im sorry handyman but you are wrong just looks at the facts when everyone was on 3mg lines there was no problems or anything significant and suddenly they roll out 10mg and upgrade the 3mg users even though they dont want to be and boom the sxxt hits the fan there is clearly a problem providing a stable 10mg or even 5mg to a lot of this country just look at the posts with all the areas...sheesh..you know what i cant really be assed to sit here tryin to explain this anymore because does nothin to sort it or to my damm blood pressure:) i just hope that your speed does not fall the same way then we shall see your response:) im just an average guy that wants at least an average service for my money is that to much to ask you think?

just thought i would take a quick look:hmm
portmouths,harrowgate,cambs,watford,aylesbury,dove r,guilford,basildon,leicester,nthampton,manchester ,s.e.londo
to name just a few:) across the whole country and there aint a 10mg problem? haha

handyman you assume most people ring up when they got problem's, eg. my sister who is far from tech savvy was wondering why pages sometimes timeout on her pc and she assumed it was the website fault and wasnt even considering ringing ntl. When her tv box broke it took her 4 months to bother ringing up simply because she couldnt be arsed. Probably a fair few people around the same.

Ntl have well over 1 milllion broadband customers and If there was a issue as big as you think it is then there would be a 2hr wait to speak to customer service. This is not the case. And there will be something done about it rest assured.

There will be 1000's of people will good stable 9-10mbs connection.

Maybe your right? but that makes things even harder for us customers on the 10mb who are having problems and have been for a few weeks now... everything was hunkydory for me and many other 10meg users before, i was reaching speeds of 1.0mbit + every test i did... usually 1.3mbps on the news servers. as for the 20-30 customers u mention having probs on here, what about all the ntl customers out there who know nothing about cable forum who are maybe trying to get an idea of what might be happening with there braodband? let alone the customer who just doesnt even know how to check if he/she is getting the correct speed they subscribe to? and yes, this is a major issue for ntl the more potential customers who read this type of thread are more likely to shy away from nthell and find there broadband and other services from a more reliable company that keeps their customers in the know and not the dark. so if ntl dont want that to happen, then they'd better pull their finger out and get it sorted. :fit:

Re: *ALL* ntl 10Mb Discussion (Part 3)

Just thought I'd throw my two pence worth in on the last few posts.

One million broadband customers? Yes, but how many on 10Mb? I have a Samsung STB and was on the 3Mb package. Apparently I was upgraded to 10Mb on the 14 December. However, I wasn't informed of the upgrade and, as I was still getting 3Mb then I didn't know I had a problem. It was only when I cam across this board a couple of weeks ago I found out about 10Mb and called ntl to see when I would be upgraded that I found out I ws already upgraded. So how many people are there out there that don't even know they're on 10Mb and are unaware they have a problem?

I used to have a lot of problems with myt ntl connection about 4-5 months ago. I would just keep losing the entire broadband and digital TV for 4-10 hours. Everytime it happened I reported the fault and it only took about 1-2 mins to get through, baring the recorded bits like "try rebooting your system' etc. Now when I phone ntl it's taking me 5-15mins to get through, and this is mid week in the day time, not evenings and weekends. to me this signifies a big increase in the number of people contacting ntl.

I've also noticed that the weekly lists of planned maintenance have increased threefold in the last few weeks. Again, this indicates to me they know things are not right at the moment. However, it also shows that they are trying to do something about it.

I have been with ntl for 8 years now, and my parents have been on cable since it was first introduced, long before ntl took over things. We have both been happy with what we've got over the years.

As with any service that you pay for from a company, when things are runing smoothly and all is well, you're happy with what you're getting. As soon as there are any problems, they become the worst company in the world. I know a lot of people who use other ISP and they've all had their problems with them over the years.

I'm happy to wait another couple of months to see if ntl can sort out the problems. If things haven't improved at all by then, I'll then consider other options. My only current gripe with ntl is that why should I pay £35pm for 5Mb when other people paying £35pm and get 10Mb, just because they will not supply the hardware for me to get 10Mb. I'm not paying £50 to get something they install for new customers free of charge!!

