Re: Coming Soon to Virgin Media TV (2016) Vol 2

Virgin really do need to get their act together regarding their On Demand service which is very poor in my opinion. I`m constantly finding I`m having to wait for days on end before the latest episodes of my favourite dramas are added to the available content. And even when they`ve been added I find when I try to watch the show I get the message "this program is available right now please try later",which I do and get the same message!
The tivo box is dreadfully slow too which is a damn nuisance when trying to watch recordings, search the EPG or actually do anything really!
Getting back to the On Demand, the lack of HD is also a issue that needs to be corrected.

The new box will be sorting a lot of these issues out.

Even if VM did have a 4k capable box, they still have to have an agreement in place with BT to broadcast the 4k version of the channel.

The new box won't be out for a few months yet. Probably about Christmas/early New Year

It's true but while we will have a 4K capable box unless they do a deal with sky, it won't be a 4K content box

Presumably it will be launched with some 4K content available - Sky is not the only producer of 4K content.

Satellite is an open platform, BT dont have a deal with Sky for their existing channels, they manage them themselves, so they dont need one for a 4k channel either. Anyone with the requisite Sky Q box will get the channels, as long as they pay BT the subscription.

Horizon 07-08-2016 23:50

Re: Coming Soon to Virgin Media TV (2016) Vol 2

Sticking my head above the parapet here, but its quite obvious, I would have thought, what VM will do with regards to 4k.

John Malone (ultimate owner of VM) has been doing deals left, right and centre for content, with the possibility of larger deals still to come ie full blown merger between his organisation and the likes of Lionsgate, or AMC, or Scripps, or all of them.

But at the moment he controls Discovery who in turn own Eurosport. He controls All3media (who are the largest production company in this country) who announced a recent deal to produce four brand new dramas.

Would it be too outrageous to expect just for once, that the cableco might just launch its own 4k content/channels/vod rather than just relying on Sky/BT/or someone else?

I would suggest its entirely possible, more so if Malone gets his mitts on Formula 1.

Do you mean about content or the box, will a new Tv anywhere app come for the new software as the current app can't do series links with streaming. From what you hear does the new TiVo sound better than sky q honestly

You are not getting a TiVo Bolt. The Bolt is a US model and wouldn't work in the UK.

So it won't be a Tivo box, which will please some, it will be an Eos box but initially with Tivo software. Hopefully, it will have six tuners and a 1TB hard drive. Particularly important is the need to overcome the slow performance of the Tivo that we have become accustomed to in more recent years. It worked well when it first came out.

Virgin Media market it as a Tivo box, so I guess you should take it up with them :D

"Our TiVo box is one clever bit of kit. It's packed with loads of features that make it easy for you to discover great shows and watch them the way you want to. And it has its own dedicated internet connection, so you can stream without slowing your home broadband down."

We received a weekly newsletter to confirm VM would be getting 4K(UHD) movies, but it didn't say whether it was on-demand only or via Sky Cinema 4k(UHD)

Virgin Media’s launch of parent Liberty Global’s EOS box and the rebranding of its TiVo-based advanced TV service under the Virgin TV name will mark “a very significant step-up” in its ability to deliver on-demand programming across multiple platforms, according to CEO Tom Mockridge.

Tim Mockridge said that Virgin Media plans to add new applications and services and “lift the breadth of programming” and the overall TV experience available to subscribers, “in a way that hasn’t happened since the TiVo box was initially launched”.

An new TiVo box is testing.

We now have two "TiVo testing" sources.

An new app is testing and we seen new information on what you can do with the new TiVo boxes.

We have also seen two prices for the new box - viewers will need to pay extra per month for one.

One not with 4K and one with 4K.

Last info was given on August 5th 2016.

.... if its already being tested "out in the field" this would seem to suggest that it will launch a lot sooner than Christmas.

