VIRGIN MEDIA TV CHANNEL SWAP STRIKES AGAIN

So I see they have closed POP on Virgin TV to be replaced by True Entertainment. I for one am getting sick of all the channel departures for other channels. Come on Virgin Media, I know I dont watch POP but seriously Sky and Freesat keep it so why dont we?

If you ask VM they will no doubt merely say it's the broadcasters decision which of course it is.

What I would like to know is why huge broadcasters like Viacom, and to a lesser extent CSC Media feel the need to make such decisions. I asked Viacom at the time and got a blah blah blah response, perhaps agreed with VM.

But there's a reason for it, make no mistake.

If nothing totally new launches (let's say in April) there must be a problem somewhere.

Capacity, costs to broadcaster for EPG slot etc, I don't know but let's see what happens.

Fingers crossed!

So you want to continue paying for a channel you don't watch, purely because its available elsewhere?

Why?

What he and others are concerned about is why broadcasters feel the need to swap rather than just launch an additional channel on VM, it's only a FTA channel anyway.

Viacom did something similar last year but only on VM.

As bill payers I personally think we have every right to ask why this happens. VM won't answer and the broadcasters don't seem keen either so that's why it get's raised here. There is obviously a reason why it happens, we would just like to know why that's all.

I thought Pop was going onto OD, I can't see it here yet, unless it has not got it's own category.

Sometimes it takes a few hours, ESPN Classic didn't appear until later in the day if I remember right.

I think it's odd that on the 'channel closed' slate on 736 it dosen't specifically mention POP OD.

It's because people want to see VM have the widest channel choice possible and don't look at it from a 'what I want' point of view.

I don't watch sports channels, but the more they get the better.

The plus side of that: Sky's only advantage over VM is more channels. If VM get more channels, that (very small in my view) advantage Sky have is reduced and VM get more cutomers bringing in more revenue.

But the way VM have set out their model (i.e. trying to get everyone on XL so everyone gets everything bar Sports/Movies), they have to cater to the widest audience possible.

And removing a channel that will have a minuscule viewing figure % in comparison to other channels isn't going to upset enough people (or by keeping it entice enough people) to make it viable.

Choice with VM's TV is extremely limited. It has it's advantages (i.e. ESPN for free - which other platforms see as a premium channel). But this is one of the disadvantages - you will always be at the mercy of what VM consider the best deal for the majority.

Only if they are channels that a large % of customers will kick up a stink about if they can't view. Satellite has lots of channels that nobody watches in comparison to the "big ones". Doesn't mean VM should get them just for the sake of it if nobody is going to watch them. Someone will have to pay for their distribution on the VM network at some point. And that cost will get passed on in some way to me and you - something I can certainly do without

It's quite an advantage though to Joe Bloggs.

And of course being a cable customer of any operator you are always at the operators mercy on channel choice. You have to weigh up what else is offered, as we know there's plenty extra on VM aside from the channels available.

However I do find it a bit worrying though that broadcasters are swapping channels, I can't deny it especially when in this case they are only FTA channels anyway. I hope it isn't something that becomes the norm.

I do not know how long Virgin Media did sign the deal with CSC for but Wikipedia says POP, Tiny Pop and True Movies 1 launch on Virgin on the following dates:

True Movies 1 - October 16th 2007.
POP & Tiny Pop - October 11th 2007.

A year ago, sky had a big advantage over VM channel wise becase of the lack of HD on VM, and Sky was tempting for that reason. I still thought VM had the overall advantage though, plus, I've had many years of excellent service from cable and that counts for a lot in my book. But lack of HD did make me visit the Sky web site a good few times to look at options :)

Over the last year, VM have made massive strides sorting that out and from a personal prspective, sky's channel line up only has a small advantage, except for Sky Atlantc, which Id really like. But I think Virgin are right to wait until they can get it at a fair price.

Other people with different tastes may have other views, hence the need for a wide channel selection.

Rumour post: Virgin Media viewer give Media Boy some rumour information.

The following information was given to me by an Virgin Media viewer:

Quote:

premier sports to hold talks with Virgin this week as stated on their facebook page.

