That was what I was thinking he meant however for it to become standard the HD charge would need to be dropped in my opinion.

Virgin Media reportedly close to BT Sport carriage deal

Virgin Media said to be close to signing carriage deal for BT Sport
BT and Virgin Media are thought to be close to making a deal on the carriage of BT Sport channels.

The finishing touches are reportedly being put to a deal that will see Virgin Media team up with BT in order to offer customers the latter's new Sport package.

According to Broadcast, the telecoms companies have been in negotiations for some time and are eager to establish a contract ahead of BT Sport going live on Thursday (August 1st), although it is not yet clear if this will involve Virgin charging viewers for the service as a standalone product.

Should the deal go ahead, it will mean the three BT Sport channels - BT Sport 1, BT Sport 2 and ESPN - can be offered to four million Britons who currently get their pay TV from Virgin.

"We're always looking to bring the best possible value and choice of great quality content to our customers and we're talking to BT about how we could potentially make the forthcoming BT Sport package available," said a Virgin Media spokesperson.

All BT broadband customers have free access to the online BT Sport player and mobile app. In addition, BT Sport is free to Infinity customers with a BT TV package and to BT broadband customers who have a Sky set-top box.

Just noticed the news stories that BT Sport had garnered half a million subscribers. They're not going to get much ad revenue on that number. You would think they're missing a trick if they don't add payments from Virgin for the channel PLUS the higher potential ad revenue the VM customer base would bring.

LOL I love all this will they won't they stuff :)

Look, I want VM to get BT as much as the next person BUT if we got it and it was standalone people would complain...if it meant a £5 on the sports package a month people would complain...if we didn't get it at all people would complain.

There is no lack of info from VM this time round, they keep saying they are in active talks, confirmed by BT, so what more can we ask for.

The closer we get to the new PL season the more itchy BT will get. They know full well they need VM custom just as much as VM need BT sport.

A deal will be done, but if VM play hardball right up until PL starts they may get a better deal!

Don't expect anything tomorrow.

Re: ESPN, BT, Euro, Premier and Sky Sports news

While all the previous talk about 'secret deals' is obviously nonsense, it is in both sides' interest to let negotiations run to the wire (and possibly beyond), in order to judge the customer take up of BT's service.

Obviously if that is significantly less than planned, then BT will be under pressure to accept a lower price than would otherwise be the case. Virgin have repeatedly shown themselves unwilling to pay over the odds or be held to ransom - from the Sky Basics situation, ITV HD channels, Sky Atlantic, etc etc.

If a price is agreed, a deal can be done very quickly, if not it won't, it's as simple as that. Both sides are preparing the ground for either eventuality.

Wouldn't put it past them to add it to the standard price to get even more income.
