On another note BBKing, have you purchased your executive box for Ashburton Grove yet ?
I got two, bargain at that price. We earn more down here, y'see. If the market wants £160,00 0 executive boxes, Arsenal would be foolish not to sell them at that price. It's an expensive business building in London.

Actually, Ashburton Grove should mean I get to more games, since the season ticket waiting list is longer than most Ice Ages. Mind you, the club is offering them as a priority to local residents, which I think is excellent.

Ho ho ho. Actually, the new ground is going up at a hell of a lick - makes Wembley look like a badly run overpriced bit of nonsense (although that arch really can be seen from a long way off - looks like the London Eye after Johnny Vegas went on it).

Invest some money in the squad or get the hell out of my football club.

Isn't life in the Coke Championship (no not Rio) great?

what a result yesterday.. was expecting to loose but Palace had 2 good chances in the first 5 mins then they had a player sent off. Should have won 6-0 or more and was denied a certain pen. Great game and we finally played some decent football.

Off the bottom of the table and on our way now.

I wouldn't quite go that far! 2-0 was a fine enough result. I remember Palace's last Premiership victory, I was working with a guy who was a Palace fan in the season that Arsenal finished top and Palace finished bottom - we effectively infected each other with a liking for each other's club. Since then I've had a soft spot for the Eagles, so well done to them.

Mind you, the most boring game I've ever seen was Arsenal 0 Palace 0 in the FA Cup.

Good Performance by England, for me man of the match was Nicky Butt, he looked like a new player.
Wonderful Beckham goal too.

You're obviously not a Wales fan, then :)

Thought England looked like a new side - probably the Rooney effect. I reckon Beckham deliberately got himself booked though, he looked totally crocked when he went off. Great goal though! England were astonishingly wasteful for an hour though.

Was Giggs playing?

i enjoyed the game , and we won...sorted
i am not biased at all ;) but the best players on the pitch were all manu or ex manu.
becks had a great game and so did owen , butt and neville
rio and the roon were both awesome
ashley cole had a great game and so did sol campbell (apart from him still going up for corners and wasting around six scoring chances a game).
on the minus side...
lampard had a good first 3 minutes then i never saw him again.
defoe or default?
and the taffs.......
giggsy had a good game , bellamy was useful at times and jones was brilliant in goal
bring on azjerbi..adjarbudg.....daddybyby.....whatever they are called

Er. OK. You're not biased. Lampard, Cole and Campbell were all excellent* for England, Gabbidon and Jones were Wales' best players. Not a lot of Man U in them. Wales were, I'm afraid, total cack apart from the above pair. Including Ryan 'Disappearing Act' Giggs.

Man U/ex Man U players involved: Rooney, Smith, Neville, Ferdinand, Giggs, Butt, Beckham. That's seven out of twenty seven players who played. Not a total surprise, but the best players on the pitch were certainly not all Man U.

*as were Ferdinand, Butt and Rooney, to show I'm not biased.

so Beckham has said he got booked deliberately as he knew he was injured and wouldn't make it anyway.

he said people didn't think he had the brains to do that but he has. The only problem is now he's told everyone UEFA and FIFA can give him a longer ban !!

I have to contest that- he knew he wouldn't be fit so got his suspension out of the way.

Nothing wrong with that, in fact it's quite sensible.

So what, it happens all the time! Anyway, the referee took action, gave the yellow, and that's all they can do. With the problem that he [could] be misquoted (although unlikely) fifa can't take action on the strength of a paper article anyway!

And I'm sure Thatcher, who isn't a total wuss, could handle it anyway. The intent to injure was clearly not there, the intent to foul was!

As for boasting, Winterburn and Dixon have said they did it, as do others. Are they getting fined as well?

I'm sure it happens all the time, but to come out and basically say "look at me, I'm so clever" is stupid.

I don't see anything wrong with deliberately getting a yellow card, but he couold have got it in another way than a bad tackle, which could have injured the other player.

I'd laugh if FIFA did ban him, just because he was stupid enough to admit it.

That was Beckhams best game in an England shirt for quite a while - he may still not be at 100% form-wise, but we haven't got anybody else with his ability from dead-balls and, IMO, he is probably the best at crossing the ball in the world.

