Yeah let's all use illegal services and not pay at all, that way there'll be no money for new movies and shows fantastic idea.

You can blame Netflix for that in my case and other streaming services deciding they want a piece of the streaming action.

I currently sub to Netflix and Amazon Prime but with shows getting removed and placed on a rival service that could change.

Be great to have a all in one service tbh, i just get annoyed with seeing illegal services advertised on forums it's how they get shut down mate.

That's just the sort of service that the DTC streamers are trying to avoid. Cut out the middleman and keep all of the profit for themselves. It's going to be interesting to see how viable it will be as the market becomes saturated with streamers competing for customers.

It was £6 a few months ago, after subbing I don't think I will bother again.

Your post just reminded me to cancel before it got renewed.

The Times web site is reporting that Amazon Prime will step away from televising tennis in the UK at the end of 2023.

The report say the digital giant is not in the running for the fresh round of ATP and WTA rights.

Report say Sky Sports (soon to confirm a US Open deal) and unnamed broadcasters are said to be interested.

Thanks for posting this.

I think it confrms what most of us know already - Amazon is not going all-in for sports rights, it's taking an opportunistic approach.

It will be interesting to see if Viaplay outbids Amazon for a small Premier League rights package when they come up for renewal.

I see that Netflix has made a return to growth. What does it put this down to? Releasing its popular series on a weekly basis so users maintain their subscriptions instead of binge-watching and then pausing the subscription.

Who would have believed such a well-established model could work? :D

Mum and Dad watching Netflix on home wifi Child 1 watching in the park on mobile data, Child 2 round friends house on their wifi. 3 IP Addresses there all one household.

TBH on my Turkish Account a 25% increase will take me up to about £5.75 for top tier anyway so no big deal

It could be demonstrated that one is on a fixed network (parents) and that child 1 is using a mobile network.

I expect child 2’s usage would not be permitted under revised terms and conditions to accommodate any change.

An alternative would be for viewing outside “home” to be restricted to mobile devices. It wouldn’t solve the issue but it’d certainly have an impact. Spotify t&cs for example can require users to log in from home to verify their connection from time to time. Something not so easy on a 55 inch smart TV.

Re: Streaming services news, offers and general chit chat

I’d imagine devices and IPs will be used , ie use your TV’s at home on your primary IP and then after that only mobile and tablet devices allowed on other IPs.

It will be a tough one to police.

Apologies jfman only just read your post and agree with it all especially the last paragraph.

Bit more info here

Chris 20-10-2022 16:29

Re: Streaming services news, offers and general chit chat

A solution that mostly solves the problem will be enough though. Those with the motivation to evade IP or device detection are likely to evade anything else they implement, or else just go and get what they want via newsgroups or torrents. That’s unavoidable. But most families simply sharing a password across generations are unlikely to have the expertise or the motivation and (if granddad likes it enough) will probably decide the cost of the base subscription isn’t that bad after all.

jfman 20-10-2022 19:11

Re: Streaming services news, offers and general chit chat

Agree with mm11 in that it’d be difficult to police, but also Chris that a system that partially solves the issue but not fully is a suitable solution. If 90% of the population believe it works, half of the outstanding find workarounds too complex it leaves just 5% exploiting the system.

There’s been gaping holes in (some) “multiroom” systems for years. At the more complex end not really exploited or understood by the masses. Streaming services have left the door open but it wouldn’t be too hard to identify low hanging fruit within Netflix accounts (a Virgin box at one location and a Sky box in another both with heavy usage). Publicity that this being policed along with gentle emails to suspected offenders, or having devices verify themselves on home wi-fi and suddenly this has gone from the norm to the exception.

Got an email this morning advertising Netflix’s new “profile transfer” feature, which allows you to split any user profile in your Netflix membership account out to a new account.

Ostensibly useful when kids grow up and leave home (or in the event of relationship breakdown), this would of course also help oil the wheels if/when they ban account sharing …

I don’t doubt it but when you are up against so many other services and you are pricing at £6.99 you better have a decent slate of future originals and a hefty back catalogue.