Re: *ALL* ntl 10Mb Discussion (Part 3)

Well, we *were* on 10meg.... or should that be, NTL assumed we were, our modem, however, indicated that we were on 3meg. Taking into consideration that a lot of people were getting dialup speeds on 10 meg and knowing our modem wasn't going to cut the mustard and despite numerous attempts to convince NTL that our modem wasn't cutting it, we took the plunge yesterday and went down to 2megs unlimited.
Yes, I could've called out a tech guy, but we need a good connection here and the drop in speed was only marginal compared to what we were getting. I'm going to leave it a month and attempt to go back to 10 meg and if the modem config says it's 3meg, then we'll get someone out to fix it/install new modem. If, however, we're happy at the end of the month, we'll leave the connection at 2meg until later in the year. 10meg is fine if you can get it, not so if you can't or if your modem can't handle it. Maybe later in the year, other technical apects that need to be sorted by NTL will be resolved by then and maybe the 10meg might seem a little more stable than it seems at the moment.
Until then, it's business as usual here, albeit a little slower - but thats not a problem, it's an asset.

Re: *ALL* ntl 10Mb Discussion (Part 3)

The modem upgrade issue is what annoys me most about the whole affair.I've been with NTL broadband since the 512K days and as such I have a Terayon modem. It's not capabale of 10MB (typically I get 6 or so) and they want £50 to change the modem. Why am I being penalised for being a long-time loyal customer. This just doesn't seem fair to me. Now I realise that I've still got a faster service than I used to have, but there's still a sense of injustice.
Mind you the occasional plunges to dial-up speeds are more worrying. Happens randomly, but doing anything on the web is excruciating when it does. SPeeds typically drop to the 10-15kbps range. Pages were designed differently in the 14.4K modem days, going back to that speed with todays image/feature rich pages makes we want to tear my hair out. Hopefully things will improve.

Hello,

I'm currently on the 1Mbps package, but am considering upping to 3/10Mbps.

Before that, could anyone advise what the service is like in Cardiff? Download/upload speeds, performance... ?

Thanks.

You might get lucky or, you might end up having a nightmare and wasting days of your time trying to sort things out. Personally, if I was on 1Mb at present then, unless I'm desperate for extra speed, I would stay on 1Mb for another month or two at least too see if things get better.

It's only a joke for the people having problems. If you've read through enough posts on this board then you'll know that some/plenty of people are getting high speeds and not having problems.

I've just run another test and, lo and behold, I'm getting the max speed expected at present. I have a Samsung STB and the 5Mb package (I'm refusing to call my package 10Mb anymore!!). A couple of minutes after I did the test below, I did another one and got 4Mb. On average over the last 24 hours I've been getting approx 3.4Mb. Whilst not exactly much of an increase on the steady 3Mb I had, ntl clearly say that speeds are now up to and not constant as before. Basically I'm getting exactly what ntl say I should be getting. Unfortunately any one reasonable length download still comes along at very erratic speeds. Still, It would surprise at present if things went back to 1.5Mb later today!!

Thu, 26 Jan 2006 14:54:05 UTC

1st 512K took 765 ms = 669.3 KB/sec, approx 5087 Kbps, 5 Mbps
2nd 512K took 546 ms = 937.7 KB/sec, approx 7127 Kbps, 7 Mbps
3rd 512K took 1265 ms = 404.7 KB/sec, approx 3076 Kbps, 3 Mbps
4th 512K took 734 ms = 697.5 KB/sec, approx 5301 Kbps, 5.2 Mbps

Overall Average Speed = approx 5148 Kbps, 5.05 Mbps

Re: *ALL* ntl 10Mb Discussion (Part 3)

It's been alluded to before and it's worth restating but downloads of 512kB are just too small to get accurate figures for 10M, probably even for 3M. I mean at 5M you are looking at subsecond times. A small glitch in a router or something could have an extraordinary effect on that sort of number.

