Still waiting to see if someone can explain the High first 512K reading that I keep getting. Happens every test and artificially inflates the overall speed, or does it? Am I actually getting 6.36 Mbps? If so, what can I do to make the other three tests work as fast so that I can boast of having 10MB AND 4MB at once?

Yea I was getting 2.7mb when i ahd zonelarm on you have to totally uninstall it and restart the pc, then i was gettin 3.9mb so simply turning off zonealarm does not work you have to totally uninstall it.

sheka 27-06-2006 22:15

Re: Speed Increases 1st June - 2meg to 4meg

I also have had to uninstall zonealarm as with it installed I was limited to approx 2.7Mb/s. Uninstalled and I now get my full 4Mb/s (almost)...

Re: Speed Increases 1st June - 2meg to 4meg

I seriously doubt you have to uninstall it!

I've tried with ZoneAlarm switched off and are still getting only about 2.5Mbps. I think this is due to the NTL:Home 100 modem.

does anyone have the number i call to get a new modem - is it customer services or tech support? I'm not going to be fobbed off with this 'up to...' cr*p.

Thanks,

uninstall it and try.....you could always install it again afterwards.....

or download a linux livecd (knoppix) and surf to

and download SP2.......that is how I checked that it was not a network problem

Re: Speed Increases 1st June - 2meg to 4meg

you may be able to stop/kill the "true vector" service (part of zonealarm). This doesn't get stopped when you just shutdown zonealarm.

4th 512K took 1172 ms = 436.9 KB/sec, approx 3600 Kbps, 3.52 Mbps

tests carried out between 11pm and 2am.. averages are..
0.73 Mbps, 1.4 Mbps, 0.27 Mbps, 1.08 Mbps, 2.5 Mbps, 2.12 Mbps, 2.52 Mbps, 1.38 Mbps, 2.07 Mbps, 1.59 Mbps, 1.63 Mbps (in order but not regular intervals)

(for those looking for the address) using homepage.ntlworld.com/paul.marsden/newspeedtest.html

after doing the first few i was a bit shocked to see when i visited 192.168.100.1 that i *had* actually been upgraded. not even managing to sustain 300Kb/s on a 4Mb line! and now i have to pay them more to complain about it?!

i have no 3rd party firewall, and an NTL:250 modem. just rubbish area? or?
..u'd think at 2AM u'd get pretty decent speeds..

by all accounts, you have to actually uninstall ZA to get the standard stack back as za embeds itself really low down in the network stack and mearly turning it off doesnt cut it, uninstall it and try again.

What are people getting for upload speeds?

I've got a pretty solid 3.7-4 Mbps download, but only 120 Kbps upload (ftp to ntlworld) - I'm a bit disappointed since I was more or less getting that on 2Mb.

Re: Speed Increases 1st June - 2meg to 4meg

I was getting 4 meg speeds on tuesday, around 3.8 mbps speed tests, but just redid the speed test today to get this:
Wed, 28 Jun 2006 13:19:25 GMT

1st 512K took 5359 ms = 95.5 KB/sec, approx 787 Kbps, 0.77 Mbps
2nd 512K took 5016 ms = 102.1 KB/sec, approx 841 Kbps, 0.82 Mbps
3rd 512K took 4875 ms = 105 KB/sec, approx 865 Kbps, 0.84 Mbps
4th 512K took 4656 ms = 110 KB/sec, approx 906 Kbps, 0.88 Mbps

Overall Average Speed = approx 850 Kbps, 0.83 Mbps
Download speeds have dropped from 450kbps to 80kbps.

Oh great NTL.

Peil,

It would seem that part of the speed test is being read from your brower cache (hence the 1st result). Re-run the test and click on the link at the bottom to run the test from the server. This will give you your "real" speed

My downloads were poor as well until i removed zonealarm ,averaged 2.5 Mbps, cleaned the registry as well just to be sure.I tested the download speed by grabbing service pack 2 from windows, using reget download manager it was coming down full whack, very pleased.

you only need Zone alarm if you dont already have a firewall.

If you have a router then zone alarm is next to useless as your already NAT'd which means all internet traffic will be going to the router, not you.

If you use windows firewall in my professional opinion its more than enough and actually performs better than Zonealarm.

Done be over protective, itll just harm you.

Windows Firewall and a NAT router offer inbound protection only. They do not protect against rogue applications making a connection outbound. ZoneAlarm does.

