Is that using a STB or SACM?If it is a STB it is about right.Make sure you are not using usb for the internet.

SACM is a modem,STB is the box you get your tv through.

Well i thought the firmware was done automatically. What happens when you do a speed test without the firewall on?Try the test below:

Well i use windows built in firewall,xp sp2 version. You could try Zone alarm,it wom`t hurt to try.

guys I am trialing looknstop firewall currently, very lightweight app free 30 day trial and still runs after first 30 days with some functions disabled, so far I like it but might be bit complicated for some people. Things like zonealarm are probably bloated enough to affect your download speed on 10meg.

After the recent posts about ZoneAlarm, I decided to completely uninstall ZoneAlarm Pro from my computer to see if it made a difference - yes it did! :)

My CPU utilisation never went above 20% when downloading with ZoneAlarm Pro loaded so I wasn't expecting it to make much of a difference but my download speed increased substantially (see attached picture of 50 MB .iso download from /testmyspeed/). I hadn't uninstalled ZoneAlarm before as I'd had no problems at all at 3 Mbps or when I tested it on a 100 Mbps connection (see my first post). I've emailed ZoneAlarm's support to see if they can help me identify what the problem is but, for now, I'm just relying on XP's firewall.

Is that graph from task manager,if so it looks like you have the connection to your network card at 10 mbps.I had mine set to 100 mbps full mode and was getting 9 mbps,i put it on auto and i am now getting 9.85 mbps.If you have a STB it will be stuchk at 10 mbps anyway though.

Yes and yes, my connection speed is 10 Mbps as I've got an STB. Sorry, I should have mentioned these details in my last post but I was so happy that it's working (and even better than I expected, as it's an STB) that I forgot to include them. See post #1596 in this thread to see how bad it was before and post #1582 as to my setup details. I think the 10 Mbps limit might have something to do with the problem with ZoneAlarm but I'll see what ZoneLabs say. However, I've now arranged for a SACM to be installed in two weeks time anyway so I'll see how ZoneAlarm works then (NTL could have done it sooner but I've got too many things happening at work at the moment to have any time off).

Thanks.

I've just run it twice and my results were as follows (2nd attempt results in brackets):
Download: 7.93 (8.01) Mbps
Upload: 510 (532) kbps
Quality of Service: 94 (95) %
Round Trip time: 4506 (4508) ms
Max Pause: 16 (31) ms
A lot better than my previous results (see post #1587 in this thread).

I've done a number of speed test over the last few days. I've tried varying times of day and this is the best result I could get, although the uploed speed has been up to 36/37 generally. I have a Samsung STB so, I'm wondering if the result is as expected or, have I got something set wrong? I've tried uninstalling my firewall (Tiny Personal Firewall) and it doesn't make any difference.

Keithb-Those are very good results for the STB.Make sure when you get your SACM you get the pin number,i was on the phone for a long time, the letter came 3 days later.I suggest you get the pin number first.

Definately, I've had it confirmed by NTL. Apparently I got changed from 3Mb to 10Mb on the 14th December. As I didn't get any notification about it I didn't find out until I visited this board for the first time in a couple of months.

My connection speed is now really erratic and keeps stopping an starting briefly. I seem to get a chunk of a file, then it pauses for a split second and then takes another chunk. Downloading a 20Mb file the connection speed jumps wildly between 2.2Mb and 3.5Mb. I've spoken to tech support a few times and they have run me through a few things. Everytime they end up deciding there's a fault on the line. They then give me a fault number and say phone back in a couple of days if the problem still persists. 3 Times I've phones back now and each time the I'm told the supposed fault has been fixed and the fault number closed. I hoping I'll get lucky on my fourth call back tomorrow :)

Too be honest, I seem to be worse off after the introduction of 10Mb!!

Re: *ALL* ntl 10Mb Discussion (Part 3)

I think mine is similar to Sage. I've checked the STB and it says "QOS-Bund 03.cm" - I think it happened when I turned the box on and off the other evening.

