[QUOTE=coulsontom;35575667]**** me, how can you not swear when there's such idiotic behaviour on here.

LOL, predictable

Your comments make no sense. The whole point of "CATCH UP on demand" is that it is stuff that you haven't recorded.

Yup, this is true, although if you record anything from the non-terrestrial channels, the chances are the programmes are likely to be repeated more than programmes on the BBC, you could simply change your recording priorities. Just a suggestion.

The whole point of it being on the box is so you don't mess with a laptop or PC. That's just a nonsense suggestion.

Not really a nonsense suggestion, it is a simple and effective solution to a problem you are having. You can use your PC/Laptop or you can continue to get upset over the way an app works. There are solutions to the problem, you just don't wanna accept it.

As for telling me to go to the BBC to complain, what is the point of a discussion forum? As if I would make the BBC Trust change anything. The BBC as a whole is shoddily run.

It becomes less of a discussion forum when you put forward a very real problem for some people, in the form of a rant, and decide to do do nothing about it. All you have done is moan and belittle other peoples suggestions. Again, not really a discussion. It seems you just want to rant about a problem VM have no control over. You could have put those frustrations in an email asking BBC to improve their iplayer - who knows, yours may have been the complaint that made them investigate the problem. As far as the BBC are concerned, the iplayer is acceptable because not enough people have complained to them directly.

The trouble is though, someone has to buy the rights or Sky will have a monopoly.

OK. Firstly, sorry for swearing.

Secondly, I agree that digital channels programmes are more often repeated, but it's just a bit fidily to re-jig recording priorities.

Also, I agree that it is the fault of the BBC Trust not Virgin but I was never criticising virgin for the iplayer app.

But I fundamentally disagree with your general point about not using the app and use a laptop instead if I don't like it. The way of watching BBC on demand should just be better.

That depends though doesn't it.

A lot rides on the quality of the rights available as much as anything.

As I see it, most people who subscribe to Sports channels, do so:

1. to watch their team
2. to watch the best games of other teams

The old system where Sky had all the best games and ESPN offered "off-cuts", Sky knew they had every football fan wanting to buy their package because ESPN was only going to carry a few games of a fans team, plus unglamorous matches in an unpopular 5.30pm sat slot.

Now, BT have 18 x first picks so they can satisfy the 2nd element of why people subscribe to sports channels. (Plus they are making them available very cheaply in the right scenario).

One would assume BT will bid for more rights at the next deal. Say, hypothetically that they acquire even more rights, say 60 games to 96 games on Sky. With again 18x first picks.

If they still charge significantly less than sky, people may be tempted to go for BT knowing they are likely to see an average of 6 games of their own team plus 18 of the best games. Sky may have to reduce prices.

Taken to the extreme, a scenario I suggested earlier, if BT acquire half the rights, 50%, 78 games each. If they then charge less than Sky, I don't see how Sky can afford not to match BT's prices.

I agree it should be better, but it is what we have. I only use iplayer for radio, and even then I use my ipod/mobile phone because "VM's" less than ideal. I fully understand your point that you should not have to use your laptop though.

Re: Coming Soon to Virgin TV (2013) Vol. 2.

I also think there's an issue surrounding the fact that there are quotas so they have to show each team so many times.

Can Sky afford to be showing West Brom v Hull and West Ham v Stoke on the same weekend that BT have Utd v City?

Given the teams get a flat fee, they should be free to choose games. You know when you see these mid table snooze fests there just to fill quotas.

ha.

Unless you're a fan of West Ham, Stoke, or a team where the result of the game would be influential on your teams chance of success, you would not be interested in watching.

unless you're desperate and have nothing else to do/watch

BBC are testing out an new HD Channel on Astra (Maybe the following will happen):

A) An HD Channel for the BBC Red Button.
B) BBC HD maybe about to relaunch for shows in HD on CBBC, Cbeebies, BBC Three and BBC Four.
C) BBC News HD may launch.

Rumours started by a516 (a516 think A will happen).

http://www.a516digital.com/2013/05/b...-way.html#more

This is for a BBC HD Red Button service. Apparently, none of the other broadcasters can afford/want to take up the offer of a further Freeview HD channel, so the BBC are using it for this.

