God! Shopping channels! Is that the best we can be looking forward to?

What I am interested in is what additional on demand content we will be getting from Sky next year. That may or may not be quite significant.

When you take away that well known Sky channel that only broadcast on Sky what other channel do YOU want Virgin to go after?

I would love Virgin to go after MTV CLASSIC other than that we cant think of any channel we want.

The shopping channels either directly or indirectly benefit everyone. The housebound find them useful and, as they pay VM to be on the platform, they provide extra revenue to help keep prices down (yeah, right!) or to invest in new services/content, which could possibly even be VOD content ;)

Proof that the physical broadcast of television relies upon very few viewers.

Well, clearly, the sales arising from the broadcast of these channels makes it worthwhile.

No content rights to worry about either.

Isn’t this weekend the final weekend of itvs contract with la Liga? So if it’s going to continue la Liga need to strike a deal sometime this week I’d imagine?

I have a horrible feeling it’ll either go to eleven sport (a cheaper rate for them or something and they’ll say they originally paid more as they thought they’d have 3pm games) or it’ll go to premier sports .

Any guesses people?

While this is true, but it's also a double edged sword as it wastes capacity that could otherwise be used for more "attention grabbing" and "subscriber attracting" channels, it also gives the illusion that there's more (quality) channels.

Article written by my good friend NickALive, makes a change from Peppa Pig. Paw Patrol is very popular though, so such a decision to turn Nick Jr. Too into a Paw Patrol Pop-Up channel is understandable.

I think that the only channel that VM now doesn't have that would be attention & subscriber grabbing would be Sky Atlantic. Even AMC & MTV Classics are pretty niche channels.

A shortage of capacity preventing the launch of new channels is no longer an issue. Despite the total capacity being reduced, VM are taking steps to make more efficient use of the capacity that they have left e.g. changing over to MPEG4, closing duplicate SD channels, squeezing more channels into each transponder etc.

I take your point about the shopping channels being used to beef up the total amount of channels available.

Discovery are certainly demoting Good Food if not, they shunted it right to the end of the main entertainment section of the Sky EPG recently and bumped around 5 channels up one slot in turn to the vacated slot in front of it.

Don't think so no i think the current deal would still be binding, they could negotiate a better/new deal though if they wish.

AMC is only available to a relatively small percentage of viewers but I would hardly describe it as a niche channel. Have you looked at their schedules? Tomorrow, for example, they are screening Mad Men, Law and Order, The Road (2009 thriller), Push (2006 thriller), NOS4A2 (new series), Hap and Leonard, Jungle (2017 adventure film) and Zoom In.

I wouldn't describe any of that programming as designed for a niche audience, Richard.

Don't start all that again.

A new (Government funded?) FTA channel to teach immigrants English is to start:

If it does turn out to be Government funded, i'm assuming that it will be made available across all platforms.

It will show programmes such as Only Fools & Horses, Midsommer Murders and Fawlty Towers and aim to 'help the 844,000 people – 1.6% of the population – living in the UK who speak little or no English. At around £2million a year, it would prove a “cost-effective” way of teaching people who can’t afford lessons or access daytime classes'.

Fair enough, I still can't understand why it's still only on BT TV though. I don't think that AMC would usually be a deciding factor when choosing pay TV providers and would have thought that AMC wouldn't be happy at their shows receiving such limited exposure.

Perhaps they're just happy to take the money for exclusivity and can then resell their content to other channels for their customers who won't have seen it.

It's a shame it's only on BT, but I suppose BT are paying a considerable premium for this and are running this at a loss as their USP.

FT reports that state-owned China Global Television Network will be launching in the UK at the end of September. Platforms are not stated but the launch has been in the offing for a long time pending visas so the platform deals could already be in place.
Quote:

The broadcaster has about 100 journalists in London, who will from late September be expected to produce around one hour of programmes for its global 24-hour channel. The channel currently broadcasts 13 hours of content from Beijing, seven from Washington and four from Nairobi each day. A tech programme and a weekend talk show will be among the first programmes produced by CGTN Europe. One person briefed on its plans said production would be expanded in October and again in early 2020.

