I have occasional problems with NTL (usually when everyone else is having probs ie something BIG) but I have spent MANY hours during the last 6-8 weeks trying to get some sense (!) out of Wanadoo/ Orange concerning my dad's ADSL connection. The problem is a lousy line but how to get BT to improve that I just do not know. At the moment I am trying to organise a downgrade from 1meg to 512K service in the hope that will work. |
Re: [Merged] Speed Increases 1st June - 2meg to 4meg
From my experience when working with the company, I'd say those that are not yet done (me included) will now have a very long wait.
When the upgrades in March 2005 went ahead there were still customers many months later who did not yet have their upgrade. They are more concerned with getting it available to new customers. We were told to tell anyone complaining that there was an ongoing issue with no timescale for a fix. I left a few months later so I don't know if this ever got sorted. So if you're still waiting for an upgrade....it's obvious to me the bulk got done last week. If it hasn't happened yet, get used to your current speed as it is now unlikely to change in a hurry. |

Re: [Merged] Speed Increases 1st June - 2meg to 4meg
Upgraded in Bournemouth from 2MB to 4MB a couple of days ago and I think that connections suffered for a couple of days as I had lots of problems. Seems stable now though and am getting reasonable speeds though must admit it's hard to perceive the difference when browsing. However, downloading files shows a good speed increase and running the speed test at top of page gives the results below.
Mon, 26 Jun 2006 18:13:18 UTC 1st 512K took 374 ms = 1369 KB/sec, approx 11281 Kbps, 11.02 Mbps 2nd 512K took 1016 ms = 503.9 KB/sec, approx 4152 Kbps, 4.05 Mbps 3rd 512K took 1062 ms = 482.1 KB/sec, approx 3973 Kbps, 3.88 Mbps 4th 512K took 1062 ms = 482.1 KB/sec, approx 3973 Kbps, 3.88 Mbps Overall Average Speed = approx 5845 Kbps, 5.71 Mbps Can anyone explain the abnormally high first reading though. I thought it a mistake but running direct from the server and performing at different times during the day all give a high first test reading. Because of this it artificially inflates my overall speed tp 5.71 Mbps, any thoughts. Thanks Tony |

I wouldn't mind, but change is inevitable... if NTL stayed slow then everyone would eventually go to ADSL, end of story, then they would go out of business and where would your connection be then??? Or... they could stay as they are and wait til the competition is on 100meg and make the jump then... if you think THIS is causing problems, see what the jump from 2 to 100 would do!!! Please, come up with some reasoned argument or alternative and I will listen, but stop posting the same cr*p about "I don't want it", we're sick of hearing it! I am no luddite, and I appreciate that that many people DO need faster speeds, and it is wholly right that ntl are providing them. What I don't understand is why existing customers MUST be upgraded even if they don't need to be. From reading the experiances of others, this risks changing my rock solid stable 2mb connection into an unstable fluctuating connection that's faster some days than others, assuming it works at all. That would be no good to me. I'd rather have the ability to 'opt out' and keep my current speed. Then, if I need it to be faster in the future, I can ask for it. I would even be happy to pay a small admin fee to upgrade in this 'bespoke' way should it be required. |

I know enough to know that things that shouldn't be possible do go wrong. And I also learned the hard way, from dealing with so many customers' issues....if it ain't broke don't even TOUCH it!! My modem is also an old 120. I realise it should handle 4mb easily (it used to do 3mb at one time), however, it isn't recommended for 10mb and so it does have a limit somewhere in between. It will all probably be ok anyway, I'd just prefer it if I was left alone with my 22mb until I chose differently. When I went down from 3mb to 2mb upon leaving ntl 15 months ago, there was no discernible difference whatsoever. The speed did change as the speedchecker indicated this, however you couldn't tell the difference in normal use. Therefore it's a safe bet there'll be very little if any difference when it goes to 4mb. There just isn't any point, for me personally. |

The point I wanted to make is ADSL is just as bad... look at the ADSL forums and you get no end of complaints... and ADSL has the added obstacle that it has to deal with substandard BT lines as well. I would agree that NTL has many (too many, even) outages, but I just disagreed with the rose tinted spectacle view of ADSL, that's all. Not looking for a war, just a balanced view ;) ... and for the record, I can't stand NTL at the minute either! |

OTOH, what exactly is your anecdote saying? Are you saying you know lots of people, who live in the same area as you, that have a nigh on perfect ADSL connection which presumably you could go and get? If so, why do you put up with not having it too? My NTL connection has been good for years. I'm talking a few hours downtime a year and I don't have problems sustaining 2mb downloads. If it wasn't I'd switch to something else. At the time I got NTL "something else" didn't exist and so I suffered. But today I'd have to be a complete buffoon to accept a poor internet connection given a choice. Moreso with NTL, because until they sort out CS and change their name [they've got 2 relatively untarnished ones to pick from now] it's not worth persuing issues with them. If it works, great, if it doesn't I wouldn't waste my time sitting on the phone. |

Well - after a modem reboot in Manchester (M38) this morning, my speed test results were around 3.8Mbps.
Did a "test" download from NTL newsgroups and did 750MB in around 25 minutes so looks like its quite a stable connection unlike some people have reported. Maybe at the end of the month after all the work is compete - everybody will have a rock solid (as can be) connection. I'd just like to point out that all throughout this thread I haven't once moaned and complained about NTL not giving me this FREE upgrade earlier in the month, I've just sat back, relaxed and laughed at all the whinging about it. ;) It was worth the wait! |

Re: [Merged] Speed Increases 1st June - 2meg to 4meg
Still on 2mb in WalthamForrest. Meh, NTL eh ?
Mind you, not that it would do me much good, I've been getting sub 20k downloads recently. pathetic. |
Re: [Merged] Speed Increases 1st June - 2meg to 4meg
I'm getting a constant average of 2.7 Mbps no matter what proxy I use.
I am not overly bothered but I may give it a week and if it's the same, call retentions and tell them I only want to pay "up to" £24.99. That way I may be able to pay 3/4 of it. Seems fair enough (albeit, simplistic) to me. :) |

Re: [Merged] Speed Increases 1st June - 2meg to 4meg
Mine was done when I looked briefly this morning, hmmmmm. SACMs seem to need a reboot to get it as I was rather stupid and rebooted mine.
I'm delighted to have the upgrade, as this now gives me the opportunity to roam around the forums acting like a grumpy old curmudgeon because I didn't really want it. However, I shall be able to moan much faster than I would have otherwise. |
