Taylor joy; Winstanley nine-darter.

Phil Taylor serenely made it through to the quarter-finals of the PDC World Darts Championship in the last match before the tournament shut down for Christmas.

Before him, Andy Hamilton sounded a warning to those above him in the pecking order with an impressive 4-1 win over Terry Jenkins.

Also in ominous form was many people's title favourite, Michael van Gerwen.

The Dutchman was up against the flamboyance of Peter Wright and seemed a little stage-struck early on as he went 2-0 down, but won four sets on the reel to book his place in the third round after the Christmas break.

Jenkins had a good start (hit 180 often at start), but then fell away each leg.

Gerwin played well. Winstanley played well too, but left it too late.

Indeed they did play well but old Phil is still there and he is ready to rumble.

Michael van Gerwen made light of a foot injury to beat Colin Lloyd and book his place in the quarter-finals of the PDC World Darts Championship and was joined in the final eight by compatriot Raymond van Barneveld and defending champion Adrian Lewis on Thursday night.
