Its best to phone up customer services and state that the lettering on your remote control is wearing off and you might get another one for free but if you don't get another one for free then you will have to fork out around £25 for a new one Richard.

Depends on whether this is the first replacement or not. I called and they said because I had never asked for one before I could have it free but in future it would cost £10.

Indeed. In the meantime, you could move one of the series to the SD channel (or +1) to prevent it happening.

Surely it is about time TiVo had a firmware update? My brother in laws sky+ box walks rings round Virgin's. So much faster, it really needs a speed boost an revamp of the interface. I actually don't bother using any on demand as it is painfully slow.

Re: General TiVo Discussion Part 3

Is there any way to change how channels are categorized? For example, I know itv4 tries to be all things to all men, but if I change my epg view to sport I'd quite like it there alongside the actual sport channels, even though I know it isn't one.

Are there any lights on the front of the TiVo? If not, check:
1) the mains cable is plugged into the power supply block.
2) the mains plug is in the socket, and it's switched on
3) the lead from the from the power supply block is plugged into the back of the TiVo - and that it goes into the right socket.
4) the switch on the back of the TiVo is on

I'm at home for the weekend and was trying to show my parents something on YouTube. Tried to access the search but was told the app was temporarily unavailable. So rebooted the box and still couldn't get access. It curiously isn't appearing in the main app menu either. Anyone else having trouble with it?

Do you mean loading YouTube from TiVo Search, or the search within the YouTube app? Do you get an error code?

There should be an update later this year.

How slow is your box? And is it consistent or does it vary?

Sometimes it will just freeze up, other times it will work reasonable. On demand or anything interactive it just dog slow.

You should report it, Risco.

Re: General TiVo Discussion Part 3

It may be caused by IR interference in the room. To test this, next time it happens put your left hand over the TiVo's IR receiver, which is just to the left of the green power LED on the front of the TiVo. Then operate the menus using the buttons on the front of the TiVo. Does the speed return to normal?

Has it been on constantly for a few weeks?

i find it starts to slow up/become buggy if its not been rebooted in a while.

My TiVo sometimes gets a bit sluggish. I'll try this the next time.

I've always put it down to either the EPG getting updated or some of the other maintenance that TiVo does or sluggish response from TiVo's internet connection when it is getting other information it needs.

Can't say that's been my experience. Mine are only re-booted when there's a software update or when the toaster causes the RCD to trip and I don't really notice any change in performance on either box.

IR interference can cause all sorts of strange behavior. My kids had been playing with a remote control helicopter and the remote control had been left on, pointing at the TiVo box.

It drove me mad for a week trying to work out what was wrong. I tried both my Harmony remotes to no avail and even looked out the original TiVo remote until I noticed that normal service was resumed when I stood in the middle of the room (blocking the helicopter remote). So I covered covered the IR receiver on the box and used the controls on the box to check that the box was indeed working fine. It was only a few minutes after that that it all clicked.

here's a question ive never understood. what do you get for plugging your tivo box into the the superhub? Is it just the ability to watch channels via tv anywhere??

secondly why do you need to do that?? The tivo is already online as you can send recording requests and it obviously has iplayer etc

Stephen 29-07-2014 21:23

Re: General TiVo Discussion Part 3

If you connect you TiVo boxes to your router then you should be able to watch recordings that were made on your other boxes.

Also you are able to use the remote control in the app for iOS and android to actually control your TiVo.

I have had an odd "fault" appear on my TIVO these last few days. Recordings are mute when I start them, but if I "rewind" the sound reappears.

Stephen 29-07-2014 21:29

Re: General TiVo Discussion Part 3

That's odd. Does it happen with older recordings?

arcimedes 29-07-2014 22:00

Wonder if its connected with the other fault that you don't always get the sound until you do something on the remote? On the other hand I haven't seen it on recording of the last few days.

I am about to use powerline adaptors to connect my Tivo to the network but looking at the online help video it warns against using an extension socket or adaptor plug.

I don't have any spare mains sockets near the router or the Tivo box, is it likely to cause major problems using an extension socket?

I agree, muppetman11, but he only seems to have one TiVo and he possibly doesn't understand that the vast majority of TV Anywhere function is available without the connection.

I guess he may also want to maximise his use of Netflix and YouTube from a tablet.

Excuse the bump - but I thought it better than a new thread. Have just got back from hols to find my TiVo has died (big green screen with a "DVR has detected serious fault - wait 3 hours while it tries to fix itself" message, followed by nothing), so they're coming out on Thursday for the inevitable box swap. (Mrs M has just got off the 'phone and commented how much she likes dealing with Virgin customer services, fwiw).

Anyhow, the reason I'm posting is I remember there being some chat about being able to back up series links, but can't remember if this was pie in the sky future speak, or current reality?

Not the end of the world either way - Mrs M is quite enjoying the fact that we're losing a lot of the stuff I record but never watch!

Thanks to Ben for the above link. Is the screen turning blue...

andy_m 06-09-2014 11:05

Re: General TiVo Discussion Part 3

I like the red - I think it's better than the TiVo blue which I personally think looks a little cheap. Besides that, red is obviously Virgin corporate so I can't see it being anything drastic, if at all. That said, something needs to be done around the Sky on demand screen. I understand the reasons for it, but it's very jarring. It would almost be better to give up any red on those screens and just accept that there's a price to be paid for carrying certain content.

