I've had no offer email yet and I pre-reg'd ages ago.

I've been a bit of a lurker on these forums (as I'm the quiet type) but now getting a bit concerned about not getting the opportunity to get TIVO installed free.

I've just ordered mine as well, well another one!

Is anyone able to confirm what the monthly cost should be for a VIP50 customer with two Tivo 1TB boxes and the VHD box? The lady on the phone told me it would be £107.55 a month. She also told me that the £3 monthly charge for Tivo is per account and not per box, yet I understand that VIP50 customers have it included in the bundle cost. Therefore I was expecting the monthly cost to be £100.55. She told me the extra £7 came from me having Talk International and Talk Mobile in my package. Can anyone help, I'm confused!

Thanks!

So what about if you've already ordered and chosen "add tivo" like me? Will I not be offered free multi-room now?

Cheers Ben.

I'm guessing that's the £100.55 plus the £6.50 for an extra box?

That is probably where I am getting confused because she told me that because I was removing the V+ I wouldn't have to pay that anymore.

I'm not complaining by the way, I am now just really confused after speaking to her!

VIP 50 comes with two boxes as standard, so that would any of the three that you have. So a 3rd box is £6.50 on top of that

Cool, thanks for that Ben :)

It's really good to see everyone who has been waiting so long is now getting the chance to order. And it's good that VM have decided to waive the £40 installation charge for April orders, and to add the £3 as an extra discount for VIP50ers.

My second box is being installed on the 28th April between 1 and 6.

Now I just need to recommend a few more friends to get some more credit on the account to help absorb the cost of the second box....!

He has just gone after taking 30 minutes in total. I saved him time because i had already moved my V+ box to the bedroom and had the V HD box ready for him to take away. He was a very polite Polish chap and has installed several Tivos.

So, I haven't gone near it yet as I wanted to post on here. Now the evaluation begins. I will concentrate on the most important things initially, like watching and recording TV. Later when I am more familiar I will check out all the extra high tech stuff.:ghugs:

If you move the V+ to the bedroom yourself and swap it theres nothing else to do is there? It's just works, HD and all.

Re: General TiVo Discussion Part 2

Had my install about 10:30 yesterday after booking on Monday.

Greeted at the door with a handshake. He had only been on the training 2 weeks ago and only just fitted his the night before.
Showed him the original Tivo and peanut which he was suprised looked still so alike.
Then we got talking about Tivo's stuff and he didn't know about the better Iplayer but lack of proper red button, no box office channel, channel up and down to move change page on EPG.
These were not a fault in anyway as he was a nice chap and actually joked that he had my number so if he got questioned about anything on his future installs would give me a ring.
Before he left he called about swapping my Premium HD channels to the Tivo box from the V+ which was now upstairs replacing the original V box. He said should be done in a few mins but here is my number if it is not done.

Left it an hour or so and was still not on Tivo but was on V+.
Called Stuart the engineer back and he said leave it with me will call you back.
As he did maybe 30 mins later and said this time he had gone through to the Tivo team and they had sorted it. I checked while he was on the line and it was done.
I said thanks very much and he said enjoy your Tivo.

That sort of service is something you don't get a lot of today unfortunately. Three Thumbs Up!!! :tu::tu::tu:

I got the email Monday but was out of the country until late last night. Phoned up today and I have to say, top service from the lady on the phone. Without prompting, she told me they would take out the old V-box, leave the V+ and transfer the Sky HD channels to the Tivo box. She summarised the prices, the 12 month contract, everything.

The best bit after my whinging earlier this week about not being able to contact VM until the end of the week and what installation date I would get? It's coming Tuesday morning!! I guess Tivo hasn't hit the South Herts area in a big way

OK! Very brief first impression are very favourable. I checked out two things that have been, and are also, concerns for others.

1/ SD picture quality is not a problem. On my Sharp 36" LED TV there is no perceptible difference over the V+. I am very fussy about my PQ and I am satisfied.

2/ Somebody posted that the remote had to be pointed directly at the box and would not register if it was at an angle. I have not experienced this. The remote functioned from all angles. The response can be a little slower than my V+ box which never had any lag issues.

