Any news on Premier Sports?

I'm totally gutted. I've just read that ESPN have sold the rights to ESPN Friday Fight Night to Premier Sports for the next 2 years. ESPN Friday Fight Nights is the only live boxing ESPN UK ever show. I can't believe they've sold the UK broadcast rights of their own bloody show to a competitor, a competitor I can't yet subscribe to on Virgin Media. For me personally, Premier Sports is now a more attractive channel than ESPN in terms of what I like to watch.

Extreme sports show TNA Xplosion which I think is like a highlights show with the odd match thrown in - willing to be corrected though as I don't watch it. They also show the PPV's. But TNA iMPACT! (the weekly show in the same vein as WWE Raw) is shown on Bravo on saturday nights.

I see that VM are putting more Tivo stuff up, have a look and see what it says next to the sign in button http://tv.virginmedia.com/vtvapp/epg.do

Also I see from the new Tivo blog that VM are demanding exclusive Spotify rights for the UK, I would have thought that Spotify would be too big to limit themselves to just one provider http://virgintivo.blogspot.com/2010/...-tivo-may.html

Yeah the remote recording was mentioned in the TiVo Thread.

I'm going to say Spotify will take the deal, there leaked finical didn't look too good and there having problems making the deals to launch in the US. This would be a great inroad to ALOT of new customers.

Spotify is incredible. I assume the exclusive deal will be for "TV" based subs. It's widely available through your PC and mobile devices.

I e-mailed Virgin about adding Premier Sports to their line-up and got the following:

"I apologise that you are unable to watch Premier Sports via Virgin.

"Unfortunately we don't currently have a contract with the channel provider in order to add this channel to our line up. But we are always changing our channel line up and it may be added in the future."

More people might be interested in Premier Sports shortly. Whilst everything is seemingly quiet regarding the future of TNA wrestling on SKY, Premier Sports are preparing to snap up the rights should they become available along with the UK broadcast rights to K-1. Saw it on their Facebook page last week. Probably just speculation, so it'll fight into this thread nicely :D

@HD addicted

I'm actually upbeat about the feedback I received. I last submitted my interest about 8 weeks ago and was essentially told there was no plans to carry Premier Sports due to little interest. Also it was viewed as a niche channel.

All we can do is keep on asking.

Hi first post. I'm on VIP 20 and 6 months into contact. Can I upgrade yo VIP50. Is it worth it? Also can I exchange my 2nd sd box for a standard v hd box and modem for media superhub at no extra cost. Please advise.

I have asked about it too and received a similar reply. It probably is a niche channel but the launch of Cinemoi (which surely fits into that category) gives me hope VM are looking to add less mainstream programming.

I know I felt the same... Also many people go digital for a better choice of sports channel, Premium sport would be another reason to subscribe VM!

Think you can upgrade to it but not downgrade.

I would have thought the media hub will be free as you are upgrading your bb to 50mb. As for he VHD you will have to ask them

Virgin carry MUTV at £6.00 per month. Surely this is more of a niche channel than Premier Sports. I'm pretty sure Premier Sports would attract better subscription figures than MUTV and Cinemoi put together!

Sorry for going off topic, but I'm passionate about Premier Sports:)

Plus just to add to this is that SKY do not take full control the VMTV channels until January so we should be able to access the red button shortly after.

You're correct. There is a couple of free versions but if you want content offline or on a mobile device you have to go premium.

Apprentally Premier Sports signed a deal with ESPN to carry their 'Friday Night Fights' show for 2 years which used to air on ESPN UK either live or in delay due to there scheduling clashes (usually clashes with NBA).

Very disappointed with ESPN, they have shown no commitment to Boxing in the UK and looks unlikely now that an ESPN 2 will launch if they are giving away rights that they own for up 2 years. If an ESPN 2 was launching they would have saved rights for that to enhance content on the channel.

Would like to have Premier Sports on VM for the Boxing and Copa Sudamericana coverage they have which are ignored by Sky and ESPN.

Seems that people on content team at VM make decisions based on their personal opinions rather than what viewers want... could list of a bunch of channels that they dont carry that many people want but refuse to carry.

This is a pay channel and unless was gonna made free on XL I cant see what the issue would be carrying it... MUTV has only 60k subs and I would love to how many of them on VM... very few I bet! ;)

I'm totally gutted. I've just read that ESPN have sold the rights to ESPN Friday Fight Night to Premier Sports for the next 2 years. I can't believe they've sold the UK broadcast rights of their own bloody show to a competitor, a competitor I can't yet subscribe to on Virgin Media. Yep I agree, gutted about that. Shown no commitment to Boxing in UK yet would rather force feed us American college sports, MLB & NHL which nobody really cares about. Much bigger fanbase for Boxing in UK than those sports put together. Sky get great figures for Boxing and so did Setanta... I dont get why they keep ignoring the sport.

