But you were asking on behalf of family members who are with virgin, they tell you that, you go back to them and say "you have to sign up with bt, if you want these channels", this will continue right up until Aug 1st imo

The thing is that it's not available on VM.... Until it is, and by then you know!

They will never say "Oh yes we are in talks and might come to VM".

Aye this just reinforces the opinion that a deal has been done and part of the deal is BT aggressively say it hasn't and try to get VM customers over to them.

Either that or all the rumours were wrong.....

Here's a thought: Sky has just announced its quarterly results. Normally, VM's results come out the following week and are often tied to new services. Although there's been no notification of results next week (things might be different under Liberty Global), maybe we'll get an announcement next week? (Last year the VM Q2 results were published July 24.)

We won't see VM numbers as a standalone entity anymore as they don't exist from a listings perspective. Liberty may choose to break them out when they announce their results but i doubt it.

But at least BT Sports is coming? It's more or less confirmed - just no details of pricing or package models.

Besides, VM aren't daft - they'll know they'll need to come up with something to keep existing customers and still be appealing enough to draw new ones.

When Frank Warren originally set up Boxnation with Simon Green two years ago, he knew that he never had the economies of scale to make it a standalone success. He also knew that if he built up the infrastructure and obtained a decent subscriber base, that it would be an excellent assett to sell on.

Simon Green is now head of BT Sport and talks on a takeover of Boxnation began on 13/1/13. Up until now the main priority for BT, however, has been to sucessfully launch their main channels on 1/8/13.

Re: Coming Soon to Virgin TV (2013) Vol. 3.

Hi

First time poster long time watcher

like many here I been hoping to see if the rumours come out true for both SA and BT

this for me from Digitalspy from the smallword MD cable owner is a little worrying:

Hi

We've tried to get it, but its no go at the moment I'm afraid. They seem pretty keen on an exclusive launch...it may change after a while but I have a feeling it will be like Sky Atlantic and BT can't get the fee they want for it after the initial hype, and so keep it exclusive.

We have taken £5 pm of the price of our Sky Sports Pack, and reduced it to £16 pm (Sky price is £22 pm from September) by way of a response...

Hope that helps clarify

Kind regards

David
MD Smallworld Cable

David was the first to confirm when F1 HD was not available and also about SA being an exclusive so its concerning when he starts using the "exclusive title"

Re: Coming Soon to Virgin TV (2013) Vol. 3.

Interesting though Smallworld are taking steps to fight against BT with is £5 discount (Virgin confirm no reduction in XL).

from a size structure BT might be looking to target the likes of Smallworld and WrightCable due to their size i.e. easier to convert these and not big enough to fight back.

Thing is VM might have some added value up it's sleeve that isn't sports based?

I personally don't want more sport for my money, in fact I don't want any sport! My guess is I'm in the majority.

I guess Virgin is in a a different situation where ESPN is marketed as included with XL (without looking at how Smallworld does do their packages) so the loss of BT is more felt within the Virgin hub of packages as for those who have benefited by its inclusion whereas Smallworld consumers have always had to "opt in and pay" so to speak

I know we have speculated on whether SA could be a substitute for loss of ESPN (for better or worse for some) but again he mentions BT in the same breath as SA "exclusive" so if there has been some movement providing SA to virgin customers it hasnt been felt down to the smaller players yet (lets not forget that Virgin isnt the only Cable operator in the UK albeit it is the largest).

Might's are no good Clint because the days are ticking away and with more price rises coming and the removal of ESPN from the XL pack Virgin better get their skates on or the simple fact is that they will lose quite a few more customers to their rivals unless they have something significant up their sleeves...

Well lets face it, people aren't exactly rushing to BT.

There are things VM could bring to the table that increase there numbers that have nothing to do with BT or SA.

Oh Virgin, are you listening
In the lane, snow is glistening
A beautiful sight,
We're happy tonight,
We're walking in a winter wonderland.

