I guess no more Showtime content on netflix then?

The likes of Showtime and HBO will still sell their content as part of TV packages the streaming options are to attract those subscribers who don't want cable/satellite packages and have already severed ties.

No the company is Starz but i've heard nothing more on that v yet will update once i find out.
The other company i was on about trialing a tv service was plusnet this has now launched it's freeview plus a few extra channels via the net aka syfy, history, discovery etc, suprisingly historyhd is on plusnet tv too i wasn't expected this as it's not on vm yet as far as i'm aware.

To watch US Netflix on my Xbox One I have entered some DNS numbers into it, it has worked perfectly for several months, however today I notice that all the US thumbnails now display the message 'to continue streaming US Netflix go to viperDNS.com' although clicking the thumbnail still let's me watch US Netflix.

Has anyone else experienced this and can I just change my DNS numbers on the Xbox One to get the normal thumbnails back?

I don't really need to pay money if just entering DNS numbers into Xbox One works, the question is has anyone experienced what I am seeing, is it normal to see that and is it related to the DNS numbers I entered? :)

50p is nothing really considering how much original programming they are making nowadays.

Exactly, and if they had stuff on there like Rizzoli and all 3 of the NCIS franchises then I would only need Virgin for the Sports so I could watch the golf.

I agree. However, as more programming gets added, costs will increase for Netflix.

They may reach a point where they need to have a two or three tier structure so that you can pay less for a more limited choice. However, that may be a few years off yet.

Original content does not equate to quality though. Bloodlines was pretty acceptable, but some of the other stuff has been pretty standard in my eyes.

I never finished From Dusk til Dawn and Sense8 i'm on the fence with as i felt it was too buch bloat and not enough substance, but Straczynski is known for sowing seeds that seem pointless to begin with but turn out to be important in later seasons, season 2 will hopefully have less Wachowski and more Straczynski. All of their other original shows i've loved or liked though, Bloodlines probably the least.

Indeed they do. I have greatly enjoyed House Of Cards, ORITNB and Lilyhammer. They do have great content too, but unfortunately, like all other content providers they are going to produce original content that is not of interest to me or content I do not like. I never cared for Marco Polo or Dusk Til Dawn and Sense 8 is really not my thing. Daredevil is fairly decent, I agree, it's just that I struggle with the premise of that super hero. A couple more recent releases - Kimmy Schmidt and Frankie and Grace are just not for me either.

I guess I am a bit odd with my viewing habits, as well as documentaries, I really do like dark TV shows with a bit mystery, that are set very much in the present with characters who seem like they could be real people and often have morale conundrums in them. Luther, Broadchurch, Whitechapel, Law and Order: CI, Law and Order, Shield, Braquo and True Detective are probably my favourite TV shows from the past 10-15 years. As such, this really limits the content I like. It's the same with Atlantic, so much is not of interest or has shows what I would class as average or poor. I am happy to try new shows, but it's rare for me to rave over them.
For example - Banshee, is sadly pretty average. It's plot for the second season was better than I thought it would be and it does very little wrong in terms of script, acting or direction. There is something missing that stops me from enjoying it as much as I would like to though. Also, Battlestar Gallactica and Fire Fox were excellently made all round, but I could not rave about them purely because they did not keep my attention enough - and much to my brothers amazement I can only rate them as average TV shows.

Perhaps I should stay out of content discussions because I am a very fussy watcher of TV.

Netflix is a great service as it stands, though, but in a years time I may have a £2 price hike to contend with, in which I may not get HD content and I would then have to decide whether or not the service is worth while. With the content it is producing at the moment, I would have to question whether it is.:(.

I think we are all fussy viewers, Harry, but we are all hung up on different things. Most of the programmes you have highlighted I like very much, and it is the very wide distribution of those programmes over many different channels and streaming services that makes us all pay rather more than we want to pay in the end.

