How does that fit in with this from http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hallmark_Channel_(UK)?

2010 rebrand

In June 2009, a memorandum leaked to the television trade newspaper Broadcast stated that NBC Universal plans to rebrand the Hallmark Channel as a Universal Channel in 2010. The "Hallmark Channel" brand is licensed to NBC Universal from Crown Media and is due to expire. An NBC Universal denied such a rebrand would happen, though an official announcement could potentially be made in July or August 2009.[3]

I read it on Wikipedia, so it must be true! ;-)

Well I imagine the PictureBox service was the surprise they announced, so they've delivered there. Now it's just a case of when these HD channels materialise.

Its the ones I haven't seen that I want to watch!

Having said that at least Virgin are trying to improve the HD options. Its better than nothing.

Got to be better than the silly repeats that Sky Movies does where the same film is on at the same time each day for a week :rant:

Even though ESPN is coming to VM, at this stage we don't know if ESPN are going to have a sep channel for PL Football, but customers will still have to pay for it - on Sky it is free.

Sky is likely to charge about £10 a month for access to the new ESPN channel carrying Premiership games – about the same price Sky customers had to pay to receive Setanta's package of channels.

I am really not trying to be obtuse - but surely it isnt free with Sky, you still have to pay for the sports package, which even on Sky is a premium package - or perhaps I am wrong (it has been known on occasion ;) )

EDIT - Just realised you meant that ESPN is free with Sky, I thought you meant premireship football, my appologies.........

Arthurgray50@blu 04-07-2009 19:38

Re: Coming Soon to Virgin TV (2009)

I spoke to Sky about this, possible charge at the end of an experiment, and they advised me that they will keep an eye on the position, it will be free at the moment, and it largely depend on wether ESPN do offer another channel to take the football. But l cannt see that happening, as the amount of football will be shown, would be the same as Setanta, it would depend on ESPN, doing a Setanta and offering Sports News channel.

My only arguement is, why the hell something isn't being done by VM to getting ESPN America or Classic channels on free as a taster for customers, If you look at the channels, they do supply some great sport, and l am sure customers would love it, but there agian do VM care about customers - no, Media Boy has said they could start from August, strange that is when the season starts.

ESPN have already said they will be launching another channel which will show the football. So why can't you see it happening? How would it depend on them doing a news channel? I'm really not seeing the logic that brings you to that conclusion at all?

Your only argument is "why aren't VM giving away a channel they have to pay a per-subscriber rate to for free"? If they added ESPN America or Classic to the XL pack for example, even for a limited time, they'd have to pay ESPN a fortune, they'd need to renegotiate the contract to beable to do it at a commercial viable expense. And we all know how long it takes to negotiate carriage contracts.

Re: Coming Soon to Virgin TV (2009)

I agree that the £5 monthly fee seems a good deal for those who want it although it has to be said the list of films is limited at the mo which isnt surprising since Sky has a virtual monopoly of films.

Having said that, I usualy buy 2/3 DVDs per week quite cheaply so I wont be taking up the option anyway so it wont be a good deal for me personally.

Still, it is a step in the right direction taking into account that some of the films will be in HD.

I note that ESPN Classic is not on that pdf so one must assume that VM is still choosing not to carry ESPN Classic?

I did email ESPN about carriage on VM and they replied by saying that we should ask VM which one woulkd interpret as meaning that VM has decided not to carry this channel.

Down the line, on Sky I would imagine that ESPN, ESPN America and ESPN Classic will constitute the ESPN bundle, probably at something in the region of a tenner a month.

I never said anything, you just asked what PDF and I linked you to it. But either way, it means there's a pretty good chance of both channels being on VM, otherwise they wouldn't put it there, and give them channel numbers.

It's not about VM's choice or decisions, it's about price.

I don't know who would pay whom to get ESPN Classic on VM, but clearly they haven't agreed on how to make money from it (yet?).

Five of them appear to be testing HD but don't ask me what as the picture is distorted because I don't have a HD box to view the full test.

The channels are labled as follows.

VMTest1 - Testing HD
VMTest2 - Testing HD
VMTest3 - Blank
VMTest4 - Testing HD
VMTest5 - Testing HD
VMTest6 - Testing HD

Epg on all of them are labled as "Test Schedule"

All those channels sound awful, and this is the first time we've had HD channels being tested. This is a step towards the HD channels they promised finally appearing.