Reckon an ESPN 2 isnt coming now as if there was they would never hand over the rights for something they own to a competitor for 2 years!

Saw it on their Facebook page last week. Probably just speculation, so it'll fight into this thread nicely :D

On an online focus group for ESPN that i'm part of said they were looking at TNA for an potential ESPN 2 they were gonna launch and were asking people's views on it. This was back in October and they also mentioned South American football but Premier snapped up Copa Libertadores... leaves Copa Sudamericana, South American Friendlies and Copa America left to nab and possibly Brazilian or Argentinan league rights.

Dont see ESPN launching an extra channel right now so leaves Premier open to nab a bunch of rights that I mentioned above as well likes of IPL Cricket, French Ligue 1 football etc to pad out their offering.

There are three tiers for Spotify subscriptions. The free one, useable only on your PC, includes the occasional radio type adverts (usually one after 5 songs or so). I hope Spotify don't expect you to pay for the premium version just so we can enjoy the service on TV. I would just hook up my laptop to my stereo and ads don't really bother me.

I did consider paying for the top version, so I can use my phone and store songs off-line too, but will wait and see what VM announce.

Sort of , Alba does mean Scotland in Gaelic but BBC Alba is a Scottish Gaelic launguage TV service and MB is quite right to say it is a joint venture with MG Alba.

Is it on freeview in Scotland?
I would have thought that in areas where it is spoken would be outside of VM's cable network anyway. It can be viewed online via BBC1 player if anyone wants to watch it.

Correction I DO! I am a big basketball fan and watch NBA regularly on ESPN, ESPN America barely shows any NBA apart from a highlights show as they dont have pan-European rights.

Because you WORK for Cable Forum dont presume to SPEAK for others either! Quite clearly that is your opinion and your comment I found a little rude to be honest.

If you did a poll on the site you quite clearly see most people would prefer Boxing to Ice Hockey or Baseball. ESPN are an American company who run an American sports channel. Because people complained on this and Digital SPy forum they kept the channel. Lets be honest they kept it coz they had to... charging sub fees for 1 channel after Setanta had more rights and were offering 12-14 channels on Sky and VM meant people were getting royally ripped off!

Check the BARB viewing figures of ESPN America and UFC have already said that the 2nd most watched sport in ESPN UK is the UFC showing that combat sports are very popular on the channel. Have been occasions down to scheduling conflicts that NHL or MLB has been given priority over Boxing which I find incredible as the ratings for them are a blip.

I tend to watch ESPN America for magazine shows like Sportscentre, NBA Tonight, Sportsnation etc for another basketball fix but college basketball doesnt really interest me that much.

Get set for some Christmas crackers with Virgin Media TV On Demand
Virgin Media today announced a wide range of festive treats this Christmas through its TV on Demand line-up, featuring a month packed with must-see series, movies, music and kids shows. The launch of Demand Five in November makes Virgin Media the only on demand platform to carry catch-up for the full set of terrestrial channels, so there’ll be no excuse for missing the finals of The X Factor or Strictly Come Dancing, The Doctor Who Christmas Specials, or even the latest episode of Neighbours.
December highlights for TV Choice on Demand include the entire first seasons of popular U.S series 30 Rock, Heroes, House, The Office U.S and Lipstick Jungle as Virgin Media launches its all-new ‘US Box Sets’ collection. For the best comedy this Christmas, customers can catch-up on the first three seasons of The Big Bang Theory from WarnerTV, as well as every single episode ever of The Inbetweeners from 4oD.
Virgin Media Movies On Demand has some extra special HD and 3D blockbusters this Christmas including Christopher Nolan’s mind blowing Inception andthe third instalment of The Twilight Saga, Eclipse:both available the same day as their DVD release. Everyone’s favourite band of anarchical heroes The A-Team make an appearance late in the month, and there’s plenty more action as Tom Cruise teams up with Cameron Diaz in Knight and Day.
For those lucky enough to find a shiny new 3D TV under the tree, we’ve got a dance extravaganza in store as Step Up 3D joins Streetdance 3D on the 12th. And if you’re looking for something a little more festive Disney’s A Christmas Carol 3D will be available all month long. As an added Christmas bonus, from December 13th, we’re also doubling the value for our FilmFlex customers – customers will now have 48hrs instead of 24hrs to watch their favourite films.
Virgin Media’s Big Movie Weekend is also back from the 31st December to the 3rd January, giving customers the chance to see in the New Year with a host of this year’s biggest movies and a great value night in. For anyone fed-up of turkey leftovers, ordering a movie over this period from the ‘Big Movie Weekend’ folder in Movies on Demand will earn a 25% discount from a favourite takeaway through http://www.just-eat.co.uk*/. With a ‘Best of 2010’ theme, films to choose from include Inception, Sex and the City 2 and The Karate Kid.
Music fans will be able to indulge in a Rihanna Takeover in Music On Demand this month, where she talks about her new album, Loud, including her collaboration with Drake. Virgin Media has also lined up some Christmas classics from Bing Crosby to Wham! to watch in the ‘Christmas Crackers’ folder, and for families who would like to sing along to their favourites this festive season, the ‘Xmas Karaoke’ folder has everything from ‘All I Want For Christmas is You’ to ‘Frosty the Snowman’: all available throughout December.
The festive season wouldn’t be the same without classic Christmas comedy specials so Virgin Media has lined up a full festive feast of episodes in a new ‘Ultimate Christmas’ collection featuring Father Ted, Catherine Tate, Little Britain and Friends, as well as many more classics. And for families looking to occupy the kids there’s the ‘Ultimate Kids Christmas’ collection to spoil them as Virgin Media presents an enormous collection of old and new episodes from shows such as Tom and Jerry, The Flintstones, Garfield and Dr Seuss’: How the Grinch Sold Christmas.

