Can somebody explain why, when the two strikers you've got on aren't scoring, you shift to 4-3-3? We should have taken one of them off and stuct at 4-4-2, seeing most of our goals come from midfield anyway

Having said that, congrats to Donnie 'cos they played us off the park, and Thorntons goal was an absolute screamer (lucky deflection aside ;) ). I hope that they get a good draw that gets them some cash now :tu:

Re: [Merged] The Football Thread 2005/2006 Season

Can someone explain to me how FA rules work? First of all the FA say they can't investigate Shearer's elbow on Weir as the ref dealt with the matter, even though he admitted not seeing the elbow. Then only a couple of hours later they charge Cahill and Babayaro with violent conduct even though the ref clearly dealt with that incident at the time. Is there some sort immunity clause for ex England captains?

sherer 01-12-2005 11:15

Re: [Merged] The Football Thread 2005/2006 Season

the way this works is all down to the FIFA rules, although if you go to the FIFA website and look up the rules of the game this bit isn't meantioned

if the ref deals with an incident or mentions it in his match report, i.e the ref can miss something watch it on TV afterwards and include it in his report, then the FA can't take any action..

not read the full details of both cases but i read for the Shearer one that the ref mentioned the incident in his report

Yes but he didn't see the elbow making contact. He also dealt with the handbags as he spoke to both playes. Whats the difference?

Quote:

Match referee Howard Webb told officials that he did see the incident, although he did not see Shearer's elbow make contact with the Scottish defender.

sherer 01-12-2005 11:31

Re: [Merged] The Football Thread 2005/2006 Season

well we are dealing with the FA and referress here so don't expect any consistancy

i think it is to do with what the ref puts in his offical report at the end of the match where they have had a chance to see the match on TV afterwards.. they can then mention things they missed in the game but saw later

as you point out it doesn't seem to make alot of sense really and hinders the FA from taking action in cases where they should because of the stupid FIFA rules

Google or IBM to sponsor Man Utd?

Blue chip firms and mega-brands - including Google, Yahoo, IBM, Levi Strauss and Coca-Cola - are apparently lining up to take over the shirt sponsorship of Manchester United after Vodafone's decision to curtail its £9m a year shirt sponsorship deal. The Observer quotes unnamed City sources to support a theory that all are prepared to pay more than Vodafone in order to be associated with the Red Devils. Conspiracy theorists will note that Google recently established an office in Manchester.

Gazza has the same problem george had an addictive personality that means he can't stop drinking no matter how he tries.. that and having to cope with the fact that he has just lost a good friend of his and learning to cope with not being a top line footballer anymore is all too much for him at the moment.. just shows that even though times have moved on we still can't help these people any more than we could do in george's day

Saw an interview with gazza on Sky Sports news where he said he would still turn up and do his job.. although even during that interview he sounded like he had had a drink or too

gazzae 06-12-2005 11:23

Re: [Merged] The Football Thread 2005/2006 Season

I get the impression that Gazza is very child like. He had a lot of bad infulences in his life - five-bellies - and also people who have taken advantage of him - ripping him off etc.

I wonder if anything would have been different if he had gone to Utd and not to Spurs.

well Enlgnad have been seeded for the WC.

have to say that with all the worrying we have done and wanting to avoid another top team shows we can't win the WC.. i don't think Brasil 70 were worried that had the world champs in their group

the fact that there are teams we don't want to play and can't beat proves we won't win it.. still at least if we get knocked out then Sven should go.. off to Real Madrid apparently so looks like they will go another year without a trophy

Chrysalis 07-12-2005 11:08

Re: [Merged] The Football Thread 2005/2006 Season

No the issue is if unseeded you probably have to go up against that team and beat them twice to win it, not something you want to do. If brazil say they dont wanna draw germany in the group stage does that mean they cant win it?

you've got to say looking at the performance tonight and across the group plus the teams we played against and say we don't deserve to go through.. we worked the keeper twice.. once for the goal and then scholes had one other chance.. no one performed and couldn't even raise their game

saw ronaldo sitting on the bench and he didn't even care that we were out.. he still gets 100K this week so don't worry about it

Hmm, McClaren has got Boro playing some pretty negative tactics this season, and Blackburn are basically a bunch of cloggers under Hughs.

As for Big Sam, he's a good manager, but I don't think the new boss would be happy if he brought his Geriatricos policy to the Glazerdome ;)

can't say there are many top coaches around who have impressed me much.. Man U should play to a certain style with attacking football and not sure some of the managers on the continent would give us that.. only one who plays a team like that is Rikard at Barca but not sure if he could replicate that at Man U

worryingly the board think Sven is a great manager and have asked him about the job before.. i'd rather stick with Fergie

I can see the Glazers wanting a "top name" manager, and with Sven ruling out the Real MAdrid job (was he really asked about that too?) I can see being a touted for contender. :(

And he's had some experience in getting players in for no money so the Glazers can use him to help pay off some of the £700 mil.

OK very few of the players he has signed are any good but at least they won't be as bad as the 120k a week amnesiac.