And gone away (gone away) is the bluebird (is the bluebird),
But here to stay stay stay is a new bird.
He sings a love song,
As we go along,
We're walking in a winter wonderland.

In the meadow we can build a snowman
And pretend that he is Parson Brown
He'll say: Are you married?
We'll say: No man,
But you can do the job
When you're in town.

Later on (later on! ), we'll conspire,
As we dream by the fire, babe
We'll face unafraid
All the plans that we've made,
We're walking in a winter wonderland.

In the meadow we can build a snowman,
And pretend that he's Parson Brown
He'll say: Are you married?
We'll say: No man,

People seem to be getting a bit desperate for something to happen, oh dear VM, you've dropped a clanger this time.

I'm not that into sport, personally, but to have not got something sorted by now seems like a really poor decision, do,they ever get anything right?

Maybe they know the sport channel is for 2 years but the broadband is for life... I.e the lesson setanta and espn did not learn

They don't care about broadband customers specifically, they care about triple play much like VM do - thats where the money is made. BT Vision should now enable that, but there is no incentive for anyone to take it - enter BT Sports.

Not sure that is true. Though isn't broadband pure profit, other than the outlay to connect the customer?
Sorry, my knowledge is limited, and too lazy to search for it :D

But on point of customer, I hop around, depending on what is on offer.

I can see me moving from BT when the contract period ends, perhaps back to Sky

The thing with BT is they billions available to them un-like setanta and ESPN so they can easily ride out any losses for the next 3 years then bid higher when the next set of rights become available to bid for and win more packages of Sky

A bigger package does not guarantee quality

Same argument I used to use with my gf...albeit she still went for the bigger package :(

but seriously i agree with you, i dont see it being the triple option as its always about quality

Don't understand people talking about non disclosure agreements so bt can get as many customers as possible before virgin come out and say they have bt sports. If I wanted the channel and called up to disconnect I have to give a months notice and if it comes next week I could just cancel disconnection and stay with virgin!

There is no guarantee that BT Sports will appear from launch as yet. Think of it like the purchase of new technology, it's often cheaper to buy a time after the launch of a product. Those who buy it straight away pay a premium. The first important game on BT Sports is on 17 August...

Channels that are testing off the EPG can be detected by using an unauthorised box or a TV that can accept cable transmissions direct. Only the FTA channels will actually be viewable.

As a shareholder of BT, I concur with the view of VM that broadband is more profitable than the pay TV market.

Pay TV is basically used as a sweetener or convenience factor for the customer.

they wont spend the billions needed to compete with sky they all ready nearly 2 billion behind and sky gonna up bid lots next time to beat BT and Bt shareholders not allow them to spend billions with no return

vincerooney 26-07-2013 20:34

Re: Coming Soon to Virgin TV (2013) Vol. 3.

BT have made a gamble. The game of a petulant child really. Probably some executive who wants to make a name for himself. Lets remember BT took sky to court over sky's monopoly of premiership football being damaging

Now we have a channel which is refusing to go onto sky directly and refusing to go onto virgin. Their behaviour is disgusting. OFCOM have been shown to be a pointless corporate puppet. I paid 24 quid for all premier league football 5 years ago. Now I can't view all premier league football anymore

Disgusting.

I hope BT sport go out of business quick even if VM do get them purely for their own rotten hypocrisy

I hate the dirty corrupt premier league. Greedy footballers who aren't as talented as they think playing second rate football and being funded by horrible corporate companies who do not care for the sport or the customer

That's why I'll miss bundesliga if we don't get BT. The gentlemans league

Everything else is rumour and innuendo

Re: Coming Soon to Virgin TV (2013) Vol. 3.

The " there's going to be an announcement in the next few days" thing that some are heralding as an exclusive is just stating the bleeding obvious. BT sports is due to launch in a few days, ESPN as it stands is due to disappear in a few days, of course Virgin are going to make an announcement, it ain't rocket science. They will have to announce something no matter which way it goes.