MUTV has only 60k subs and I would love to how many of them on VM... very few I bet! ;)

This is from the Premier Sports website:

"Premier Sports TV is the new home of boxing in the UK. Starting in January we have 28 Friday Night Fight events live from America and the World Series of Boxing. Combined with monthly shows from HBO and independent promoters we can supply 50+ fights per year for only £6.99 per month."

That's way more shows than SKY Sports offer in a year.

Isn't it a term used in the UK? - Who says?

Feel 'justified' if you like, but I will quite happily accept either term to describe the game.

Yeah, they are having trouble with this. it takes 8-10 hours to download the content to your RHE. While they do this, they can't update Catch-up TV or any other On Demand to your area.

Work has to be done out of hours to resolve it. It should have been done today, but was postponed from what I can gather (not in work, but spoke to a colleague).

I'll get the reference for you in a sec....

I am so sorry if I have upset you by using the term "Soccer" it was simply used to differentiate between the two types of football, however ,as "soccer" is used the world over to describe the game, I will continue to use it!.

I'm not upset and obviously you can call football anything you want:D

I know the name 'Soccer' is used in many countries, specifically countries that came to football late and already had another game that they referred to as football. But answer me this, if it was only countries such as Australia, Canada and NOT the US would you be using it so freely now? No I didn't think so;)

According to the Digital Spy story "ITV1+1 will commence broadcasting on all digital TV platforms on January 11, 2011". There have been a few incorrect stories over there of late though...

Not bad, I think that's just over a tenner less than the advertised price assuming you just have 1 additional V+ although that dosen't include Sky HD on the second box so it would be about £17 less if you do which would be even better.

Does the 50mb involve an engineer install, if so that's really quick isn't it.

Maybe that and a period of exclusivity with Sky, a bit like Film4 HD which still hasn't appeared on Sky five months after it's launch on VM.

Mind you ITV2/3/4 HD don't seem to be impressing a lot of their viewers if the DS forums are anything to go by.

The viewing figures were pretty bad to when I looked a few weeks ago. I have just had another look and there are no viewing figures at all now shown on barb for ITV hd 2 the last ones available were for the week ending 14th November http://www.barb.co.uk/report/weeklyTopProgrammes? The top viewing figure was 37000.

As Rugby Football (Rugger for short - "a hooligans' game played by gentlemen") pre-dates Association Football (Soccer for short - "a gentleman's game played by hooligans") as the first formalised football game in English Public Schools, the latter should really always be referred to in full to distinguish it from the former or any other game of football. However, since it's mass adoption by hooligans, it has become the default when the term football is used without qualification in England.

Cricket is the national sport of England, despite what football aficionados tend to spout around World Cup time (1966 and 2010) or World Cup hosting bid time.

So what are the national sports of the other constituent countries of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland?

Maybe but even Discovery HD's viewing figures are very low, in fact most HD channels don't get very high audiences yet but I suppose that is to be expected really but perhaps not as bad as ITV2 HD though.
