It just amazed me how he can make the point about having a young side being a reason for why they've lost the last two games.

Yes he said those things. Taking things out of context means you remove the context and portray a certain part of what is said as indictive of the whole thing. You said it was his excuses for the loss but you left out the part where he talks about the defending and the set-pieces.

In fact he didn't give the reasons you gave to the question of why they lost today. He gave in response to this question:

"You have sweep aside an awful lot of teams in this league yet over the last 18 months when you have played Chelsea and Manchester United you invariably have lost?"

Because those points out of context make it look like he was blind to the awful defending of Arsenal and the great defending of Chelsea when he in fact mentioned those things. He just said he feels that on top of that, over the last 18 months, Arsenal's inexperience as been a factor against the top sides and that Arsenal were unlucky in the fixture list. Which there were. Both of these losses are not fatal if spread out but two in a row gives a big physiological blow.

It reminds me of the whole hassle over when he said Drogba does do much when what he actually said was he doesn't appear to do much but can then score two goals from nowhere.

I see Liverpool fans showed their class again on the weekend, holding up a Steaua Bucharest 1986 banner taunting Everton fans because that was the year they were banned from the European cup, which Bucharest won. The reason they were banned? The Heysel disaster the year before. Some Liverpool fans don't know their own history, basically celebrating the fact 39 innocent people were killed.

If there was a unknown genius out there Wenger would buy him. I hear Remy is a maybe this summer. We need a forward, a good defensive midfielders who can also cover in defense, and a goalkeeper. The forward would need to be able to play on the wing because the 4 - 3- 3 formation does not suit a out and out striker let alone 2 of them.

I don't know. It's hard. Song has grown quite nicely into a good defensive midfielder position. He is a first team player. So do we have two of them? It's hard to see how tactically that would work. They could play just behind Fabagas and Arshavin. (if they are still around). Then we have the forward problem. Does Persie, who is too good to be left out, go out on the wing and become another attacking midfielder with our new, strong 'complete' forward up front? Or do we buy a strong forward who plays on the wing? Either way that leaves Diaby and Walcott out of the side. We're already leaving out Ramsey, Wilshire, Vela and Eduardo. I can see why Wenger has trouble with buying a forward. Arsenal are so close to a complete side with Persie fit.

I do think a strong forward that can play the way Arsenal play and plays along side Arshavin and Persie would work.

Wenger and Benitez should really skip the press conferences. The Aston Villa story really was a joke and lord knows why O'Neill played along, maybe he was quoted out of context as well. Phil Brown doesn't speak anymore and that's one less distraction for his team. Wenger speeches after will always contain a comment or two against the winning team (or lack of respect) and that will always be the focus of the stories afterwards.

Benitez noticed this after his criticisms on refs are given widely different treatment to when Fergie does the same and now he avoids it.

Anyway, with greater goal difference and one point off the top United aren't doing bad for a team who recently on CF were laughingly compared to West Ham :D

Not particularly. OK they're not the worst team in the premiership but reminding myself of your comparing them to United never fails to cheer me up.

And you're right, luck won't come in to it. Just something else instead to change the situation of tonight being the first win of 2010.

I didn't actually compare them, I said they had a lot in common/ similar, both up to their necks in debt, both have a lot of players not fit to wear the shirt and both may well end the season pot less, guess now you might win the league cup though.

First of many wins.

I think you said a bit more than that. OK let's see....

My first post said...

Quote:

the 4-nil result demonstrated the vast difference in class between United and West Ham. Good result
And you replied...

Quote:

I'd say both teams are quite similar actually, both clubs have to many players not fit to wear each clubs respective shirts and both may well end the season winning nothing because of it, difference is though it'll only come as a shock to one set of fans.
And I came back with....

Quote:

One team has plenty of either current or respected former internationals. The other isn't. One is 2 points from the top of the league, the other is hovering around the relegation zone. But yes as you say, quite similar.
You replied...

Quote:

We'll have to wait until the end of the season, this United team remind me very much of the Liverpool team at the end of the '80's, stale, with plenty of players past it and plenty more not up to it.
So, still stand by those words with United 1 point from top after some poor performances? Funnily enough my response to the above back then was also...

Quote:

Yep, good luck battling relegation.
Well, one of us seems to have been fairly prophetic

Yes because any other season the race would be all but over, it's not so much Utd winning it so much as the other teams throwing it away, this season will go down as the league no one wanted to win.

The league is a lot more competitive with the smaller teams getting results against the bigger ones. Whoever wins it will have won one of the hardest leagues.

That's another way of looking at it and a fair one tbh, that's due to the gap being closed on the bigger clubs by the rest more than anything.