As part of their platform neutrality policy, this service will be availsble on satellite and offered to VM.

By putting the content behind the Red Button service, the BBC do not have to seek approval for a "new channel" from the BBC Trust.

Possibly, depending on the type of box that you have. For example, Sky Digi boxes are not currently capable of accepting the values needed to watch some HD broadcasts.

It is believed that the failure of Sky to update the software to accomodate this may be unlawful. A numbrr of people, myself included, are considering taking legal action against Sky to test the legality of this anti competitive behaviour.

No-one is likely to find out about the VM carriage deal until VM are ready to announce it, current negotiations are regarded as extremely commercially sensitive and are on a "need to know basis", with confidentiality measures on 'lockdown'.

HD Red Button explains how they'll do 3D Tennis & Doctor Who 50th.

Hopefully we'll get it as a linear channel as I doubt they can deliver 3D via the streaming 'connected red button.'.

I hope so too, the red button services need to improve for the BBC, like it should take streams from the hidden channels that are used for the non TiVo boxes, they do on Sky Sports and they did for the Olympics so it's clearly possible. I was disappointed with the lack of R1BW footage on the TiVo red button as well, had to stream it online, was even available on Freeview red button later in the day

Platform Neutrality? TiVo hasn't has half the red button content ever, the red button is hardly platform neutral.

I think it is VM playing stupid games again. VM know that many sports fans will move over to Sky or BT to get these channels.

It would be suicide for VM not to get these channels.

You don't need to. You can move to BT for just internet and phone.

Sky is cheaper than Virgin for Sky Sports too.

That BT have the 18 best games of the season is reason to want it:

utd v city
che v ars
ars v spurs
new v utd
etc...

@harry

Yes I meant Sky tv and bT BB.

We cancelled virgin last week and are getting sky tv with bt phone and bb.

We did it to save money (£580 to be precise due to offers and such) but a helpful consequence was BT Sport.

It would be cheaper to have phone & internet with Sky, but then when you factor in bt sport it's actually £5 cheaper to have bt phone & internet.

I fail so see how my comment is responded to with 'no'.

BT Sport is the company, I didn't specify a channel by saying 1, 2 or ESPN so my comment was correct.

Why is it that these broadcasters want there HD channels miles away from their SD Channels?!? Makes no sense! I thought Comedy Central had it good how they put the HD before the +1.

Not confirmed but I think Viacom have ask them to move Comedy Central HD so that Comedy Central Extra can move to Channel 133 from tomorrow.

So the top three Viacom channels numbers will be for:

132. Comedy Central
133. Comedy Central Extra
134. MTV

Going by some of the other recent additions, VM seem to take a little longer to launch HD channels but that doesn't explain why Bio +1 and CI +1 didn't launch with History +1.

Sky's part ownership of these channels and their track record of keeping HD versions exclusive to their platform isn't exactly encouraging.

Ye. Seriously, I'm not a big History fan myself (can ya tell?) mainly because it's gone over and over again. There's a plethora of programmes, particularly on the BBC, that tell the same story in a slightly different way. And we've heard it all before.

And if we're not doing history documentaries we're trying to re-create it with an endless number of "period dramas". I detest them yet the whole country gets hooked (brainwashed) into thinking Downton Abbey is some majestically unmissable TV programme.

Hi mb. Firstly fair play for listening to criticism and changing your update posts. I didn't particularly think it was necessary, but obviously some did.

Secondly, am I right in thinking the last info you had was that there were no plans for further channel launches?

9.00pm - Vegas - A 1960's period drama set in Vegas
11.00pm - Oliver Stones Untold.....History Of The United States - A look at the administration of JFK

Couldn't agree more, my post was a tongue-in-cheek dig at coulsontom following his moan re History +1 and period dramas.

Yes it was that on May 20th.

Hi mb. Firstly fair play for listening to criticism and changing your update posts. I didn't particularly think it was necessary, but obviously some did.

But I had to axe my Freeview list to make room for the new look for my links.:td:

I think the deal was signed sometime before May 17th.

