Its amazing to see how much you guys are interested in what will be the new name of the company -- why care? What matters is whether there will be traffic caps imposed on existing or new Telewest customers. Now _THAT_ is important.

only if you're a Telewest customer or potential customer and care about traffic limits!

You'd be surprised by how important names are.

I remember in the dim & distant past (end of the 80s I think) my Travelcard got me unlimited travel within London on buses and tubes. There was also a Capitalcard which was just like a Travelcard only you got unlimited travel on trains too - great for South Londoners, as there are only a handful of tube stations south of the river. But of course us sophisticated North Londoners with easy access to tubes didn't want to shell out the extra for a Capitalcard.

Then there was a horrible rumour - they were planning on getting rid of the Travelcard :(. Much dinner party chattering about how awful it was that we should be expected to pay extra for the benefit of those feckless Southies who didn't have the decency to live in Hampstead - or at worst, Kilburn.

Luckily, they never got rid of the Travelcard - they dumped the Capitalcard instead. And as a bonus, they improved the Travelcard so that you could also now get unlimited travel on trains as well. How delighted we were, and we didn't mind paying a bit more than the old Travelcard had costs before, because look - we got to use those nice shiny new Thameslink trains ..... ;)

You gotto be joking right? Its not like we are talking about brand of car that everyone sees you in, or brand of cloths that you wear and everyone else sees it.

But I understand -- your life juices were sucked out by NTL with stupid cap of 3 GB, what a joke that they'd better not apply to Telewest customers!

The same time the merger was announced it seems that ntl have gone out of the way to promote virgin bb as opposed to ntl freedom -

Great news! Weâ₠¬ÃƒÂ¢Ã¢â‚¬Å¾Ã‚¢ve done a deal with our friends at Virgin.net who can offer you broadband from £14.99 a month with no 12 month contract. However, if you would like to sign up for ntl Freedom Broadband please click here.
The 'not in a cabled area?' link's page on ntl.com has also changed -

ntl do not offer services outside its cable network.
However, we recommend Virgin.net who offer a range of Internet
options including broadband with no 12 month contract.
All you need is a BT line.
Huh? Say what? I thought ntl wholly own virgin.net! Maybe part of some new plan separating opinion from ntl or separating virgin running over BT's network as opposed to ntl freedom being a new LLU expansion?

But nevertheless, brand names are important. Most people buy things on gut instinct and then do 'comparisons' not to establish what's best but to justify their gut decisions. Get the brand name wrong and people may end up doing comparisons to justify their gut reaction against your product.

There isn't a 3GB cap on my NTL services. There's -currently- a flexible 30GB usage allowance which isn't being enforced. I've never been asked to reduce my internet even though I go over 30GB most months.

I do not know if NTL own virgin.net, maybe somebody does?
I do not think that if it is a plan to seperate opinion from NTL it will really work?
After all, if people have issues with virgin.net, others are just going to say, " oh well, its owned by NTL ( allegedly ) what do you expect "

Re: [Update] NTL to buy Telewest

ntl DO own virgin.net. They also have the ntl:freedom brand, but it isn't very sensible to have two brands in the same market. So the two are merging and, as the virgin brand is better-known, it will be known as virgin.net. At the moment there are still different product offerings, but I doubt this will last long.

Re: [Update] NTL to buy Telewest

Do we actually know if the two brands are going to be merged?

There's always the possibility that the new company will keep the separate NTL and Telewest brands if the costs of merging the product line are too excessive

Personally I think this'll be the case for at least the next 12 months or so

The first thing I would expect to hit telewest users is the proxies been enforced again for them, thats something ntl can do stealthily and cheaply, other stuff like caps package changes sacking telewest call centre staff to outsource etc. will be harder to do.

30 Gigs, bit mistake -- 3 or 30 its still pityful amount for even 1 Mbits connection, not talking about 10 Mbits!

I hope Telewest users will be totally up in arms IF NTL tries to impose caps, if you guys who use NTL were more organised then chances are you would not have had any caps too. :(

 just found out Sky has a offshore call centre as well
