Don't have time to post the reference, but I got it just now from the Torygraph. Sorry.

On a Friday when parliament is closed what a weak nob this man is

Sir Keir Starmer has been forced into a dramatic U-turn over his Chagos Islands bill following furious backlash from Donald Trump.

The legislation, to hand sovereignty of the islands to Mauritius, was set to be debated in the House of Lords on Monday, but it was delayed on Friday after the Conservatives warned that the deal could violate a 1966 treaty with the US. The Tories tabled a motion in the House of Lords on Friday morning to delay any ratification of the treaty, so they could conclude discussions and avoid breaching international law.

It follows warnings the deal would breach a 1966 UK-US treaty guaranteeing British sovereignty over the islands

So when Truss and Cleverly started the ball rolling on the agreement to hand over Chagos in 2022, they must of course have realised that treaty existed?

Or were they equally incompetent?

Not sure giving up sovereignty was planned at that point.

the UK and Mauritius have decided to begin negotiations on the exercise of sovereignty over the British Indian Ocean Territory (BIOT)/Chagos archipelago.
...
We will seek to strengthen significantly our co-operation on Indian ocean security, maritime security and marine protection, conservation of the environment, climate change and respect for human rights, and on tackling illegal migration, illegal fishing, drugs and arms trafficking, as well as bilateral co-operation on a range of other issues.
If sovereignty was being given up, no point in discussing those other matters.

On 3 October 2024, the UK and Mauritius issued a joint statement, affirming Mauritius' sovereignty over the Chagos Archipelago while granting the UK continued control over Diego Garcia for 99 years. This agreement implicitly indicates that the UK will maintain sovereignty over Diego Garcia, which hosts a critical military base. Additionally, provisions for Chagossians, regional security, and environmental cooperation are included, strengthening bilateral ties between the two nations.[63][64]
In his October 2024 statement on the Chagos Islands, Foreign Secretary David Lammy discussed the contested status of the territory and the UK-US military base.

They all knew about the treaty but the US had previously indicated they would be happy to revise the treaty.

U.S. Support for UK and Mauritius Agreement on Chagos Archipelago

PRESS STATEMENT

MARCO RUBIO, SECRETARY OF STATE

MAY 22, 2025

Today, the United States welcomed the historic agreement between the United Kingdom and the Republic of Mauritius on the future of the British Indian Ocean Territory—specifically, the Chagos Archipelago.

We commend both the United Kingdom and Mauritius for their leadership, vision, and commitment to ensure that Diego Garcia remains fully operational for the duration of this agreement. We look forward to working closely with both governments to strengthen our collaboration in support of regional peace and stability.

Following a comprehensive interagency review, the Trump Administration determined that this agreement secures the long-term, stable, and effective operation of the joint U.S.-UK military facility at Diego Garcia. This is a critical asset for regional and global security. President Trump expressed his support for this monumental achievement during his meeting with Prime Minister Starmer at the White House.

Andy Burnham blocked from standing in election- news just breaking

The Labour Party has blocked Andy Burnham from standing in the upcoming Gorton and Denton by-election, a bombshell move that is set to spark the most furious civil war within the party since the general election.

The news broke after the party's National Executive Committee convened this morning for a make-or-break meeting to decide Mr Burnham's fate.

More of Labour's version of democracy in action

If Burnham had the courage of his convictions, then he would've first resigned as Mayor. Then the reasons for not allowing him would've not been there.
Unfair on the other parties to have been forced into an unnecessary election as a result.

I wouldn't worry too much if I was Burnham; I'm sure Starmer will add this to his list of U-turns in due course. ;)

No doubt. What’s your point?

Both of the main parties have been failing us all.