On several points, Terry is a disgrace to all his mates, he is married, and goes around poking all his mates wife's, if it was mine, the git would not be standing. He has got away lightly for what he has done. But there again, football always stands by the wealthy, where players from clubs in lower leagues get hammered, pampered players only want the money, and don't give a damn about the shirt they where or mates.

Secondly, What the hell is wrong with Spurs, they were pathetic last night, top four finish, no chance, top six no chance on last nights performance. Come on Harry kick them up the back side.

Who else thinks it was a penalty against Fabregas last night? Micah Richards got pulled for a similar action early in the season

Glad it wasn`t given mind, personally think Arsenal deserved the win, i just don`t understand why they allways try and play through teams rather that get to the bye-line and cross it, it seems the score when they go to the wings...

Liverpool are also not in their normal position. Only the top 3 are the usual suspects found in the Champions League spots. I would have said Spurs and Villa before but they seem to be slipping a bit. It is mostly the same. This is the beauty, or drawback, of a league. Teams can have good runs of form, there can be surprises, but the sheer amount of games means there is an invertible regression to the mean in most cases. The season has been the most interesting for years but looking at the table now and there are few shocks. In the end the good teams usually get the results in the course of 38 games.

I love the league myself. You can't fault it. If your 1st you were the best team. No arguments. Man United are not worse than Leeds but lost to them, great for exictment but the FA is not the test of a team. United are however better than Arsenal, Liverpool, Spurs, Villa, City and so on. Chelsea, so far, are slightly better than them. It's the only real test IMO. (Although I love the Champions League as well).

Quote:

It wasn't a penalty because it was outside the box. Would have been a free-kick.

Arsenal are much more successful at scoring by passing though the defence and sliding it in. They have been like that for a long time, I have lost count of the amount of times Henry just slid a ball past the keeper with the side of his foot. Wonderful. That kind of football is just how Arsenal play. The type of goal we scored last night, crossed from the wings, is a rarity for our squad because we don't have great headers of the ball and quite a short team.

Last year the difference in points between Arsenal in 4th and Fulham in 7th was 19 points. Yet under this system one game could mean that Fulham, not Arsenal, go into Europe's best competition. That may please people sick of the 'top 4' but Arsenal earned that spot last year and to take it away from them one the back of one or two games renders a large part of the season pointless. If your not in the league title contention then why bother trying to finish are higher than 7th? Might as well rest players for the play-offs and other matches.

More than likely is it will become pointless as the quality of England's 4th entry into the league will drop further and UEFA will just yank the spot.

It also overestimates the money from the Champions League, Arsenal make 13% of their revenue from Europe. Most of their money comes from the Premier League and matchday gates.

Anyway they have to wait until the current TV deal expires and if the Premier League insists on this plan I suggest the top teams break away from negotiating the TV deal as a whole league and do their own deals. Arsenal, United, Chelsea, Liverpool and City can make deals with Sky themselves. Maybe do live streaming of all their games live, I'd pay a subscription to Arsenal to watch every game (or every home game depending on rights) streamed over the internet.

the top teams doing their own deals would destroy the league. Non of the other clubs would get any air time and be able to make any money they would all go out of business. Even as a fan of a top four club I can see that the TV time needs to be shared around and other clusb have a right for their matches to be shown.

I can see that too and I would agree. The thing is if the other 16 clubs in the league decide to out-vote the top 4 and decide that one of those top 4 places should lose their Champions League spot just cos a team that finishes between 5 and 7 can get it then they have the ability to hit back.

At the moment I see at most Arsenal, United, Liverpool, City, and Spurs voting against the top 4 system since they all have a chance of finishing up there. That still leaves the 14 votes needed. All of which will vote for it because they don't have the ability to realistically hit the top 4 so would welcome this play-off system. They are much more likely to get that Champions League spot though a couple of games than a whole season.

Funny people don't say the Championship is devalued/ pointless by a play off system and there is a lot more at stake there than just 13% of income. Lets not get to carried ayway either we are talking about the team that finished in 4th place not the Champions or even the runners up but the team that finished waaaayyyy behind you talk about the gap between Fulham and Arsenal but the gap between Arsenal and Man U was pretty similar and as for resting players what do you think happens now, those dull April games that are meaningless with players going through the motions would be a thing of the past. This season has been the exception rather than the rule and the PL want to give a chance for this trend to continue.

Quote:

I don't think it more likely at all, Man City, Villa, Everton and dare I say it Spuds are more than capable of competing and getting to the knock out stage and preserving the 4th entry.

13% is a massive advantage over the other clubs and not an earned one imo from finishing 4th

Yup. That's why United won the league and Arsenal didn't. We're not talking about implementing a play-off so that the Premiership title goes to a play-off.

