Re: General TiVo Discussion Part 2

Gentleman,
Previously i have criticised VM for their fiasco since dec for the pre regs.
Monday @ 10a.m i received a email.
I spoke to a very nice CS rep , ordered my Tivo she could not order an install.
Told me she would ring back.
She rang me back that day.
Install booked for today.
Engineer came at the right time
Installed everything well and dead quickly- approx 30 mins according to the missus.
Explained everything to her clearly.
The picture quality is first rate
The sound via my sony amp is powerful especially in DD
Its a treat to use and given the work that must have gone on i now understand the wait and im supprised that it was not a longer wait given the level of applying tivo to vm
Its slick, smooth and a bargin
Well done VM you have made for for everything and to everyone waiting you wont be disappointed.

I've Found one negative with the TIVO so far. You can't set reminders which we use a lot in our family.

No reminders? Seems odd, was a very useful tool....

I totally agree in that l use reminders all the time for sports event and other programmes that l want to watch.

I second that! I've had my TiVo for a day and a half now and I like nearly everything about it but it's still so obviously a work in progress. The sluggish speed of the interface (compared to the SA V+ box) and integration of the BBC iPlayer into the EPG are two things that need looking at urgently. But I really, really miss the reminders which were very useful in this household so as not to miss things like news and the start of live events that you don't wish to see 'second hand' via a recording. If you're listening, VM, PLEASE can we have them back.

Hmm, just got my VM Bill e-mailed to me and the payment for the TiVo isn't included. Install hasn't happened yet (Monday).

I've spoken a couple of times to CS on some other issues and the install is definitely marked against my account.

Can Ben or DF confirm that it'll only get added to the bill after the install?

PB

The BBC OD not being in the EPG is a BBC stipulation so there isn't much VM can do about that, blame the trust and there stupid rules. I find it odd you say it's sluggish compared to an SA as my TiVo is like lightning compared to my SA!

PS I have never really used the reminders but I can see if you do it's a blow to loose them. Personly I don't think they will be put back in.

The sluggish speed is most likely down to it still downloading information in the background. TiVo owners I've spoken to say that there's a notable speed improvement after a few days as the info finishes downloading and you get the full three weeks of EPG content (two weeks forward, one back)

They are working with the BBC at the moment so that they will be able to have all the content in the EPG, So that is why at the moment it is not available in the EPG.
I posted this before in the thread!

On the day of installation I noticed that the EPG was incomplete - it only went backwards an hour or two. I'll check later on today and see if it goes back further. I hope it does speed up as I am starting to find it annoying.

Another thing that was disappointing was the lack of audio connectivity at the back of the TiVo. The initial set up was without sound as none of my connections fitted the sole audio socket on the TiVo. It took a phone call to Bang & Olufsen to find a workaround. I now have my picture via the HDMI lead and my sound via a SCART lead. Whenever I switch on I get no picture but an error message to unplug either the HDMI or the SCART until I juggle with some buttons on the remote after which it behaves normally. This is another niggle and something VM and TiVo should have foreseen.

BTW, according to Bang & Olufsen, none of their TVs come with the optical audio connection used on the TiVo.

Devil, does your backwards EPG take you directly to the program you select in catch-up and not just to the main catch-up menu? I know it should!

Also can you get to catch-up from a search result? Seems odd I can't.

My B&O TV is quite new and even the most up to date TVs from them do not have the optical audio. All I can say is that Bang & Olufsen must be doing something right as my set gives me a superb picture and superb sound even with the odd set up.

I would like to know this two, although I find it hard to believe that is the case the V+ does and I have not read this in any other review.

Just call CS to get confirmation that my install is happening today and it is so off to program the Harmony for the Tivo.

Yes, I know that's not exactly what you posted but my point is that it hasn't really been "a fiasco" at all. They simply had far more pre-reg's than expected; at which point, maybe things got little hairy is all.

Good luck

He should be disciplined. I wouldn't have thought any VM employee hadn't heard of tivo by now. Certainly none of the ones I have spoken to getting my install sorted. Ring up retentions now and they should sort it. Assuming that they are open on Saturdays.

Does anyone know which button on the code for the CT8685 corresponds with Home key, have found some nice short cuts at the Tivo Community forum that I would like to set up:

Home+Home : My recordings (now playing)
Home+1 : Manage series links
Home+2 : Planned recordings (todo list)
Home+3 : Wishlists
Home+4 : Search all TV
Home+5 : Browse all TV

I must say that i think Virgin, so far, could have done things a lot better. Some aspects seem very chaotic and would describe certain fiasco's from experiences over the week.
Mis (non) communication seems a massive problem within Virgin when dealing with the Tivo.
If they have the boxes to provide us with (which seems they do). Surely they should expect the interest.
The emails have also been poor.
Having said that, so far i have been on the 'other' side and recieved some excellent customer service.

Or pm a Virgin rep on the VM community forum. They can provide you with your install date if you give them your house number and postcode.

I still can't view catchup directly from the EPG. Also doing a search does not find catchup shows. There are lots of annoyances at the moment. Also the BBC stuiff HAS to be viewed through iPlayer, rather than through normal catchup. I hope VM are reading this forum.

Unfortunately it isn't possible to test with every TV model, and occasionally incompatibilities arise. Can you be more specific about what the error message is, and what you have to do to make it work?

