Re: Virgin 4Mb to upgrade to 10Mb February - Summer

I seem to remember the last time there was a 'free upgrade' we (meaning customers down here in Devon) were at the end of the list, getting our upgrade well after everyone else in the country.

I suspect a lot of us down here at the a**e end of the country have got so tired of seeing TBC under South West/Newton Abbott this time that we'll just do what I did today and take advantage of any special offers and upgrade everything to XL anyway (Off-topic, man, isn't there a load of crap on all those TV channels nowadays :D)

/* And since my poor old modem is getting a bit tired, I did get a better modem and wireless router to sweeten the deal too, although the old one seems to coping fine with 20 MB */

Still waiting for my New Modem. 3rd time to ring VM. Last Modem lost in post (UPS not delivered it).

VM Tech said Swansea will be last to be upgraded (his opinion) as we have 10yr old cable & thats newer than others (he said)

Newer cable so last to get upgrade, well that makes perfect sense

Since upgrade in winnersh (Reading) always getting 10mb. Although pings in COD4 seem 10ms higher so now at 65ms and I never start before anyone else like i did.

Overall I'm happy.

Agreed, it's the waiting and not knowing what's happening that makes people frustrated. All you can do is check that your modem is capable of handling 10Mb then reboot it occasionally to check if you have been upgraded

To checkout your modem go the bottom of the following page and enter your BB size. I'm sorry I can't give a more direct link.

That link can tell porkies, because we do get people ringing in and it has said their modem is fine for the speed they are on and we have had to replace said modem.

So if unsure post what model you have and someone will advise you if its OK for the speed you are paying for.

In most cases it will be OK.;)

Still no update since 12 August ............ and what does TBC actually mean (sometime in the future)?

Even BT are able to give RFS (estimated ready for service) dates for exchange upgrades, come on VM - when will the remaining areas be upgraded ??

TBC = To Be Confirmed, which (and the point has been made before) is an odd thing to say, given that no particular date was ever specified in the first place. By rights, all of the TBCs should now say 'September 2008', as VM are still stating in their small print that the upgrade rollout is due to complete this month.
And who is to say it won't be?

The page has been updated. 9th September.

http://allyours.virginmedia.com/html.../schedule.html

So Newton Abbot, Liverpool, Wolverhampton, Birmingham Perry Bar and Croydon. TBC for everyone else. Absolutely typical. Only hope is they are upgrading half of the areas by numerical group in September so maybe the other 4 (some very large areas) will follow in October or November.

LaineY 09-09-2008 14:08

it could also mean TBC

There's been another update today (10th Sept), leaving only Haringey, Bradford & Sheffield and Swansea areas to be 'confirmed'.

The end of Summer is reckoned to be at the September equinox, and this year that falls on 22nd September at precisely 15:44. Did you hear that Virgin Media? You've got 1 week and 5 days to get Bradford (and the rest) upgraded!

It's true that they do, but they have the strange habit of being put back regularly.

Unfortunately, due to a rip in the space time continuum caused today when they switched on that Hadron Collider thingy, all TBC upgrades have been put back until Billie Piper rejoins Dr Who. Quite right too imho :D.

Sorry all.

Just re-boot the modem and hey presto all will be well. You may find that for a while the speed may drop off the max on occasions.

C'mon Virgin Media, pull your finger out, I was told by customer services that the Wakefield area would be one of the first to be upgraded (due to the regions large size).

To be fair, they DID announce more (but not enough) dates throughout the Summer just ended, but the most important date is end of this month, which they are still sticking to. They might just surprise us in the remaining 8 days and a bit...

Absolutely. I'd much rather have 3 HD channels in total than 10Mbs broadband but other customers will be more bothered. Round here there's a lot of aluminium in the ground that means a lot of people can get sub 10Mbs speeds on ADSL (even on 2+), there will be other ultra urban areas in a cabled area in a similar boat. For example I'm pretty close to the exchange but due to the aluminium I could only get 7Mbs. A mate gets only about 5Mbs but he's not cabled. A neighbouring exchange is so poor that it only has 2 LLU operators (1 until recently). Analogue is the biggie but that's not happening totally till 2010.

I really mean they can get on with 50Mbs so the CEO can stop blabbering on about broadband and how we're "bandwidth constrained".

Pretty much, I think, although you can do it in the morning or afternoon if you want to make it more exciting. Some people have reported getting the upgrade without having to reboot, but if this happens you should reboot anyway, or you'll cop a b******ing from eth01! (don't ask).

It doesn't say so, but the page has been updated.

It's now saying: Wolverhampton area, Birmingham (Perry Barr) are complete.

Now that only leaves: Liverpool area, Newton Abbot area, Bradford and Sheffield area to be done in September, so I'm guessing these 3 areas will be done today and tomorrow, If they stick to their deadlines.

Are you looking at the same page as me? lol

If they stick to their deadlines, they should also do Haringey & Swansea..which are still shown as TBC:rolleyes:

I am getting horrible download speeds considering the upgrade is done.

Getting max speed off the VM FTP, but from anywhere else i'm struggling to get 100kb

Swansea and Haringey are now listed as September (with just today and tomorrow to go :) ).

probably overnight tonight or tomorrow night then.

Re: Virgin 4Mb to upgrade to 10Mb February - Summer

Since Swansea and Haringey are now listed before September that means the Bradford area should be done by the end of today.

Nothing as of yet.

Motorola 4100
From December 2000/January 2001 Customers started to receive the Motorola 4100. It is Docsis only (so will not work reliably if at all, on the parts of the network that use Eurodocsis). The 4100 models was Ethernet and USB, and Motorola soon introduced a model with USB as well, the 4100 (see below). Apart from the USB connector the 4100 also had a Standby button on the front. The 4100 remained in use until approximately October 2001.

Does not support 10 or 20Mbps Tiers of Service

Thanks for the link wdinat. Do you work for VM Tech Support?

It's getting a little confusing, as users on other forums say their 4100 is handling 10mb perfectly. The official VM site says the same. I don't know much about the Docsis/Eurodocsis issue. How does that affect users on VM?..

Is there a FAQ somewhere I can read? :dunce:

Yes I do and you need to call in and get that modem swapped out for our new Ambit 256.

FAQ's you are reading them in any post on this Forum.;)

Re: Virgin 4Mb to upgrade to 10Mb February - Summer

Just been upgraded here in Bradford, but suffering poor speeds so far.

Had the "SW INIT - Via Config file cm-10240-512" message in the modem logs, but struggling to get over 5000/400kbps on the bbmax speedtest. Getting a wildly fluctuating download rate between 4500 and 7500kbps from VM FTP site.

I wonder if this is due to me having a SB4100 modem? Although I did read a few posts on this very forum, admittedly some time ago, stating that people were getting 10mb with them just fine?

Nath