The problem with this increase for the TV service is that it pushes it nearer the price of Disney + and Prime video both of which have vastly greater back catalogues and produce more new originals a year.

Channel 4 transforms brand to help viewers navigate crowded digital world
Quote:

Channel 4 today announced that from next year it will bring all its channels and services under one ‘Channel 4’ brand to help audiences better navigate the abundance of choice in the digital world and find their favourite Channel 4 shows wherever and whenever they choose to watch content.

‘All 4’ will change to ‘Channel 4’ as Channel 4 becomes the first UK broadcaster to adopt one brand identity across its digital and linear channels as audiences increasingly no longer distinguish between digital and linear content. Channel 4’s entire portfolio of channels will also align with the ‘Channel 4’ brand.

The brand transformation follows Channel 4’s commitment to prioritise digital growth, place viewers at the heart of its decision-making and renew its relationship with young audiences as part of its Future4 strategy launched two years ago.

As I understand it, your account can only support 360 or V6, not a combination of both.

Correct. They would have to all be converted (and technicians can't do that unless they are specifically booked to do it)

Ah cheers both! can we have 3 v6 boxes updated to the 360 box? or would it be one v6 with 360 software and 2 of those odd mini boxes? i dont fancy sharing my storage with my mum and sister haha.

Is the mini box good to avoid lots of wires though? my mum is elderly but doesn't want a box put in her bedroom (even though i think itll be a good idea to future proof...) as she doesn't want tons of white wires going through into her room. the engineer today said it would need wires going through the boxroom, under the carpet, drill a little hole into her wall and then around the door. mum doesn't like wires haha

Re: Streaming services news, offers and general chit chat

You would have all three boxes converted.

A Minibox has the same wires as a recordable box. (There's a lot of confusion with the Stream box, which doesn't have a co-ax connection, but you can't have one of those if you've already got cable TV)

are the pros for the 360 software now more than the cons ? i knew it was missing a lot

I see that Lionsgate (Starzplay) is reducing its streaming activities. It is leaving France, Germany, Italy, Spain, Benelux, the Nordics and Japan.

It will remain in the UK, North America and Latin America.

Could we be getting to streaming saturation point?

Nail on the head, Andrew. Come 2023 I believe we will see the streaming landscape begin to change.

I think of these providers will need to join forces to lower the number of possible subscriptions. There are just far to many with the good content spread between them. This imo promotes piracy as people will want to watch stuff from all of them but can in no way afford all the subs

Doesn't look like it , the latter AMC+ looks likely to launch in the UK at some point.

Only on certain devices at the moment I believe my Firestick hasn’t had the app yet it’s still ITV Hub.

My experience on Roku was that the old tile was displayed but clicking on it went into the itvX app. After a short while, the tile updated to the yellow itvX format.

Although ITV Hub was withdrawn from Humax 4000 / 5000 and Freesat boxes a couple of months ago, so won't be getting itvX. A tad worrying that apps are already being withdrawn from boxes (and TVs) from around 2018. I'm not sure what it says about the Freeview Play spec. when models start to become obsolete within 4 years. Humax are still selling the FVP-5000T.

The Aura is android tv.

I know it is Android TV, probably a good thing as Humax doesn't have a good history of supporting its apps or devices for very long.

Paramount+ is currently 50% off for a 12 month subscription at £34.95,
I believe this offer lasts until Nov 28th

Yeah they have a very poor record with supporting apps, make fantastic boxes but useless at supporting apps.

Don't forget BBC iPlayer coverage of the World Cup is in UHD/HLG - but only 2.0 audio.
Regular BBC linear is HD with 5.1 audio.
ITV coverage - usual HD and 2.0 tops - at least they have colour.

Itshim 21-11-2022 19:01

Disney+

Watch out for fireworks at Disney + Mr Inger has two years to turn it around my guess is ESPN and Hulu ( which they may have to buy out from Comcast) are in the firing line , along with price rises ,sign up for the longest deal you can get , if you want to save money over the next year or so. The start of the death of the streamers :erm: going to Walt Disney world for a seasonal break with family. :D