Steady, if unispiring performance from England. Watching the Wales game, cannot believe they are still level at half time, so many chances. It is getting a bit niggly so could be a tasy second half.

Come on Wales.

i have to agree with the above, he also proved if hes given an angle hes more then capable of shooting from it in open play.

in response to what he did regarding the foul on thatcher, i say good on him, he got himself booked as he knew he was injureda and got the suspension out of the way, he never injured anyone, he just wanted the yellow card out of the way, i fully support his decision to do that, very smart move, he has not broken any FIFA rules etc, so he should not be punished.

if anyone wants to get sanctamonious about it they can, it still does not change a thing, its stupid that suggestions that players only undertake bans while fit should be implimented, its totally ludicrous.

wasn't a great performance against an average side but at least we got the job done.

Well done to Northern Ireland. They scored three goals in one match. After the run of not scoring they had it was a good performance.

Would have preferred the Poles and Austria to not score but we still looking good at moment. Need to improve performance and style of play still too many balls over the top even though we scored from a cross we didn't pump too many more in.

Sven out? What utter nonsense!

England may not play the best football around but, at the end of the day, we've got 6 points out of 6 this week (and, for that matter, 10 out of a possible 12, which isn't exactly rubbish).

Sven cannot directly affect the way England play during the 90 minutes and, taking into account the weather in Azerbaijan yesterday, Brazil would probably have had trouble.

TBH, I can't understand why people keep beefing on about Sven - when you see his results from competitive matches, it's practically unbeatable (I'm fairly sure that we've still only lost 2 while he's been the manager).

If you're going to criticise anybody, pick either the team who sometimes appear to lack the motivation on the pitch, or pick Mother Nature 'cos she's responsible for the howling gale and crappy rain that the match took place in!

yeah i wasn't impressed. Fortune can't pass or defend so not sure what he is doing out there.

At one point we had Nistelrooy, Smith, Saha, Rooney, Keane and Scholes out there and still couldn't string any passes together and had no idea what to do.

Birmingham played the better passing football.

While I dearly hope Manchester United carry this form into the next League game, I have a sneaking suspicion they'll play a lot better against us. Mind you, 11 points ahead, it doesn't make a lot of difference. Everton, Bolton and Middlesbrough are all above United now, all with better GD. Liverpool, Spurs and Newcastle can all go above United if they win their game in hand, too.

Re: [Merged] - Football talk

Quote:

No, but Everton might. I'm always pessimistic.

Actually, Chelsea losing does take the pressure off next weekend a bit - I've always thought this season would be decided by who wins the mini-league between ManU, Chelsea and Arsenal, and since we've only had one game in that so far it was too early to tell. But the goals-for column is so massively out of kilter that the 'defences win championships' argument mightn't work. Arsenal currently have the worst defence of the three, 8 goals conceded against 7 for Man U and 2 for Chelsea, but those 8 goals have only cost us 2 points, while Chelsea's 2 have cost them 3 points.

Manchester United will come good, if they find a midfield (Rooney/Scholes?) from somewhere, as Chelsea and Arsenal (and a few other clubs - Xabi Alonso at Liverpool is a superb signing) are way ahead at the moment. No point having 65m quid of strikers with no supply.

Re: [Merged] - Football talk

For me Ferguson never seems to put out the right team, and it is not down to injuries, I think there is too much player rotation within the squad and nobody seems to gel.

This has been the case since Ferguson threatened to quit, plus another major factor in utd's recent demise from being the top team was the exit of Steve McClaren to Middlesbrough.

I say demise, but they are still a top team, but if they ever do gel and Ferguson stops messing about with rotation, all I can say is watch out, but I am not sure if or when that will happen.

With Ferguson spending all that money, if utd do not have any success this season, I am sure his future in his present position will be in doubt.
Move him upstairs and get Martin O'Neill in to deal with the current squad.

Having said all of the above, after 12 years of success, it was bound to come to an end at some point, so I can't moan really, but with the squad that they have they should be doing better than they are.

yeah you right about never putting the right team out. How can you play Fortune someone who was a rubbish winger and not a defender at left back. How can Phil Neville get in the side as well.

We just don't seem to have any ideas at the moment and several players need to start performing. Scholes doesn't look as sharp as he used to and Giggs has been rubbish for a couple of seasons.

At this rate I can see us struggling to finish third.

