I was under the impression that the 4 to 10Mb upgrades were complete.

I take it that you have done the standard check of rebooting your modem? You may wish to check what your modem configuration is by going to 192.168.100.1 (pass words root/root) and seeing what your Maximum Downstream Data Rate is in the Operation Config. section. 10240000 =10Mb.

Other than that post the details of your modem and check with the VM techs here that your modem can handle 10Mb as some can't.

Even the sb3100 can handle 7Mbs although it is the slowest day round here tonight since the upgrade. There's also the issue of whether your wireless connection will do 10Mbs.

They acheved the deadlines by changing their method. Previously they have done the capacity upgrades first and then done the 10mb upgrade. Tis time, probably to ensure that the deadline was achieved they did it about face and the capacity upgrade are schedules for the next week or so ( see maintenance schedules at VM ) in the meantime those people oin those areas will at times suffer significatnly less than 10mb speeds

But

a)probaby still better than the 4mb

b)probably wont tell the difference between that and a STM:D

Re: Virgin 4Mb to upgrade to 10Mb February - Summer

I am currently receiving my BB via a Samsung STB. Consequently, I cannot make use of the 10MB upgrade. I called customer services tonight and they have arranged for a self install SACM to be sent out to me. I should have it by Wednesday, only trouble is that if UPS don't leave it in the porch it might end up being returned to sender. I am out at work all day. Cross that bridge if/when I get to it.

Anyway, is it easy to fit? What is involved? I assume that the coax is split between the STB and wall box. My Ethernet cable then is transferred from the STB to the SACM. Some form of download must take place to initiate the change over, how's that for a guess?

Is there anything I should be aware of before I make any connections?

Any advice would be appreciated. Thank you.

UPS will leave a card for you arrange another time for delivery.

The kit comes with everything you need with instructions and you need to call Quickstart to register your modem on 0800 953 9500.

Also make sure you make a note of the MAC address on the cable modem before you call them, it saves scrabbling on the floor trying to find it with the operator on the phone :)

WDINAT - if I finally give in & arrange for an SACM to be sent, will they send me one that's only suitable for my speed or one that will do 10/20MB?

You will get in all probability an Ambit 256 which is 20mb capable if you ever feel the urge.

All modems issued are 20mb capable.

Well. Phoned VM on Monday 6/10 and ordered a self install pack for my "free 10MB upgrade" (currently on 4MB). SACM came today 8/10 @ 10:00, installed within 30 minutes including time on phone to have it enabled.
Speed tests confirm I am now on 10MB.

That has to be the easiest upgrade I have done in a very long time.

Full marks to VM.

Of course, I will have to make sure my bill is correct, and hasn't been "cocked-up".

After such a happy ending ("all's well...", and all that) surely we can't end this excellent thread with the words: "cocked up"?

How about a fire works salute to the end of the 4Mb to upgrade to 10Mb upgrade?

Don't speak too soon - routing issues (you should see where I get sent on Neotraces to look at virgin's own servers - round trip of Europe!) and capacity issues mean a fair few folks in the wakefield area despite having 10Mb config files on their modems are still only getting 4Mb downstream... s'been logged with support... affects multiple UBRs in wakefield area. At best I can get just below 4Mb connectivity, but majority of time it's 2Mb or worse... upstream however is fantastic! Noise levels and everything else check out fine. Tx levels are high in this area which isn't helping (joys of asynchronicity - saturate the upstreams and the downstreams start falling). Waiting for UBR upgrades basically. S'at 2nd line support at the mo afaik.

Re: Virgin 4Mb to upgrade to 10Mb February - Summer

Well I never said the upgrade was successful, but it has finished. :)

If you want to discuss the problems following the unsuccessful upgrade in your area it may be better to start a new thread. It's easier for members to find a thread if it's Title is more relevant to the problem and it may be that M and LX BB subscribers are also having similar issues.

Hope you get sorted soon.

I have recieved my 10meg upgrade and I am getting roughly between 8-10meg on speedtest.net. I currently have an old NTL Home 120 modem and VM have sent me a new Ambit 256 - so the question is do I swap it out or not?

Sometimes you get that if it ain't broke feeling ...

Cheers guys - Jay

You really should swap that modem as the NTL120 is quite old and tired and you have received a Ambit 256 a state of the art modem, it goes without saying get it swapped onto your account.

When the new modem arrives you will need to call Quickstart on 0800 953 9500 to get it added to your account, before you call take a note of the HFC MAC address from the sticker on the base as you will be asked for it, and connect your modem up the same way as your old one.

The new modem will also have the new settings pre-configured. Only the upload is crippled before activation.

It is a perfectly good modem and the are no issues with it at all.

I know that, but before I rang activation, I checked the settings. Downstream 10240000, Upload 1600. That's crippled. :p:

It has to have a docsis file sent to it during activation in order for the modem to give you the speed you are paying for, so anything in the config pages before activation are meaningless because up and till it is activated it is dormant and not actually on the network, remember I work here.

I dont know if this is the right place to post this question, but...

I have virgin broadband, due to be upgraded to the 10. I am currently running a belkin wireless router which provides my laptop with 54.0mbs speed, is there anything i can do/buy when my new broadband is available?

Thanks.

As long as your router is working fine then you should not need to purchase anything.

Sorry to be a bit thick, does that mean that the speed my laptop gets will increase with my upgraded broadband?
Thanks

It should increase if your router is up to the job as I said above.

You posted this in an old thread if you are talking about the 2Mb to 10Mb upgrade you should have posted in this thread. http://www.cableforum.co.uk/board/12...0-upgrade.html