Get a better feel by downloading something substantial, multiple megabytes, from a well mirrored, well connected server. gcc from sunfreeware mirrors is around 100M and will let the connection settle and will give better figures. It will be somewhat lower if everyone does it at same time so use as an example only.

Any chance of posting a link??

I also use the test at Kbps.co.uk, and you can use a 14.75Mb file for the test. Whilst I appreciate a 512k file is somewhat small for testing 10mb, I generally get the same results here as at Kbps.co.uk. I do occasionaly try downloading large files directly after good test results and, the speed levels out at roughly the test result I got.

I appreciate what you're saying but, with the current fluctuations in speeds, I'm not prepared, or have the time, to repeatedly keep downloading 50-100Mb files. A few quick tests here every so often seems to give me a good indication of what's happening at any given time.

p.s. Cable Forum staff, any chance of a test with some larger files :D

Just done some tests.
I usually download ISO's from HEAnet in Ireland, in the past they have always come down at 1024 KB/sec but recently the speed has dropped to 530 KB/sec. As the Irish Speed Test has recently shown a similar drop in speed I put it down to ntl work in progress.

Tonight I decided to check so I downloaded the same file from 2 university sites in England, both sites downloaded at 1140 KB/sec so it would appear that the problem (for me at least) is not with ntl after all.

The Irish speedtesh has slowed down lately. The kbps speedtest page always sends enough bandwidth to test 10 mbps. You can choose to download the 14 meg file,it gives you and idea should be around 1200 kbps.

I was just reading that the Irish Speed Test has been upgraded to a later version during the past few days, that's the reason the results have changed.

Re: *ALL* ntl 10Mb Discussion (Part 3)

Well it may have changed but i just done a test and it gave me 3.89 mbps,i then done a test at another site got this:

File size transferred : 14.75 MB (15468724 bytes)
Total time taken : 12.61 seconds (12610 milliseconds)
Throughput : 1226.0 KB/sec [Kilobyte-per-second]
= 1.23 MB/sec [Megabyte-per-second]
= 9808.0 Kbps [Kilobit-per-second]
= 9.81 Mbps [Megabit-per-second]

best speedtest is probably a linux ftp mirror preferably in the uk probably on a gig connection something like this.

ftp://ftp.mirror.ac.uk/edunfs1/mirro...d-CD1.i586.iso

700meg file so if you fussy about usage dont let it finish.

Anybody here got exactly the same issue? Modem resseting after so long? There's one going on about it below but thats only for ntl home 120 users as a poster commented :Yikes:

I've looked into this a bit, Examples of how to make modem reset:

Extract a big file over SSH, while SSH is reporting what files are being extraced, Modem will reset.

Uploading work/images/psds to FTP (Which I do alot), Modem will reset...

Uploading movies (Such as demo's I have done while playing in a game with friends)

Opening about 4 FTP Clients to upload a forum (To upload faster) - Modem will reset.

Using Bit torrent, Mainly happens when there's loads of Seeds/Leechers connected...

Can't really think of many more examples, Appart from it seems to happen when uploading.

This is the site that NTL TS told me to go to (one of their own) whilst I was on the phone to them, she told me to d/load the 50mb file and see what speeds I was getting at the 50% mark... they also told me to go to www.microsoft.com to download software and let them know what speeds I got. I put links in a previous post on these forums to other speed test I have used... all giving me similar results. the best I got was around the 3.3Mb mark... they say to find out your speed in MB's take the result that you get in Kbps and times it by 8, doing this with one of the results I got... 421Kb gave me 3.3Mbits

Just done another test on that 50Mb file and its back to the normal speed, see image below... mind u it is 2:25am hope it's sorted now.. but something tells me it's because its off peak.

The unstable transfer rates on the 10Mb STB service seem to be fixed now. Still don't get good UK speedtest rates, but downloads from the US are good. Got a steady 779kb/s downloading 3D Mark 2006 (attached).