Happy days so far.:)

More later!:p:

If you've just had it installed today the esponse should improve a bit over the next 24 hours or so once it's downloaded all the data

Confirmed, my box goes like the clappers now. Over 250 suggestions and countinmg. No lag, although sometimes the home page may take a few seconds to open if I havent opened it in a while.

No issues with remote for me, works in pretty much every angle apart from pointing directly away from the box ;)

Re: General TiVo Discussion Part 2

Got mine installed this morning woo hoo,

Love the speed, must say I can't see any issues of it being slow. but it will definately take some time to get used to it.

Now Picture Quality

I have got to say that SD picture is noticalbly softer, which I admit is dissapointing but not as dissapointing as the iPlayer app whic is not so much noticably softer but to me in my opinion unacceptably softer with the HD footage quite poor.

I know that the BBC create different footage for iPhones etc so here is hoping that they encode stuf at a higher rate for Virgin Customers.

I do need to add that I spend my entire working day editing HD footage so it is possible that I'm being overly critical but the BBC need to sort this out IMHO

apart from that loving the box so far.

right really need to work :-)

I'm concerned you've been able to notice a drop in iplayer quality. I'm looking forward to the extra content but one of the best things about V+ is the VOD stream quality, especially HD.

iplayer HD streams H.264 at 3200kbps. How does this compare to the MPEG2 stream of VOD from VM (if anyone has this info)?

Does it 'feel' like you're leaving the box environment and going online to play iplayer programming? or is the experience still quite integrated?

Sorry for all the questions!

you go into the iPlayer environment as you would find on any device but it's quick and you don't feel that you are 'leaving' virgin.

I didn't know what the bit rate was for online iPlayer but 3.2 Mb is simply not good enough to fill a 40inch screen a DVD (i appraciate that it's a differant codec) averages 5Mb

Unfortunately this isn't something Virgin can fix except complain to the BBC

the codec upgrade from MPEG2 to H.264 will compensate in some way but this is why I'm concerned that while having access to more content, the quality will be degraded by sourcing from the net instead of a dedicated server. Like you say, nothing really can be done about this, would be nice if TIvo users still had access to existing BBC content on VM VOD so some HD content could still be streamed at best quality....

DF has said "its as good if not better" so all I can do is try it out next week.

Finally got there. After 4 phone calls adding up to over 3hrs today!
2 phones calls suggested i lost my loyalty. So after a suggestion on here (thanks) i phoned through to retentions. Who not only (after speaking with his manager) confirmed i wouldnt lose my loyalty discount, but also took another £10 pm off.... amazing!
Then phoned sales to order the tivo. Spent an hour listening to a guy, who as nice as he was, went around and around.
Put me through to Manlia, who ordered the Tivo (i think) was difficult to understand to her!
Any way to confirm the order?!

Although saying that I suppose any drop in iplayer quality is qualified by Tivo suggestions and the ability to record much much more before the HDD gets too full. Every cloud.

Now that's fast and I certainly can't complain that I'm getting it sooner than I thought. Well worth take an afternoon, or maybe even a day off for! :)

I assume I should call VM before Tuesday to confirm everything is ok and by the sound of things I should also check I'm not losing my loyalty discount!

I upgraded BB from 10 > 30 and all they did was send a new modem/hub. No engineer required. TiVo being installed next Tuesday by an engineer.

If you do need an engineer install for maybe 50 or 100, perhaps someone over in the Internet forum could advise?

Don't understand why it couldn't be done in one visit though. When I had a brand new install for all 3 services it was all done in one visit, albeit with 2 engineers!

Keeping your "old" box for free would be great! Do you think they would just leave it beside the new box? Until I could at least catch up with my recordings or copy them to DVD for any keepers? We've nowhere to put the V+ box in our bedroom... :(

Never did get an e-mail, not a peep since - sorry Ron,we know your not Dean.

Whats the best time to phone to get a home based call centre?, apparently I'm hard enough to understand at the best of times.

