Its going to be the plum colour for TiVo and the black and white look for the older V boxes

Its something you'll have to get used to I'm afraid

Style over substance. Suggestions as they were meant to be or menus in hd? Nah, we'll make it look good and hope they don't notice it's no longer as good as it used to be.

It's up to US TiVo to turn more of them HD - VM TiVo has the same number HD screens as US TiVo does now.

Style over substance only applies if no extra functionality is added and it's just a cosmetic makeover.

Functionality was added. The lack of the mini TV screen in planned recordings and other menus was a nuisance as you couldn't continue to watch or listen when checking these things.

Also, re-ordering series links locked up the box for ages (around 20 minutes for me) whilst it was processing the changes. Now it doesn't and you can simply re-order by taping a number in a box.

Both of these were big functionality improvements for me.

I actually think it looks quite good , there are plenty of positives one being the move to HTML 5 perfect for the arrival of the new iPlayer.

My Shows can now be filtered by Genres which is useful especially if you have a 1TB box which may have pages of recordings Sky have this feature in their planner and its extremely useful if you only want to display movies or a specific genre.

I'll be interested to give it a go when it arrives.

It's nothing to do with tastes, as in " colour " Den, imo the functionality upgrades are of more importance.

I'm glad that these nuisances have been resolved for you. It's a shame it was at the detriment of one of the key selling points of TiVo.

Gotta agree with those who like the look of it. I am hoping the speed improves I must admit. I am not overly bothered by the speed of my TIVO overall, but faster and smoother is always better.

Does anyone know if the introduction of HTML 5 mean the new apps will, essentially, be webpages or is it more technical that that?

No area "normally" gets updates first*. The areas are picked depending on how many customers we want to get the software, and that varies each time.

(*) Except Crawley maybe. If we want a small standalone area on the Knowsley network, there's a choice of one...

Given that amazon prime is rumoured to be coming to US TiVo, then it theoretically should be possible. I guess it depends if VM and UK Amazon can or want to do a deal.

Netflix and the BBC wrote the apps that are on TiVo, so it's pretty much guaranteed that there'll be no option for alternative apps or versions.

The same would apply for other services, you'll get the version and experience that the content provider wants you to have.

I know what you are referring to, but that isn't what I meant.

You will not be able to use a homebrewed version of Netflix or iPlayer, or any other version other than the one listed.

What I meant, and my technical knowledge might be letting me down so I stand to be corrected, is that the current apps are flash based, and the opera tv store apps are html5 based. I'm not interested in using something put together by some kid in his bedroom, but it might be that the official versions of both those apps as available through the opera store actually work better than the versions that currently live on our TiVos.

I do like the look of the new screens. The new 'Partially watched' facility on My Shows and the breakdown into genres are certainly improvements.

If after modifying a recording you get returned to the part of the EPG you last accessed instead of being thrown back to today's date, this would be very welcome also!

Re: General TiVo Discussion Part 3

I'm looking forward to this update. We don't watch TV much these days, but with Bakeoff and Doctor Who back on, its really obvious to me how terrible the current TiVo interface is. It's so slow and cumbersome, as well as poorly laid out. The switch to HTML5 excites me, as long as the box is able to cope but it should at least be 10x better than Flash. Flash can't die quickly enough.

andy_m 14-09-2014 11:49

Don't think anyone knows just yet, (happy to be corrected though.) My area (33) only got the Netflix update on the very last day, so I am hopeful we won't be one of the last again, but time will tell.

Well remembered. That was true in those days, but the rest of the network has now caught up so it's no longer a consideration. The pilot regions are now chosen mainly by size.

Nothing in Hertfordshire yet (AL4 area). Although my mother did inform me that her Tivo box was acting odd this morning, and randomly decided to stick a spinning wheel in the middle of Good Morning Britain. Can't imagine it devalued the program that much though :P

For anyone that's got it, is it essentially a reskin and conversion to HTML5, or is the interface now re-ordered/shuffled round? I ask as I've got an elderly grandmother on Tivo and we've only just about got her trained on the current one, so would like to know what hell I'm about to enter!

SO anyone that's got it, care to comment on performance? Just average day to day menus and stuff, that's where the biggest improvement needs to be in my opinion.

Re: General TiVo Discussion Part 3

Well, I was one of the lucky ones who went home last night to find that the update had been received by my Tivo. As promised, this is my first impression.

I was pleased to note that the home page loaded as soon as I pressed the 'Home' button on the remote. This was a big improvement as before we had to wait quite a few seconds before it would load.