Unfortunatley ZA can be a little overprotective, though I cant speak for the newer versions thats the reason I stopped using it.

That is not quite true since SP2. Windows Firewall will ask whether some packages which need to make outgoing connections should be granted permission (like Zone Alarm). The difference is that Windows seems to implicitly trust a lot of MS applications (so it doesn't ask you about them) and some other applications too. I am not sure of the rules that apply but it would not surprise me if someone writing nasty code could not con the firewall into trusting it though.

Having said that if you have decent AV software you stand little risk of catching something that will try to transmit out, so an extra firewall is really overkill.

Hello,

I'm in peterborough with a NTL120 modem and was getting 2.4mbs down and 379kbs up (up was fine but down wasn't). I turned off the Zonealarms firewall due to reading comments about the firewall interfering and was still getting 2.4mbs. Talked to NTL thro broadband medic and called CS. After 50 minutes of talking and testing the connection i was told to wait till after 30th june when the network upgrades are finished then ring back if the speed is still slow.

Anyway, after reading the last couple of pages i uninstalled ZA and now i'm getting 3.81mbs on a NTL120!!!!!!

Thanks to all the peeps for posting about the uninstall of ZA, simply turning off ZA didn't work for me.

Well it's never asked me for permission on anything, ZA included.
The same goes for the firewall on my XP Pro machine at work.

Windows XP Firewall completely fails the shields up test at grc.com - not good.

What ZA does do is stop MS WGA phoning home everyday. (Yes my copy of XP is legit, I just don't like the idea of MS calling home without permission or a damn good reason)

Anyway, ZA is not affecting my data throughput, so it'll be staying for now.

I do most things on my Mac anyway.

So you clicking "yes" to agree to the terms and conditions when you install it doesn't in your book count as "your permission" then?

From the Register's article:
Quote:

Microsoft has admitted that Windows Genuine Advantage (WGA) will phone Redmond every day - something it neglected to tell users before they installed it.
I also agree with firewallleaktester.com:
Quote:

Once the WGA Notification tool has checked your OS and has confirmed you had a legit copy, there is no decent point or reason to check it again and again every boot. ... It is also unclear which information are transmitted. All of that, along the fact that Microsoft used deceptive ways to make you install this tool (it was told you it was an urgent security update, whereas it is a new installation giving you no extra security) makes me calling this tool a spyware.
Anyway, this is way :notopic: now, so I'll say no more here.

Re: Speed Increases 1st June - 2meg to 4meg

Am only managing around 2.4M (rather than 4M) since the upgrade. Spoke to NTL Tech 'Support' who were very patronising, refused to accept any of the speed test data, the only speed test they would accept was to download a file off Tucows!!. Quoted http and nntp results to them but not interested. Then they tried to suggest I must have spyware or that my poor bandwidth was due to evil peer to peer programs. I mentioned the Zone Alarm reports from on here and was told that if ZA wasn't running then it was irrelevant (they don't accept that True Vector service has any effect). So basically I am left with the following:

Fri, 30 Jun 2006 00:43:11 GMT

1st 512K took 1750 ms = 292.6 KB/sec, approx 2411 Kbps, 2.35 Mbps
2nd 512K took 1656 ms = 309.2 KB/sec, approx 2548 Kbps, 2.49 Mbps
3rd 512K took 1797 ms = 284.9 KB/sec, approx 2348 Kbps, 2.29 Mbps
4th 512K took 1687 ms = 303.5 KB/sec, approx 2501 Kbps, 2.44 Mbps

Overall Average Speed = approx 2452 Kbps, 2.39 Mbps

Anything else I could try to get better performance or gather data that NTL 'Support' might actually pay attention to?

Any speed upgrade requires a reboot of the cable modem as it needs to download a new configuration file for the new speed.

2nd 512K took 1109 ms = 461.7 KB/sec, approx 3804 Kbps, 3.71 Mbps
3rd 512K took 1063 ms = 481.7 KB/sec, approx 3969 Kbps, 3.88 Mbps
4th 512K took 1078 ms = 475 KB/sec, approx 3914 Kbps, 3.82 Mbps

Overall Average Speed = approx 3886 Kbps, 3.8 Mbps

Using Kerio 4 here with no problems with speed
After speed issues with Zone Alarm limiting me to 2.7.
Just tried the Sunbelt version of Kerio ver 4 , no joy for me, even worse, went down to .8Mb

use kerio 4.2.2 not the sunbelt version.

