Anyway United only put a bid in for rooney after newcastle did, before 'the money wasnt there' it seem united where willing to play the waiting game for rooney but have had their hand forced by the magpies

I'm not that young. I remember hearing (when I lived in the NW) of AF storming up to Blackpool one night and physically removing a young Giggs from a party.

Re: [Merged] - Football talk

I do hope that if utd sign Rooney, they don't drop Smith, as he's looking really good. Not just the goals, the build-up play as well.

For me, it's our midfield that's lacking. They should be going after someone to replace Keane, not another striker.

Oh, I absolutely hate David Bellion. I'd better not start on him, as I'd want to start swearing heavily and it'll just be loads of stars. F useless. :)

sherer 28-08-2004 17:01

Re: [Merged] - Football talk

it was a poor performance really and the late goal we got shouldn't disguise that. Giggs was poor and hasn't done anything for 2 years. We can't even do a decent corner.

Scholes isn't playing as well as he can either. Hopefully after watching that they realise how much we need Rooney.

Damien 28-08-2004 17:39

Re: [Merged] - Football talk

You dont Need rooney, you dont need anyone. You have a good team, sure they are not all big names (although most are!) the last thing united need to do is throw another £30 million pounds at a problem.

Alan Smith is showing his true skill and it is good for englands hopes as he is becoming one of englands best strikers and will deserve to replace owen if he keeps it up.

Ruud is also a excellent player and proberly the secound best striker in the premership and even after that you have Saha and your young players are good as well.

Arsenal have not got the best striker in the premership with reyes (although if he continues like this he will be up there!) but he has shown to be the ideal partner for henry and it is the same with all our team (excluding Henry and Vieira who are among the best). Fabregas and Reyes where not the most well known players when we got them but they are both pplaying really well. Wenger has ddone it again just like toure, pires, henry etc etc.

Basically our team isnt littered with big signings but well chosen young players the latest example being Fabregas who is one of the best young players (only 17, younger than rooney) and Reyes and arsenal fans are really happy with the team. United do not need to go out and sign a big name to fill a hole as usual they need to be happy with the team they have! Its good

I don't think the performance was poor at all, Blackburn had their backs against the wall for most of the 2nd half, it was just the finishing was a bit wayward, plus the keeper had a blinding match.

Goals: Blackburn 1 Man Utd 1
Shots on target ( Inc Goals ): Blackburn 2 Man Utd 9
Shots off Target (inc woodwork): Blackburn 4 Man Utd 9
Blocked Shots: Blackburn 2 Man Utd 6
Corners Won: Blackburn 4 Man Utd 14
Total Fouls Conceded: Blackburn 26 Man Utd 18
Offsides: Blackburn 3 Man Utd 4
Yellow Cards: Blackburn 2 Man Utd 1
Red Cards: Blackburn 1 Man Utd 0

if you compare our performance with that of Arsenal from midweek we are along way short of what they are doing at the moment. If we are challening for the league we should be winning these matches 3 or 4 nil instead we just get a draw with Blackburn and had a shakey 2-1 win against Norwich

This is what I don't understand re: Rooney. Surely if he wants to leave, he doesn't have to wait for the club to 'allow' him to leave? Or would his contract state the asking price would have to be met?

Would anyone know?

he is contracted to play football for Everton until I think the summer of 05. Therefore even if he doesn't want to play Everton have to be compensated for letting someone buy out that contract. If they don't get theprice they think he's worth he won't go. Although he could end up going on strike so Everton lower their demands.

Hmm interesting battle between Man U and Newcastle.

Although reading into it Rooneys preferred move is Newcastle.

Im guessing though the board at Newcastle must be desperate to save Sir Bobby as no amount of strikers world class or not is going to make up for their dismal defence.

Again bemused as to why Man U need another striker as Rooney is not renowned for scoring in the 94th minute :D

Still nice to see the Arsenal kept up the good ole fight today.

Getting a feeling for the fours now me thinks.

44 games unbeaten.

4 Premiership Wins.

4-1 today.

:D

We scraped a 2-1 win against Norwich at home and you thump them 4-1 away. Says alot really. You still in a different league at the moment. Have to wait for the European Cup to start to see if you can keep up the performance then, although we both got quite easy groups.

i think this was always on the cards when they said Robson would go at the end of the season.