What model TV do you have?

AFAIK (from posts in this and the Tivo forums) it's because of contractual limits that certain providers have placed on VM.

Well, just as I thought, never, ever trust the off shore call ctr!!!!

Contract came through this morning ready for install next week, and it was for £112 per month, it should have been £75!!!!! 1 phone call to the UK call ctr and contract was rectified, but during that call it transpires that the manager i spoke to at the off shore call ctr has failed to apply the credit for the free upgrade of the V box to a VHD box!!!!! So the UK call ctr has to email the off shore and then I have to call back to ensure the credit has been applied!!!

I detest the off shore call ctrs that Virgin use, not once have I ever had a problem sorted by them, and more often then not they are the cause of the problems as they lie and then try to cover their tracks!!!!

Ah well, complaint has been submitted, thankfully I called on th 084 number so the exact time and duration of the call is showing on my bill so they can not deny the call took place, just the content of the call needs to be sorted out!!!

:) I just figured that out, I haven't looked at the original V+ remote in years as I have a Harmony One and Have been using the Menu button as the Home key.

Now have a bunch of sequences set up as shortcuts to those commands.

And to top it all of here is a first in the 14 odd years I have been a cable customer, the installer just phoned me and there have been a few cancellations today and I am in the area, I know its a PM install but to you mind if I come now?

Woohooo should be all Tivoed up soon.

Yes, I know that's not exactly what you posted but my point is that it hasn't really been "a fiasco" at all. They simply had far more pre-reg's than expected; at which point, maybe things got little hairy is all.

Fiasco is too strong a word, but anyone who doesn't admit that there have been problems and the whole thing could have run a lot smoother, is, in my view, wearing the same rose coloured glasses that you are.

Without people like DF and and others like him on this forum, telling us what was going on, I'm sure VM would have had a lot more complaints about various aspects of the whole process.

Let us know how TiVo plays with your Harmony One, I'm getting mine installed on Tuesday so will have to reprogram the Harmony soon! :D

Whilst I certainly agree, I do the the conversion rate of pre regs to buyers has been very high in this case. Just look at the amount of people on this and many other forums taking VM up on their offer.

It seems to have generated a lot on interest amongst the early adopters at least. If it can grab Joe Publics attention in the same way remains to be seen however......

As long as they turn up Wednesday i will be happy lol, i might ring up Tuesday just to verify it has been put through.

If you go to the VM community forum a Virgin rep can verifiy you install date for you. A lot easier....

Im worrided about this. The amount of hassle and calls i had to make to get it; i only fear the worse! The lady in Manila was very hard to understand and couldnt/wouldnt verify my total amount pm.
So spoke to the sales team, and all joking aside, spoke to a Scottish bloke who was even harder to understand! He tended to talk out loud when reading too, which made a conversation very difficult!!
But was very helpful.
Fingers crossed when the bill comes through!

BTW, according to Bang & Olufsen, none of their TVs come with the optical audio connection used on the TiVo.

Bang & Olufsen have always been problematic with all their equipment. They seem to adopt non standard specifications.

0001 Additional V box
V+HD box
0002 Additoanl V Box

Does this mean that I will be keeping both of my original boxes?. The price quoted is £102.55 per month, which is what I was expecting. I won't be too upset eitehr way to be honest!. Any of the staffers have an idea?

Well, the plot thickens slightly.

Another contract has been received through the post this morning, with a monthly figure of £105.55 quoted. The only change to the previous contract is that there is know a £3 monthly fee for Tivo quoted, which I know to be correct.

My question is why is my monthly package now costing about £6 a month more than it did before?. Package is VIP20 which I signed up for in June last year if I remember correctly. Staffers?

What model TV do you have?

I've just watched my recording of the F1 qualifying and everything worked normally which wasn't the case yesterday. I was getting an error message on a reddish background to disconnect the HDMI lead to continue viewing but when I pressed the 'Home' button I was taken there and everything was working again. I'll need to see if this persists.

I have a Beovision 7-40 with the Beolab speakers.

It struck me as odd with such a high-end TV. But Bang & Olufsen must know what they're doing. The quality of sound and picture (even with my weird set up) is excellent.

I do believe that with TiVo the HD picture quality is better than with my previous SA V+ box but I think the SD pq is slightly worse.

I have been trying it for a while now and on some programmes it says got to CATCH UP and on others it says WATCH FROM CATCH UP. So it seems to be certain programmes that you are able to view.

There are more people saying the tivo pq is just as good or even better. Personally i will reserve judgement until I can try it for myself. I can always return it if I'm not happy.

My TiVo has been installed for 24 hours now but it will only rewind the epg to yesterday and even then if I select a programme with a "c" it just takes me the normal VOD and I have to start searching for the item all over again.

Any advice most welcome please!:)

Glad to see it does work for someone. Mine doesn't work yet. Just wondering if this is linked to not being able to search through the on demand stuff? Devilincarnate, does the on demand stuff show up when you search? At the monet, if I search for, say Countdown, it will only show a list of future episodes, not the ones avaialble in demand. Also, if you search for a band or artist that are avaialable in Music on Demand, does that show up in a search? If it does, then it would seem that the catchup / search problems are linked