Time to order the SACM now to get the full whack :)

Just came back to the UK, where it looks like now i've been upgraded to the 10meg service.

Its extremely erratic. My speed averages out at less than 3 meg (around 2.5meg, is a good average so far). My connection spikes to 550+k-ish, but then will drop after giving me a poor average.

This is about par for the course, isn't it? :(

10 meg blows. My 3 meg used to be solid. I appreciate the "upto" bit, but its worse than before, that's not really progress?

xserve 29-01-2006 19:35

Re: *ALL* ntl 10Mb Discussion (Part 3)

My Broadband speed is dreadful since upgrade.

Dowloading a 55 meg file from apple took ages. Average download speed was 88k sec.

looking at the network activity, if was all over the place 750k, then 3.5k then 30k, then 0k then 4k then 450k then 200k then3k then 12k the 16k get the picture.

whaen all of that was averaged out it was 88k not good on a supposed up to 10 meg line. Surely the up to 10 meg caveat must wear thin when it is not as fast as the 1 meg line I previously had.

Brother on telewest 10meg service got 800k sec average with his BB.

I get reasonable results on the speed checker but a 1 meg file is not big enough to accuratly test a line that suould be 10 meg.

I think that 5meg should be the minimum acceptable speed for the "up to" service, after all what is the point in paying more for less.

Stu

I Keep popping in to see what's what. Finally got a mail shot telling me of 10MB today so thought it worth a quick call. Told CS I've a Samsung STB and wanted to enquire about 10MB. Specifically told no Sir, only UP TO 10MB ;) heh.. At £34.99 I can have it but they will definately not switch me on while I have a Samsung STB. I need a SACM and I can have one for free, but not for ages. Nowt new to tell you there then, just thought I'd tell what today's score was.

I'm in Oldham, no idea what the deal is with upgrading everyone yet, there so much going on on here about it. Sounds like I'm better off on my consistently good 2MB line for now anyhow. Ho hum.

This statement is as good as saying, "It's not our fault."

I am personally getting quite annoyed at the constant fluctuation in speeds, even after having my sacm swapped. I am going to take this up with OFCOM and then if I dont get any satisfaction with them, then I am afraid that I will be serving my notice with NTL.

My ping on UK BF2 servers on most days is 125 and is becoming quite tedious. I have no viruses and/or spyware/malware. My PC is good spec. So NTL, who is to blame?

I feel though that I will soon be installing BT back in my home.

Yeah, its just b******t.

NTL might think they can treat most of their users like muppets, but not I. I know my connection is worse now than after the upgrade, and its not my proxy/OS/router or anything else they can try and pin it on.

I have just gone down to 2meg, and I am getting basically the same speed/consistency (so not my STB then), and its much cheaper. I'm not even getting the 2meg either.

My NTL BB has always been top notch. If this continues I'll take my money elsewhere.

We'd formatted both computers here - they were squeaky clean by the time they'd been reinstalled and our usual software reinstalled, in fact, ok, we have one slow computer and one fairly fast computer.... but the problem lay with the modem, which even after calling to mention it, we gave up with getting nowhere and dropped our speed to 2meg - just because reading through here was proof enough that NTL had reached the outer limits of suXorzville and didn't look like they were heading back. Heck, we'd even gone the ethernet route to see if that would help with the speed issue - and it didn't!
When I read the statement from NTL, I laughed... it sounded so much like they wanted to wash their hands of the people with problems...

So I'm assuming then, from that, that my ambit 120, the reason why it couldn't get off the 3mb configuration, is all my fault?
and they want £50 for a replacement modem?!?!?! (they'd find a way...)
Well.. excuuuuuuuuuse me!! *pats modem, running sweetly at 2meg away on the floor*

You'd have thought the sensible approach was to sort out the customers with problems before coming out with rubbish like that practically dissing people who know their computers well and know their connection equally so.
It won't attract new customers and it's going to make a few more part company and it's possible that it could scare some others... who will unnecessarily cut down their internet usage because it'll seem as though it's taking the pressure off...
I always had the assumption that sometimes, the customer if not proven right, has at least, a valid point. And each customer should be treated as an individual... not clumped together with some finger from high pointing at them with the blame for everything....