What I can't understand is why when they already have a poor defence did they sell their best defender just before the transfer deadline with no one else lined up ?

I think Rooney won't go to Newcastle now as their is no manager to tell him how he will fit into the team etc

Kneebs 30-08-2004 12:52

Re: [Merged] - Football talk

I don't think he would've signed for them anyway - I think Man U would've just upped the newcastle offer, and beat newcastles wage offer.

And like you say, the strikeforce isn't where they need to be strenghening, its the defence, so I cant understand why they're after him

Where does everybody else see Rooney fitting in? I would imagine that Fergie would continue David Moyes good work and have Rooney playing between 20-30 games, not necessarily starting each one. This way, he stays fit, fresh and has time to fit into the team.

Especially as Fergie does not have to force things the way Alan Smith is playing (Mark Hughes re-incarnate!).

Speaking of David Moyes - he must be gutted. £25 million to spend and the transfer window closing!

Dunno what the fee is yet though.

Just heard 6 year contract for £20,000 ,000 plus other fees
another £7,000, 000 dependant on appearances

Perhaps not but it's his future United are also paying for. It's not just about Euro 2004, he's proven in the last 2 seasons he's a hot prospect. I won't be drawn on whether I think he's worth the fee but assuming he stays at United for the rest of his career which on average would last about another 15+ years, it's not such an unwise investment in principle.

that's really annoying for me as a Palace fan as well. When ew had money problems and owed some money to a few italian clubs they would rather we went bankrupt than wait for their money.

Now all the Italian clubs have no money they are making everyong wait for their money.

i was referring to the fact that Lazio still owe money of the stam deal. When it was the other way round and Palace owed money to 2 italian clubs and we had money troubles the Italian clubs were going to go to FIFA to make sure they got their money or forced us out of business. We had to sell all our players at cut price deals just to pay the debt. The other clubs we owed money to were ok and gave us time.

Several Italian clubs are in the same boat as Lazio with no money nad not able to pay what they owe. I say treat them the same as what they did to Palace. If they go out of business like Fiorentina did then tough, will help my other team Man U and the other British clubs do better in Europe as well.

Gotcha......

As Man Utd are a PLC, I would have thought that they would press hard for the money that is owed, normally a PLC does not mess about with customers who owe money, having said that, it is £12 million, which I doubt anyone can afford to lose.

just read that Rooney will be on 50,000 a week which is the same as Phil Neville. Does that mean they are saying Phil is as good as Rooney :dozey:

To all those who said we already had enough strikers just look at Real.. they had Raul, Ronaldo, Zidane and Morientes along with Portillo coming through from the youth system and Figo and Beckham who can score from midfield and they still signed Owen.

2 things are worryying me this morning.

1) I think too much pressue is being put onto Rooney. He may have had a great Euro 04 but he was never a regular starter for Everton. Now he is being talked about as the player that will win the league and European Cup for us.

2) I've never really been able to see what Erikkson does for England. he doesn't take the training sessions, he doesn't talk to the coaches who do afterwards. He basically only picks the team that is recommended in the Sun and seems to have no tactically knowledge whatsoever. Yet all the top players in England who work with decent managers at club level say he is vital and must stay.

well the England game was dire. I think it's about time we realised that having a keeper whose nickname is calamity isn't a good idea. I'd rather have Kirkland, Robinson or Green.

We still played the same football from start to finish and again Sven showed he doesn't have the tactical knowledge to change the play partway through a match. He has to go.

I agree, we need to bring back an english manager.

Disgraceful game... James, no comment. I think a 3-5-2 formation needs to be looked at. We've in abundance of center backs... unsure if Rio or Woodgate can play it tho... the should learn though.

Arsenal goalkeeper Stack, currently on a season-long loan at Millwall, was held over an alleged attack on a woman in Beckenham, Kent, in the early hours of Wednesday.

Another man was also arrested. The two men, both 22-years-old, were released on bail, pending further inquiries, until October 22nd.

Stack, who has yet to win a senior Ireland cap despite forcing his way into the fringes of Brian Kerr's squad, played throughout Arsenal's run to the Carling Cup semi-finals last season.
And there goes hoping that this season we could concentrate on football rather than the off the field activities!