The colour scheme is better in my opinion. Gone are the garish brothel red colours, although my wife commented that the new screen was dark compared with the old one. I found it an improvement, and more restful to the eyes. I guess there will be various opinions as to whether the new colours are better or worse than before.

One thing I did notice was everything looked so sharp and clear, which I liked very much.

I particularly liked the new menu for 'My Shows', which was previewed earlier in this thread. The 'partially watched' section takes you straight to those shows you have started watching, so gone are the days when you unintentionally pick up a half watched programme six months after you started it (which I have done several times before!).

The recordings are now also displayed by genre (just a limited number - movies, sport and kids) but it does make it easier to find what you want. Hopefully they will be able to expand the number of genres after a while. I'd love to keep all my wife's lifestyle/reality programmes separate!

To get all of your recordings displayed, you just select 'All', but the same seems to happen with 'TV and Radio': I've yet to work out the significance of that section.

I cannot yet comment on 'Suggestions' as I think the programmes selected via the last update have just been brought forward, but I will be checking on whether the selections and capacity of this has been improved.

There is a section called 'More to Watch' which provides a selection of live TV programmes currently being shown that you might like. Not something that would be of much interest to me as I watch only recorded/on demand stuff but it is a good alternative to channel hopping.

The apps I think are the same and the new BBC i-Player hasn't been provided yet, but Netflix looks a bit different and now it shows the users that you have entered on the website, which it didn't do before. This is quite good because after a while, I shouldn't be seeing a load of kids' stuff under my name!

I was extremely pleased that the glitch in the previous update in which the EPG returned to today's date when modifying a programme on another day has been resolved. You are now returned to where you were before on the EPG, which saves an awful lot of button pressing when recording programmes for the week!

I thought it was my imagination, but my wife thought the same - the programmes appear to be presented in a better resolution - almost HD quality. I was not expecting this and I was very pleased. All the SD programmes I watched last night were more of a delight to watch as a result.

All in all, a much needed improvement I would say, but don't expect lots of additional features. I think I have described all of the most notable changes. It is definitely faster than before and feels more stable. The only disappointment for me was that the menus are not presented pictorially as mini - TV screens as they are on Sky's system: I think this looks good and it integrates better broadcast TV with recordings and on demand. I hope that VM work on something similar for next time.

If I come across any other improvements that I have not yet noticed, I'll let you all know. But what I have seen is definitely positive and I am pleased to have been one of the first to get it!

The My Shows bit, does it still do them as a series, ie all the NCIS episodes in one group and all the episodes of a soap, say Corrie, in another group? If not then already I hate it and haven't even had the update.

Yes it does, but you can have your programmes displayed another way, so that they are not in groups. I think it's one of the coloured buttons on your remote control (blue?). I'll check when I get home for you, unless someone else can help with this in the meantime.

It was helpful, maybe it might not be as bad as I expect it to be. But I am one of those who hates change.

The new colours do take a little while to adjust to, as does the new menu's, but they are a lot clearer and sharper.

I like the "partially watched" menu - handy for selecting.

The "what to watch now" area I am not sure about as it looks to me like a direct copy of the programming guide with a larger window.

All in all, for me anyway, the sharper images, plus quick loading makes it a welcome update.

just checked, Mark, you can get rid of the groups by pressing the blue button on your remote. And if you want it sorted by date rather than alphabetically, press the yellow button. That should resolve it for you.

Thanks for this review.

have you used the youtube app?

Is it any faster in loading/searching if you used it before?

Yes, I didn't have to wait as long as before for YouTube to load and selection of material was fairly quick too.

Of course, I can't guarantee that everyone will have the same experience as there are issues in some areas that do not affect me (touch wood!).

good to hear

they haven't broken anything have they :D

Re: General TiVo Discussion Part 3

Probably. This could be why only small areas got this update first, that way any glitches can be fixed before rolling out to everyone else. Sucks for those who have to put up with glitchy boxes but I would rather be one of the last ones to get the update provided it had all the glitches fixed.

I don't think so. The previous update was a disappointment, but this one is much better done, IMO. Much more stable by the look of it and that irritating problem of the EPG jumping back to 'today' when modifying a recording in the future has been resolved.

No complaints so far!

It was a disappointment for the reason I gave about the EPG in my last post, which was extremely frustrating, and because they messed with the suggestions. Everything worked more slowly than before - many posts in here about this.

You will see when you get this update that it is much improved and less clunky, although I cannot say yet whether that also goes for the suggestions.