Does anyone know what sort of circumstances you need to have to get a free upgrade to a 1TB TiVo? That was all I was told, but they didn't say anything about what those circumstances are.

Asking for a relative btw, managing just on a 500GB box.

---------- Post added at 14:12 ---------- Previous post was at 13:33 ----------

Also, if they already have a TiVo box wouldn't they be able to only pay the activation fee rather than the installation fee, as it would surely be a case of swapping the boxes and sending back the 500GB one.

BenMcr 08-09-2014 15:18

Re: General TiVo Discussion Part 3

As far as I'm aware there is no free upgrade route between 500GB and 1TB

The cheapest if available would be a self install for the 1TB box which would cost £20 delivery and £49.95 activation.

MalteseFalcon 08-09-2014 16:06

Re: General TiVo Discussion Part 3

Would that be added to the next months bill or is it paid upfront?

The older non-recordable boxes could only tune to one TV channel so displaying the channel number worked. Even with the V+ HD boxes, there is only one live TV tuner and two separate recording tuners, so the number on the front showed what the Live TV tuner was set to show.

TiVo has three tuners all of which can record or show Live TV, so what you're actually watching can be on any of the three tuners - therefore you can't show three different channel numbers at the same time.

Sounds good, but it's impractical. What happens when it dies, which is all too often on the existing boxes?

The answer surely lies in the cloud, and so this machine is already out of date.

TiVo are doing the 'proper' cloud too http://www.engadget.com/2014/01/07/t...dvr-prototype/

However I think the whole 'in home' mega install is a lot more popular in the US than it is over here - there are quite a few products available over there where you can load up your DVD / Blu-Ray collections onto a server http://www.kaleidescape.com/products/

I'm assuming this is who TiVo are aiming it at - and it would likely sit within a server room, rather than being on show.

Shame on anyone who asks when it's coming to VM, you really will have more money than sense :p:

Jesus H, now that's one ugly mod edit.....:Yikes: You'd need to be tied to your chair 24/7 to even get close to watching everything it can hold, now that really is sad.

I think it's more so you never have to delete anything again or even risk loosing recordings. and it's a rack mount so you wouldn't ever need to see the actual thing.

It's not a single HDD it's a multi drive setup configured in RAID 5 with the drives being hot swapable.

So chances of it ever dying is very slim.

It's not meant to look pretty. It's a mass storage device to be rack mounted meaning it will be hidden away so you'd never see or hear it.

I like purple as a colour and honestly think that looks pretty good.

Now my main hope is the interface comes with the efficiency and speed upgrade it is billed as doing. The I like the TiVo system but it does chug a bit at times.

Looks good, nice and modern. I wonder why the 'infinity' logo is used without the words Virgin Media in it?

Re: General TiVo Discussion Part 3

TiVo UI and navigation overhauled with a focus on discovery and recommendations

Quote:

Virgin Media has announced today that its TiVo television service has been updated for the first time in around four years, bringing a new design and new features to the platform.

Among the changes are a new background color – gone is the iconic red color theme, it’s now ‘plum’ instead – and new fonts, as well as redesigned menu structures to make it easier to access live and on-demand programming. Previously, live and on-demand content was clunkily arranged in the same section. The new ‘infinity’ Virgin Media logo also replaces the previous branding throughout the new UI.

https://www.cableforum.co.uk/images/...2014/09/33.jpg

The main Electronic Programme Guide (EPG) is still arranged in a grid layout, and still denotes live shows that are available on catch-up TV – it also allows you to move backwards in time to access on-demand shows that have already aired on live TV. Catch-up TV providers are now listed on the right-hand side of the On Demand screen. Virgin Media said there will be more catch-up providers added to this section in the near future.

The search function has also been overhauled, and just like Sky’s Search option, now shows program suggestions as you start typing. Much like many other types of ‘consumption’ services nowadays, the updates see Virgin Media put far more emphasis on content discovery and recommendations.

https://www.cableforum.co.uk/images/...2014/09/34.jpg

To this end, there are a number of different ways to get show suggestions, based on your viewing history and the shows most-viewed by Virgin Media’s 2.3 million TiVo customers. There’s also now a feature that will automatically download shows in the background, based on other shows you’ve downloaded too.

To help make finding downloaded shows easier, they’re now broken down into different program types – like Kids, Movies, TV & Radio etc.

While there are a number of significant visual and functional changes, not all the tweaking has been on the surface. Virgin Media said it had fully rebuilt the platform from the ground up to make it quicker and to offer higher resolution images. The update also adds support for HTML5-based apps (like iPlayer, BBC News etc.), which will gradually replace the Flash-based apps already in use on the platform.

https://www.cableforum.co.uk/images/...2014/09/35.jpg

Finally, Virgin Media has also struck a deal with Opera to integrate its app store into the platform in future too, meaning even more apps will be available.

The updates will start to roll out to Virgin Media’s TiVo customers from the end of October* and are expected to reach everyone before the end of the year. There are also plans to update its TV Anywhere mobile apps in the future too, with the iOS version arriving first, the company said.
*some VM customers will see the new interface next week

I agree Den, I thought it was a good upgrade; more HD screens and the mini TV window in menus that were used a lot but previously didn't have them.

Nah. Sorry VM, this upgrade is going to suck. Hopefully they will still have the option of having the black and white look. Will be using that instead of this plum colour. Awful.