Using the speed tests gives me very varied results:
www.irishisptest.com/myspeed/
2.22Mbps (download) 234kbps (upload)
(varies between 1-3.5Mbps, 200-440kbps)
http://www.asdlguide.org.uk/tools/speedtest.asp
450Kbps (download) 300Kbps (upload)
(varies upto 1200Kbps, and 200-300Kbps)
http://homepage.ntlworld.com/robin.d...speedtest.html
1st 128K took 219 ms = 598502 Bytes/sec = approx 4980 kbits/sec
2nd 128K took 1015 ms = 129135 Bytes/sec = approx 1074 kbits/sec
3rd 128K took 141 ms = 929589 Bytes/sec = approx 7734 kbits/sec
4th 128K took 187 ms = 700920 Bytes/sec = approx 5832 kbits/sec
http://homepage.ntlworld.com/testmyspeed
180-350KiloBytes/sec

Most of the tests I've done show that I'm averaging around 2Mbps, although Robin Walker's one is more encouraging.

Before the reboot, I consistently got readings just under 3Mbps - on all of the above tests. Now I get anything from 450-7000Kbits.

Still, at least it's working even if it is at erratic speeds. I feel I should be thankful for small mercies... ;)

Mine and my friends are exactly the same (Stoke-on-Trent ST1 area). Any kind of download does a bit, pauses a bit, does a bit more etc... averaging less than a 1MB line over the course of the download. It has been like this since about a week before christmas.

I've not rang about it yet as it seems that so many other people have that you'd have thought NTL would have recognised it as a problem by now.

I was much better off with the 3MB before the "upgrade"!! :( :(

Well, you have to admit there is something not right with the amount of people all having the same problems. I've been with NTL since they took over cable & wireless in my area (about 4-5 years ago) and have also not had a problem with them.....until they "upgraded" me from 3MB to 10MB. :(

Depends on the area you in, lucky you your area is performing well, not too clever to tell others what problems they have are rubbish because one day it can happen to you and I am sure you wouldnt appreciate people telling you what you say is rubbish.

Well I hae been on to customer services today (9-1-06) and they are adamant that the 2mb customers will not be upgraded to the 10 mb service for free as the 3mb ones are currently having done.

hey guys, thought i'd post some good news for a change :D

After waiting for NTL to contact me about the 10MB which they didnt i rang up there CS line today and got through straight away to a nice indian lady with no being put on hold.
Anyway..told her my problem that i was still on 3 MB and i thought i had a problem with my modem not being registered to me as it used to belong to my nephew when i took over his account and changed usernames etc.etc..anyway she sorted it all out and told me to go home, turn everything off and i should be on 10 Mb.

So went home...a bit sceptical like you do..lol and now my comp is on 10 Mb. I just downloaded a vid off a fast ftp server and it hit 900k at one point and my upload speed has now doubled..the upload was what i really wanted :D

So just wanted to say i was quite impressed with the service and hope other people get things sorted too :tu:

why does ntl want to close your original account and open a new onw one when you change from a stb to a sacm cs also told me that my email address would also change and pay £50 and at the moment i ahve all 3 services in one bill paid by dd they want to split it to 2 bills one for bb and one for tv and phone can they make it any more complicated

Re: *ALL* ntl 10Mb Discussion (Part 3)

Well I had to phone NTL a couple of times to get them to realise that my speed upgrade hadn't gone through properly. Yesterday I got lucky and was put through to someone in Cardiff. They removed and re-added my cable modem from their end and bang, I was on 10Mb. Then my problems began...

ADSLGuide showed my connection speed as around 8Mb, which is fine. However, when I jumped on my news server my speed had crashed completely. I used to sustain 3Mb constantly from it, around 360kbps. Now it ranges from a max of 250kbps down to a measly 8kbps... I ran a long ping to the news server and it came back with an 18% loss. I've just checked my regular gaming servers and they've all got around 60% packet loss...

Reading a number of posts in this thread it seems I'm not on my own... Has anyone had any joy in getting this poor performance fixed, or am I stuck with new 'performace'?

Just done another speed test at ADSLGuide and now show very poor results, is this what I need to expect in peak times???

Downstream 668 Kbps (83.5 KB/sec)
Upstream 130 Kbps (16.3 KB/sec)

Many TIA for any info or pointers.

As mentioned elsewhere I am also getting terrible speeds on my 10meg line now. In fact with packet loss browsing is worse than when I was on the 2 meg service.

I just hope that NTL get to the bottom of this soon before I decide to switch providers - which I am loathe to do as I prefer cable to adsl, but needs must and all that :(

Re: *ALL* ntl 10Mb Discussion (Part 3)

My usenet provider allows 10 connections, and a I still got the poor speed mentioned in my previous post. I tested again this morning and things were better. The NTLHell speedtest showed me as having 3.8Mb, better than last night, but still nowhere near what I was expecting. I kicked off a news download and my speed ranged from around 200kbps to up to about 600kbps. Again better, but still not good enough...