CBS channels to be added before April (slight delay from what I've heard)

ESPN to wait until the summer before launching ESPN 2 & ESPN Sports News and red button

Various SD & HD channels will be added "within the next 2/3 months as talks are on going regarding new channels" from a Virgin supervisor in CS.
My Insider has ''Not seen anything official.'' about any of the channels listed in this post.

I hope they all launch but until I know the deal that the broadcaster has signed with Virgin Media all is just an rumour.

That how I have put them under the Banner: ''The following channels are rumoured to be launching or in talks with Virgin Media (But still not confirm by Insiders)''.

Got it one, Passingbat. What we want is programme choice and I for one don't care how I get it (except that it should be through VM because I don't want to be paying multiple subscriptions).

When I visit my daughter (who has Sky, only because she can't get cable in her area) we are amazed constantly by how little choice we have, despite the abundance of channels.

The reason for this is that most channels are either totally rubbish or have a very small number of good programmes on them. Even 'popular' channels like Sky 1 only have one or two programmes that I record because most of the schedule is not of any interest to me.

However, you can build a schedule on the recorder from the complete range of channels that are available to us, and supplement these with the video on demand selection.

What I hope will happen in the near future is:

1. The TV Choice section of VOD will be massively enhanced to include a huge range of archived series. If we have to pay extra for some programmes, so be it.

2. Catch up TV going back one month, perhaps with whole series on there rather than just the last show.

3. The new TIVO boxes enabling us to get a huge selection of new films and TV series via video streaming through the likes of Lovefilm, thus avoiding the Sky stranglehold on such programming.

All of this will set Virgin Media apart from all other TV platforms and we will no longer be subject to the Sky monopoly on 'exclusive' films and programmes.

That means that I can subscribe to Lovefilm (or a similar alternative supplier) and leave the rest to Freeview. This will enable VM to charge a reasonable amount for such use and make a better profit. Win, win.

This is my dream - hopefully it will come true before I die!

1. certainly possible

2. VN's BBC iPlayer already offers "series catch-up" via the red button (can also find programmes in A-Z) other broadcasters may follow this

3. again, very possible. VM are talking to a lot of providers at the moment.. so watch this space as they say :)

I'm a bit 'Hmmmmm' and 'errrrrrr' about the lack of channel choices. One one hand I think I wouldn't mind watching something on Virgin that hasn't got the channel but on the other hand I think 'I mean, how much TV can you actually watch!?!??!!'

The one saving grace is some of the channels that I would watch, I do via my FTA Sat receiver or FreeSat box such as The Vault, The Food Network or the other CBS channels and my daughter likes Scuzz.

Having said that...that's one thing I cannot understand - why are these happily FTA on Sat but a no show on VM?

Maybe it's too expensive for many FTA channels to launch on VM, or perhaps VM prefer to predominantly carry Pay TV channels, perhaps the launch of the exceptionally niche Cinemoi French premium film channel is nod in that direction, I don't know really.

An engineer suggested there are still capacity issues on certain parts of the network too but it's slowly being rectified.

BSkyB's deal with ITV for ITV2, ITV3 and ITV4 HD is non-exclusive.

ITV confrim today that Sky deal to carry the HD Channels of ITV2, ITV3 and ITV4 is non-exclusive.

But the ITV chief executive, Adam Crozier would not be drawn on any discussions with Virgin Media to offer the HD channels to its cable TV customers.

The fact that he wouldn't be drawn on any discussions could be a good sign.

Let's not run before we can walk and get channels already announced as 'coming soon' months ago onto the network!

Post 43 didn't fill me and others with confidence either.

Isn't analogue about to be fully turned off in the remaining regions, I suspect that is what they are waiting for, before reaching agreements for new channels?

Because I am really bored I fired off a very nice enquiry email to see if there's any news, i'll let you all know.

If they just said it's been canned and explain why that would be fair enough as obviously things change, and when the other lot are involved I would guess things can get tricky but you can't just say something like that nearly 8 months ago and leave it at that.

