They have to be the correct format and you need to add them through iTunes.

AAC - Apple's implementation of MP4, I think.

---------- Post added at 12:22 ---------- Previous post was at 12:20 ----------

Edit - not owned or developed by Apple at all, as it turns out. Has been an ISO standard since 1997, but was implemented in iTunes and iPod fairly early on, though not right at the outset, as all my very oldest CD rips are in 128k MP3, which was the default in very early versions of iTunes.

I've read the guide how to do it, and downloaded the 'restoreOS5.psw' which is 668MB. but not sure whether the phone has to already have IOS5 on it, or it does it with the downloaded one I have.

Remember you currently can only jailbreak IOS5 as Tethered, use snow breeze, don't update first, you need to download IOS5 and then get snowbreeze to make a jailbroken copy, if you already have a jailbroken phone then you must know this, personally i would wait until they release the untethered version

In Itunes you need to select an mp3 and right click then click info, once in there go to the end tab or second from end and you can select the start and finish time, this needs to be 30 seconds or less, once you have done this click ok and then you need to right click the same mp3 in itunes and click on convert to AAC, this will create a file of the section you have stated in the info. You then need to right click on the newly created files in itunes and go to the folder it is located in, once here you need to rename the file type to m4r, once this is complete, delete the 30 second file from within itunes and go back to info on the original mp3 and remove the start and finish times.
now go back to your newly created m4r file and double click it which will add it to itunes, plug you iphone in and select it then go along to the ringtone tab and click sync selected ringtones, select this and sync it and it's on your phone.

Mine's untethered because it had the old boot loader 3.5.2 as opposed to the 3.5.2.3 etc that were the fixed ones by Apple.

I used itunes to install the new firmware that I downloaded. ran the rest through sn0wbreeze. it patched the firmware ok, but I was getting error 1061 all the time.

so I used iREB to put it properly into DFU mode and it worked straight away with itunes and installed the patched firmware.

had to install installous through Cydia, and then all was done.

don't know whether to keep it, or put it on ebay for mega money.
you don't often see an untethered IOS5 3GS with tomtom on it, do ya?! :)

I'm too smart and dangerous :D

I thought the camera worked from the lock screen now? I can't see it.

Have you made an AAC file and made sure its shorter than 30 Seconds? It also needs to be in the ringtones folder on iTunes.

If you still can't work out how to do it. Go to this site and you should be able to find most things to download or the site can help you make your own.

or failing that googling iPhone ringtones gives plenty of results ;)

The most common error during the launch of iOS5 was related to Apple's servers being hammered. Have you tried since then?

If you already have iOS5 downloaded...

Just try "Update" within iTunes. It shouldn't be a problem now.

If it is a problem, or it tries to spend ages performing a backup, then instead of clicking on Update, shift-click on Restore and browse to the firmware location (e.g. on Windows, it's "C:\Users\<name>\AppData\Roaming\Apple Computer\iTunes\<iDevice Name> Software Updates\*.ipsw"

Re: The iPhone thread

iPhone battery life is notoriously poop. Much like most smartphones to be honest. I would suggest switching off WiFi, 3G and Bluetooth when not needed, along with turning down the brightness of the screen and disabling automatic syncing (with gmail or whatever). All of these measures will improve battery life.

The batteries do need some complete discharges and full charges 2/3times when they are new to calibrate them correctly.

The iPhone 4+4s are supposed to have better battery life than that though, unless you are using it as an iPod alot?

I prefer the modern conversation list used by most smart phones now. Makes it easier to follow. My GS2 has a messaging app and have a theme to make it look like the iPhone bubbles as they are cool.

AndyCambs 23-10-2011 20:56

Re: The iPhone thread

Article in the Mail on Sunday magazine today points out that Siri only works 80-85% of the time, which means it might as well not work. Says the benefits of the 4S are lost and you might as well stick with the 4 and iOS5 upgrade and get the bits that work.

I also noticed that 1 in 5 Blackberry users were reported to be considering changing from Blackberry to iPhone after the RIM problems earlier this month. I do have to admit, Apple must have been astounded at their luck to have that happen when they introduce their own messaging service to rival Blackberry.

Although I like Messages app and the way it presents messages of all types, I sometimes wish you could turn the conversation view off..

It makes sense if you do regularly have text conversations, but if most of your texts are reminders to (for example) get the milk, there isn't a lot of sense in presenting them as a conversation.

Whats wrong with the baloons where you see the message as a proper conversation.
No point switching folders to inbox, sent box, etc.

Siri is an Iphone 4s only feature at the moment. Apparently the software WILL run on an Iphone 4 BUT the crafty beggers at Apple have made part of Siri cloud based meaning if you attempt to connect with an Iphone 4 it won't. Yay.

Apparently the Jailbreaking monkeys are working on it ;)

Re: The iPhone thread

It's surely just a marketing thing, just an incentive for people to go for the 4S.

If Siri uses "cloud processing" and needs an active data connection, then why not let the 4 have it?