Well as an Arsenal fan although it pains me to say it well done Man U.

Although Man U were not brilliant by any means Arsenal will lacking in every area today.

I think the referee didnt help either as he seemed to be blind folded for the first 30 mins and blinkered for the next 60 mins.

Rooney should have won an oscar for that dive not a penalty ;)

And then it seemed the refs poor sight spread to his other officials when Rooney popped up from offside for the second goal.

Then again Lauren should have been booked for diving and Viera and Cole and Edu were lucky to stop on the field.

Henry was lacking his usual panache and rarely ran back to win balls and help out in defence.

And Freddie should have had a free kick for Ferdiand barging him off the ball.

All in all united deserved the win but not by the way it came.

Now the 49 game unbeaten tag is out of the way we can play some proper football.

Yep, don't know why Wenger thinks Arsenal deserved the win, after all UTD had more attempts on goal, more shots on target..

In other news apparently Fergie had soup thrown over him after the match.

Arsenal are almost certain to find themselves back in disciplinary hot water after their latest ill-tempered encounter with Manchester United ended with a cup of pea soup being thrown over Sir Alex Ferguson as rival players clashed in the tunnel after the game.
One witness described ArsÃÃâ€*’¨ne Wenger's players as going "berserk", with Thierry Henry and Jens Lehmann among those wanting to prolong the argument after the final whistle.

The identity of the Arsenal player who splattered Ferguson is unclear, largely because of the number of individuals involved in the mÃÃâ€*’ªlÃÆ ’Ãâ€*’©e. Ferguson, apparently undaunted by the physical presence of some of those involved, was struck by a full beaker of hot soup, soaking his suit.

Although Ferguson was not scalded he had to change into his tracksuit and wipe his face and hair clear of soup splashes before his post-match interview with Sky. Despite his fiery reputation, however, the Manchester United manager was said to be "strangely calm" throughout the incident.

Wenger was not involved but was far from calm later when accusing Wayne Rooney of diving and the entire Manchester United team of "kicking his players off the park deliberately".

When Cole hacked down Ronaldo a few minutes after Rooney did his Pires impersonation was definately a penalty, the ref bottled that one just like he did with the Ferdinand barge in the first half.

sherer 25-10-2004 11:02

Re: [Merged] - Football talk

what a result even if the game wasn't all that. As a Man U fam is't great for me and nice to end their run. If we had scored a pen last season then the run never would have started.

As a Man U fam will say it wasn't a pen as there was very little if any contact. However neither was there for Pires against Portsmouth. If you do it to other teams it will get done back to you. Ronaldo should have had a pen so it all evens out in the end.

Nice to see they are great loosers when the second clearly onside goal went in they surrounded the ref and linesman instead of saying well done for beating us. Rooney was behind the ball and there was a defender and the keeper in front of him.

In the tunnel soup and water were thrown at Fergie. Maybe this time the FA will really come down hard on Arsenal.

Notice how at the end of the match we didn't run up to Lehman and jump on him like Keown did with Nistelrooy last year !!

For Ronaldo's pen I can see how the ref missed it as Ronaldo dragged the ball back just before Cole hit him, so depending on the refs angle it might have looked like Cole made contact with the ball.

As for the Ferdinand incident - free kick, nothing more. In my opinion not a sending off.

I would have given the Ljunberg incident as well but at the time he didn't have the ball which is why I think the ref never gave anything. Did you notice how both managers kept harrassing the fourth official about every decision ?

Henry was lucky not to get sent off for stamping and barging into Heinze when he was on the ground.

Yes, it was because Ljungberg played the ball too far forwards before he was fouled by Rio. So even if he wasn't fouled he would not have been able to get to the ball before Carroll.
You do not get sent off simply for being the last man. According to the laws of the game, you have to deny a clear goal scoring opportunity. As Ljungberg played the ball too far forwards it was not a goal scoring opportunity as Carroll would have reached the ball first.

Therefore in my opinion it should have been a free kick to Arsenal and nothing more.

Re: [Merged] - Football talk

Giggs and Scholes had poor games on Sunday though. Giggs had 2 good chances to score and wasted both of them.. Not really seen him do anything since THAT goal in 99.

Just look at the amount of times we've tried to buy a left winger I think Fergie knows we can do better in that position but as the deals never come off we are just left with Giggs.