What the **** is up with that ref? 3 players sent off in the first 30 minutes!!!! Why on earth did he send healy off for, putting his fist in the air to celebrate????

Oh yeah 2-0 to Northern ireland!

Well half time in cardiff, 2-1 to Northern Ireland.

Hughes and Savage sent off after 8 minutes, Healy sent off after scoring a goal of making some type of gesture.

What a rubbish ref, 3 yellow cards would have sorted it and we coould have had a good game.

gazzae 08-09-2004 22:00

Re: [Merged] - Football talk

OK, just seen the replay of Healys sending off. After scoring he kicked the corner flag, and then looked for his family in the crowd and stuck his fist in the air towards them. The ref then gave him a yellow for kicking the flag over, which is fair enough, he then gave him another yellow for putting his fist in the air to his family!!!!! WTF??

With regards to Hughes, yes it was a bad tackle and reaction, so maybe he did deserve to be sent off . As for savage, i can't see any reason for him to be shown a red card.

This ref should never be allowed to ref an international match again!!

Sounds an excellent game to me - Savage finally sent off - football fans everywhere will be cheering that one :)

In other news:
No Man United players on the pitch for England after Neville went off injured - count the East Londoners though (Cole, Terry, King, Lampard, Beckham, Defoe).

Vieira sent off for calling people names - excellent, he doesn't play against the Irish and should be fit and fresh for the Arsenal.

The ironic thing is, he usually does something and doesn't get sent off for it, this time he did nothing and got sent off!!!

can anyone tell me why Sven is raving over Defoe. Ok he scored but he is a striker standing in the box who got the ball turned and put it in the net. That is what strikers do, part from Heskey.

Owen and Smith would have done the same if they had the ball. Defoe didn't score a run like Owen's against Agentina in 98, it wasn't a 20 yard screamer like Chartlon or even a drop the shoulder and run at the defenders like Cruyff.

he didn't really do much other work in the matchand never really had a created for himself or others any other chances.

Sven just doesn't seem to have a clue but he has now become one of his favourites and will surely start all the matches until we get Rooney back.

the rest of the performance was poor and the defence was rubbish.. we saw the danger in the first half, not sure if Sven did, and at half time our 4 million a year manager is meant to watch this and correct it for the second half or even shout out to the players on the pitch and tell them what to do.

Charrager was poor and just done backwards passes all night and never penetrated, Hargreaves isn't good enough for this level either

Bit of a sweeping statement

Lets get this straight - Defoe didnt play well (despite scoring one and having another good chance) because he did not play like Cruyff or Charlton!

And Hargreaves cannot play at this level but can play a pivotal role for a top CL side in Bayern Munich. Why was Hargreaves not good enough in the 2 minutes he played - what exactly are you basing that statement on?

Two away games, 4 points and both these sides due to come to England (would have been six but for one individual error which happens in any sport).

Why can't English fans be happy, we have played well, Sven makes changes which come off and still people continue to slate him. Do we have to be brainwashed by the media into what we think regarding the England team??

Two games, four points and what should be comfortable qualification to follow. :tu:

the whole team played average it's just that Defoe happend to be the striker in the box that got on the end of a pass. That is his job. He didn't do anything outstanding and never bossed the game or did a Zidane like run. To hear Sven talk about him you would think he was the next Zidane, Cruyff etc. That was the point i was trying to make.

Yes we got a win but the performance wasn't there and the "manager" still didn't seem to do much IMO.

BBKing 10-09-2004 00:33

Re: [Merged] - Football talk

Um - Defoe is a pretty good striker who's started the season as the best English striker around - Eriksson has (finally) picked the man in form and it worked - next step pick the men in form in the midfield (clue - one D. Beckham isn't amongst them - Shaun Wright-Phillips is).

Owen should be rested until he settles in in Spain - Rooney/Defoe, despite being a godawful Man Utd/Spurs combo, are the best partnership around. Gerrard for captain, Lampard, SWP and Bridge for the rest of the midfield.

I'll take 2-1 away against the second best team in the group anytime, and I'm not even a great fan of Sven - too timid and in awe of the big names, but he tried being brave and it worked - here's to a continuation of it.

nffc 10-09-2004 00:48

Re: [Merged] - Football talk

Talking of strikers- if we get John we will have John, David Johnson, Marlon King and Gareth Taylor- all capable of 20 goals a season in the Championship. And we're linked with Sam Parkin from Swindon according to Swindon local rag...