If Siri *does* need the power of the A5, then why not let the iPad 2 have it? (given that the iPad 2 also has the A5... but at a higher clock speed than the 4S)

techguyone 24-10-2011 21:36

Re: The iPhone thread

Iphone 4 has a 1,420 maH battery
4s has a 1,432 one

Neither are terribly big, although the thing only has a smallish 3.5 inch screen to drive

WiFi usage at home is much preferred over 3G as it will use a lot less power (if you are using WiFi why not turn off 3G at that point)

Simply because the transmitting power of WiFi is usually smaller than that of a 3G radio since the access point is much closer and the signal will be much stronger than the usual 3G tower. They tend to be less dense than 2G towers and the phone will need to transmit with more power in order to keep reasonable signal strength with 3G.

I've just checked the Three website. "Text 500" has 5000 SMS and 500 minutes. Unfortunately it just has 1GB of data (I asked which tariff you had as Three has some tariffs with truly unlimited data - "All you can eat" data - on e.g. The One Plan). I don't quite understand it though as "Text 500" doesn't appear to be a tariff available for the iPhone 4S. Is it the tariff you used to have previously, and are you sure you're still on it now?

As for an app or something to show data usage... I use the O2 app to see how much data I have used. I don't know if Three has a similar app. You can also check by going to Settings > General > Usage > Mobile Usage, which will show usage since you last Reset the stats.

Any app which uses data will use your mobile data when you are not connected to WiFi.

The iPlayer app is only for the iPad.

You can still use iPlayer on the iPhone, but you have to use the web browser: http://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer

You can also stream Freeview TV channels over WiFi via the browser (http://iphone.tvcatchup.com/) or an app (FilmOn TV).

http://www.digitalspy.co.uk/tech/new...criticism.html

Apple's new iPhone 4S handset has been dogged with criticism since its launch last month, with some owners complaining about the handset rapidly draining its battery life.

Some iPhone 4S users have reported that their phone battery loses up to 15% of its capacity every hour, even when not in heavy use.

Other issues have been reported with older iPhone models after the user had installed the latest iOS 5 operating system, which also caused various other problems when it rolled out last month.

Apple's new iPhone 4S handset has been dogged with criticism since its launch last month, with some owners complaining about the handset rapidly draining its battery life.

Some iPhone 4S users have reported that their phone battery lYoses up to 15% of its capacity every hour, even when not in heavy use.

Other issues have been reported with older iPhone models after the user had installed the latest iOS 5 operating system, which also caused various other problems when it rolled out last month.

my battery goes down all the time have 2 charge it everyday. Finish charging it last night around 11. Just gone to text my m8 and got about a quarter of battery left

If they are onboard maps - no - since the app will only use the local data file.

If it's streaming maps (Google Maps, Bing etc) then yes is will come out of your data tarrif.

If you are on wireless (wi-fi wireless that is) - depends if it's your own or a wi-fi hotspot.

Unless you look at something beforehand on WiFi and leave it, yes it will use data because your loading new data.

Is there any maps out there that u can get on the iPhone that don't use any of your data which is free

Halcyon 05-11-2011 18:36

Re: The iPhone thread

I doubt it as you would have to have a massive app that had all the roads and map data.
As far as I know all of them need to load additional data as and when you need it.

I used to use NavFree http://itunes.apple.com/gb/app/navfr...391334793?mt=8

Also, Nokia have designed a web based version of their Nokia Maps program that apparently offers downloadable maps. Just go to http://m.maps.ovi.com/ on Safari on your phone.

I inherited an original iPhone 4 instead :)

Cool. iOS 5 runs nicely on my 4. Even played around with Voiceover, and it seems good.

I like the new voice in ios 5, the web rotor gets on my tilt though, but at least I can use my iPad and get loads of battery life when I turn the screen curtain off :)

I also ordered a bumper from eBay as I did read there are signal problems if I hold it the wrong way.

There are. There are two Antennas, seperated by a small black plastic seperator in the bottom left of the phone (as you look at the display). Touch both at the same time, and your signal strength will drop rapidly.

Never affected me though. The first thing I did when I got my iPhone was get a case. Actually not for that reason. Basically whenever I get a phone, I get a case because if you damage a case, you can buy one relatively cheaply. If you damage the phone's screen (as I have done with a couple of phones), they aren't so cheap.

Wow this is clever (by the same people who make my screen reader)

Just need to find a. Alternative to Siri (possibly vlingo) and I'm set

Re: The iPhone thread

So I'm setting it up and GRR it's getting on my tit.

I have had a complete nightmare getting the apn settings on it.

Can't get MMS settings in and for some reason the iCloud push won't push the email to it.

For some reason there are no longer any options to manually set the apn or MMS settings.

Will it stop Safari crashing as well? It's taken a definite turn for the worse since iOS5.

Safari hasn't crashed on me this morning (yet ;)) - it does add the gesture to switch apps thingy on ipad one though.

Did you get the update notification badge attached to the Settings app, or did you have to go into the app and actually look at Software Update?

dilli-theclaw 11-11-2011 18:57

Re: The iPhone thread

To be honest I didn't notice - I saw it was about on google and then manually checked too see if I could download it.

I updated via iTunes, but I did have the badge on Settings. I just felt safer updating the phone while it was plugged in, plus I like to have a copy of the full firmware file available (OTA updates just download a "delta" update).