As a side note on my other team. i think knows the time for Andy Johnson to get an England cap. he's far better than Heskey, Ricketts and Vassell and on a good bit of form as well. We have a friendly coming up so why not test him out.

Russ 25-10-2004 12:41

Re: [Merged] - Football talk

I've said for a while now that Giggs may be past his sell-by date. He's given a phenomenal amount of loyalty to the club and we've seen some incredible performances from him but those seem to be too few and far between these days. Saying that though, I'm sure his form was heavily crticised during a bad spell 2 seasons ago and a few weeks later he went on to have the best few games of his life!

sherer 25-10-2004 12:52

Re: [Merged] - Football talk

the fact is though Giggs is 30 yo at the moment which means the last 3 years should have been the best of his career.. instead we get one or 2 good games a season and even in those games he is never great for 90 mins..

he is past his best now.. just look at the amount of times he runs really quickly into a defender and looses the ball.. he still hasn't learnt to go around them.. even for that goal he got abit of luck..

he does all these stupid flicks that never go to anyone and he can't cross , pass or take a corner or free kick.

i was at the FA Cup game the other year against arsenal when he missed an open goal!!

he could have scored twice on sunday instead i knew when he was one on one he would miss or it would be saved.. it was a weak shot that even Tiabi could have saved !!

Scholes hasn't had a great game for ahwile now either.. and on sunday we played with 9 men as Giggs and Phil Neville were out there..

would have rather Flecther started instead he's far better and has a footballing brain..

'Going' sour??

Still it's interesting to see Arse players throwing food about rather than dealing with things man-to-man. Do you the think the catering at Old Trafford really is that bad? I had a pastie when I went to The Vetch to watch Swansea play once and certainly felt like flinging it at the referee....

Well Rooney definately was not offside in the virual replay on that link.:)

Van Nis was guilty of a nasty challenge, mind you it also looked like Henry was trying to part Heinze's hair with his studs at one point.

Interesting interview with Jeff Winter shown on the tv, he was saying that teams can't have it both ways, in particular picking out Arsene Wenger. He reckons that if it had happened in Arsenals favour Mr Wenger would have said that he didn't see the incident so couldn't comment.

Mr Wenger comes across as a really bad loser and his team seem to have an attitude problem, not saying this as a Utd fan just a football fan in general.

Yeah, going sour, because the FA need to get involved again in a game between Man U and Arsenal.

Nistelrooy should have been yellow or even red carded for that tackle on Cole, nobody was more surprised than me when nothing happened at all.

As for Rooney diving, well that happens all the time in football I hate to say.
I am not sure how Arsenal can complain about that as they are guilty of it also.

Tunnel incident ? Who knows, maybe that is a matter for MUFC.

Wenger................should learn to keep his gob shut, or at least try and be a little more diplomatic, it is just a typical cry baby reaction I suppose.

Overriding factor, Man U won and Arsenal lost.

i think we all know the arsenal team are bad loosers.. i think they got more decisions go for them over a season than man u do.. look at the other week when a ref awarded a pen against them and changed his mind.. that must be the first time in history that has happened..

wenger will never say we were beaten by a better team and when they get a decision from diving etc he doesn't see it.. i don't think any of that team have any sporting blood at all.. look at last season.. look at how they were after we scored the second goal and look at what happened in the tunnel..

not one comment about well if we had scored 3 we would have won maybe we should look at our performance or we were beaten by a better side

anyhow the better team won, we were stronger in defence, maybe not the sharpest in attack at times but atleast when the chances came we took them :)

Man united 12 shots, 6 on target

Arsenal 12 shots, 6 on target

Now i call that pretty even....not sure where you got your information from though :dozey: intresting.....

Also the secound incident may not have happened if we had not being attacking to get the equalising goal but i am not here to argue if you should have won or not i am just disputing the claims that united where all over arsenal and stuff. The game was 50 - 50, not a unstopable wave of excellence from a better united team

Well if you actually watched the match you would have noticed those stats to be incorrect.

Check the sky website for the correct stats which are...

Man Utd
Shots on target 5
Shots off target 5

Arsenal
Shots on target 1
Shots off target 7

Well it wasn't what you'd call an excellent match from either side. The action was mainly in the midfield with neither side dominating totally.

We won. What else can you say?
