Lol I remember Picking downloads on napster and looking at the pings 500-1000.

Mind you that was dial-up with £30-40 call charges

A higher upload speed will help with your gaming... especially if you want to create your own server for your mates or whoever to join you, but it wont lower your ping any... I have been on the 1mb down 100k up, 2mb down 200k up and am now on the 3mb with 300k up and i've seen no change what-so-ever in my ping, still between 20 - 30 on the UK servers.

Got ntl 1mb(256k up?) And can ping it about about 10-15 on Uk servers

Re: ntl Confirms 10Mb Broadband Speed Increase

Ping is affected only by distance (hops), and traffic.
Bandwidth only helps if there is local traffic like a p2p application running. It cannot however, reduce ping when compared to the same connection under low contention/usage.

i'm also connected through ntl, and as far as I know, they only do 1mb 2mb and 3mb with 100k, 200k and 300k up. I'm a quake 2 freak and the ping does depend on what server your playing on I now have quake 4 installed and have even lower pings on some q4 uk servers 15 being my lowest.

Not true, the lower the congestion and hops from point to point, the lower the ping - and the physical distance to the server.
Hence if you ping your router it will be nr. 0 , if you ping another PC connected to your router it will be say 2ms, and as you venture further away it will increase.
A higher speed will help only in that the packet will not get stuck behind others trying to get to your machine, but realistically most gamers are not P2Ping or running windows update at the same time, thus this is not an issue.

No upgrades last night i take it guess those people who were hoping that service status statement would be the upgrades are disapointed.

I thought someone said the 4th. I'm on 1mb so Iâ₠¬ÃƒÆ’¢â€žÂ¢m only interested in seeing if it does roll out and what the 10mb is like to use.

That would be due to other factors, nildram peering may have been worse or the fact bulldog is llu and you bypass bt's network could be a factor.

That's not true. Upload has very little to do with ping response times, and upload has nothing to do with the speeds we're talking about.

A ping can be faster or slower due to the number of hops, the quality of the network etc

Re: ntl Confirms 10Mb Broadband Speed Increase

If your upload bandwidth is being fully utilised your download will slow, ping times will increase and so on as you cannot acknowledge packets.

I see this all the time when I'm downloading / UPLOADING and playing games online at the same time.

This **may** explain the low ping times experienced on the Bulldog service.

You can't tell people you will be making a 10meg service for those people who are on 3 meg and then not deliver. That actively encourages people to upgrade from a package below in the hope they get this 10meg. Please don't tell me there arn't many people who have done the same as me. It's mis-selling a product.

I am 99% sure they will too, as whenever i have reasoned with them in the past regards what is proper i have always got what i deserved.

Like i say, NTL won't want people asking for a refund on the difference anwyay, it will be out before Dec 31st guaranteed.

I haven't mis-quoted you....
You have used the difference between the 2meg and 3 meg haven't you? - therefore you can't ask a refund.

You did mis-quote me.

I can ask for a refund and i would get it. I say would because it won't happen because they will do the 10meg before the year is out. There's no point carrying on this if and buts conversation anyway, lets just see what happens.

Lets say my friend was on a 56k modem and on the same network/isp as me i.e. same number of hops, contention etc), and I had a 579 upload, he would ping the same as me?

Not trying to be funny, just trying to understand.

have they actually written to you and said you're getting 10meg on a specific date or on or before a specific date? or are we basing this anticipated complaint on the press releases?

You know when i posted about complaining it was in jest. Now what do i see . Hand wringing on how you are going to sock it to NTL yet again and working out how you are going to get your money back. Jezz why don't you all put your heads together and see what else you can wring out of them.

Tell you what here's one

we don't pay for the electricity your box uses why don't you try and complain about that. You might get £1.00 back for that..

Or for those it concerns we don't supple blank DVDs or Cd's why not see if you can get that reimbursed as well .

And where is my ntl provided television, telephone and PC, I mean what is the point of you providing a STB, phone socket and CM if I have nothing to plug into them?

Weeelllll, something happened. Came in from work this morning, and all TV channels showing 'not subscribed', then eventually they started working after a few 'channel changes' yeah I know it's OT

BUT sat down just now to check the mail n stuff before I go to work and oops, no connection. So strip out router, alter TCP/IP props to automatic and have a re-boot just in case I've got to re-provision. End result a nice new IP, now just waiting for me nice new config file to come down to the STB, oh and a dead router, but thats another story .

Right, this thread is wandering off topic, and has also got rather long. I'm closing it now, and i'll post a summary of the situation as the start of "ntl 10meg broadband speed increase (part 2)".