However, for me, content is everything and my hope is that in the not too distant future we will be able to choose practically whatever we want from the libraries of programmes available to us. However, I don't like to dwell too much on how much this might cost!

Yeah, I guess that is where I might be lucky in the future. I will happily drop services if the content is not there for me.

I think your idea is what everyone wants, but like you say, cost is best not mentioned.......nor potential advertising;)

I have loved a lot of their Original Content, House of Cards, OITNB, Daredevil (This was superb one of the best superheroes TV series I can remember) Marco Polo, Arrested Development.

I have only seen one episode of Sense8 and found it a bit messy which is a shame due to the great JMS being involved.

Hot Girls Wanted seems rather intersting ;)

Considering they used to charge £10 a day, that's not bad, (but I wont be taking it up!)

On a slightly different note, I wonder what (apart from a new design and ethernet port) the new box has to offer

i think it's way too much but people have complained in the past that they're forced to pay for channels they don't want just to get the sports.

Sky have obviously listened and it's a good move, now if only they'd extend it to pubs and clubs where they're forced to take the whole shebang at +£700 a month.

It's business Den , Sky charges £25.50 for Sky Sports on the Satellite platform however you must have the Original bundle at a cost of £20 so the entry point is £45.50.

This now offers a cheaper entry point for those who just want freeview and sport , in fact even with the Entertainment pass its only £38.98.

I was basing it on the bare minimun i could find as you do not need entertainment pass for sky sports on nowtv so was trying to balance it out if that makes sense? lol.
Ofcourse it will vary if you take out m+ or above.

Given that it's only £3 more than if you bought it from VM whilst subscribing to M TV, it's not such a rip off as I would have expected from Sky.

Are we factoring cost of broadband with these prices as for cord cutting? you still need Internet to view it, would it be incorrect to assume to add £10 for cheapest BB cord cutting as VM, BT and sky prices include the BB

Sky and VM offer TV services without broadband. I assume that with BT, you have to have BB from them to get TV. I could be wrong on that though.

But the significant change to me is that, for sports fans, sport is now available at a similar, though slightly higher price, via streaming rather than having to subscribe to a full pay TV service with at least a 12 month contract; Now TV's previously daily and weekly passes were too expensive to be viable for a sports fan who want an on-going service.

It may still be cost effective to go down the Sky or VM route if you want phone and broadband bundled, but there is now another option, especially if you want BT sport as well as Sky sports, as this is free (excluding the new European part) if you get your broadband from BT.

muppetman11 16-06-2015 18:26

Re: Netflix/Streaming Services

You can actually get BT's TV for free per month which includes all BT Sport channels however this only includes the non PVR Youview box and I think there's an activation charge of around £35.

Anyone with the Now TV Entertainment Pass

True Detective Season 2 (HBO) starts this Monday , Colin Farrell , Vince Vaughn

The Brink (HBO) starts this Monday , Tim Robbins , Jack Black

100% agree, for me personally a potential game changer to go down the individual stream route for a more tailored package

If costs work out I may sacrifice the HD in order to do this

That's not too bad. This article suggests the box will support 1080p stream:

http://www.engadget.com/2015/06/16/sky-now-tv-august/

The current Now TV box streams SKY Sports at 720p. So if the new box does stream at 1080p, and that's the quality it delivers for SKY Sports, is £31.99 per month via Now TV actually the cheapest way to get SKY Sports in full HD?

Because to be honest, I hardly play games on the One. I mainly use it for Netflix and iPlayer now. So I was thinking of cancelling Gold until I finally start playing games properly on the One.

Rather strange (as the article points out) as CBS network shows aren't on Hulu.

I have 3 NOW TV SKY Sports day passes to give away for free. Only catch is they need to be redeemed before midnight tonight! I've had them for ages, and only noticed earlier that they are about to run out. Once redeemed through the NOW TV website, you have a full year to use them.

There's not catch, no BS, I'm just looking to give them away to 3 people who will genuinely use them. The first 3 people to direct message me will get them. Remember they must be redeemed in the next 90 mins!

