I don't get the problems you refer to.

If you think that all channels start and end on time, you're mistaken. Clearly you don't though as you mention BBC. (who have a funny start time for the One show at like 3 minutes to the hour - not that I record that!)

Coronation Street has a very random start time. The 8.30 editions sometimes start at nearly 8.28 but the 7.30 slot is more normal.

You cannot set a series link that has different padding for 2 separate editions

It is a lot of messing around to set padding for each show individually. It's far better to have a default setting.

Sky boxes drop the padding when you have clashes, and the V+HD box also does the same thing.

The TiVo box if it tries to drop the padding it goes too far and cuts off the last 2 mins of the first programme or the first 2 mins of the 2nd programme.

All I can tell you is my experience; I rarely use padding and don't have problems.

The V+ handled padding way better than Tivo; a point I made several times before VM released Tivo when someone posted how Tivo did handle padding. But it was clear that Tivo would not be adopting the V+ method.

That is why when I got Tivo, I decided to try zero padding as the default and just add padding to the odd show and that method has worked for me.

Agree.

I prefer padding because otherwise we end up missing bits of shows. (There is also the issue that the clock on the TiVo software is not matched exactly to the clock for TV broadcasts. A few seconds out.

But it doesn't cause a problem, only very rarely due to 3 tuners.

On VM forum this afternoon:

Today we've made some changes to the packages some channels are available on, so those on the lower tiers can now start to enjoy the great content from:
Animal Planet (216)
Previously: L pack
Now: M+ pack
MTV (134)
Previously: L pack
Now: M+ pack
Nick Jnr (715)
Previously: XL pack
Now: L pack
Comedy Central +1 (133)
Previously: XL pack
Now: L pack

Are they preparing for something to happen in the XL package?

I'm sure they would be very stupid to not get the remaining channels from Viacom from this deal, especially MTV HD, the picture quality on the SD channel is shocking

I know! I went to channel 134 by accident (wanted to watch Comedy Central HD) and the picture quality was bloody awful! :bigcry:

I don't get the problems you refer to.

If I don't have padding, at least 90% of the programmes miss the end.

My V+ sometimes gets confused with padding and this causes a clash. Sometimes deleting and re-adding planned recordings resolves this, othet times a manual recording has to be used.

I was rather hoping that if I got a TiVo that this problem would be a thing of the past

The value of music channels to the platform has dropped considerably. As people use sites like You Tube or the VM on demand music service, viewing figures have tumbled.

The only way that I think we will get them is if they are provided to VM for free or dirt cheap.

This would help the music channels regain some lost viewers.

Perhaps this will have Universal programmes in HD for those wanting the Universal HD channel?

Are there any instances where VM only carry the SD variant of a channel, but show it's HD content on VOD?

Yeah, I'm not quite sure how much sense there would be in removing certain music channels, only to add them back at the next contract renewal. There's probably too many music channels around, all chasing the same audience.

Speaking of music channels, now that the MTV section of the music genre has been tidied up, it would be nice to see a similar move to tidy up the Box TV listings on the EPG.

Same as ITV then, so Virgin Medias On Demand Library gets smaller and smaller, poor show VM.

That, plus the devaluing of the XL pack by the moving of channels from it to lower tiers, and soon to be lost ESPN is making XL looking like a less preferable choice for me anyway

Just one of the many things Sky believe is better but apart from SA they have nothing else to offer to many people.

Confirmed: Virgin Media to broadcast Local TV on Virgin Channel 159.

The head of the London Evening Standard's TV channel 'London Live' has confirmed to the Westminster Media Forum on local media. "What "still needs to be resolved" is Virgin Media's offer of slot 159 on its TV service." Which he feels is too low down.

Considering how few viewers these local channels will get, it needs to go a lot lower down on the EPG than 159

I am with the Head of London Live on this one.

Why give Local TV Channel 159 when Virgin Media have the following channels free (As of May 30th)?

-Channel 119
-Channel 120 and
-Channel 141.

Drama launches on Freeview on the 8th July. Any news about a Virgin Media launch yet? As it's a Freeview channel it might just turn up on Virgin, BT and SKY without any real prior notice.

I don't think it's going to be a channel watched often in my house. Drama is being billed as ITV 3's biggest rival :td: Of course others may enjoy this type of programming.

Heard a little rumour today regarding the Launch of Boxnation HD. I have no idea if Boxnation HD will launch on both Virgin and SKY however a September launch seems certain. If Boxnation secure the rights to show Mayweather Vs. Alvarez, on the 14th September, this will be the fight they use to drive the launch of their new HD channel.

Good luck to you. I had many problems with Sky both at home with my parents and also on my own when I moved out. Weather really affected my service (in both places), and BB was poor (although that was before Sky got BB.)

Anyway, if you are willing to risk the odd extra channel for the loss of signal (which could mean you not being able to watch the extra channels anyway), I respect your decision and wish you good luck:)

Don't know how to add two quotes, but Paultrademark I am responding to your post too.

