There still lots of SD only boxes.

Which box was that one?

As far as I know, HD channels haven't gone to MPEG4 yet.

And on TiVo at least the space used is in percentage and GB, not hours.

Still have V+ boxes. I'll see if it happens again with other recordings. The box is normally spot on with SD usage.

It could be that Talking Pictures has a low SD bitrate due to some of the films they show not needing a lot. Not seen it myself so not sure on that though.

Meanwhile, Brit Asia TV has now been added to the EPG on channel 840.

Two days early too!

I see what you mean, I'd prefer True Crime to a timeshift of an existing channel, useful as they are. Wonder when the Sony carriage deal is up?

They haven't, it's still only used for on demand streams.

It is in hours on "System Info" on the Tivo, and not very accurate.

The average bitrate, according to www.digitalbitrate.com is pretty low. 5USA, on the same transport stream, shows a significantly higher average bitrate.

Stats for Talking Pictures at: http://www.digitalbitrate.com/dtv.ph...&sec=0&lang=en

TiVo will have chosen a certain bit rate to use as the basis of the hours calculation. So some channels will use less than that - not sure if some use more.

I don't think TiVo has ever published what bitrate they assume for HD and SD channel bitrates, but there are some posts around for the US TiVo boxes. Whether it's the same or different for other TiVo based boxes I'm not sure.

The bit of TiVo I was talking about is if you press OK on an individual recording to get the the full screen show information, and then press Info to bring up the recording information. At the bottom is detail about how much the recording physically takes up on the hard disk

That's a significant change to the platform, after being mooted for several years. When did that happen?

VM are changing over to MPEG4, just as others are moving onto h.265...

Virgin Media can only change to that which it boxes support. Considering Virgin Media's older TiVo box came out before h.265 was even a standard, then it can't support it!

The addition of more Asian channels is the only recent comment I've seen from VM.

Indeed, it does seem as if we all need to learn Hindi, Russian etc to enjoy some of VM's latest additions.

I have been given scan data for the end of June, which shows 4 new cryptically named additions (on 4 networks used by VM for internal testing):

TSID 8, SID 809, Service Name: InternalASD
TSID 9, SID 915, Service Name: InternalBSD
TSID 23, SID 2303, Service Name: InternalAHD
TSID 35, SID 3503, Service Name: InternalBHD

Indications are that these channels will be in the Sky Sports packs and in the Sports section of the EPG on channels 519, 520, 509 and 510 respectively. The EPG programme information states "Coming Soon".

Do you think that these will be extra streams for Wimbledon?

Maybe this is something to do with the Sky Sports shake up??

The latter I would think. The EPG channel numbers and inclusion of Sky Sports pack codes give more of a clue than the cryptic channel names.

Agree with you there.

From what I've seen the new channel lineup will be along the lines of Sky Sports Football 1, Sky Sports Football 2, Sky Sports Golf, Sky Sports Cricket, Sky Sports Arena, Sky Sports Action, Sky Sports Main Event, Sky Sports F1, Sky Sports Mix and Sky Sports News.

Sky need to launch 2 new channels to accommodate their changes. It looks like the channels that are testing are the SD and HD versions of the new channels.

Looks like this will be taking place soon. Hope we get some official news and the new pricing structure this week.

I wonder how it will work out for those who already have sky sports channels, or are about to sub to them?

Presumably they will all continue on the full Sports pack unless they inform their TV provider otherwise once the changes are announced.

That's what I thought. Then I guess if you want to opt for just one of the packs you will start a new 12 month contract? Win win for sky and virgin 'eh!

It didn't seem to go too well at the last attempt, with the tests having an initial provisional EPG channel allocation of 215. Further channels arrived on VM, taking the 215 slot, Viceland being shunted to channel 990 and subsequently removed. It's not a good sign when a prospective channel is carrying video / audio "tests" across the network and is subsequently removed.

I'm not sure that seeking carriage on extra platforms is a good way of dealing with low audience figures. The probability is that audience figures would continue to be low, but with additional carriage costs. It might be better to concentrate on audience research and improving the audience figures before looking at expansion.

The answer really lies in the quality of the content. Produce rubbish, and you will get low audiences because the mass audience is more intelligent than that.

I wonder why VM go to the trouble of setting up channels that never make it to the EPG??

The only things that I can think of are that, should carriage negotiations be successful, the additional of the channel is ready to go, or to demonstrate to the broadcaster during negotiations that they are technically able to carry their channel with quality audio & video.

I don't know about demonstrating quality to the broadcaster, that could be demonstrated with other channels. It seems sensible to get everything up and running in the background as negotiations proceed, if only to check for and eliminate any problems before going live to VM customers.

I suppose the conclusion here is that not all negotiations have a successful outcome and some of the channels running in the background won't make it to the wider network.

It's a wide genre. Crime based reality tv shows should, arguably, have more to do with "reality" than the scripted drama shows that seem to be pandemic within the genre.

I don't see how they would need to "test" that on internal networks. A re-brand or, for that matter, changing the EPG slot of an existing channel is relatively simple matter of issuing a new version of the Service Description Table with updated details at the time of the change.

The cryptically named channels have the same "pack" codes as Sky Sports 3, 4, 5 & F1. Sky Sports 1 and 2 each have a unique (different) pack code. At the Races has pack codes for the M, More, Mix, M+, Fun and Full House packs. So no obvious links between the newly added channels and At the Races.

The final names aren't really important. For all we know, Sky might not have reached a final decision on the names at this point. In any event, we know that temporary re-brands are quite popular with Sky branded channels. It could be that after launching a new sports channel, Sky could potentially re-brand it as, say, Sky Tiddlywinks the following month.