Re: [Merged] The Football Thread 2005/2006 Season

Having watched the highlights on the beeb, it isn't like we aren't creating chances, we are. So I'm not as worried as some supporters are. We need to convert the chances obviously, but it's when you don't even ceate chances you should be worried. Arsenal suffered the same as we did over the weekend, Henry missed 2 guilt edged chances and would probably have cruised the match. On another day, Rooney would have bagged a hat trick, that's the nature of football. We had enough chances to have won 2 games (about a dozen shots on target) these things do happen in football. Gary Neville was at fault for the Everton goal, why he tracked kilbane when he was running towards other defenders is a mystery. In doing so he was left exposed, in the position where he was supposed to be covering. Ultimately, a simple pass was all that was needed to McFadden, who was in acres of space to pick his spot. The experts will say, a goalkeeper should not be beaten at his near post. But fair play to McFadden, it was pretty much unstoppable.

sherer 12-12-2005 11:09

Re: [Merged] The Football Thread 2005/2006 Season

i blame Van Der Sar for that goal,, i've not been impressed by any of his performances so far.. all the saves he's made are only ones most keepers would have made .. plus he's let in a few goals that he shouldn;t have.. never comes off his line when he shuold.. even though he can see all the play and does punches that go to no where

with him and park and Saha doing nothing the whole match it was no wonder we only drew.. would have liked to have seen Rossi brought on sooner..

we started the match a few players down and despite the chances still can't seem to put the ball in the back of the net.. bet Keano was watching that thinking he was right to go

for the past 2 years we can't score from a corner and looks like we don't even practice them in training.. for 30m Rio needs to put in alot more effort.. including getting his head stuck in when the boots are flying.. we need a proper winger.. doesn;t Ryan Giggs no the ball is a solid object and won't go through a defender if you kick it at them ? are best kicked or a dead ball and crosser of the ball is Neville .. doesn't anyone practice this in training ? i'm sure when we play Wigin we still won't have any wingers and still can't cross or score from a corner either

we might have signed De Jong from Ajax for Jan and Keano looks to be on his way to Read Madrid

Indeed he had. Then he looked mighty upset later when Bardsley was put on in his place.

Rooney should have had a hat trick, he missed an open goal, then Ruud wouldn't give him the ball for the pen.

nice to see us score from a corner.. still don't think they had practiced that at all. i wish Andy Gray wouldn't over analyse these things all the tne.. what happened was the ball was whacked into the ball by Giggs hoping someone would get on the end of it... no one had practiced that and no one was moving to create space like Andy Gray said

also at the weekend Andy gray was talking about the Liverpool goal v Boro.. during that goal Morientes was standing off side but the ball wasn't played to him.. it came off a Boro bloke and went to him and Andy was talking about how he was inactive etc.. surely the same thing happened with the Fletcher "goal" as it came back from the keeper he would have been on-side ?

you could see from the other corners that we still don't really have much of an idea

nice to see us getting a few goals but should have been so much more.. still no real wing play and we are very narrow.. also VDS still looks very poor.. they played a ball to the far post in the 80th min with Smith covering a defender and you could see from the replay he had no idea whether to come off his line or not

be interesting to see how well he does up there.. hope it all works out well for him.. he was a legend at United on and off the pitch and put in the effort of about 5 players put together

"There's only one Keano"

nice to see that he took a 50% paycut too. I know 45k is still a lot of money, but if the rumours about Real are true, he gave up about 30-40k a week to play for his boyhood idols

I'm quite sure the multi-millionaire can put up with a paycut. Interestingly he could have announced this when he left but only did when Real cooled their interest.

I don't think he would have gone to another premiership club to avoid playing against Man U.

All he needs to worry about now is if Man U and Celtic are picked in the same group for the Champions League next year.

From the Laws of the game...

Gaining an advantage by being in that position means playing a ball that rebounds to him off a post or the crossbar having been in an offside position or playing a ball that rebounds to him off an opponent having been in an offside position.

Though this leads me to believe that a ball which is deflected by a defender (not deliberately played) should be offside as well. I can't remember the Liverpool goal so not sure which case it was.

Re: [Merged] The Football Thread 2005/2006 Season

CHELSEA v Barcelona
Real Madrid v ARSENAL
Werder Bremen v Juventus
Bayern Munich v AC Milan
PSV Eindhoven v Lyon
Ajax v Inter Milan
Benfica v LIVERPOOL
RANGERS v Villarreal

(Ties to be played 21/22 February and 7/8 March)

Good possibilities for Rangers and Liverpool to progress there I reckon.

I was there at the time and wasn't sure if Morientes was offside. But looking at the replays he was offside when the original ball was played through, hence he was still offside despite the defender's touch (which doesn't matter, despite what people think).

Surely it matters if the touch is deliberate?

it's just so inconsistent though in one match it was ok in another it was off-side.. even the commentators don't know as Andy Gray said one was ok and the other was off-side

i wish they'd just stick toif you are off-side you are off-side

Looking at the draw, it could have been Utd V Liverpool if we had got through instead of Benfica!

Well if the defender had controlled in, then passed it to Morientes, of course he wouldn't be offside, but the header clearly wasn't a deliberate action.

Do you have an video of the incident? If he headed the ball rather than the ball hit him on the head then its sounds a deliberate action to me.

Not true, you can't play a team from your own country at this stage of the competition.

i was going to reply and say the same thing but liverpool don't have any country protection so they could have been drawn together

It is true. A country can only have 4 teams in the competition. When Liverpool were allowed to compete because of that law they didn't get country protection. How else do you think they ended up in the same group as Chelsea?