As for resting players what do you think happens now, those dull April games that are meaningless with players going through the motions would be a thing of the past. This season has been the exception rather than the rule and the PL want to give a chance for this trend to continue.
That's what a league is! Everyone plays each other twice and sees where they end up. It's not about a few games but all of them. So towards the end of the season, when most points are allocated, it can get boring for the squads not in contention but there we go. The solution is not to say "well, you've finished 4th over 38 games but now for 2 games which could dump you out of the position you ave merited over the course of the last 7 or so months.". Besides it would still make meaningless games because as soon as a team knows they are in the top 7 then why bother?

Quote:

I don't think it more likely at all, Man City, Villa, Everton and dare I say it Spuds are more than capable of competing and getting to the knock out stage and preserving the 4th entry.
They are also capable of breaking into 4th then and earning the place. Not trying to stay in the top 7 to try and get the play-off spot. The money argument is rubbish because Spurs and I think Villa have spent more than Arsenal and Liverpool but fail to break though.

Quote:

13% is a massive advantage over the other clubs and not an earned one imo from finishing 4th
Well it's more earned from a league system, where they have played to a standard all season, than a playoff.

Staying in the top 7 will be harder and give extra incentive to all the middle table clubs, don't see any problems with it, the team that finishes runner up to the medal places isn't automatically guaranteed a place at the top table anymore, big deal.

Neither have spent more than Liverpool, Rafa has wasted hundreds of millions.

There is a forth place though and shouldn't the 4th best team in England be awarded with it? It seems to be a attempt to get one over on the top .

No reason why they should be awarded it, it's 4th best after all and it seems to me like an idea to make the league more interesting and competetive than an attempt to get one over anyone, after all if it were to happen this season there's a very good chance Liverpool would be in position 5,6 or 7. The league has to come up with inovative new ideas, some work like this one (imo), some don't like the 39th game.

Could this be a way that the PL could make the spots more exciting, especially if there are say four clubs going for it.

But, the way Spurs have been playing this season, l'd be happy if they settled for EUFA, or whatever they call it now, l CANNOT see them getting a CL spot.

Well if we send the 4 best teams in England to the Champions League it makes sense to send the top 4. They are the best. Otherwise it may be the 4th best team in England or it may be the 7th best team who won a play off.

You say Liverpool might finish out of the top 4 and if that happens the team that takes their place deserves the Champions League spot because they were the better team that season.

My main problem is it partly ignores the form and results of the teams during the season to focus on a couple of games. So a team can finish 10/20 points behind but be sent to the Champions League. It may make it more exciting but it defeats the purpose of a league in a sense.

Turkey Machine 17-02-2010 14:50

Re: Football : Season 2009/2010

What they're proposing is essentially the same system they have in the Championship, where 3rd to 6th play-off for the last promotional place. The payoff with the Champions League is the increased TV time and revenues. With other teams knocking on the door of the top 4 but not having the clout to break into it on a more permanent basis, it could be a good strategy but it does de-value the slot somewhat. Unless the FA changes the entry system for the Champions League so 4th goes into the first qualifying stage instead of the 2nd qualifying stage before hitting the proper last 32.

There is no prize in other sports for coming 4th and we will be sending the top 4, as the Championship send their top 3 clubs up every season.

I don't think it does, the Dutch de valued their position amongst Europe's elite but that's because they didn't have enough teams with quality to make play offs work, our league does, the likes of Villa, Everton, Man C, Spuds etc wouldn't look out of place in the Champions league, well maybe Spurs would....

The Championship don't send the top 3. It's hard to argue the three promoted teams are the best 3 teams if one of them came way under another team but won the playoff. It's actually hard to compare because the final league table in the first division tends to be closer than the final table in the Premiership. With no more than a few points between the teams in the playoff places compared to the 19 point range the proposed playoff places covered. If 3 Championship sides played with a winning consistency yet one missed out on Promotion because of one game then we might see more questioning and disquiet about the system.

If no other sport awards fourth places then I think it is better to remove the Champions League place altogether. I really think it's hard to suggest we would be sending the best four teams in England because there is a chance we will not. You can't say the 4th best team is the winner of a playoff.

They do send their top 3 teams as they are the ones that win promotion based on the rules of that league and that is how the final Champions League place will be allocated to. Oh and Ipswich and Bolton both went into the Championship play offs 9 or 10 points ahead of their nearest rivals in recent years with no hint of disquiet.

The ref in the Arsenal game was ok. I think he shouldn't have been so active in placing the ball at the feet of Porto while Fabanski was still protesting, the ref should also be out of the area of play during a free-kick. Not blocking the keepers view and one of the defenders. Does seem to be within the rules though and it was good to see him listen to Wenger's rant rather than hide away or send him to the stands.