Discovery channels are as following on Freeview:

Of course, it should be mentioned that Sky's negotiations with VM to invest in its new network may increase the likelihood of a VM getting a certain Sky channel. ;) And I'm not talking about a shopping channel. :D

Given Quest Red is their 3rd highest rating FTA channel and Really their 2nd I can't see them axing Quest Red, I believe the shows are different even if the genre is the same.

I added Good Food below even though it's a Pay channel, as an interesting comparison.

Last month available's BARB ratings (July)
Good Food 0.10
Food Network 0.23
Home 0.27
DMAX 0.43
Quest Red 0.54
Really 0.68
Quest 0.91

Seeking to monetise your investment isn't greed. The cable network isn't a public good.

Letting Sky on wouldn't open the door to others - it'd be a commercial agreement like any other.

According to the September Channel Guide, Amazon Prime Video (228) and Virgin TV Ultra HD (205) are swapping EPG positions.

Amazon Prime Video: 228 > 205
Virgin TV Ultra HD: 205 > 228

The other Virgin TV Ultra HD on 999 is no longer listed so may be getting removed.

Thankyou.

I’m not sure it is expensive for either to be fair.

While the streamers are falling over themselves to offer £7.99 TV packages with precarious business models gigabit capable internet is going to be at a hefty price premium for years to come given the high initial cost of FTTP.

Sky bundling Virgin internet as opposed to an openreach product is probably better news for both.

Most people tend to think that Sky is the best for TV and VM the best for BB. If Sky can offer the best of both worlds, I think that Sky will be the winner and VM will be the loser.

Virgin could gain, indirectly via the wholesale deal, millions of profitable internet customers.

Would they lose millions of (not so profitable) TV customers to Sky? I’m sceptical. Someone could equally have Sky TV and Virgin retail broadband now if they felt so inclined.

Because Sky will be able to offer their TV service as well as VM broadband.

True and some people do have both, but I think that it usually works out more expensive as Sky and VM won't offer triple play discounts.

I suppose VM must have taken into account the profit from wholesaling their broadband as well as the potential loss of direct TV customers (who will probably cancel phone/BB/TV) and decided that it's still worth doing this.

Re: Coming Soon to Virgin TV (2019)

Sky won’t be able to discount it to the extent they can with the regulated price of Openreach products, and it’ll likely be more expensive than triple play Virgin anyway. At the right price point it’s a huge win for both parties in slightly different ways.

It’d compete with high cost FTTP products elsewhere in the market.

Well, City Fibre are currently undercutting VM for my speed of 200 Mbps, so I don't know:

You admit in your own post that the City Fibre product doesn’t include a landline. Nor are they in a position to bundle a TV package the way both Sky and Virgin can.

It would be cheaper for someone who just wants broadband though. I'm surprised that City Fibre aren't offering TV (everyone seems to be doing it these days), though I can understand why they might not want to bother with the dying landline as a new operator- now that would be real competition for Virgin Media.

One minute the concern is TV customers, the next broadband only? I’m not sure that’s a coherent strand. Virgin can market it’s product suitably against Cityfibre or anyone else in due course.

Zen isn't new it's been around for a very long time, i asked them about tv they said point blank "we have no plans for a tv service"

Proof of Good Food content being put on Food Network when Good Food closes has now appeared on the EPG. Great British Bake Off, Rick Stein, James Martin and other British well known names are all showing in amongst the usual Food Network staples of Diners, Drive-ins & Dives.

Maybe they'll ask for Food Network to get one of the freed up channel numbers? 278 would be a decent leap frog from 291, and there's space below it for the +1 if they wanted to bring a new channel to VM, or for sister channel Travel Channel to move up also.

However most of the channels they would be leap frogging are their Pay channels, so they may not want to.

I can't see VM moving all those channels out of Factual and still keep a Factual category. Sky getting rid of their Documentaries category has make their EPG awful to find anything on, there's no logic to it. I hope VM don't copy it in that respect.

BT Sport WSL 4K pop-up channel now on 532. It will broadcast a match tomorrow and then disappear. HD version on channel 100 at same time.

Thanks to JJ20X on Forumbox for noticing. I just checked and confirmed on EPG.

I believe this might happen multiple times for other WSL matches.