Re: Coming Soon to Virgin TV (2009)

Just saw this on http://www.vmhd.blogspot.com/

"Six HD channels now testing on Virgin Media
According to Jasmeet:

The following are now in testing

* VMTest1 - History HD
* VMTest2 - National Geographic Channel HD
* VMTest3 - FX HD
* VMTest4 - MTVNHD
* VMTest5 - History HD
* VMTest6 - Eurosport HD

I cannot verify this but Jasmeet's normally on the money. (Please, no quips about VMTest5 - History HD being a +1...)
If this becomes the promised channels, with C4 HD instead of a second History HD channel, then that's a pretty broad selection. ITV HD for the football would be welcome, too. "

They sound pretty good to me BUT FX is interesting as its a Fox network and no Cnhl4 or ITV HD which i thought would be a shoe-in - so not sure how true these can be....

cupcakes aka dd 08-07-2009 11:07

Re: Coming Soon to Virgin TV (2009)

If true with C4HD bolted on this would be great news. I think with this line up they will retain alot of people who would otherwise have moved. I will be staying if this comes into play.

I know you have your die hard "I want 40HD channels" people but this would be a good foundaion to entice people back from Sky combined with VM's other services.

Nothing wrong with critisism that is true, but at least it a step in the right direction if they are testing hd channels to see how it effects the system, and all the hd channels meantion are plausible ones that mgiht launch

And a further clarification to that, is that people can only see a "list" of testing channels not the actual channels themselves. Only certain VM staff members can see the actual channels testing.

Don't assume that because a certain channel is listed as testing, that, that'll be the channel actually launching, it may not. Tests are just that, tests, to check the quality of the network.

I would be surprised (or perhaps not, as it's VM we're talking about here...) if ESPN HD is not among the first tranche of HD channels to launch.

What is itv_hid and ITV HID1? They are on the list of channels in the engineer menu as not provisioned on my Samsung SMT-2110C box.

I think the only reason we might get ESPN so quickly is because ESPN know they need to get it on all platforms as soon as they can and VM know they need to have access to all the football content.

They're for the red button/interactive apps on ITV. Although they appear to be channels, they're not. You'll find other such similar "channels" there too.

The following are now in testing

* VMTest1 - History HD
* VMTest2 - National Geographic Channel HD
* VMTest3 - FX HD
* VMTest4 - MTVNHD
* VMTest5 - History HD
* VMTest6 - Eurosport HD

They sound pretty good to me BUT FX is interesting as its a Fox network and no Cnhl4 or ITV HD which i thought would be a shoe-in - so not sure how true these can be....

for me .... out of that lot only FX HD appeals and maybe Eurosport HD. The absence of CH4 and ITV HD from testing, if true is disconcerting ( previous point about football well raised )

however as Sky have the vast majority of Movies and Sports HD tied up ( until OFCOM gets off its arse or something puts them to sleep - DC) then it would at least represent a positive move forward especially after 4 years of going nowhere in hD

Of the non premium HD channels carried by Sky or owned by Sky only Sci-fi HD would be missing ( ITV & CH4 as well obviously)

If the HD channels, being advertised on this thread, will be aired, then it will be bye bye from me, and get rid of VM, l am not waiting nearly 18 months, for HD channels that l don't even watch on normal TV.

They're not being advertised...

And I'm not sure what else you were expecting, that was pretty much what I was expecting VM would launch in HD.

Wow with your sky fanboy talk I already thought you were with them :erm:

Anyway yeah they maybe some average channels but it's a good start from vm (if true). Nothing for me but loads of people will be delighted with them

discovery should be in place of history, history is mainly old footage in awful quality so not much benefit in hd, whereas discovery would be far more worthy.

I'm sure Discovery will come later on, it's a given. It may come in this batch, considering History HD is listed twice.

to tell the truth we all should know that we ware going to get a line up like VM is testing currently.

i know that out of the testing line up i will use 2 channels regular which are Eurosport HD and FX HD all the rest are bonus to me.

Media Boy has stated that the second History HD channel may end up being Bio HD maybe he knows something we dont.
like has been entioned the current testing line HD line up is a decent start and more will come in time lets just hope we get them launched to customer soon.

Possible channels that second History HD channel could be, are:

* Channel 4 HD
* ITV HD
* Sci Fi HD
* Bio. HD
* Luxe.tv HD (hope not)
* Rush HD
* Discovery HD
* Nat Geo Wild HD
* Crime & Investigation HD
* Disney Cinemagic HD

Some are more likely than others, of course.

What channels were people expecting in HD? Its unlikely that Sky were ever going to give them to VM in the first place, so there isn't that many left.

People are moaning about no HD, then when VM add 6 HD channels for testing, people still moan :rolleyes:

I don't think VM can win with people on here

Don't forget folks that VM have already announced that they will be putting Living HD on their EPG in the near future.
As far as those six that are currently testing I for one will be chuffed to receive the likes of History, Nat Geo and Eurosport in HD.
I honestly cannot see what you are moaning about Arthur:confused: if these six are the new HD channels thats pretty decent indeed...what on earth were you expecting VM to announce, all the Sky channels in HD?