Not in my opinion anyway, we'll see.

Ok thanks for that, does seem rather a long wait without any news whatsoever even if the only news was we are not going to carry sky arts HD ,8 months is a lot of time even media boy i think has said his insiders have not given him any info for months on this one.

Unless when TiVo is more up and running they plan to launch a feast of new channels/features.:)

The BBC is to rebrand BBC Radio 7 as BBC Radio 4 Extra in April.

You can find BBC Radio 7 on Virgin Channel 910.

Sky to sell off SKY NEWS in order to sweeten the deal into them buying all of SKY TV Company.

They've also said they will subsidise Sky News for years to come... Jeremy *unt the Secretary of State for Media looks like he will approve Sky's takeover....

So they will "subsidise"... pretty much means they will STILL have their finger in the editorial pie to me.....

Sky News is a loss making channel, so that's probably why they are going to fund it still...

Interesting times ahead.

EDIT: Newsflash on BBC News just now... News Corp are likely to be given green light in BSkyB take-over bid after agreeing to sell Sky News and continue to offer financial support.

As long as Sky News can continue I will be happy, whoever owns it.

This whole review is about competition issues. For me it would be an absolute disaster if a country like our's ended up one domestic news channel, and even worse one run by the state broadcaster.

Where would the competition be in that?

I doubt ITV would. Been there, done it and it didn't work.

Not sure if this has been posted yet but it's from Adam Crozier in connection with ITVs results

Quote:

ITV has also earmarked £6m for a development fund for the digital channels ITV2, ITV3 and ITV4. Last year ITV struck a deal to put HD versions of its digital channels on BSkyB's pay platform.

The deal is non-exclusive, but Crozier would not be drawn on any discussions with Virgin Media to offer the HD channels to its cable TV customers

I doubt the branding would matter too much, there are lot's of Canal+ branded channels in Europe yet Canal+ have nothing to do with them, they did once but because they are established they kept the branding. Let's face it Virgin Group don't really have that much of a capital interest in VM do they, it's mostly just a licensing agreement isn't it?

I don't dispute what has been reported here but commentators seem to be of the view BSkyB would actually continue to own Sky News but editorial responsibility would be handed over to an independent trust.

We will find out soon enough I guess.

Sky News will be spun off into a separate company "independently" governed and managed, except Murdoch will still fund it.

Seems a total waste of time. The government should allow Murdoch to buy all of Sky or not and stop this messing about. Murdoch has always controlled Sky anyway, so whether he owns 40% or 100% is neither here or there.

NDS (who actually News Corp don't even own a controlling share in anymore) already have the Mediahighway middleware platform which is far more widely employed than Tivo software so I couldn't imagine them wanting to buy Tivo. Curiously Mediahighway isn't used by Sky though, they use Nagra's Open TV but NDS didn't own Mediahighway when Sky Digital started.

But you never know with Uncle Rupe I guess.

As we suspected yesterday given the media analysis that is pretty much what has happened.

The new Sky News holding company, Newco, who will run it independently of BSkyB, shares be offered to BSkyB stockholders with News Corp retaining 39% (as they do now) so it is much as was expected. And of course they will licence the Sky News brand, again much as expected.

I felt the BBC were (as usual on this subject) somewhat jumping the gun with their report yesterday, I don't feel they have been particularly impartial during this process.

At least Sky News will continue which has got to be good news.

But Digger Murdoch is going to have to dig deeper to get BSkyB though, forget £7 a share try £8.50!

Murdoch said they are the best Pay TV company in the world which they may well be, but given the rising shareprice I bet he wishes he hadn't bigged it up so much!

Cheers for the update MB.

With regards to capacity free'd up from analogue cessation, back in ITV Digital days I was under the impression that 1 analogue terrestrial channel used up about as much spectrum as 1 DTT multiplex (which could then carry 6 SD channels, now 8 or 9 I think). Does this logic carry over to Cable?

If it does, we should be due a rather large influx of channels, surely?