Re: *ALL* ntl 10Mb Discussion (Part 3)

I just noticed that all their speeds are now named upto. yet do 1 & 2mb customers have these issues? I don't think so.

Nonsense

I therefore assume that if the 1 & 2mb users experience the same difficulties (which they aren't) then the same statement would apply to them.

Sorry but this won't wash and it's time for NTL to take responsibility and ownership for their problems, instead of blaming other things like their customers for a kick off. This is extremely poor customer service and satisfaction.

After the response from a user on this board, I will now officially complain to NTL and then pursue it to OFCOM if needs be.

Sorry if this has been a bit of a rant but I want a service that runs efficiently (albeit upto 10mb) and that is also reliable.

Apologies if this comment has been echoed. It may also be a good idea to start an online petition and/or get the good guys at nthellworld.com involved.

I will complain and your advice/opinion is greatfuly appreciated. My company (a massive UK mobile telecommunications company) would not dream of making a press release like that. The more I read that statement the more it makes my blood boil.

Anyway I am starting to sound like a broken record and I dont wish to p*ss people off on this great forum. I am off to play BF2. (ping permitting);)

I reset my modem 4 times earlier been on 3 different upstream channels but its all saturation.

Channel 6 - I am on now best of the 3, average 10ms above what it should be spikes to 70-90ms
Channel 3 - Spikes to 200+ms very bad, upload only 17kB/sec
Channel 5 - Old channel, was averaging 500ms upload only 3kB/sec download not much better.

I reformatted my PC and that improved my '10meg' stb connection back up to the 3meg(ish) speeds that I was getting before the 10meg upgrade :disturbd:
I'm getting a bit hacked off about paying top dollar for something that I'm nowhere near getting so I called CS to implement the suggestion that 2 ntl engineers made a couple of weeks ago when they were here trying to figure out what was wrong--get a SACM.
Actually I phoned CS who told me that they couldn't order me a SACM and that I had to phone BB tech support......which I did.....they agreed that I should try a SACM and said that they would put me through to the correct dept, which they did--CS!:disturbd:
CS then tried to charge me £50 to swap to a SACM but I politely stuck to my guns, requesting that he speak to someone 'higher up'......I am now awaiting a free SACM install on Fri 10th Feb :D

My question for you all........which SACM should I hopefully be getting?

Bit of an update to my previous post about not getting 10mb download, well Ntl said as i was connected via usb this would reduce the speed. So i thought what the hell lets take out all the network settings and reboot my ntl 250 modem, connect it via ethernet... and what do you know it is giving a constant 9 to 10 mb download rate, using some of the website speed checker gives a few erratic results but using dan ewells test prog it stays solid. The url for his site is http://www.broadbandspeedtest.net...

What i am gonna do is just reset everything back to usb just to check it is still slower and that rebooting the modem hasnt sorted all of it out. Will update my results soon. Fidds

---------- Post added at 18:51 ---------- Previous post was at 18:34 ----------

Update...

Well i just set everything back as it was with usb and i am getting max 3.8mb on all programs, looks like Ntl are givimg me the right info, just so you know the usb is plugged into a usb 2.0 socket... so looks like i need to make the switch to ethernet.

Anyone able to help me with a question...?

I have one ethernet in my machince but have a spare one i can intall, if i install the second one can i bridge the connection so i can use the second one for my Xbox 360?

Thanks All, Fidds

Yep you certainly can.

For original Xbox, won't be that different if at all for the 360.

I have just gone down to 2meg, and I am getting basically the same speed/consistency (so not my STB then), and its much cheaper. I'm not even getting the 2meg either.

My NTL BB has always been top notch. If this continues I'll take my money elsewhere.

