We all had a good laugh up here the other day - the last 3 miles to our house is passable by 4x4s only just now, but even then you have to be properly equipped and know what you're doing. Unlike the Porsche Cayenne that was having some considerable difficulty on the hill near our house, thanks to its stupid low-profile, wide, slick city tyres and the urbanite behind the wheel.

The best solution I've found is a Suzuki Jimny. Small, very agile, and truly go-anywhere. In fact, the worse the road, the more fun it is to drive. I've been happily cruising through the snow with the low-ratio box engaged for a couple of days now. It makes mincemeat of even the steepest, slipperiest hills - both up and down.

We used to have a small little Suzuki SJ410 (though it did have jacked up suspension, oversized BFG-MT's and a 2L diesel fitted)... As you say great for going up/down icy roads

Re: Snow !

Grimsby's probably had 2 inches of snow this evening (and it's still falling slowly) - absolute chaos... Several of the main roads were at a standstill, and there was yet another accident on the A180 out of town.

To put it in context, Hull has, up until today, had by far the worst weather in 'Humberside', but I had no problems getting there for a gig yesterday, and even less coming back today. Good old Grimbleberry never ceases to amaze me :D

Had about a foot of snow here today, took me an hour to get home (16 miles) took my wife 2hrs to go 11 miles. Had to park quite a way from the house so if possible we can get the cars out easier tomorrow for work but its unlikely.
Couple of pics of the garden.

Left the house at 5:15 this morning, to be confronted by 8 inches of snow on top of the car, and more than that on the main roads...

Managed to drive (slowly!) to work, to find that, not only am I the only Technical Manager in (out of 6), I appear one of two of the most senior managers in, which is a nuisance :D . Even more so, when only 4 of my 10 staff have rolled in...

Not sure a LR/RR would assist in ice... 4 wheel drive would just slip too without some spiked tyres :)

It started snowing on and off at about 7 last night. This morning my OH managed to drive most of the way back from his nightshift but had decided to park in the main road in the hopes he can get to work tonight as it seems to be a case of you drive on minor roads at your own risk.

I think I'll reschedule the appointment I had this morning.

Re: Snow !

Same here, roads are completely ice covered in the streets, road at the end is not gritted either and we have metal bollards and speed tables to navigate before we leave our street. Start of this year someone tried it and ripped the front bumper off their car, yesterday there was debris there again so looks like someone has damaged their car again this time.

Just tried for more than 30 minutes to get my car out of our cul de sac onto the main road - including Mrs Gaz doing sterling work with a shovel - to no avail.

In fact I barely managed to get it back into our driveway & nearly ended up with it stuck in the middle of the road!

Paul K 02-12-2010 09:14

Re: Snow !

We have the same problem here, we all have to kerb park as it's a narrow one way street, unfortunately this mean everyone starts off trying to move their cars off an icy kerb onto an icy road surface with very little space between the cars in front and parked on the other side of the road. Add the speed cushions on the road and then the speed tables each end surrounded by solid metal bollards and our street is a disaster waiting to happen.
Start of the year someone lost their front bumper and one front wing to the bollards.... not gonna risk it until their is less ice on the tables. Busses till then but unfortunately the footpaths are completely iced over, don't get any grit, have little foot traffic at the moment to break up the surface and are a complete death trap.

Re: Snow !

We've had no new snowfall worth speaking of since we were treated to about 18" of it on Sunday. But since then it has been very, very cold, and as those vehicles that can move on our road have done so, they have created something of an ice pan. Access is actually getting more and more difficult now. Going down some of the hills round here (1st gear, low ratio engaged) is hairy to say the least ... I slid part way down a couple of them on the school run this morning. But then, coming back up them with the engine screaming and the car skidding about is lots of fun. :D

It's supposed to drop well below zero around the London area tonight, what is on the ground at that point will be ice in the morning. It's already iced up badly so tomorrow will be a nightmare if it happens as we are still expected to get into work as long as it's "safe" to do so.
You would think that living near the capital would actually mean proper gritting and planning but hey.....

problem is though the salt doesn't work under -6-7 and it needs a regular traffic flow for the salt to be effective .If as you say that the roads have already iced up then the salt will not be anywhere as effective

Very true. We got our first gritter visit this afternoon - it has changed the outlook on our road from 'death trap' to 'risk of injury' IMO. Still very much 4x4s only.

What do countries where it gets significantly colder that -6/-7 use on their roads?

Germany doesn't use salt - they just clear the roads and/or use winter tyres.
Quote:

The Law Regarding Snow Tires
In November 2010, responding to the court’s decision, the Bundestag, Germany’s parliament, passed a new federal law that is much more specific about winter tires. It also doubles the fines for drivers caught without snow tires or who have an accident in winter conditions without snow tires on their vehicle.

Von O bis O
Most German motorists have long known the old rule of thumb for putting snow tires on the car: “von O bis O.” The term “from O to O” is short for “from October to Easter” (von Oktober bis Ostern). It is a recommendation that one should make the change from regular tires to snow tires in October, and leave them on until Easter.

The problem is other countries get this weather all the time and so can prepare for it. For us this is once every few years are sometimes 10 years hence we aren't always equiped to cope with it

That was an interesting read, maybe it should be passed here in the UK although our weather is not normally as severe as it has been, it could be a regional law where it wouldn't be needed in say Cornwall but in the north mandatory.

When I were a young man living in Essex (Thurrock for my sins)
Feb 1987 was the worse snowfall I have ever encountered, well that & the A12 in 1982.