Is H2, Bio, Nat Geo Wild, and CI now on the L Pack???

Banshee is apparently pretty decent.:(
Be aware though, if anyone who may watch it has a weak stomach, I am told the violence is quite graphic and very realistic too, and not just in terms of gore!

MB, if these channels do launch on the L pack, what do you think the chances of the HD equivalents launching on XL pack? I know you have not posted anything from your insiders, but just wondering what your views might be from your past experiences?
I am quietly confident (but am rather ignorant of these things) we might get them soonish, I am mostly hoping for Nat Geo Wild HD though.

Sorry why do VM keep relegating HD channels down the EPG:(

Jameseh 28-05-2013 22:31

Re: Coming Soon to Virgin TV (2013) Vol. 2.

Because the broadcaster wants a higher position for their main SD channel.

There must be a tipping point for promoting HD channels over SD ones and I am not talking about the Freeview ones! All new TV's are HD and now all new VM boxes are HD capable?

Jameseh 28-05-2013 22:40

Re: Coming Soon to Virgin TV (2013) Vol. 2.

There are more people on M, M+ and L (therefore don't have HD past 1/2/3/4/5/Film4) than XL so the SD channels get more viewers.

Shame they can't use same numbers for both SD & HD channels.

The way Virgin is working in 2013 MTV HD, Nat Geo Wild HD, CI HD and HISTORY HD may launch soon.

As well as all the other Viacom Channels plus CI +1.

Re: Coming Soon to Virgin TV (2013) Vol. 2.

Changes so far:

Comedy Central +1 has moved from 134 to 133
MTV has moved from 311 to 134
Comedy Central HD has moved from 133 to 181
Comedy Central Extra has moved from 185 to 182
MTV Live HD has moved from 310 to 311
MTV Hits has moved from 317 to 312
MTV Base has moved from 315 to 313
MTV Rocks has moved from 325 to 315
VH1 has moved from 320 to 316
VIVA has moved from 313 to 317

So a reshuffle with no extra channels added at this point. The lack of gaps in the new MTV channel range would appear to indicate that there are no plans to bring any of MTV's other channels to VM at the present time.

Re: Coming Soon to Virgin TV (2013) Vol. 2.

Always thought they should just add an extra digit for the alternate channel versions, so 103 would be ITV SD, 1030 ITV HD, 1031 ITV+1 etc. But typing 4 numbers is probably harder and the set top boxes back when they had variable length channel numbers were a bit iffy.

You would be surprised how many series many of us have on record and the trouble is many start at the same time so +1 channels come in very useful for recording clash scenarios.

jobbie8 29-05-2013 10:59

I was kinda hoping for MTV Classic to show up in the new reshuffle today. :-(

Most clashes arise because of the padding that TiVo doesn't work out how to switch so if you record 1 channel back to back it needs 2 tuners for 4 mins (2mins pad)

Those who say you don't need padding are talking crap because if you don't you often miss the start or end of programmes.

I really don't get why MTV moved next to Comedy Central and that Comedy Central HD has been moved all the way to 181.

Bizarre.

maybe it is preparation for:
Comedy Central Extra +1
MTV HD
MTV +1
MTV Classic
MTV Live
MTV Music

Re: Coming Soon to Virgin TV (2013) Vol. 2.

On Sky, don't they bump the HD channels as far up the guide as possible?

And if you only have SD Sky, they have the SD channels in those places?

Can Virgin not do that.

It seems backwards to promote a +1 channel ahead of HD.

Probably just Viacom wanting MTV to have a better position in the entertainment genre.

The box would have to wait for a possible 4th digit before changing channels which would make changing channels more sluggish.

What if you started the 4 digit number with a 0. So BBC One being 0101, Sky 1 HD being 0121

Then the box has identified that its going to be a 4 digit number

All my recordings are set with a default padding of Zero and I only occasionally add padding; usually if I do, it's for a BBC show.

I don't get the problems you refer to.

I'm not really convinced that there is a need to use 4 digit channels at present. Your suggestion wouldn't really help in steveh's situation, he wanted to add an extra digit for timeshift / HD versions of a channel.
