Hurricane honoured in HRI awards

Quote:

Hurricane Fly made more history as he was awarded the prestigious title of Racehorse of the Year at the 11th annual Horse Racing Ireland awards at a glittering ceremony at Leopardstown racecourse.

The Willie Mullins-trained nine-year-old became the first horse to win the award twice. Last month, the son of Montjeu galloped to a world record of 17 Grade One wins with victory in the Morgiana Hurdle at Punchestown on a day that saw Ruby Walsh ride a five-timer and Mullins saddle seven winners at two meetings.

Star pair head International list.

Quote:

Nigel Twiston-Davies' The New One and defending champion Zarkandar are the star names among a seven-strong entry for the re-opened International Hurdle at Cheltenham on Saturday.

Just half a length separated the pair when Zarkandar got the upper-hand in the Aintree Hurdle last April, but Neptune winner The New One looked to have made further progress when hammering Rock On Ruby in a Listed event at Kempton in October

McCoy praise for retired Binocular.

Champion jockey Tony McCoy paid handsome tribute to Binocular after the former Champion Hurdle winner was retired following the discovery of an underlying heart problem.

McCoy labelled the Nicky Henderson-trained, JP McManus-owned nine-year-old as the quickest jumper of a hurdle he has ever ridden in his illustrious career.

Johnson excited by Captain's return

http://www.attheraces.info/article.a...return&day=Wed

Quote:

Richard Johnson believes Captain Chris has "everything in his favour" as he makes his seasonal return in the Betfred Peterborough Chase on Thursday.

The Philip Hobbs-trained nine-year-old enjoyed an excellent campaign last time around, once again showing his preference for right-handed tracks with good runs at Ascot sandwiching his excellent effort to finish a neck second to Long Run in the King George VI Chase at Kempton.

Return to Oz is Simenon's goal.

http://www.attheraces.info/article.a...s+goal&day=Wed

Quote:

Simenon will have the world's top two staying races on his agenda once again during 2014 after bringing an exhausting year to a close in Hong Kong.

This time 12 months ago Simenon was turning in disappointing efforts over hurdles, but once trainer Willie Mullins freshened him up and returned him to the Flat, he was a revelation.

Butler appeals five-year ban

http://www.attheraces.info/article.a...e&sub=&day=Thu

Quote:

Gerard Butler has lodged an appeal against the five-year ban imposed by the British Horseracing Authority over the use of banned steroids on some of his horses.

The results of a BHA inquiry held in November were released last Wednesday, with Group One-winning trainer Butler having admitted all seven charges against him relating to samples of an anabolic steroid found in horses in his care.

Quote:

Tony McCoy is praying for rain at Ascot in the hope that At Fishers Cross can attempt to get his season back on track in the Wessex Youth Trust Long Walk Hurdle on Saturday week.

The Rebecca Curtis-trained six-year-old was unbeaten in six starts last season, signing off as the leading staying novice hurdler with victories at the Cheltenham Festival and at Aintree's Grand National meeting.

Whisky out for early redemption.

http://www.attheraces.info/article.a...=&sub=&day=Thu

Quote:

Owner Dai Walters is hopeful the star of his string Oscar Whisky will get off the mark over fences at the second attempt at Cheltenham on Friday.

The top-class hurdler was an odds-on favourite for his chasing debut at Prestbury Park last month, but in a race run at a crawl, the eight-year-old was beaten a neck by the talented Taquin Du Seuil.

Theatre puts on Peterborough show

http://www.attheraces.info/article.a...e&sub=&day=Thu

Quote:

One of jumping's fallen stars rose from the ashes at Huntingdon as Nicky Henderson's Riverside Theatre staged an incredible comeback in the Betfred Peterborough Chase.

The 2014 renewal of the track's feature event will be held on a Sunday in a bid to renew popularity and again attract names of the calibre of Best Mate, One Man and Edredon Bleu to Cambridgeshire, but as a sheer visual spectacle this year's finish will be tough to top.

Quote:

Nigel Twiston-Davies believes The New One is not yet at his physical peak as he puts his huge reputation on the line in the StanJames.com International Hurdle at Cheltenham on Saturday.

The five-year-old was a brilliant winner of the Neptune Investment Management Novices' Hurdle at the Cheltenham Festival in the spring and signed off his campaign when narrowly beaten by Zarkandar in the Aintree Hurdle.

Monbeg stakes National claims

Quote:

Monbeg Dude has his illustrious connections contemplating a Crabbie's Grand National attempt after his return to form in the Majordomo Hospitality Handicap Chase at Cheltenham.

Michael Scudamore's stayer, who captured last year's Welsh National, was caught close home on his reappearance at the Open meeting but was ridden with more restraint by the trainer's brother, Tom, and collared the strong-travelling 7-2 favourite Theatre Guide to score by a length and a quarter.