Some of the spectrum freed up will have been used for 100Mbit, upstream improvements and the 10Mbit connection in the TiVo boxes

It won't all go on new channels

News Corp given green light to buy BSkyB

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/business-12631875

Quote:

Rupert Murdoch's News Corporation has been given government approval for its controversial takeover of BSkyB.

The green light follows News Corp's offer to spin off Sky News as an independent company.

The decision follows concerns about the concentration of media outlets in the hands of one organisation.

Rival UK media groups dismissed News Corp's offer as a "whitewash" and said they would "vigorously contest" the takeover.

---------- Post added at 13:09 ---------- Previous post was at 13:05 ----------

The new structure for Sky News will be as follows:

• Sky News will be spun off as an independent UK public limited company with its shares publicly traded;

• Shares in the new company will be distributed to shareholders of BSkyB in the same proportions as their shareholding in BSkyB. As a result, News Corporation would retain the same shareholding in Sky News as it currently holds in BSkyB – a 39% economic interest and 37% voting interest;

• BSkyB will provide a 10-year carriage agreement which will give the new company a substantial long-term revenue stream;

• BSkyB will license the Sky News brand to the new company and will also provide facilities and support services "on arms-length terms";

The governance structure of the new company, Newco, will include:

• A board with a majority of independent non-executive directors;

• An independent non-executive chairman;

• A commitment to the principle of editorial independence and integrity that will be enshrined in the articles of association;

• Approval by the board of the hiring and firing of the editor of Sky News;

• A corporate governance and editorial committee, including an independent board member with senior editorial and/or journalistic experience, which will be responsible for overseeing compliance and advising the board on provisions relating to editorial independence

If they just said it's been canned and explain why that would be fair enough as obviously things change, and when the other lot are involved I would guess things can get tricky but you can't just say something like that nearly 8 months ago and leave it at that.

Not in my opinion anyway, we'll see.

Further to my post yesterday.

I just got a call from the CEO's office.

Basically we are not getting Sky Arts HD anytime soon. Despite VM announcing we would be they now say there are issues along the lines of Sky Atlantic HD, it's too expensive but hope to get it in the future. The young chap did kindly give me his direct number and advised to maybe call back in 6 months time for an update. I won't be bothering!

Very, very disappointing and perhaps this dosen't bode well for future channel launches but there you go.

At least I know not to keep expecting it every month!

So as part of the Sky basics deal VM were really only given permission to negotiate that all, price too high (in VM view) so no deal and so only SD version is available.

Good information there.

I personally think VM should stop chasing Sky HD channels now and concentrate on the others, although I appreciate some are part Sky owned too.

IMO Sky know TiVo blows them out of the water technology wise so are pulling out all the stops to make sure they have as many channels over VM as possible to retain customer share.

Re: Coming Soon to Virgin TV (2011) Vol. I.

I really don’t expect VM to secure any more Sky controlled/own HD channels for the foreseeable future as Sky just value those at a higher value VM is prepared to pay. VM did the best it did when the Sky basics was negotiated and at least we ended up with Sky One HD, Sky Sports 1 and 2 HD.

Even when I expect a deal is done eventually on Sky Atlantic, I will not be surprised to find it is for the SD version only.

With the Tivo threatening Sky’s view of their own users TV viewing experience (by comparispon with Tivo), they will want to hold as many exclusive cards they can and pricing HD channels beyond VMs reasonable financial reach is a tactic I expect. Either VM say no deal to Sky or it’ another big fall out and back to the courts again but I don’t expect that.

However, there are still plenty of other HD channels VM have not signed up yet outside Sky, e.g. ITV2 to 4 HD. So VM should focus their efforts elsewhere to increase the HD viewing base for its customers.

On a side note though, VM need to make sure its Tivo box can upscale SD as best as possible then, as I’ve read variable reports on its performance with SD channels versus a user’s previous box. My SA V+ gives excellent upscaled SD on my Sony HX803 TV making the impact of higher quality PQ on HD channels less of an impact. So as long as I get this on the Tivo box (when I finally get the call!) I’ll be happy, but a general message VM needs to take note off if they cannot secure HD content channels of interest to VM TV subscribers.