Ok this is getting at me now

Tried downloading from usenet - getting under 100kb/sec
Tried downloading linux distribution - getting 280kb/sec
Done ADSL guide speedtest - got 148kb/sec

Phoned NTL, told me to go to Proxy site, site gives you three options, download 1meg, 10meg, 50meg file, told me to download 50meg file, downloading it i was getting full 10mb speeds.

Then tried usenet and sites and still getting crap speeds no matter what site i go to.

I live near Nottingham, and ever since the 10mb UPGRADE :Yikes: I've enjoyed vintage internet speeds reminiscent of 56k! This is ridiculous.. I giving them the benefit of the doubt with the "maintenance" line, but I think I'll look at the many alternatives available at - let's face it - much lower prices! I've been here before with the free 3mb upgrade, but thought that that was just a one-off!

Try using Newleecher as your newsreader client as it allows you to download 1 file split into seperate parts. For example i use 15 connections(bots) with Newsleecher & Newshosting and it maxes me out.

I've pretty much decided to dump the 10Mb line and go to the 2Mb also. Atm the packet loss during peak times is making on-line gaming impossible for me...

Re: *ALL* ntl 10Mb Discussion (Part 3)

My download test is to go to http:://sunfreeware.blueyonder.co.uk then click on any version of Solaris on the right top and select gcc on right bottom,

Now select the gcc package from the main part of the screen. This is large enough to test speeds and mirrored enough so clash is not at server side.

Now I'm not suggesting everyone does this. I use Solaris and gcc so I do download it anyway. The principle is to try to grab a large file from a quiet site so the contention is not at the source.

Lastnight speedtests fluctuated from 100k to 8M. I'm on 10M with a STB and wireless though the latter should cope easily with 10M given the equipment and placement. Downloads from 200kB on symantec to 500kB+ on sunfreeware.

Not totally happy yet, want consistant 10M but not paying £50. I work for ntl.

Yep, they have great bandwidth internally, but pretty poor externally, the people I saw mostly played Lineage type games and other impenetrable seeming games on Korean servers - there is an awesome P2p type community spirit though, they send each other massive video files, they don't seem to bother with silly things like bandwidth internally, but as I say their links to outside are not so good.
Its a totally different system setup seemingly to over here.

I used to work in the National Media and we went out there a year ago for something quite different, but I saw a few home connections.

To be honest I prefer our setup over here, although it would be nice to have unmetered internal bandwidth here too for things like the Newsserver.

I'm on 10mb, And i play alot of online gaming but at around 4-10 I get packet loss...I was wondering if it's possible for me to ring NTL and ask them to Lock my connection so it doesn't keep doing this if not degrade my connection to 2mb..?

Re: *ALL* ntl 10Mb Discussion (Part 3)

I'm also seeing packet loss during the same period. I don't think there's much NTL can do about it atm, so unless it changes in the next few days I'm gonna downgrade to 2Mb...

Re: *ALL* ntl 10Mb Discussion (Part 3)

This 10mbit Upgrade seems a bit of a Failed Experiment to be honest, while it was great to be able to download something at super fast speeds, the constant changes in speed depending on what time of day you use the service is a bit bad. To explain further - I was on 10mbit until just a few days ago and grabbing some drivers etc from Variosu Sites (Dell, ASUS etc) as well as grabbing some bits and bobs from the News Servers (nothing big). Now the Speeds were very low - Indeed it was coming in @ 30KB/Sec. Now as it goes after 11pm the speeds shot up on everything bar the News Servers (NTL One.)

After my Downgrade to 2mbit - the drivers from the same site came in @ 236KB/sec and the news server were a constant 2mbit no matter what time of day I was using it. On top of this with the 10mbit service, there is that 75Gig month of course and downgrading when they get something in place to a slower speed. Maybe they preffer everybody to be on 2mbit instead and only have the 10mbit for marketing purposes?

Well i have had 10 mbit since the 3rd January,i get the speed in the link below anytime of the day.I hope i don`t start getting bad speeds. The NTL newsgroups can sometimes be slow though.

Do you think degrading to 2mb will stop the packet loss?