Also has anyone got the Tivo connected via an AV-Amp, I have all my units fed from the amp to a convertor, as my plasma display is so old it only
has vga and component inputs. Its working and doesn't need replaced yet?

cheers

Re: General TiVo Discussion Part 2

I've run into a bit of a snag :( (Back story - 8am here for install, had trouble getting the downstairs box to start going, but once it did it seemed to be all fine, got the upstairs box going straight away, but came up with a funny message saying not installed right so had to get a couple of new hits from the other end). He left everything looking good and closed it but said he would call back to ensure that it had all gone ok.

The installer called back 2 hours after leaving as he said he would to make sure everything was ok, and I thought it was. Downstairs TV working fine, I was actually programming the upstairs TV with the series links. I was doing that one as it was the box that gave a funny message and the one he thought might give us trouble later.

Anyway, I've been out to an app't and come back to start programming the series links into the downstairs box only to find it didn't actually finish its download so I've no EPG past Saturday night!!

I've set it connecting, it's now gone through preparing, connecting, getting info, disconnecting and is now loading info at 67% but still no further along on the EPG.

Does it take this long for the EPG to load up (I started it running about 1/2 an hour ago) or do I need to ring faults/installations and see if they can get him back round before he ends the day.

I know it takes several hours for everything, but the upstairs TV had everything in so quick and it was the one that was started last...

Ah well - I suppose even if there is a small glitch as long as we can watch live, we can just record everything upstairs till we get sorted.

Anyway, if someone in the know does have any thoughts on it let me know what you think I should do - ie just leave it ticking along or ring straight away.

edit to add:
in the Network Diagnostics I'm seeing Port Configuration Test Failed, so I'm off to call faults :(

2nd edit:
Of course as soon as I call the EPG starts loading but I still think there may be a problem... The HD channels are freezing and sound stuttering. I wonder if this failed port test has anything to do with it. Couldn't get hold of the installer so am going to wait half an hour or so and then ring faults and see if they can do a diagnostic.

Well looks like I've just recieved my sweetener. Chap phoned from sales confirming my TIVO install on Tuesday and said they would be upgrading my BB from 10mb to 20mb for free. I have multi room already.

Is there a 20mb service or did he mean 30mb?

Anyway nice one VM :)

I have a 32 inch Panasonic and a 20 inch Samsung. I don't see much difference on the Samsung (but I actually need to tweak a few TV settings now) and I am only seeing a difference on the Panasonic if I'm really looking for it. Others have said it's more noticable on the larger TV's

As I understand it, you would need to have the Superhub installed to get 30meg.

The 20meg is still active; it's the one i've got as I'm worried about the problems reported by some people using superhub. So I'm sticking with a completely problem free 20meg, separate modem/router solution for the time being.

Thanks. Not as bigger sweetener as free multi room but better than a kick in the teeth from Murdock. This is all rather exciting isn't it or do I need to get out more often?

When I go back the EPG to a programme that is available on catchup, how do I just watch it? When I select it it takes me to the main catchup tv menu and I have to manually search for it. Can't I just select it and watch it???

I'm a bit confused. As an XL and L customer, I got the email on Tuesday and I had to use the online service to book my appt. The first available slot was 23rd April. I put in two slots, 23rd being one of them.

Today I get an email titled "TIVO - SIGN UP ONLINE" with various codes and ref numbers and down in the text "we're sending one of our technicians round on 20/04/1 between 1 and 6.

This is a problem as no one is in.

So can I call up to deal with this? They turned me away before, will they now? Do I do it online?

But more to the point, how did this happen? Surely they should have asked if I could take a different date rather than just picking what suits them.

I've just tried with a program that I know is available on demand (it was Cookery School from Channel 4). When I accessed it from the EPG there was no option to play it. I instead went to explore this show and went to the episode that was on today - it said it was not available. I then went to it through the on demand menu (4 OD) and I could play it from there. Is it anything to do with just having had it installed today? Does the EPG somehow need to 'catchup'? The C icon was next to it in the EPG. This was the feature I was really looking forward to, rather than searching through the whole list of on demand stuff.
Thanks in advance.