Same with me..I degraded to 2mb and i was getting 500k speed at peak times and it also was taking me offline every so often this past week or so has been worser than ever,I've been a customer to NTL for 6 years and i'm now going to part ways with NTHELL and go to ADSL.

Judging by the Service Status page (at 1.30pm) there are a lot of people that cannot connect today. My email is currenltly action and my overall connection keeps dropping out for a minute or two.

mmmmmm, planned maintenance on Thusday morning here: Coventry, Burnley, Hemel Hempstead, Hitchin, Kempstone, Luton, Stevenage, Locks Heath, Warrington, Cosham, Colchester, Northfields, Clifton, Swindon, and surrounding areas.

Current connection problem areas: Luton, North Beds, Biggleswade, Chesunt, Dunstable, Hatfield, Hemel Hempstead, and Ware areas. Also, Watford, Aylesbury, Amersham and surrounding areas.

Ever get the feeling someone hit the wrong button when doing the planned maibtenance :D

Looking at the Planned Maintenance for this week, ntl seem to have started in the north of the UK and are working their way down south week by week. Once everything is done then maybe we'll all have connections working at proper speeds ;)

I believe that if you want to change to an ntl:250 which can support the full 10meg there is a £50 charge for doing so.

ntl have a lot of customers who are in rented accomodation with ntl pre fitted and these customers usually cannot switch telco companies. So I know in that circumstance it isnt the case of leaving. However I agree yeah if speeds are so low that there is no benefit over 24.99 then downgrade. But this shouldnt be happening, you not robbing my bandwidth as most of the issues are locallised issues, and the peering issues are ntl's fault not the customer's.

Re: *ALL* ntl 10Mb Discussion (Part 3)

The reason for my post. I've finally had sucess with convincing ntl to install a cable modem for free!!!:) I called them today to change from up to 10Mb to the 2mb package. Without any discussions or asking why, they just changed it there and then. I then asked how to go about closing my account. The response, the explanation of 30 days notice etc (still not looking good at this point). I then explained that it would take me a while to sort out getting my BT line reconnected and having sky installed, not to mention finding another isp.

At this point the person finally asked why I was going to close my ntl account. After this the person recommended I contact their customer retention team. I asked them if they could put me through to them there and then and they said yes. I also asked them to explain briefly to them why they were putting me through. I was put on hold and less than a minute later the person was back on the phone and told that ntl always do what they can to keep their customers (they said this with a straight voice as well, I nearly started laughing myself ;) ) and they were now happy to install the modem without the fee. I get transferred to the retention team and arrange to have the modem installed, which will be this Friday as well!!!

I was even happy enough to get put back on 10Mb straight away. Still, for the 10 minutes I was on 2Mb I have to say I had a wonderfully stable and solid 2Mb connection with the speed constant :D

It's just a shame that it took me advising I will be closing my account before they were prepared to do it for free :(

Anyway, all sorted now. You can all expect to hear from me again on Friday evening when I start asking how to get the modem working properly;)

It'll be research and development of a 100mb product most likely the use of the word 'trial' has exagerated it and it's more a 'test'. a pointless product at the moment but you need to be prepared for the future or get left behind.

my symptons are different now. pings arent fluctuating as much and latency and upload are both good, but download speeds continue to plummet in the evenings, last night i was getting a whopping 0.5mbit. Is this a sign of downstream saturation or will it still be upstream saturation or possible shaping to deal with ubr overload? Of course right now at 4am without any reboots etc. my speeds shot back up.

Threating to cancel my TV, phone and broadband worked for, where as no other lesser threats did. If you do end up going down this route then make sure your put through to ntl's Customer Retention Dept, they seem to have the authority to authorise a free install/upgrade on the spot.

I get a modem installed today in theory. However, I wouldn't be surprised if I get a phone call at 5.30pm from the engineer telling me that they've got a puncture and will have to reschudule for another day. Happened twice already in the past 3 years when I've been waiting for an Engineer to come out. i just hope things have improved.