Shame our midfield is garbage isn't it.

agree about beckham his last good game for England was when we beat Greece to qualify for the WC.

Eriksson isn't strong enough to drop Beckham.. he should at least take the armband off him until he performs better.. was surprised when he dropped James

Ahem cough, welcome to Planet Earth - he's been rubbish for the last few games, no goals, no leadership, crap penalties. Pretty much since he's been at Madrid. He's undroppable though, sadly. Gerrard would make an excellent captain on current form, he's used to holding a team of underperforming individuals together.

That's liability pronounced 'defensive kingpin of the best side in the country whom Ferguson would give his right arm for', just to clear it up. King can go back to Spurs and we'll have the top two centre halves in Britain, Terry and big Sol.

Arsenal 1-0 PSV
PSG 0 - Chelsea 3

Arsenal scrape a 1-0, just like the old days. Two years ago it would have been a 1-1 or 1-2. Chelsea look good though, even though PSG are nothing much. Drogba is a goal machine in Europe.

We're carp.

Gerrard is a good keeper, probably one of the best in the division.

Our defence- Louis-Jean is out, Robertson who played today is utter carp as is Rogers, Dawson is out for 2-3 weeks more, Thompson's out for longer, Morgan's OK, Hjelde went off early today with what looked like a hamstring, Impey least said soonest mended, Doig's dodgy, Perch is 18- who have I missed?

Midfield- Evans is a little terrier and excellent, Reidy's good but a mardy git, Commons will be pooping it, James is injured, Jess is cack, rest is just raw kids

Strikers- well Taylor's back and he's good, Jonno's been a bit unlucky, King's utter carp and that's all we have.

Third from bottom, no wins in 8 now, three defeats including an utter urine extraction tonight (2-0 down after 11, they just jossed for the 79). Our defence can't keep them out, our attack isn't scoring and our midfield is neither tackling nor creating. We have a good keeper and that's about all the positives. You're going to muller us.

terry is a decent half back...but centre half? no way
every england game campbell plays in he either gives away a free kick that leads to a goal, gets caught out too easily and that leads to a goal or comes up for every corner and wastes a header wide of goal that any one of the other strikers would score with there eyes shut.
ooooohhh aint it great footy season is upon us again so we can get some decent banter going

So he's sometimes a liability because he doesn't score goals? 'Other strikers'? He's a centre-back. Centre. Back. He plays at the back. In the centre. His job isn't scoring goals. Mind you, he's scored one goal that was allowed and two that were disallowed, not through his fault. Gary Neville has scored 0 goals in more appearances, but you wouldn't say he was a liability (I would though). He committed ONE foul at Euro 2004 in four games. The goals England let in were given away by people like Heskey and Gerrard in the first match, Beckham/Cole in the third...

He was in FIFA's team of World Cup 2002. He's played in five consecutive international tournaments. He was in the All-Stars team of Euro 2004, where he was one of the four England players who were actually any good (the others being Lampard, Rooney and Cole).

Arsenal's form is notably worse without him and Vieira in the team (well, not this season). It's something ridiculous like two years since we lost a league game with both of them playing.

Terry is a decent football player as well as a good defender, notably scoring more goals than most centre backs and getting a good few assists (e.g. Beckham's goal v. Ukraine and Lampard v. Portugal).

Rio's ban ends soon, and I was checking the news sites today and found this..

Quote:

NAC Breda won't appeal a ban on Hungarian midfielder Tamas Peto by the Dutch Soccer Association as punishment for alleged doping, the team said Wednesday.

Peto tested positive for the steroid norandrosterone after a league match between Breda and PSV Eindhoven on Feb. 4. The ban began Wednesday.

Now Rio got 8 months for failing to take a drugs test, this guy actually failed his test, so you'd assume he'd get a similar ban? No? He got a 10 match ban!!!!!!!

you are forgetting 2 things he isn't English and doesn't play for Man U... just look at the players in Italy who got 4 months for failing a test..

If Sven wasn't so weak he could have told the FA he wanted him for Euro 04 and then he would have got a shorter ban
