It'll be interesting to see. Originally the Phantom Menace got huge rave reviews as the first sw film released in quite a while, now though... it's fairly universally hated on, will TFA go the same way?

Nah. It would have happened already and people are enjoying it though sustained viewings. It's a very solid, well-made, film.

I have now watched it 4 times and its still holding up as a great movie.

I don't think its totally to do with production or script rewrites. Personally I think the realised a Chrstmas release was a financial winner for them and normally that time of year is a big dry for mega releases and so want to cash in on that again.

I avoided all trailers and other Star Wars related stuff.

I loved the film, so did my nephew.

I read storylines in some of the books I'd like to have seen explored in a film or two, but I can see why they did what they did. If they'd have followed the storyline in the books, they'd have been making that storyline canon. This would have upset those fans who preferred other storylines, and they'd have complained their favourite storyline was being ignored. Also, the writing team behind the film would have to scrutinise all the books to ensure they don't contradict any details from any of them, which would not really have been practical.

It's much easier to ignore all of it.

I'm sure that story wouldn't have been any worse the 'Star Trek - The Motion Picture'.

Possibly not, but apparently Gene Roddenberry was actually quite heavily involved in that one.

Timeline? That was always going to be a nonsense given that Lucas himself screwed the timeline by going all prequel on us..

I enjoyed some of the original novels but incorporating them in the film series would have been impossible. There was too much detail. I can't see how they could have done it without simply adapting one of the novels wholesale. Any other approach would have been a tangled mess, no doubt very pleasing to super fans but not much good to anyone else.

The books could not have been kept as canon as there were simply too many off them and so many different storylines and timelines.

It was always gonig to be easier to dismiss them and start from scratch.

BTW Rogue One looks amazing! Captures the feel of the 70s Star Wars while taking it in a totally new direction.

That battle with AT-ATs on the tropical looking planet looks awesome!

I was weary when I heard they were making standalone spinoffs because I thought they were just thinking about $$$ but this really does look flipping good and I'll defo be going to the midnight premiere for it and probably the 3 o'clock showing afterwards.

what winds me up is why they dick about with the dates. If they knew they were going to bring it forward they should have just done it from the get go. I have booked the Friday off work assuming that I was going to be at the cinema all of Thursday night.