Re: *ALL* ntl 10Mb Discussion (Part 3)

Nice speed you're getting there fire!

manfredojr, when I was on 3Mb I had very little packet loss, usually none. From comments in this forum, other forums and friends on 2Mb, it seems like a stable connection.

My speed is a lot better this evening though, but only around 400kbps. My packet loss has also dropped from around 60% to about 15%. So things may be improving, perhaps I'll hold on a little longer before downgrading.

Lately when ive been surfing or downloading, my connection just stops, the lights all stay lit on cable modem, but i lose connection to the outside world.

This is very annoying, at first I thought it might be a problem with the NIC card, but this happens on all 3 I have tried!

This is becoming a very regular occurance now, I will contact Tech Support tomorrow, but before I do could I ask you guys to look at the attached cable modem config screenshot and tell me if they are the correct values?

What should these readings be on 10Meg?
Do these look correct?

Many Thanks

Rik

as i said in of sections of this forum i have now downgraded to 2mg and its quite stable gettin constant 230k etc but upload suks at 11k ish:( but hey considering the speeds given to people on 10mg connection 2mg line is super:P ntl really need to get there fingers out of the backsides and sort these issues out now, when the last engineer came round he actually admitted that they had a lot of speed problems in a lot of areas and they were desperately tryin to work on the exchanges and put out patches but until that happens they can shove there 10mg where the sun dont shine:P
such a poor poor rollout no wonder most are going to 2mg...i could go on but i got some time to look at other isp options:)

I have 10mbit 5 days and pings 10-100ms ~50 to uk constantly all the time since first day, even to first ntl server on my tracert I have like 60ms even. When I’m connecting my old broadband I have got 20-30ms constantly so this is not my pc fault. I called ntl, they can’t help me because my ping is lower than the limit – 100ms. What is happening when my download limit is over, broadband is lagging? Maybe somehow my limit is gone? What may be a reason so bad ping respond times all the time? Maybe my modem is broken? ANY ideas are welcome, I don’t want brake agreement. Please HELP.

Salemen should be banned from selling internet services out in the open. They've no clue what they are selling they just take whatever seems the easiest way to make a sale for the most part.

One day you won't be able to find salesmen that are slimy lying *$£%$. Then again pigs also could levitate :)

The easy way to sort this or course is just to stop paying based on commission.

This isn't just an ntl problem btw, Bulldog's salesbots have no compunction about lying their rear ends off to get you to buy their product.

I'm in a state of shock. For weeks now I've been doing the Irsh speed test and not got higher than 2.7Mb. I've just tried it now and got 7.83Mb, on a Samsung STB, at 7.00pm on a Saturday!!! unfortunately the upload speed was 160kbps so that still sucks.

I tried it again another 8 times and for the next 5 tries I hit between 6.5Mb and 7.7Mb. However, I'm a little concerned with the 6th attempt which was 362kbps but, as the next 2 were back to around 7Mb I'm hoping it was a one off.

I'm in the Watford area so, seeing as other people are getting good speeds, maybe ntl are slowly getting things sorted out around the country bit by bit.

As an update to my earlier posts concerning erratic downloads speeds with ZoneAlarm since my stb was upgraded to 10 Mb (it was fine wihout ZoneAlarm installed), I got an ntl: 250 sacm installed today and downloads with ZoneAlarm installed are stable again. I'm guessing that there was some kind of network overhead issue using ZoneAlarm on my 10 Mbps connection to the stb which is not an issue when using a 100 Mbps connection to the sacm.

Ok, so I'm getting up to 8Mb now on occasion, 4Mb more regularly, unfortunately I'm also getting a complete loss of service for 5-10 seconds every couple of minutes. Still, I suppose sort of heading the right direction.

This is a bit off topic but, if STB users can only get up to 5Mb, why dont ntl just create a 5Mb package for people with STB's? (Ok so the obvious answer is why charge someone £30pm when you know you can get £38pm out of them)

After that I expect I'll be talking to customer services and downgrading to 1Mb until I hear that the problems have been resolved.

USB 1.1 is max 12mbs, usb 2 is 400 odd, so you should be fine with either.

Still better going ethernet though, more stable, less hassle with drivers etc.

Re: *ALL* ntl 10Mb Discussion (Part 3)

If you've been reading this topic for a while then you've probably seen my other posts. Here's an update on my situation.

