The main one i want is EPIX HD as it is movies on demand, tv channel and on your pc. They are not outside the US yet but they are working on it here is the website:

But if Lovefilm had access to a 4M customer base via VM 10MB port dedicated to this purpose to ensure quality of service, they would be interested in provide HD, with maybe a premium price over current Lovefilm charges?? I see a business opportunity here which would help both parties.

Isn't the opportunity here that VMs Tivo solution opens up a convenient route to streaming HD films to peoples houses?

With Amazon fully ownig lovefilm now, I suspect HD is already in their plans.

Personally, I'd like a subscription model, not a 'pay per movie' model, which I can get now via my Sony blueray player.

I disagree. TiVo had a full year headstart on Sky and only sold 35k in it's first 18 months (12 months of those Sky+ wasn't even available, the next 6 months it was limited in availability).

I remember the Sky marketing for TiVo - it did exist. It was on their 999 welcome channel on a continuous loop, and Sky boxes weren't exactly on 24/7 at the time so it was definitely seen. People just didn't want it and no amount of marketing can sell something the public don't want.

When Sky+ came along a year after TiVo it gave people (in general) what they wanted - record and watch something else at the same time (like the VCR they were used to). TiVo was a geek's niche (probably why I had it!)

Sky were saying that they would bring out an intergrated PVR, at the same time as "promoting" TiVo. Customers just held on till an all in one box was launched.

Sky+ was very pricey when 1st launched.. close on £380 :shocked:

It still is , us geeks love it but the majority aren't bothered about YouTube and suggestions.

But early adopters like us are geeks. Plus a lot of them won't place orders when they realise they have to pay a monthly sub as well as the upfront cost.

Or, people had no idea what a PVR was, and just didn't want TiVo? Enthusiasts read press releases - the general public don't. I don't ever recall anyone saying "don't buy a TiVo coz Sky have a better one coming next year", from the press/Sky or anyone I came into contact with (and I worked in the industry at the time).

I'd be interested to see how many Sky had shifted after their first 18 months to put the myth to bed that Sky completely ruined TiVo in any way other than launching a different product that suited people's needs better.

TiVo was £400 - both pricey products when a VCR could probably be had for less than half the price.

It's the reason I and a few of my friends didn't buy one... we waited for Sky+, which was good, but a little basic compared to what TiVo could do, but we thought it was going to be the same....

Sky dropped the price to £249/£279 and thats when I got mine. I wanted the integration too.

The V+ box used to cost £150 just like the TiVo and at present the is around a million in circulation according to this site. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/V%2B

What does that prove? That when TiVo has been around as long as V+ there will be around a million of those in circulation?
