So far, I've updated all the kit in our house to Windows 10 without any issues. After each install has been licensed in the MS Cloud, I've then wiped the installs and done a fresh install. Accounts are then all set as local, i.e. not logging in with MS Credentials etc. and set as user accounts, not administrative. I never let any of my family log in with Admin, that's restricted for software installs etc. as and when required. I hold the password :) So far, no issues what so ever. |

You can download http://8gadgetpack.net/ which gives you access to all the gadgets for Windows 10 you previously had before MS in their wisdom removed them

Finally, there is the problem of perception. People may perceive gadgets as safe, as they generally only display some information, and have limited functionality otherwise. The computer industry has also spent a lot of time educating people not to open Exe files from unknown sources, while largely ignoring other forms of executables (such as gadgets). Not that the education, even for Exe files, has been entirely successful. I've still seen many computers where someone has tried to watch a dodgy streaming movie, been told they need to download a plug in to view it, then stupidly downloaded and run the plug in from the link the message gives them. |

My partner updated the drivers this morning and the option to put the computer to sleep is not there anymore once she restarted the computer after the driver updates and she has since restarted it several more times and there is still no option to put the computer to sleep on the computer.
Any help would be welcomed please. |

I only ever shut down my laptop with Windows 10.
If I use Sleep or Hibernate, you don't get the Bitlocker protection, as the drive is not locked at this point. Not sure if this is normal or not, but that's why I always shut down. Besides with an SSD the boot time to the Logon screen is fairly rapid ... :) |

It seems to have worked itself out now after a couple more restarts but thanks nevertheless.

Going to incur someone's wrath here, but .....
I've updated 5 laptops and 1 PC without any problems. A mix of Acer, Medion, Fujitsu and eMachines. Granted, all of them were upgraded, and then wiped and a clean install done afterwards. Still, I can't fault the Win10 installations on any of them. Maybe I've just been lucky. |

Re: [Update] Windows 10 Discussion
mine has just done that (preview build machine) I think it's done that before, in my experience sometimes it fails to get the next preview build and install it automatically, so it does that. sometimes clearing up enough space on c fixes it, but what i've done before is dl the iso of the most recent build from
https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/soft...iderpreviewiso 14366 is latest, just done start run winver on my machine and it says 14361.0 I'm a little behind, you're way behind so I'l dl the iso, mount it, then run the setup from inside windows and it will update, bit of a palava, but it works. btw, my laptop with retail version is on 10586.420 |

Windows 10 may still be free if you meet certain accessibility criteria.
My view would be that it should remain free for any edition not offered the upgrade, i.e. those on shelf in shop never switched on. But anyone one declined offer is now out of luck (or fortunate). |

I stayed with w7.I am of the"if it ain't broke don't fix it"brigade. I just do very general browsing so do not need any"improvements"w10 may have offered.Too many things these days are offered as"newest and the best ever"when all they really are is the same thing dressed in new clothes. Can someone tell if all the items microsoft downloaded to my computer in preperation for me "upgrading"to w10,are they still on my computer, or has microsoft removed them along with the w10 upgrade box.

Re: [Update] Windows 10 Discussion
I have updated one HP desktop and one Acer laptop. Only found two problems. The first affects both PCs. Before when W10 started it displayed my Microsoft account name and the picture that goes with it. Now it doesnt display the picture but if I signout and then signin it does.
With the Acer it somehow lost the key to start Kaspersky AV but on the HP it was fine. Any suggestions on the picture problem will be gratefully received. |
Re: [Update] Windows 10 Discussion
My laptop updated yesterday to Version 1607 Build 14393.10
Since then I've noticed a small but rather welcome reduction in both CPU and memory use. CPU was running at around 12% idle now it's only 4%(ish) it's the same with memory, down from 1.8Gb to 1.4Gb. Resulting in my temps dropping on idle by around 5c or more. Kinda nice! Anyone else seeing the same results after the update ? |

Yesterday i updated my Windows 10 laptop and problems started
on Restart all ok until i opened a www window immeadiatly the warning aout open file security do you want to do this . Happened on Every Link really annoying and i followed advice on interent setting to cure this it Does not . Note This happens on WIN7 As well only way to stop it was to Roll back to last point .I think this in update below Cumulative Security Update for Internet Explorer 11 for Windows 7 for x64-based Systems (KB3185319) was the one on win 7 that caused this. Similar one on win 10 |

Re: [Update] Windows 10 Discussion
Still wishing I could use 7. This new update is taking the pee. Doing both rigs at the same time, the one in the sig is running 2 SSD's with the OS on one. The other is just running a 2TB HDD, seems to be no difference in how long its taking.
If anyone's wondering, the only reason I have windows 10 is because 'good guy' Microsoft made it a requirement for any Xbox title coming to PC. Now they're going as far as making it neccesary to have Windows fully updated to use certain games. Edge won't be an issue, can't remember the last time I bothered to use any browser offered by Microsoft. Back in XP probably. I know 10 still seems to be adding 4gb to my GPU. Appearing in places as a 12gb card. Anyone had that problem? Seems to have little effect to games, where memory is picked up properly. Edit: It's done, besides annoyingly re-pinning their own apps back to the taskbar, nothing seems broken. |
Re: [Update] Windows 10 Discussion
Not taking the chance with clean install . on Some it works others like my sons
he lost the computer for a while took days for it to reinstall The answer i suppose is a spare Hard Drive install of WIN7 Using the original serial number as long as same version of windows 7. for older things i use Win XP 2Gig RAM And that flys it runs a programme that only runs on that and Vista not on www so completly Safe |

Re: [Update] Windows 10 Discussion
My computer died last week, i worked out it was either the i3 processor or the motherboard, but seeing the motherboard chipset was so old and hard to source i replaced both of them with a newer chipset MB which also worked with my DD3 memory modules.
As Windows 10 was tied to the hardware i was worried i would lose activation which i did, but after a few clicks in Windows i was back up and running fully activated, i was expecting to have to call Microsoft and persuade them to reactive. edit Scrap the above as i noticed the date and time was wrong on the PC so i am guessing when i changed it it borked the activation and now i can't get it activated as the servers are down, will keep trying. |