I've only been getting between 1-3Mb for weeks now, apart from one 24 hour period where it was 6-7Mb (shame it didn't last). I got board trying to get through to custoerm services so I thought I'd give Tech Support a call for a laugh. After getting past the "have you tried rebooting your pc" and router question (I don't have one). The chap in India said that it's a problem between my STB and PC bacause the STB is definately receiving at 5Mb, the signal must be losing power somewhere. After a number of other test he said he would chaneg my IP address and put me on another sever (L1 whatever that means). If that didn't work then he'd arrange for the STB to be replaced becuase it must be faulty.

So, PC turned off and plug pulled out the STB, then waited the half hour he said. I then rebooted everything, disabled then enabled the LAN and then expected to have to re-register my PC on the NTL netwoek like the chap said. However, no re-regestering was needed and my IP address didn't change. So, called tech support again and explained this to a lady. She went though a couple of things then asked me to hold on a moment.

Whilst I was waiting I decided to try a couple of speed test quickly (the one on this board and the one at irishisptest.com). To my suprise I'm now getting speeds of 5-7Mb quite consistently. I advised this to the lady and she said it's not possible on a Samsung STB.

After doing the two test again half a dozen times I still got the same results. She said this was fantastic speeds for a STB at which point I said I'll leave things alone and see how it goes.

So, biting your tongue when speaking to Tech Support can actually help if you give them a chance. As for my speeds, I've experienced the improvement once before and it didn't last!!!

2 days and you're giving up!!!! Have you actually phoned TS??? If you have, what have they tried????

As for me, my speed is still as it's supposed to be, I think. 4-5Mb if tested here at Cable Forums and 6-8Mb if I use irishisptest.com. when I was having a problem both of them gave just about the same results. Anyone know the difference between the these two test and why they might vary so much.

Also, does anyone know of where I can download a 30Mb+ file from that's on a site that has the ability to upload at 10Mb?? I've tried a few sites and I only download at 2-2.5Mb, which is contrary to the speed test results I get. However, I don't know whether this is the max speed the site will do.

Re: *ALL* ntl 10Mb Discussion (Part 3)

On USB versus Ethernet, I believe most NTL cable modems only support USB 1.1, which has a 12 megabit/s limit. USB is inherently half-duplex and the figure does not include overheads for packetisation etc, etc both at USB and TCP/IP level. That is why it is a bottleneck and unlikely to top 4-5 Mbit/s throughput.

Well, the situation I have now is that two sites (here and kbps.co.uk) that say I'm running at 3Mb (approx) and two sites (irishisptest.com and adlsguide) that say I'm runnning at 5Mb (approx). Whichever is right, unless ntl install a SACM for free, I'm going to downgrade to 2Mb. However, having a problem in finding the right people to speak to at ntl at present.

= 3.18 Mbps [Megabit-per-second]

Well, the situation I have now is that two sites (here and kbps.co.uk) that say I'm running at 3Mb (approx) and two sites (irishisptest.com and adlsguide) that say I'm runnning at 5Mb (approx). Whichever is right, unless ntl install a SACM for free, I'm going to downgrade to 2Mb. However, having a problem in finding the right people to speak to at ntl at present.

This is what I get

File size transferred : 14.75 MB (15468724 bytes)
Total time taken : 12.64 seconds (12640 milliseconds)
Throughput : 1223.0 KB/sec [Kilobyte-per-second]
= 1.22 MB/sec [Megabyte-per-second]
= 9784.0 Kbps [Kilobit-per-second]
= 9.78 Mbps [Megabit-per-second]

After phoning TS last Saturday, and both me and Karuna , (by-the-way TS in India) trying to sort it out, she came to the conclusion that the fault lies at NTL's end, and that she will pass this info on to the right department. I did however this morning at around 11am have a very good stable connection of 1.2mbps but after getting home this evening and doing the same tests... well u can see the results I got in my other post. I'll give them another call tomorrow if things haven't changed. :fit:

hmm out of 10000+ users on this forum there must be 20-30 having proper problems (discounting those with router issues and what not) I can say hand on heart that this is not the major issue that you are trying to make it out to be. Ntl have well over 1 milllion broadband customers and If there was a issue as big as you think it is then there would be a 2hr wait to speak to customer service. This is not the case. And there will be something done about it rest assured.

There will be 1000's of people will good stable 9-10mbs connection.
