HD as you say.

I suppose there is no point in upgrading a headend that is going to be switched off in a few weeks time.. it would be a waste of money.

Ok thanks i guessed as much. But it can get a bit confusing when you see the three main headends mentioned , with exntl , extelewest and excable&wireless written next to them.

Does anyone have any idea when Norwich will go NGTV.