It does happen, you just need to be in the right part :)

Re: Snow !

the problem with snow tyres is that they have hardened grooves which will damage the road surface so councils aren't really happy with them. Saying that in holland where the climate is same as here normally you need to have winter tyres as well

WHY, why does London come to a grinding halt when bad weather hits, each year we have the Highways agency, alway comes out with some old crap, and yet we get stuck with Airports closed, trains not running, shops running out of grub, and yet other countries that have this all the time, it doesn't effect them, are we losing our marbles or is the whole depart that runs our roads etc gone stupid and thick.

If only you were in charge, Arthur, all would be right in the world.......

Other countries have this every year, which is why they are prepared for it - we only have it occasionally.

A question - do you have winter tyres or snow chains for your car? If not, you are just as guilty as those you castigate for lack of preparation.

It's only a bit of snow - get over it......

(it won't be long before you blame Maggie for the snow* ;))

I thought putting chains on your tyres is illegal on UK roads due to the damage they would cause?

Winter tyres are a different matter but who can seriously afford a set of tyres sitting waiting for the snow? I guess if you are at high risk of isolation then it may be worth it.

I remember being impressed when I first went to Norway, the night I arrived they had significant snowfall - the driver who picked me up in the morning apologised that there would be a delay while he got studded tyres fitted.

The snow ploughs on the main roads left a significant compacted layer of snow/ice behind so that studded tyres would work without ripping up the tarmac.

We were able to travel at about 50mph with no problems using the studded tyres.

- this wouldn't be practical in the uk - people expect roads to be cleared down to the tarmac & then salted/gritted for their tyres to work.

Even using 'winter' tyres could be a problem - the compound & tread depth/pattern means that these tyres will either wear out very quickly, or possibly damage the road, depending on conditions.

- people won't invest the money to have access to all the solutions possibly required for an occasional snow shower - hence the chaos when we get one.

The only thing I have thought about is whether to try some snow 'socks' for my car - they may have got me through the foot deep snow in my cul de sac, this morning - as it is I'm hoping the couple of hours with a shovel will have been worth it ;)

Even though we don't get snow that regularly, we do get ice most winters..

The snow ploughs on the main roads left a significant compacted layer of snow/ice behind so that studded tyres would work without ripping up the tarmac.

We were able to travel at about 50mph with no problems using the studded tyres.

Funnily enough, IIRC, when we had our own shop, my dad had snow chains for his car. Why? He needed to get to work at 3:30am (the shop had to maintain the same hours as the New Covent Garden Market in which it was situated) and if he got stuck in the snow, it would not have been easy to get either to work or home.

He had his faults, but he was able to get to work most mornings.

Because you peed off a whole generation of parents by telling them it wasn't the State's job to give their kids a drink of milk. ;)

Not me.I'd have never done that.I was one of those kids that got free milk and everyone else's who didn't want theirs so it's not something I would have put paid to..and school dinners were mostly fine when I were a kid too.

The puddings were so fab..So I wouldn't have destroyed the system that provided them in favour of Turkey Twizzlers either.Never got that muck when I had school dinners.Got Spam and baked bean pie instead.

Anyway back on topic it seems to be still trying to snow.

Well, no snow at home today. Still absolutely freezing. At home, the buses appear pretty much back to normal. Still diverted around one particularly steep hill, which the council apparently haven't gritted (odd that they haven't really, it has a huge private old-people's home on it).

Still massive problems with the trains though. Apparently two trees fell on the line, which required that they shut the line. Fair enough. This was on Tuesday afternoon. The line is still shut, with no apparent opening day shown on the SouthEastern website.

Bright and sunny here in Lincoln this morning. The wind appears to have shifted around to South-Easterly and the sun on the snow is a lovely sight.

On the downside, the weight of snow on the branches has brought down one of my cherry trees. It was lovely in the spring with the blossom and red leaves. I'll be really sorry to lose it.

Scots V English

During periods of cold weather it appears that The Scottish/English handle it in totally different ways, depending on the following temperatures.

50* Fahrenheit
People in the South of England turn on central heating
People in Edinburgh put out bedding plants

40*Farenheit
Southerners shiver uncontrollably.
Glaswegians sunbathe on the beach

35*Farenheit
Cars in the South refuse to start.
People in Aberdeen drive with their windows down.

20* Farenheit
Southerners wear overcoats, gloves and wooly hats.
People in Aberdeen wear T.Shirts.

15* Farenheit
Southerners begin to evacuate to the continent.
People from Dundee swim in the River Tay.

0*Farenheit
Life in the South grinds to a halt.
Inverness folk have a last BBQ before it gets to cold.

Minus 10* Farenheit
Life in the South ceases to exist.
People in Dunfermline throw on a jumper

Minus 80* Farenheit
Polar bears wonder if its worth carrying on.
Boy Scouts in Oban start wearing long trousers

Minus 100* Farenheit
Santa Claus abandons the North pole.
Residents in Stirling put on their long johns.

Minus 173* Farenheit
Alcohol freezes.
Glasweigians upset because the pub is shut.

Minus 297* Farenheit
Microbial life starts to disappear.
The cows in Dumfriesshire complain about farmers with cold hands.

Minus 460* Fareheit
All atomic motion stops.
Shetlanders stamp their feet and blow on their hands.

Minus 500* Farenheit
Hell freezes over.
Scotland supports England in the World Cup
I can honestly say last night was the coldest I've ever been at work. Two fleeces, a full set of thermals, snood and wooly hat did nothing against the cold.

And there were still people leaving pubs with only a shirt on. :erm:

We had our first close call of the winter, some halfwit decided to go for a snooze on a bench. Only a foil blanket and emergency treatment for hypothermia saved his life. :dunce:
