Pfft!! if VM think we are getting entertainment from the situation, they'll use it as an excuse for another price rise...

Virgin Media bid to buy BSKYB. But cannot agree on what channels to lose

Try telling that to True movies and various shops.

Looks like Colors HD is coming to VM.

The owners have received an Ofcom licence to broadcast in HD on cable & satellite.

It's not yet known if this will replace or compliment the existing SD service.

Wasn't this a standalone channel before moving into M+ (or the new equivalent)?

This is a Hindi channel and would only be the third Asian channel to broadcast in HD, after the launches of &TV HD and Star Plus HD (don't know if VM have these, or if they're satellite only).

BBC News: Russia Today bank accounts 'frozen in UK'

NatWest bank has frozen the accounts of state-run broadcaster Russia Today (RT), its editor-in-chief says.

Virgin Media do broadcast RT on Virgin Media Ireland.

That mean nothing. They need an licence to broadcast anywhere.

I created a thread earlier about RT without realising that there was already a thread in 'Current Affairs':

Re: Colors HD, i'm not sure what you mean by "they need a licence to broadcast anywhere"

It just mean it can launch or Sky, Freesat and Virgin Media - or even outside the UK.

If Colors is launching an HD Channel (As first reported by Bizasia) it don't mean it set to launch on Virgin Media UK any time soon.

Viacom18 has still to be given to licence for Rishtey Cineplex to launch on Freeview (We look it up on the Ofcom web site early on today).

I see what you mean now.

I've since found out that Ofcom no longer require different licenses for SD & HD channels, so it's possible that the SD variant may continue alongside any HD emission and agree that there is no guarantee that this will come to VM (not that I imagine many will be too bothered!)

Re: RT. As things stand, I think that there's more chance that RT will be removed from VM Ireland than be added to the UK service!!

South Asian channels all seem to be in a 4:3 aspect ratio, so I'm not too sure how much of am improvement HD would be. Like Rishtey Cineplex, Colors belongs to Viacom 18, so probably as much chance of Colors HD arriving on VM as Rishtey Cineplex.

Re: RT on VM Ireland.

This article (courtesy of Damian) says that RBS/NatWest have denied closing or freezing the RT bank accounts:

http://www.scotsman.com/news/politic...unts-1-4260808

Apparently, a redacted letter to a supplier of RT was used to spread this false rumour by RT. Did they really think that they would get away with this?

I don't think that, even if it were to be true, that we need any lessons from Russia about free speech.

If this is the level of 'journalism' that they are stooping to, they should be stopped from broadcasting to the UK and Ireland anyway.

..... I watch Russia Today on Freeview and I have to disagree with revoking their licence.

Even if a viewer did not know that RT was a Putin propaganda machine, they would know after a few minutes of viewing.

With the problems that exist with Russia, I think its useful to get their "take" on things, however warped they maybe. I think its important to see what the Russian people are watching everyday on their screens and what Putin is telling them and hiding from them.

So no, I don't think it should be banned but what should be banned is some of our fellow "countrymen" who appear on the channel regularly. As they clearly love Putin so much, we should invite them to live there with him and never come back here...

I wonder if it is actually the case that RT shows a mirror of Russian domestic output?

Perhaps it's tailored to the oversees audience (unless it's a simulcast of a channel that also broadcasts to Russia?)

The trouble is, its never going to give the Russian "take" on things. It isn't there to inform anyone about what Russia is doing. More to undermine and spread misinformation about the west. A mix of propaganda and divide and rule tactics.

Definitely tailored to the non-Russian audience.