As with any re-brand, it only takes a few small adjustments to the SDT. There is no reason why the "internal" channels cannot be renamed at the same point as other channels in the group.

Quote:

Indeed, then again, it is possible that certain prospective channel names were leaked to the press to see how the general public reacted to the names and the changes. Something probably better discussed in a different thread.

There is a good chance if something is happening it'll happen before 16th September.

16th September is when their first ever PPV show takes place. No details of how the PPV will work, how much it will cost or which platforms it will be available have been released yet.

I suspect they will want it on as many platforms as possible as they plan to do around 3 or 4 PPV events in 2018.

It's possible a deal could be done to have Boxnation added to the XL package, at a very reasonable rate for Virgin Media, in return for Boxnation PPV being added as a channel / an app that features on TiVo and V6. It's clear their deal with BT has provided financial stability to the channel. They now seem keen to explore as many revenue streams as possible.

Following their deal with BT, Boxnation signed a deal to have the channel included in the Eir Sport pack in Ireland:

They could, but I think that it would reflect better on VM if they were able to demonstrate the actual channel under negotiation to the client, especially as there are different distribution methods in use.

Up to a point but ultimately, the quality will be down to whoever the broadcaster is using for playout and how much the broadcaster is prepared to pay. Many broadcasters seem less concerned about quality. They appear to give priority to squeezing in low res. / low bitrate channels in order to get a cheap carriage deal (on all platforms).

That's right OB, SD isn't allowed in my house either. I'm sure the TV works even harder to try and make the SD picture look decent haha.

I'm trying to teach the Mrs to watch UHD from Netflix and Amazon where possible lol. I'll get there one day :D

Den can get ready to do the Lambada sources say 2 Spanish channels are launching on VM in the next quarter.
Here at Theone HQ we think these if they launch will be part of the worldbox service.

If one of those is Star TVE HD, then that's already happened. It replaced Made in Spain on the 15th June in the Spanish Worldbox pack

Nor do I, but given the channels that are on SD only, we're not missing much.

The only programme I tend to watch in SD is the regional news on BBC1 after News at 10, although I did make an exception for the Harley and the Davidson series on the Turbo channel!

Every year though this so called consumer show has the same companies on it aka vm, bt, sky etc i bet most of those who are writing in to watchdog are most likely on wrong package for their household size or haven't set up their router correctly lol.

You know, I think there should be a seperate thread for all these ridiculous name changes on the Sky Cinema channels. After all, they are not new channels, they are just our regular channels with different themes for fixed periods.

Let's face it, these temporary re-brands are just marketing opportunities. The temporary names seem to be repeated in cycles so there's nothing really new about them. I would agree, these changes would be better kept in their own thread.

I think vm are full of crap tbh it's the same old excuse with them "we wanted to do this but the big bad sky dog said no." no doubt vm will go crying to ofcom soon.
If vm want content it's high time they started to bid for it, it might put a rocket up sky and bts backside too if they did.

When I saw that the "internal" channels were testing, they only had codes for existing Sky Sports packs. Because of the nature of the additions, I didn't consider the channels names (obviously), the EPG slots or the Sky Sports pack codes to be final. I'm not sure if anything has changed since then. We now know the actual names and EPG slots, maybe there will be new pack codes added at some point...

think it just means can get all in one combined Packard not that you have have to take all them

When VM say in 'one combined package' how can they. When sky will have separate channels, which you WILL have to pay for.

The biggest problem is that VM customers are paying more and more for channels, yet when channels come along. The answer is no 'we will give our customers the best of entertainment possible.

If that's the case then why isn't SA on the network.

VM this morning has confirmed on its Community Forum:

Quote:

To clarify: at this time Virgin Media is not offering the Sky Sports channels on a standalone basis.
We will continue to offer all of the Sky Sports channels in one combined package.
As previously stated, when taken with our Full House pack we are the only provider where you can get all of the sport on BT Sport and Sky Sports in one package.

So a case of carrying on as normal and checking customer reaction before considering the new, slimmed down, Sky Sports packs. I'm not convinced that the marketing mantra about offering all sports channels in a single package will carry much weight with all customers. If a customer wants fewer sports channels for less money, VM simply won't be meeting their needs.

On another note, the launch of KMTV, the local TV channel for the Maidstone and Tonbridge area, saw the channel leaving the Network Information Table on VM's Code Download Test (Portsmouth) network, being added to the Network Information Table on Basildon 1, 2, 3, 4, Crawley and Ashford customer facing networks. So a fairly wide coverage area for this one.

Bike has stopped broadcasting on satellite due to "technical issues", as a result VM are showing a temporarily unavailable slate.

Likely their licence covers all the Freeview transmitters with available interleaved space in Kent. If I remember right that will be Bluebell Hill for the medway towns (which are covered by the Basildon headend on VM), Reigate & Tunbridge Wells (Crawley). The Ashford headend covers the remaining areas of Kent that have any cable services at all (Ashford, Folkstone & Dover about sums it up)

Technically the Freeview service covers Maidstone & Tonbridge with a highly directional, low power signal. Not unusual really for these local channels. VM coverage appears to be relatively good for KMTV. I was in Kent over the weekend and Monday and had no reception of KMTV on Freeview, no big loss apparently.

My point about the fairly wide coverage was in comparison with the likes of Made in Leeds, which covers a somewhat wider area than Leeds on Freeview but VM doesn't make this one available on adjacent networks, only to Leeds.