Had the Tivo installed this morning and very impressed so far. Installation was very professional but it did take 40 minutes as needed to download software from the US! I would have thought this could have been done back at the office/depot as the installer could do nothing whilst this was going on.

During the dead time, the installer did explain how to use the remote record feature via the Virgin web site which works a treat. Just need an Iphone Tivo remote app now and will be very happy.

Re: General TiVo Discussion Part 2

I have a lot of issues today..

I have my Tivo hooked up to my Samsung Amp via Optical out (No HDMI on my amp). Intermittently I lose the audio completely on and SD broadcast altogether (audio i just Linear Stereo). If I switch to HD (thus the audio is Dolby Digital), the audio comes back. If I then flick back to and SD braodcast, it SOMETIMES comes back on.

I can fix this temporarily by selecting Dolby - PCM in settings, buth then I won't get Dolby Digital when watching an HD movie.

They have offered to swap the box on Monday, but wondered whether this is a bug that anyone else had experienced? Its a pain in the a***. Not impressed so far with Tivo today.

Engineer turned up just after 12pm. It was his first TIVO install and he didn't leave until 2pm as it took a while for him to set it all up as he had to adjust the level of the signal coming into my house and then it took ages to download all the info to the box as he said the server was in the USA. He made a few phonecalls to other engineers who had already installed them and to ask for there help/advice about it, but it all went well. He had a play with it and was really impressed and said he was now going to get one!! Have had a little go with it and so far, so good! I haven't had any problems with the remote. It seems to work from anywhere in my living room so maybe the other poster who was having problems has a faulty remote? Have tried setting recordings from my PC and that worked great. Have also set up some series links and that was straight forward too. Picture of non-HD channels is good although maybe not as sharp as on the V+ in my opinion, but nothing worth worrying about. So far, very pleased with it. Will take a while to get used to it and use all the features especially as I wasn't left a manual so have been working it out for myself but have found the manual online so will have a read about it. :)

I've noticed there's two different images of two different looking remotes. One looks a bit cheaper than the other. The best example I can say is that on this cheaper-looking remote the Virgin Media logo is printed on, and on the nicer looking one it is engraved Is this a prototype one? Or one that will be used on cheaper boxes?

0001 Additional V box
V+HD box
0002 Additoanl V Box

Does this mean that I will be keeping both of my original boxes?. The price quoted is £102.55 per month, which is what I was expecting. I won't be too upset eitehr way to be honest!. Any of the staffers have an idea?

No. To get the discount on the bill for the additional box a code has to be placed against both STBs, which is why you get two entries on the contract

I've got a Samsung amp too and am taking sound via HDMI and it blips going between SD and HD and visa versa losing the audio for a few seconds. It's the amp tho as it does it switching inputs too, it's just slow. I don't think it's the TiVo's issue.

My amp is taking audio only through optical, but the audio doesn't just go for a few seconds - it goes until I switch to another HD channel. Even then it only SOMETIMES comes back on again on an SD channel. The Samsung amp is switching the audio correctly as the display changes from Dolby Digital, but there is no sound there.

I've watched with some amusement all the shenanigans with the way that Virgin Media has rolled out Tivo and without a doubt people have reacted somewhat unreasonably at times - however, Offering a 1st and 2nd choice and then giving people a completely different date and time is a good way of annoying an awful lot of people.

They would have been much better just offering a date - it's a bit like telling people they have a choice of school for their children and then telling them that they have to have a school 20 miles away.

Fail!

Having said that I now have a date earlier than first offered - just hope they come when promised - not hopeful based on their current track record

I had my Tivo installed today with no problems. The enginer was polite and friendly and knew exactly what he was going. He had to boost the signal from the box in the street. Connected a couple of wires, went through some set up screens and it was done. He waited while the Tivo downloaded it's stuff and then gave me a brief tour of the box. He'd done 6 instalations today and I was his last. He said that of 4 out of six there were internet connecting troubles. Which Virgin would have had to sort out. Luckily mine worked perferctly, Very pleased and satisfied with the whole process.