We do not know what Universal and SyFy are gonna add yet. We could get much higher quality programming form them over what ITV and Warners could offer. Law and Order (origianl and CI) would be good. I Don't know much about SYFY, but will see when it arrives.
Also VM have added lots of channels to the XL package this year, and I am confident more come with Liberty's takeover.

We had sky before. Only lost signal once in blue moon. We must be better sheltered.

We moving primarily because of cost.

Only for tv. Getting bt Internet. Which we never had prob with for decades either. Just moved to Virgin for cost in 2009.

Whoops, I now remember you saying you were getting BB from BT, and your cost savings.:erm: Apologies:(

Wow, you were/are clearly in a good place Sky! Saying that though, I am in a prime location for fantastic VM services and even if my landlord allowed me me to have Sky, due to the bad experiences, I simply would not risk it again!

tbh don't think we'll change back now in a hurry. It's a lot of hassle having to change. and unless there's a big saving (which at full price new deal will still be less than was b4)

I made the plunge for BT...but I can live with 18mths contract, and can always switch back to sky for broadband.

For tv..not found anyone yet other than sky...but who knows

Matter of opinion, yes only if you don't have a TiVo or V+ also programmes are so repeated though out the week it is easy to catch up!

It is easy to catch up, but why should people have to wait a couple of days after the episode is first shown though? If VM have the space to launch the channels, (which they clearly do) what is the problem? I rarely use them myself, but when I do need them, I am glad they are available.

If the problem lies with VM not launching "popular" channel(s) (I can only think of Sky Atlantic and now BT Sport), there must be reasons we have not got them yet. The same goes for the HD variants.

Surely people who find the +1 channels useful should not be made to wait until the "popular" channel(s) are launched?

coulsontom 01-06-2013 23:06

Re: Coming Soon to Virgin TV (2013) Vol. 2.

I don't see the benefit of +1 channels when you have recording facility. I've used a +1 channel perhaps about 3 times in my life.

People seem to be obsessed about new channels as tho its fantastic. Its rubbish unless they actually show anything good (or indeed new as +1 is the same channel as the -1)

Arthurgray50@blu 01-06-2013 23:15

Re: Coming Soon to Virgin TV (2013) Vol. 2.

coulsontom, l agree with what you say, It always appears to me that when you have +1 channels, its classed as a NEW CHANNEL, which it is not.

I can never understand if we are supposed to be competition for Sky or the other broadcastors out there, then VM must have the same channels as Sky. And other members will say, we have to wait till contracts run there course - absolute rubbish.

What the problem is, is that VM want channels on the cheap, whereas at the end of the day its us that end up paying for it.
Like BT Sports, if WE have to pay for it, then so be it.

I just feel sorry for all the customers that live in flats that cannot get dishes, I can always laugh when l go round Hounslow and see tower blocks with Dishes outside peoples windows, on the 8th or 12th floot or sometimes higher - goes to think, what they think of VM doesn't it.

So, the problem is that VM want to make you pay the least amount possible? They should stop worring about that, get the channels for whatever the broadcaster wants, than then immediately pass it onto the customers?

Or, you know, the tower blocks don't have cable anyway, so they are forced to get satellite?

You are right about channels, only showing good stuff, but who decides what is good? Too many people like too many different things. I detest reality TV, others love it.

You say you don't see the point of +1's, that is fine, but what is your objection to them being on the platform?

It is not technically a new channel Arthur you are right.

Your statement is rather an odd one in my eyes. You say VM should have the same channels as Sky, but always come across as angry, upset or frustrated when they launch the +1 channels or the niche foreign channels, VM clearly can't win in your eyes. Perhaps when/if VM get Sky Atlantic, you will finally be happy. It would please me to hear that:) You mention the contracts and it being a rubbish excuse. Contracts are legally binding and companies will be sued for breaching them.

The good people of Hounslow probably own their flats and therefore are allowed to put dishes up. IF I wanted a Sky dish, and I don't, my landlord will simply tell me no.

I don't see the benefit of +1 channels when you have recording facility. I've used a +1 channel perhaps about 3 times in my life.

I just love +1 channels and use them alot BUT - Were do I begin.

Must say the TiVo looks better than Harmony BUT still ;)

Whole Home DVR

  • Watch recorded shows on any TV in the house – all from a single DVR.
  • Six times the program storage space of our Standard DVR.
  • Switch rooms and keep watching. Pause your recorded show in one room and resume watching it in another.
  • Pause live TV in any room.
  • No more arguing over what to watch. Watch different live or recorded shows in different rooms all at the same time.

What an impressive channel line-up. There would be no moans in this household if Liberty Global can supply something like that especially with the advanced viewing options. Wishful thinking I know.

So, the problem is that VM want to make you pay the least amount possible? They should stop worring about that, get the channels for whatever the broadcaster wants, than then immediately pass it onto the customers?

The thing that frustrates people is that other providers seem to be able to add new channels at the drop of a hat without having to constantly increase the cost of a package.