Is uninstalling Zone Alarm the real answer to why people are getting slow speed test reults. Maybe its just the speedtest software that is affected by Zone Alarm and not actual download speeds?

I only get on average 2.7 Meg when using the speed test, but my downloads are downloading at approx 350 KBps, so would they download any quicker by removing Zone Alarm?

It certainly should, mine tops out at around 486KBs. :)

Is there anyone who can actually CONFIRM that Zone Alarm is causing the speed issue? I spoke to NTL Support who said it was nonsense.

Since the upgrade I have only ever managed to get around 2.4 Meg whether using http or nntp. I do have Zone Alarm installed but why should it affect a 4 Meg connection when it didn't interfere with my previous 2 Meg connection which performed as expected ?

Also, is there any way I can disable the True Vector component of Zone Alarm without having to uninstall the whole program?

Evidence is anecdotal, but with ZA installed I get 2.8Mb/s with ZA uninstalled I get 3.8Mb/s - using both the forum speed test & also David Elwells.

That doesn't 'confirm' ZA as the cause of the problem, but does confirm how it can be cured....

afaik you can't disable true vector without uninstalling?

I got fed up with ZA and now just use windows firewall along with my router.

Windows firewall only checks incoming data just like a router, if you want to stop programs calling home you have to have a decent firewall running on the computer.

You could use Comodo personal firewall :)

I also got fed up with ZoneAlarm reducing my speed to around 2.3Mbps. Uninstalled it and now get around 3.81Mbps. :)

I now use the Windows firewall, which offers pretty good security and passed all the 'Sheilds Up' tests. Just run Adaware and/or SpyBot search&destroy once a week to be safe.

Ok - got rid of sun belt one, and put 4.2.2 on - but 'fraid its the same for me, limited to 0.8 !

Re: Speed Increases 1st June - 2meg to 4meg

Just to report back my experience on performing a clean uninstall of Zone Alarm. Using the Speed Test on here the results appeared to be even worse than they were with ZA installed but my most accurate measure of speed has consistently been to use NewsPro and download from usenet newsgroups and results are as follows:

2Meg connection: c. 240 KB/s
4Meg with ZA: c. 300 KB/s
4Meg without ZA: c. 490 KB/s

So, conclusions for me at least are that the speed test is unreliable and that completely removing Zone Alarm has fixed the bandwidth throttling problem. A big thank-you to all those that pointed it out on here.

Having uninstalled ZA and got rid of the apparent speed throttling I then installed Kerio 4.2.2. Although nntp was unaffacted (getting 490KB/s) downloading via HTTP was affected even worse than using ZA. The only advantage with Kerio is you can shut it down and then get decent speeds again. Can anyone recommend a personal firewall that does NOT throttle http download speeds?

No offence but your stupid then, how do you no you dont have a virus or a torjan if you dont have anything to check for them? Fair enough you dont need a firewall if you have a router as that makes a pritty nice one, but i would seriously concider installing some basic antivirus protection.

I use Symantec Antivirus Corporate Edition, Windows Defender and my linksys router... never had any problems with it affecting my internet or slowing down my computers, Norton Antivirus is a diffrent matter though ;)

Also like your website, i used it last july to setup my Abyss Webserver :D

I think the rule of thumb is to have atleast the following installed.

1. A decent upto date Antivirus.

2. A software firewall (not Windows Firewall as this doesn't stop outgoing traffic phoning home).

3. Some spyware/adaware software like Windows Defender.

4. If the budget allows a hardware firewall as well as a software firewall installed.

When i was on 2 meg, downloads were quick and web sites came up really quick, then they upgraded me about 3 weeks ago to 4 meg , it was great for about a week then it all started going down hill.

Web Sites are now slow to load, some sites you can download fast from, but the majority are about 4kb/s, im not happy, hope they can sort this out soon or im going to blow a nut! :o: BH15 AREA

have you got some urls of these 4kb/s sites, perhaps some people will try them to see if they are also getting slow downloads or perhaps these sites are slow due to restricting their upload speeds?.

Since getting my 4MB uplift speeds have deteriorated and I hardly ever get anything approaching that speed now. Typically it is about 2.5MB (or under). Is this a common phenomenon, and if so what are people doing about it?