The thing is sadly if we realied on virgin media for info we would wait forever

I predict

Non 4K box will cost £49 to install and would be £5 per month extra ( but already £5 extra per month for TiVo) so same price

4K box will cost £99 to install and would cost £8 per month extra ( but already £5 extra per month for TiVo) so £3 dearer but remember if that is per box two boxes is £6

But if your under a loyalty deal it's likely you would need a new loyalty deal

I believe 4K from sky will cost about £10 per month but personally I'm not wanting to pay something sky don't pay for same channels

Well if I'm wrong that's cool, but let's separate the new sky q box n features from the movies and sports in 4K, first of all how much dearer In total

See sky charge a price for 4K but for us there will be two the 4K box add on and then sky sports and movies

I find the right wing balances out the left wing, isn't that how a rational person makes a decision?

So how much storage you think 4K and non 4K TiVo will have, well currently 1tb gives 125 hours HD, 500 SD and then only 31 hours 4K so that not great especially to last 6 years so

1tb = 31 hours 4K 125 hours HD, 500 SD
2tb = 62 hours 4K 250 hours HD, 1000 SD
3tb = 93 hours 4K 375 hours HD, 1500 SD

That is based on the current Tivo which is mpeg 2. We don't know, but I suspect the 4k will be delivered as mpeg3 which will effectively give more storage space.

Once all the mpeg 2 standard boxes are gone and SA V+ boxes gone, all content could go to mpeg3 and give overall more storage space..

The TiVO, Samsung V+ & VHD are dual standard DVB-C (MPEG2) & DVB-C2 (MPEG4) capable. Sky Cinema HD is now distributed in MPEG4 on VM, along with some OD content. Haven't noticed recordings from Sky Cinema HD using any less disk space.

I said in the stb thread that I was suspicious whether VM would release a PVR at all.

VM/Liberty have said their new service is cloud based. How much cloud based remains to be seen.

If we had no storage space then what is the point to series link + as it's purely just a reminder system, if they do that I'll just stick with slow clunky TiVo because at least I can record or even maybe go to sky

The transport stream info I was sent at the end of last month showed that all of the broadcast streams were still using MPEG2. Although, as you say, MPEG4 was being used for some OD content.

Once Game Of Thrones is finished the value of Sky Atlantic will be eroded.

The top ten most watched shows on Sky Atlantic are GoT episodes. It's a super show both for HBO and Sky and its success is unlikely to be replicated once the show is finished.

Sky just got very lucky when doing a deal with HBO to launch Sky Atlantic at the same time that Game OF thrones came along.

Indeed but Sky Sports channels were recently renumbered and the gap was created by dropping the F1 channels down a slot. The F1 channels could have been left on their original slots, suggesting that the gaps are a deliberate reservation for extra channels "coming soon".

Don't get me wrong I do suspect we will get it but don't get disappointed if we don't because VM haven't said anything on this so it is all speculation at this point

SS Mix could be a driver to sky platform, it should be noted that AFAIK it's not even going to be on Now TV which is not a good omen IMO as you would of expected it to be

It won't end there. It will probably all get repeated on Sky 2 as part of an attempt to revitalise that channel. There it will pick up all those viewers who couldn't watch it on Sky Atlantic, boosting advertising revenues.

Once Game of Thrones is no more, I'd say the odds are evens.

The whole point of keeping Sky Atlantic exclusive is because of Game of Thrones.

Actually, I'd go even further than that... Sky rejig their channels every 4-5 years and once the HBO/Sky deal is up, I'd be surprised if it were renewed on the same terms. So, there might not even be a Sky Atlantic in 2-3 years time.

There is already talk of a spin off to Game of Thrones plus I'm sure HBO will be going all out to find new content to match.

Actually, when you first get Now TV and you see all the box sets on there that have been on Sky Atlantic, it is a revelation. It's not just about Game of Thrones at all, albeit that is the 'market leader'.

I am still wading through those box sets now, and having subscribed to Now TV only last summer, I remain impressed by all this content that we have missed by not having this channel.

Ratings suggest its all about game of thrones sir

It is one of the most cliche and ridiculous shows ever of some fantasy land with dragons and strange little wars. So dungeons and dragons. But throw in some tits and sex scenes to make it seem cool

Fair play it has worked based on ratings but it's a very weird and utterly laughable geeky show

Sky use it as their crown jewel in sky Atlantic. Once it's done and over Virgin media will get the channel

100%