But limited device access with the forthcoming UKTV channels.

I'd heard of it but not paid much attention to it before. Prompted by tassiekev's post, I've just added it to Fire TV... which won't be getting the UK TV channels.

I welcome all new OTT services and this will be great value for some people, even though not for me; Now TV gives me a range of channels more suited to me for the same price (based on buying the Now TV three month pass).

The free plan only allows you to watch on a computer after your 45 day trial, it can be quite expensive $39 p/m or $29 with limited dvr

If it becomes a paid service I really hope they bump up the bitrate, the current TV Player app on Fire TV and Android TV is a bit ropey picture wise. Also going to have to count the channels noway is there 55 on those.

I currently use Deezer Premium free as part of a purchase with a few Sonos speakers , when this free 12 months ends does anyone have experience of any other services specifically the pay element of them.

Spotify worked well when I tried it free of charge through VM for a bit, but I am not sure of any other services. I then had Deezer free with Orange mobile for ages. when I cancelled my mobile deal, Deezer gave me the option of another month free followed by my current deal of 3 months premium subscription for just 99p all in. Hopefully you will get a similar deal when the subscription ends and you can have a good look at alternatives others may suggest for you:)

Edit

Spotify is the same price as Deezer too and offers pretty much the same stuff.

Re: Netflix/Streaming Services

I'm probably on totally the wrong path, but I had Spotify some time ago as a freebie for a while. When that ran out, I looked for alternatives and (thankfully) discovered internet radio. Well over 17,000 stations (156 alone playing 50s - OK so I'm old), just about every genre with very few, if any, ads. Radiosure (free) on a PC/laptop even allows you to record.

http://www.radiosure.com/downloadz/

There is a paid version but I've never felt the need.

Does the service have to work on a Sonos system or are you just using sonos branded speakers on another system.

Put another way, what devices do you want it to work with?

These are the services that work with sonos; I think pretty much all services work with your other devices.

http://www.sonos.com/en-gb/streaming-music?r=1

I've only used services on the PC and have tried Spotify, Deezer, Rdio and Napster. And I'm currently trialling the free three month apple music trial, which according to this will eventually be coming to sonos:

http://www.macrumors.com/2015/06/28/apple-music-sonos/

Using these services will be different on a device rather than a PC, so it's probably worth trialling them all.

On the PC side, I think Spotify is best (providing you fix it so that you are using an earlier version of the software than the abomination they released a few months ago). Deezer lacks a PC client and is web only and in Napster and Rdio, I can't find a way to sort playlists. Apple music could be promising (much as I hate to admit it :D) but still early days of playing.

I got a three month free trial of Google Music, which now also includes YouTube Music Key. You can upload 50 000 of your own songs into their locker and mix and match with their streaming service. Works really well on a Android device and has chromecast support.

Also has Songza built into the app which has sveral playlists, which change throught the day, to match your moods (working out, cooking dinner, Sunday night etc) and curtated by real DJs (not sure if that is a good thing).

I use Google Play Music and I like it. I like the fact that you can upload your own copy where the album isn't available in their library.

The only downside is that on the PC, it only seems to like Chrome, but it's not much of a problem.

I trialled Spotify a few months back and it seemed to be cluttered with additional stuff.

You can. It's a little more involved on Amazon fire products. I'll find a link later

For some reason, the Fire box and stick needs a static IP address. I don't really understand these things, so just followed the instructions step by step.

All I needed to do on my WDTV and LG Bluray player was change the DNS numbers. Why the Fire boxes have to be different, I haven't got a clue!

I decided not to buy the Fire stick that is on offer for £19 today only, as i would have needed to signup to Amazon Prime at £79 a year which i didn't want!

I actually did signup and then cancelled it in 10mins for a full refund as they don't currently do the free months trial anymore, at some point i will just grab the stick at full price.
